If you receive an email or link offering 'Messenger 8' then don't touch it with a barge pole.

It is a Trojan and will compromise your machine and spam everyone on your messenger list with the link.

Messenger 8 has not been leaked yet and also has a new name.

7.5 has been around for a while I think since August time, but it was in beta before that.

Messenger 8.0 is now called Windows Live Messenger but no release date even for Beta

I would be inclined to call the actual release a trojan as well to be honest, just to be on the safe side. The other releases had all sorts of security issues. It makes no sense to use it when there are far better alternatives anyway - look here for a full network compatibility list (http://www.bigblueball.com/im/interoperability.php). I currently use GAIM.

I did say there are far better alternatives, if video is your thing, you can use Trillian. I think a client that covers all networks and is less likely to see your computer infested with spyware qualifies as 'far better' and there are many. Everyone one wants something different in a client but out of all the clients I've seen, MSN Messanger is particularly poor.

Maybe once google gets their system sorted out... (Not holding my breath.)

Funnily enough Messenger 8 has been released on Beta by invite only.
The interface is completely different and They have built in VOIP. I am currently trying to find out what else is different and will keep you all posted :D

I will see if I can get some screen shots.
