Yeah, as Steve said, looks interesting though there's zero chance I'll be able to go to it...

Interesting also that "Modern Jive" gets zero mentions on their web site, and Ceroc only gets a mention in the rotating marquee of "dance words" at the top of the page.

I think its fair to say that a lot of folks in the pro dance world dont speak too favourably about MJ. Its ashame but I guess the sheer success of it is something to be jealous of perhaps?

I would definately be up for a trip to the event though. I did post this on another thread but it was started by that FeelingPink person. Im two timing her. "Shhh" dont say a word.

Looks like a fabulous event! Except, I'll be in the land of OZ at the time, well, part of it still in the air.

As for MJ in it (or not), I don't think it has to do with jealousy. MJ advertises itself across the board as a social dance, nothing of professionalism is ever being mentioned because it'd destroy the very argument that is being kept up in favour of the style and as an explanation of its success: it is a SOCIAL dance. Due to the lack of uniformity even within the 'body' of it there is also no chance that it will ever make it to the reputation of Ballroom etc.. BTW, I'd say the same applies to Salsa but Salsa has the added advantage of being popular around the globe, being an original (?) dance, and last but not least, shares the arrogance of the other styles.

I do love MJ but I too would not really put it in the same event as these more classical dance styles. It just doesn't fit in, the same way that you won't find Hustle listed.

Having said all that, how did Hip Hop find its way in there? :D

Salsa gets a fair representation though – there are two Salsa classes during the weekend. Isn't Salsa just a social dance?

If MJ has had so much "sheer success", you'd expect it to have a similar presence...

It might have something to do with the fact that Ceroc isn't an exhibitor at the event.

most exhibintions of this nature aren't going to to promote you if you aren't an exhibitor

I agree with tha one. However, possibly the following class is actually not Latin American Jive but MJ:

Sunday - 14.30 –15.15 Jive Taster Session.
Learn to rock around the clock with expert tutor.

-----

Three classes on Saturday would really interest me, a shame that I can't be there.

10.30 –11.15 Kathak Dance Taster Session.
An introduction to the traditional Indian art of Kathak - which uses intricate rhythm and beautiful subtle movement to tell stories - from one of the UK and India's leading practitioners. Suitable for complete beginners.

15.30 – 16.15 Musicality Masterclass.
The Royal Academy of Dance presents a musicality master class led by Phyllida Crowley-Smith, trained dancer, teacher and choreographer who's achievements include work on Grease, Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Fame. Focussing on performance aspects of dance, response to phrasing, atmosphere and dynamics, this class will appeal to teachers and experienced students alike.

17.30 – 18.15 Bollywood Taster Session.
Learn a spectacular Bollywood dance routine for beginners. Bollywood dance is an exotic fusion of dance styles such as Indian classical, Street, Salsa, Jazz, & Bellydancing so why not learn the basics of all in just one lesson! From the experts at Bollywood & Bhangra Beats.

Maybe they shouldn't be using the trademark in their rotating marquee on their web site then... :whistle:They should not be using anybody's trademark without consent. If it is the case that they are then there is a business opportunity there. A stand is £570 for 3 sq metres (sic) (I hope they mean 3 metres square.) Ceroc should be represented there, both from the organisers point of view and that of Ceroc. With the size of the potential audience that the misuse of the Ceroc trademark could bring in Ceroc should have a lot of leverage to get some quid-quo-pro.
These exhibitions are very expensive to run. The stand price is a small art of it. The rewards can be anything from enormous to virtually zero. Even 3 sq metres is enough to have a television showing Champs videos (copyright permitting) and someone handing out leaflets and answering questions.

Sorry hun, don't get too excited

I've just got back and here's my report.

I got there at 10am, (cos I wanted to go to the photography seminar at 10-30am) to be faced with an enormously long queue (filled with 1000's of girls, all aged between 10 and 18, looking like pretty clones, I might add:na: ), all of which seemed to have tickets already, so I joined the end.

