Wow! That second Dan & lisa move is fantastic!!! (High probability of dislocating shoulders on the first attempt though... :tears:)

Couldn't get the splits one to work though... (as in the clip, not the move, before someone asks...)

Urrrr ... maybe its one move you might want to give a miss to ... Dan and Lisa are among the few couples I've seen make the move look good. I remember Mark W and Jenn (LeRoc Cardiff) take the time to try to teach me the move at Beach Boogie in 99 .... I think they took on more than they bargained for:tears:
Next came across it when we taught it as part of the CTA update (2001?) ... never seen so many accomplished dancers look like beginners ..... a truly humbling experience! The problem (OK, one the many problems) is that the lady ends up doing about three or four clockwise turns and not being able to spot .... try doing that about four or five times and you're soon begging to do windmills for the rest of the night.

Still curious about where the move cames from.... was told by someone years back it was a WCS move but it seems very different to the rest of WCS .... anyone in the know?

I know. I've been there. It's where previous experiences as a student come in handy... (that room spinning around you thing...)

Don't give me a challenge Gus - I'll raise to it no matter how impossible it is (anyone mention body rolls???)

I have taught it a few times, and there are ways of making it (slightly) clearer than it initially appears :really:

it was called the 'tumble dryer' by the teacher at the jive bar in london where i was taught it - as Gus points out - its hard to make it look good ...but is in fact easy to do

I think you'll find that you can't actually download them in the way you are thinking, you can only watch them in real time. If you find a way to download the clips though, then please let me know.

i wouldnt have said that if i hadnt already downloaded them would I, but then you've downloaded them too its impossible not too :) Any web page you visit and everything you view is first copied into your browser cache. If you select 'media player' for the clip format the file will be 'name.wmv' if its quicktime it'll be 'name.mov' - the 'name' will be a name your browser made up depending on which browser you use - also the cache location will depend on which browser you use ...so it's easier to just do a search for files over 3mb in size (all clips are about 3.7mb) and use *.wmv or *.mov as the file name. Once you have found where they are just open that directory and copy the files out as you download more of them.

Might be user error on my part, but I've found this isn't always the case if you're viewing a clip via a "flashy" interface like the ClubMayan one (this is in IE6, which I think has some level of "don't let people copy stuff they're not supposed to").

But if you can find skip the intro screens, and go straight to the URL for the video clip itself, it does appear in the cache.

For ClubMayan, you might want to go directly to

www.clubmayan.com/video/salsa2003/week1/a1/hi.wmv etc.

Currently weeks 1-5 are up, and there are 2 amateurs and 2 professionals per week (a1,a2,p1,p2).

Why people insist on forcing people to watch their clips "live" and at a fixed (tiny) screen size is beyond me - even with broadband, you can't always get enough bandwidth to make it work.

Yup. Totally agree. Tiny video is not my favourite thing.
I think you're right about IE6, files are hidden on purpose for some reason. Prior versions of IE never did that, tried it on IE5 and the cache is readily available. Hopefully not many of you are using IE6 :).

Good URL tip too would be easier to save the files that way. The best browser to use (for anything really) is Opera 7, the cache is easily accessible, its far faster than any other browser Ive used and ive had no problem on any web page ....except for argos.co.uk which is badly programmed - you have to pretend Opera is IE to access the site (theres an option for it).

Another option is to use an offline browser prog like webstripper http://www.solentsoftware.com/ and this will fetch and filter just the movies into a directory of your choosing.

Thanks for the technical tips.

Has anyone checked out the 2002 Professional Category Winners?

http://www.clubmayan.com/video/051802/a1/hi.wmv

There's an interview with the couple at the end of their routine. Now that's the kind of interrogation I could endure!

I wasn't a great fan of salsa until I watched some of these clips, but I was in awe of the energy and style on display. Now I'm just worried that modern jive is extremely pedestrian in comparison.

Now I'm just worried that modern jive is extremely pedestrian in comparison Most of these moves could be adapted for Modern Jive. The style is something specific to the dancers and the music. Modern Jive will never look pedestrian when performed by real dancers.

In case anyone wants the links to the other files. And if you right-click on the links, you get the option to 'Save Target As...' - so you never have to look at the cache.

Being controversial here but...

All the dancers in those salsa clips are from one city, LA.

They have to be because the competition runs over a month or two all in LA.

London is about the same size as LA and I believe that in London there are the same number of people doing ceroc/modern jive as salsa.

Yet there is no one in jive remotely approaching the sort of level we see with the salsa dancers.

Perhaps style and energy is something individual rather than relating to the dance. But if that is so (and it sounds true), why don't we ever see jive dancers of that calibre?

bigdjiver

Salsa has been around for at least 35 years. It has grown at a tremendous rate, but nothing like the rate at which Modern jive is expanding. There are many people who have experienced it since childhood. There are far more competitions. There are far more professionals. All of these things contribute to the standard we see. All modern jive needs now is a real promoter / entrepreneur who can get some sponsorship organised and the media interest and we will be one the way to having more prestigious and financially rewarding competitions and media coverage, and we will see the same standard. In fact, we may see the same people.

