There is also only one word for thesaurus.

The glory of the English language is that there is only one word for most things.

Can you think of two words that mean exactly the same??

With reference to size, mood, hidden meanings, nuance, etc...

OK, Franck and SexGod are close, but anything else?!?

ducasi
17th-January-2006, 03:23 PM
The glory of the English language is that there is only one word for most things. I'd disagree. There is quite often two or more words that mean the same thing. This is typically because English has acquired the words from other languages, and the multi-racial nature of the UK has mixed this all around nicely...

But because we have multiple words that mean the same thing, we can endow them with the "size, mood, hidden meanings, nuance, etc..." colourings which indeed makes our language the glory it is.

As you ask though, here are two words which mean exactly the same thing, but tell a wonderful thing about the evolution of languages...

"inflammable" and "flammable". :D

Am glad you disagree: I wouldn't expect anything less!!

Any examples of 2 words that mean exactly the same thing?!?

Indeed, thank you for your second paragraph, it seems to round off my point very well.:flower:

I remain unconvinced of the flammable/inflammable example. In modern, lazy English, they may be percieved as the same. However, inflammable alludes to an intensity that flammable just doesn't own.:D

Did you ever wonder what the WD in WD-40 stands for? The name was lifted right out ofchemist Norm Larsen's laboratory notebook. Way back in 1953, he was trying to concoct an anti-corrosion formula, which worked on the basic principle of displacing water. On his 40th try, Larsen finally got it right. Hence the name WD-40. It literally means Water Displacer, 40th try.

Who calibrates toasters? Mine goes from 1 to 6 but every piece of bread needs at least setting 5 plus defrost to get a decent toastieness. Seriously thinking of over-clocking it.

I wonder why it's usually men who are colour blindHere's the science bit - concentrate:

The reason is because the gene which controls whether you do or don't have red-green colourblindness (the most common type) happens to be located on the X chromosome, which men only have one of but women two. Therefore, if the gene is damaged in a man, it is his only copy and therefore he doesn't have proper colour vision, but both genes have to be damaged in a woman for her to have the same condition.

Not very random I know, but you asked.

Can you explain in words of less than 2 syllables please :flower::blush: sorry, I did my best - I'm not very good at this explaining science to non-scientists bit yet. But can you take my word for it that the reason is genetic, not coincidence, and that I'll explain it to you with pen and paper when I see you next if you really want me to?

And no, you're not a big thickie - most biology students have trouble with genetics :flower:

Jon Bon Jovi has just gone way down in my estimation (although he was pretty hot looking in Ally McBeal) what's with the lyrics:

"I want to be just as close as
The Holy Ghost is
and lay you down
On a bed of roses"?

The mind boggles

Ok serious serious time

Beginning of the year about 10 guys in my office including me had a weigh in and we were to see by 6th March who had lost most weight , proportionally

Some money donated was for charity. The looser would have to wear a scuby doo outfit for a week

Ive lost nearly nothing , i lost a stone before xmas but put 8lbs of that back on before the weigh in

whats the best way to loose weight over the weekend

Ill be dancing

Don't eat! Unless its fruit (and I heard somewhere that if you eat citrus fruit you actually lose calories rather than put them on [?] - but what do I know?)
Drink only water!
Have lots of sex.
Visualise yourself exercising and being thinner. It might work but I wouldn't bet on it.

Every time you want to eat anything loaded with calories think of the Scooby Doo outfit. At least when you're wearing it you'll be able to scoff as much as you like cos that's mainly what he and Shaggy did wasn't it?

Life's to short - go dance, eat and enjoy. Who cares how skinny or not your are?

Do you think the above application will get me a job as a Weight Watcher woman?

In That Case:
The marriage to my First Wife was a success cos it lasted 6 1/2 years - much longer than any of her predacessors:confused:

The marriage to my Second wife was a success cos it lasted 16 1/2 years (and produced 3 fantastic kids)

The most successful however was my 3rd Wife . . .

I got this e-mail - mad me smile :) Apologies if you've seen it before

I've learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is
stalk them and hope they panic and give in...

I've learned that one good turn gets most of the blankets.

I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people are just jackasses.

I've learned that it takes years to build up trust, and it only takes
suspicion, not proof, to destroy it.

I've learned that whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed.

I've learned that you shouldn't compare yourself to others - they are
more screwed up than you think.

I've learned that depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

I've learned that it is not what you wear; it is how you take it off.

I've learned that you can keep vomiting long after you think you're
finished.

I've learned to not sweat the petty things, and not pet the sweaty
things.

I've learned that ex's are like fungus, and keep coming back.

I've learned age is a very high price to pay for maturity.

I've learned that I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.

I've learned that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are
celebrities.

I've learned that artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.

I've learned that 99% of the time when something isn't working in your
house, one of your kids did it

I've learned that there is a fine line between genius and insanity.

I've learned that the people you care most about in life are taken
from you too soon and all the less important ones just never go away. And
the real pains in the ass are permanent.

Also... isn't it amazing that there's no rain about, but you walk under a tree in dewy conditions and there's a chance the tree will rain on you. The atmosphere/scenery this morning was very cold but beautiful to look at.

Yup.. Coffee and Tea both contain the same active chemicals

(Caffeine is sometimes called "theine" when it's in tea. This is probably due to an ancient misconception that the active constituent is different.)

tea and coffee both also contain theophylline. Theophylline is present only in trace amounts. It is more diuretic, more toxic and less speedy.

Too much Caffeine (from either tea or coffee) can cause
restlessness
nervousness
insomnia
flushed face
gastrointestinal disturbance
muscle twitching / Restless limbs
rambling flow of thought and speech (can you tell I had my coffee this morning? ;) )
cardiac arrhythmia

That random enough for ya ;)

It’s often said that you shouldn’t compare apples and oranges — generally used figuratively, but even looking at it literally you can see that it’s not true. You need to compare apples and oranges when you’re deciding what to pack in your lunch. What you can’t do is compare apples and oranges and somehow conclusively prove that one is better than the other.

Just deleted a spam email from my inbox. However I did notice the text which is presumably randomly generated to pass through spam filters by appearing to make sense. Excerpt is:
When the lover toward an ocean laughs out loud, an eagerly mysterious oil filter beams with joy. If the dolphin falls in love with a crank case about a ski lodge, then a diskette beyond a warranty feels nagging remorse. The globule self-flagellates, and a dolphin around a recliner reads a magazine; however, a gentle crane wisely graduates from the tuba player. For some reason a lot of other spam messages have recently been including text which appears to be from "David Copperfield".

Except that I'm not sure CJ would want to be thought of as angelic.

Yep, I've also read that white feathers mean an angel is watching over you - not sure about the grey one though.

Glad you posted on here Aleks cos can't think of a better thread to put this on...

Was thinking of you last night when I saw a sweet and lovely looking spider in the toilet cubicle I was using at the dance venue last night. Made me think of your avatar, but luckily the spider was on the floor, not in the loo!

I've heard that when angels find a toe nail clipping in their bed they know a human is watching over them...
