I used to play this on email with TiggsTours ages ago. Not sure if this is going to work as a multi-player game but here goes ....

a) Save the attached spreadsheet onto your PC and fill in the page that says "My Grid". You've got five ships in total (1x5 squares, 1x4 squares, 2x3 squares and 1x1 square). None of the ships are allowed to touch each other (must be at least one blank square between them). Ships can only go horizontally or vertically. See example.

b) Also on your spreadsheet are other pages saying "A's and B's Grid", "C's and D's Grid", etc. You will use these grids to keep a record of where the other players ships are or are not, when the game starts. There are enough grids for 11 players but you can add more.

c) Then reply to this thread to say that you are playing this game. I will keep a list of those that are playing.

d) When we get enough people who want to play, i'll list the names and then the game can start. I'll start off by selecting one of the other players and where i think one of their ships is. For example, "TiggsTours - B2".

e) The next turn goes to the person who i have just selected (in this case TiggsTours). She has to reply to say if i've had a HIT, MISS or HIT AND SINK (when the hit has actually sunk her ship aswell. It would then be her turn and she can select anyone else in the game. So, she might say,

Wittybird - C4

f) It is then Wittybirds to take a turn, and so on, until there is only one person left with any ships.

g) If a player takes longer than 1 hour to reply, then another player can take over their turn, if they want. For example, if Wittybird did not reply, then DavidJames might decide to take TiggsTours C4 shot onto his grid (obviously only if it misses his ships). He can then make a selection, etc.

Different tactics can be used and it will be interesting to see how people play this. I hope this works.

I think it would be more fun if you could say like:

I think it would be more fun if you could say like:

I did think about players making multiple shot selections but i think it would get too confusing trying to keep track once we get right into the game (better to start simple). Also, i know some of you only have Internet access from work (Tigg) so this also keeps it fair for them.

Remember, when you take a shot at a player, all the other players will also record this on their grids aswell.

I'll count you out of this game then, maybe the next one (if there is one!!).

I love Battleships, but have a busy week at work this week and this method will take forever and a day to finish a game :what:

Suggested amendment to rules for next game: The first "shot" of any player applies to all players. If they get a hit, they get another go on that grid only, until they get a miss (or if more than one hit, then on those two people's grids only, etc.) Then play goes to the next person.

E.g.

Asif: ALL: A6

Result: WB-miss, gembar-miss, SWS-miss, Jenni-HIT, Donna-miss, ducasi-HIT and sunk

Asif: Jenni: A5, ducasi F7 (or could be the same square for both, if applicable)

Result: Jenni-HIT, ducasi-miss

Asif: Jenni A4

Result: Jenni-miss

Play then passes to the next player.

Just think it will be a faster and more interesting game that way (and you could count me in for the next one :D)

The other advantage of that method is that you can "catch up" easier rather than waiting around for people :)

Mind you, it could depend on how bored the person is and whether they're willing to reveal one of their ships in order to speed up the game...

Well, no - say you called "H7" and everyone except one person comes back quite quickly to say it is a miss. That one person takes a while to come back and it's a hit - so you can take another shot at them "on the side" until you get a miss. In the meantime, play can go on with the next person "shooting" - and it's all recorded on here, so people can scroll back to see what they should have 'taken' and catch up with hits on an individual level.

The only thing is you have to be fairly scrupulous about playing more or less in turns rather than people chipping in as a free-for-all. That could cause delays, but I still think, on the whole, that the game would go faster.