Now I'm just worried that modern jive is extremely pedestrian in comparison. Personally some of those clips were a complete "turn off" for me in the first micro second of watching them !! Perhaps that's because I don't treat dancing like a spectator sport. And the more I dance the less I am "turned on" by the competition stuff. Of course, I admire the skill - and some of the moves are amazing !!! but I don't aspire to that "level".

When things are rehearsed and practised to death I can't help feeling that some of the magic has gone. Perhaps I have a very romantic and fairytale notion of dance. For me it is a musically-inspired conversation between two people, a double trouble with the music leading us on a 4 minute journey..... Perhaps I compare it to sex (I can see the replies to this already and being completely misunderstood....) I wouldn't want to practise my moves and angles so that it looked good to the audience. I think that's what porn stars do.....

There are some performances in films which I adore and although they are rehearsed with absolute precision, it seems as if it has all happened by chance ... the Spanish bit in Strictly Ballroom is miles more magical to me than all the competition stuff, or the tango scene in Scent of a Woman is just breathtaking .... Perhaps I also believe that we are all capable of creating magical moments, any age any height any weight, any anything (and indeed we are all capable of enjoying great sex I hope !) not just the "professional" types who are highly skilled and practise hours every week and, if I can be simplistic and cynical, have to have fake tan, a fake smile and a fake flower in their hair.

The great thing about any kind of dance is that we can enjoy ourselves no matter how many trophies we have in our display cabinets. Don't get me wrong, I continually strive to be a better dancer and I travel the country to go to workshops to get better. But it's not with a view to performing, it's with a view to having a better exchange with my partner (whoever that might be). Ultimately, my aim is to enjoy spontaneous moments of musical magic with a "stranger". I am lucky and honoured that my fellow CEROCers give me bucket loads of such opportunities in my lovely country called Pedestrianland.

From Wendy I don't treat dancing like a spectator sport.
"sport" I think is the key word. You appear to like watching dance as an art form rather than a form of athletics. I am with you on that.

The great thing about any kind of dance is that we can enjoy ourselves.[/QUOTE]
For me the really great thing is other peoples enjoyment. One of the great magic moments Ceroc has given me was at a Valentines dinner/dance where we were the only Cerocers. I glanced down the dancefloor and all I saw was people looking our way with expressions ranging through enjoyment, incredulity to envy. For me the greatest trophy is a smile where there was not one before. I sometimes do the old rock'n'roll move of sliding partner through my legs. I cannot imagine that that is enjoyable for her per se, but we both love seeing the reaction of beginners.

I don't like watching dancing that much. I'd rather do the dancing myself. I sometimes watch couples (cabaret teams) who blow me away (I was close to tears several times at Blackpool cos I was just so moved by the performances) but not that often and not at a CEROC class night or even the party nights really (maybe I should - I could learn a trick or two). And I do kind of treat it like a sport in some ways. I don't drink alcohol before or during (I do afterwards - I never said I was an angel !!), I sweat buckets and I burn off many a calorie in a CEROC night and no longer go to the gym. If I'm honest , I am a bit of a show off and have enjoyed admiration at the odd wedding or nightclub.

But really I want to dance, to feel the music and to share what I'm feeling/experiencing with another human being, to exchange, to communicate, to CONNECT that's it... to really CONNECT with the music and that other person... I'm on a little musical journey and I'm hoping they will come along ... and sometimes ... I'll share their journey too... (that's why I'm not the best follower in the world!!) I don't give a **** what I look like to the outside world most of the time (not that I don't brim over with glee when I get a compliment from someone watching !!) To be on the same planet, the same wavelength for a brief moment is what it is about for me. Mostly, I am oblivious to the other people in the room. For 4 minutes I am transported to a different (fantasy perhaps ?) magical place....

So for me it's 5% spectator thing, 20% sport thing and 75% that other magical stuff....

When I do the cabaret in London those % will be different cos I'll be there to put on a show and to win - so that's a different story .....

Each to their own.... enjoy !!!!

Wxxx Fantastic post, Wendy (I keep agreeing with you today!) - the above were my favourite bits.

I wish I could say I don't give a **** what I look like to others, but I think I'm way too self-conscious. All the same, my dancing's just for fun, and just for me and my partner - I'm not sure I like the idea that someone might be watching. If I feel they are, then I get all nervous and can't do anything right! In 5 or 6 years, I've never jived outside a Ceroc venue, and don't think I'd ever dare, unless there was a whole crowd of us doing it.

Still, at our venue, we've got Kim (Blackpool aerials and spotlight champion) and when she and Andrew start doing their moves, everyone else just fades into the background....

When I know I'm being videod I go all weird....and am rarely aware of anyone ever watching me (even if I'd be kinda flattered if they were a little bit impressed ) but if I think they are, I go all weird... and that's why I really love it when I am just "in the moment" with my partner and the whole world just disappears......

Not jive, but amusing:
