There are an increasing number of venues offering coffee and cake after or during dancing

If its during the dancing im happy to let people queue and hope there is some left when the queue dies down

For me the fastest way to organise, is keep drinks and food seperate

Put coffee in jugs and call it decafe or coffee etc

And keep people moving. Thats the worse bit this 'socialising in the queue'. Id prefer a no TALKING keep MOVING and maybe a few large dogs to encourage some movement.

Even at ICE dance half the coffee table wasnt being used

My new technique is to run before the announcement and get in fast

It's the classic wedding-buffet nightmare, isn't it? You always get some old biddy in front who dithers for 10 minutes over what food to pick...

I'd say the answer is to not put the food / drink on one long table, that automatically seems to say "queue here" to the British. Put it on several tables, spread it out, and let people crowd around all four sides, assuming there's space of course.

Yes, I noticed that at ICE

I've only noticed non-caffeine hot drinks (i.e. fruit/herb tea) at Stevenage.

And fruit would be great as an alternative to cake.

Given that fruit/herb infusions and fruit are more expensive than Nescaf, PG and Tunnocks tea cakes, I'd pay extra for healthy.

Put it on several tables, spread it out, and let people crowd around all four sides, assuming there's space of course. That's what they usually do at barn dances (and funerals) here. OK it takes a few moments to bring the tables in and set them up, but if several folk are all doing it at once, its fairly quick. Then there are about 4 or so seperate coffee/tea serving points along the table.

My church has a coffee break in the middle of the morning service (we think its important to spend time talking to each other!) - we have two seperate serving areas so that we get more than one queue to speed things up (with the same biscuits on each! Very important!)

And fruit would be great as an alternative to cake. When we ran our first MJ workshop here in NI (Aug 04) we had fruit available for everyone during the break. I noticed that the salsa weekend workshops now do that too - wonder where they got the idea?

Organisers, please take note!

I've worked long and hard to shift 2 stone over this year, it would be great to have fruit available when I'm in need of a sugar rush too, and am being bombarded with the sight of people stuffing their face with delicious looking cakes and cookies!

:yeah: (only 1, but I do agree a lot :) )

Fruit at Greenwich was a great idea - if you just want a bit of refreshment, and can't be bothered to queue for the bar, it's great.

But, fruit and cookies, please, let's not go nuts here.

(OK, nuts as well, what the heck, it's only 300-odd shopping days to Xmas)

We always offer tea and coffee at our nights. There's never a queue of more than 2. How do we do it? We never announce that the tea and coffee is NOW available - it's available all night.

I'm sure most venues could probably supply a "hot-water" on request -- and then feel free to add your own additives :)

SpinDr.But why should I be discriminated against just because I choose not to poison myself with caffeine? People who drink regular coffee with the poisonous stuff still in have it provided for them. That would be like a venue handing out free cigarettes, wouldn't it?

Do you offer caffeine-free alternatives? I feel a campaign coming on...We offer decaf coffee and those herbal/fruit teas. But dancers are such heathens we've never had to buy a new jar of decaf and the herbal teas aren't very popular either. We also offer water with ice and lemon. We do not offer a lemon-free alternative - although you could always use the tap.
