View Full Version : Ashtons - still cool?

David Bailey

I noticed there's not been much talk about Ashtons over the past couple of months.

So, pursuing my theory about the Ten Cool People (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/showthread.php?p=147088#post147088) who decide what venues are cool in London, have these ten left Ashtons?

Yeah, but I never go anywhere cool on principle, so I wouldn't know.

Oh, OK then, no-one ever tells me until 12 months after the event... :tears:

FWIW, I think it's still pretty cool. But I'm not One Of The Ten...

Yeah, I thought your were one of The Ten somehow... it was the hooded cloak, sibilant whispering, and glowing red eyes that gave me my first subtle clues.

The night you and the posse came to Ashton's was one of the best nights there ever IMHO...but I will admit to having a bias towards the Scottish contingent, even towards Scotland in general actually...

From The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy, almost
I interviewed over three hundred dancers when I was compiling my history of Modern Jive, and I asked each of them about any information they may have about The Ten. Most of them gave me the usual hodge-podge of rumor, though some of our most illustrious dancers adamantly insisted that The Ten did not exist at all.

I pieced together the various fragments of rumor, and this is the rather fanciful portrait of the organization as I imagine it. Now remember, Mr James, this portrait is crudely sketched in the crayons of innuendo. Supposedly, membership of The Ten is the highest honour a dancer can aspire to in Modern Jive. Much of its mystique lies in its total secrecy. There is a bond of honour among the members never to reveal their membership, not even to their wives and family.

There are various theories on selection. Some dancers told me they heard the inductees were enrolled at Hammersmith, others insisted on the Ceroc Champs. One poor idiot was sure it was a WCS plot. A lindy-hopper thought it was a plot to keep swingers off the dance floor. I interviewed many sad dancers, Mr James.
(I'm a great fan of the original book. I wear the ring.)

Having discussed this at great length tonight, I now believe knowledge of the Ten is a Heisenberg-y thing - you can either know who they are, or where they go to - never both at the same time.

Or, in my case, neither. :tears:

But I'm sure they exist - there's way more evidence for them than for the Flying Spaghetti Monster, for example - and everyone knows that exists.

I loved my night at Ashtons with Lucy Locket and Zebra Woman (and lots of other splendid people) :D Admittedly when you go somewhere for the first time there's sometimes added value through novelty but I genuinely had a great time. Doesn't help with the temperature question, I was impressed by the size of the fan though. ;)

Well, if I knew that...

They're easy to spot, if you know the trick:

You walk up to anyone you suspect of being one of the Ten and ask them "What is the coolest venue to go to?".

Their answer will inevitably be: "Hey- wherever I'm going."

Yeah, that's right, I'm plagiarising Terry Pratchett. Sue me.

Precisely. :D

Because Cool is not necessarily Hip(sters)

I am so tempted to draw up my list of The Ten suspects (otherwise known as The Cerocerati).

It's actually quite tricky, because they have to be punters and not teachers, so their profile is necessarily low, that's why no-one knows who they are - it's like "See that girl there, I bet she's one."

I suspect they work behind the scenes - more like the History Monks than the Monks of Cool, really.

So, ZW is an obvious choice, but she's too high-profile. However, who knows, it might be her friend Miss Conduct, I've had my suspicions about her for a while, she's just a bit too perfect to be a mere mortal...

Any other suggestions?

Their answer will inevitably be: "Hey- wherever I'm going."Unless you're so unhip it's a wonder your bum doesn't fall off, in which case:

"You don't need to know the coolest venue"

Possibly not - they may have been hypnotized by The One...

Nope. Geeky would be to reply "But he appears in two episodes, damnit..."

Oops...

Well, I think we've clearly established that myself, RK and DavidY are neither Cool nor members of The Ten.

So, that's three down, 399,997 to go...

Perhaps you should think about opening your own place in attempt to catch them ... " if you build it, they will come"

Maybe you should be looking further afield (pun intended)

Very very Harsh!
a lot of people like them. I fing them hard to dance to but ok to listen to while having a drink and watching the hyperactives wear themselves silly and leave the floor free for us for the rest of the evening.

It's the The Corpse and The Groper Lucky Day !!!

Think i might just opt for a late appearance or sabotage of amp leads.. Bout time for a change of bands dont you think - if we have to have the live stuff. Anyway i am predicting they will be wearing the yellow suits, they will do a piano solo which will last enough time to go to the loo and back and a very long version of "I aint go no bady" should be enough time to nip off to Asda in Watford and back in time for the next song. ok i must stop before i say something not nice!

I do not like live bands as they feel that they have to "improvise" on perfectly good original music and mess about with the tempo, words or even the tune (emm). Mind you i do not like anything that gets in the way of freestyle - classes, repeat cabarets etc. And i sometimes have to pay more to get in!

ok i must stop before i say something not nice!

We already have! But i say live and let live. They can have their band if it make them so bloody happy.(at least you have said something, otherwise they would come back at Christmas!) Give you a chance to have a dance with two favourite men as mentioned!