Then after about 30mins of moving very slowly and getting nowhere near, I noticed 'some people' going straight up the front  so I went to investigate.

Well, apparently, although you may have a ticket, you still have to queue separately to book for one of the seminars or workshops and 'this' is what they were all queuing for.

You can bypass the queue if you just want to get in but no one tells you this!!!!!!

Now, by this time, my seminar already started,:tears: so i'd never have made it in time, if I had to get back in the queue, so I just went in.... LUCKILY FOR ME, the seminar has nearly empty and they didn't even ask for a ticket (i'd have been really mad if I queued then missed it!) This was quite good in the end.

But the exhibition it's self is very small and it was heaving. They had taster classes going on in 3 penned off areas, which were packed but you could watch from outside the pens.

The theatre area was chocka too, I'd say you have to get there at least 20mins before a performance to be able to see anything at all. And IMO the performances I saw were very average.:(

For those of you who love shoes, you'll be OK  but you can only look, there's none for sale!:(

They have stands for clothing, DVD's and dance schools but not much else really.

If your planning to make a whole day of it, I think you'll be disappointed!:(

But, If your a red blooded teenage male, you'll be in totty heaven!
The girls seemd to out number the boys by at least 100-1:what:

There's the Hand and Flower over the road from Olympia near to O station..

Rhythm King

Well, Lory's said pretty much everything, although there were some shoes for sale. The highlight for me was a free consultation with a specialist dance physio, who has spotted something which appears to be the root cause of my knee and hip problems, and related to an old back injury. My normal physio and osteopath haven't picked up on it before, but I shall be off to see them soon!

Anyway, I get the feeling the organisers have underestimated the interest in the show. There were indeed organised busloads of girls arriving from dance schools and clubs, who descended on the place like a horde of locusts, grabbing all the places for ticketed events. There was so much attitude, you could smell the pheromones!

Lee Rays, who taught the Ceroc classes said his class had 3 boys in it, the rest were young girls. The funny thing was, they were all paying minute attention to him and picking everything up really quickly. At one point he was explaining part of the catapult, and had his left hand up in front, just gesturing as he talked, and he noticed they were all copying him! He had finished the 4 move routine and gone through it twice, in 27 minutes and was left having to think on his feet to fill the remaining quarter of an hour. Never happens like that at a venue - does it?

I don't know what the weekend will be like in comparison, I'd be interested to hear. They are already planning next year's show. Hopefully they'll adapt and improve accordingly.

Oh and one last gem - I learned a new "word" at one of the stands - Interiority. Well, I suppose you have to make these things up so your product has some differences from the people in the next stand

Thanks to Lory and RK for reporting back. I'm off to this today and I'm glad I now know what to expect. I was going to pack my dancing shoes but I don't think I'll bother - sounds like the best idea is to have a mooch aroud (where that's possible), try to attend the interesting seminars and then head off for a nice lunch with the girls! :na:

I took my 12 year old daughter and her friend and they loved it. They managed to do the Nike workshop, Pineapple workshop and some Campera strange kind of dancing. If you wanted to do any of the classes you just had to sit in queues for about an hour.

I spent most of my time wandering round the stalls and watching dance exhibitions on the main stage.

Spotted a few forumites too! Asif, Tigg Tours, and Mikeyr.

I watched the 'Get together' exhibition with Simon Selmon and crew showing Lindy type dancing. This was followed by 2 lovely to watch salsa dancers called Lee and Shelley. They had some great 'i want to steal moves'. I know there was Ballroom after but i had to watch the kids do 'Break dancing.

The best part of the day for me was the Breakin' convention preview. There were these amazing dancers called 'Flawless'. Wow! the timing! the moves! the acrobats! :worthy: I loved them so much that we have booked to see them again at Sadlers Wells next week at breakin' convention 06. Just wish i was 20 years younger.

:yeah: :yeah: :yeah: :yeah: :yeah:

Standing up on the temporary stands, you couldn't help wondering if they were designed to take the number of people crammed onto it, or hanging off it, to get the smallest glimpse of these guys, but they were just so good that it was worth putting your life at risk to try!

Glad to say that the other problems that Lory & RK encountered on the Friday seemed to have been sorted out too. I arrived at 11, and we went straight in, no queuing at all. Teenage girls (of the young end of the scale) did outnumber everyone else by 100-1 still and there was nowhere near enough space in the taster class areas. I did find the stands a little disappointing, mainly directed at the younger audience looking at going into dancing for a profession, I thought they could have done with a bit more directed at adults dancing purely for fun, but then, that's what I was there for, so obviously that's what I'd want.

I did talk to one of the exhibitors, and they said that, being the first year, they were keen to get feedback for future events, and that the lack of space on classes, or information on needing tickets for them, was a common complaint, so that should be improved next year.

Went on Saturday. The place was heaving with "Jail Bait" - it was difficult at times working out where you could/could not look  Did the Argentine Tango taster class (teachers pet  ) and watched the fun bollywood class. Saw a great looking flamenco taster class at the end of the day but it didn't have the same impact watching all the students in their jeans/t-shirts (apart from one girl who must have dressed up specially just for that!).

The hip-hop/breakdancing was the best bit of the whole day - worth the ticket price alone. There was a girl group doing their bit in the first part of the breaking convention preview - again, lots of jail bait although there were some VERY fit older girls there. Some of them could have done with this (http://www.shockabsorber.co.uk/bounceometer/shock.html) but i wasn't complaining! The second lot, called "Flawless" were absolutely jaw-dropping!! I've seen some really good hip-hop shows before but these guys knocked spots off them.

Reflecting back, as RK said, I think the organisers completely underestimated the interest in this event.

It could have been so much better.

The seminars and workshops could have been pre-booked over the internet and like easyjet, you could simply print off your own ticket.

The shoe and clothing stalls could have made some serious money, if they were properly prepared and stocked. I'm sure lot's of people like myself went along with the idea of buying some shoes, if they were at a discounted event price.:na:

The stands needed to be spaced out more.

And if only I could think of an idea, that would appeal to trendy young teenage girls, that they could buy there and then, priced between £5 and £10, I think I'd risk taking a stall myself next year!

and lastly, for the life of me, I can't understand why there aren't more young men interested in dancing/partner dancing?

Well I was only commenting the other evening on the Strictly Dance Fever 2 and how it may well have a detrimental affect on encouraging more young men to start dancing.

IMHO nearly all the me I saw getting into the finals (I admit I only saw the first few before the ended up in the house) appeared to be overtly camp or gay.

Now there is nothing wrong with being camp or gay but it isn't strictly the best advert to entice young butch hetrosexual males into dancing is it when the show appears to show a preference towards this style of dancer ???

they are not going to be what the average Jo Public male will look for as a role model now will they???

I fear that this series will somewhat stifle the renewed interest from the men whilst the women will continue taking up dancing unabated.

This sounds like next year it will be a really good event! Glad I didn't bother this time, as I was far too exhausted on Saturday to contemplating fighting my way through crowds of people just to watch some mediocre dancing, but if the organisers take on the feedback and make improvements, I will definitely go along next time.

Those of you that went to this MIGHT just remember the hip-hop dance crew called "Flawless". They were, in a word, AWESOME. Worth the ticket price just to see their act alone!!

Well, i was chatting with a neighbour the other day and he runs a promotions company called "G Force Productions (http://www.gforceproductions.com)". He told me that he is one of their promoters. He also told me about the UK Street Dance Championships happening on July 30th at the Barbican in London. Flawless are not going to be there as they are going to be touring in the States but there are going to be dozens of other dance troupes, just as good, competing. As he put it, "it is to street Dancing as the World Cup is to football."

If they are anything as good as what we saw at the Dance Exhibition, i am definately going. Anyone else fancy going too?
