I know it is a girly thing, but I always give my car a name - my current baby is called Nick (has something to do with the reg as it is NK  )

My GPS is Nicky, or Little Nick

Haven't named my laptop, might be an idea, it is better than saying "You stupid thing" or words like that

Does any one else name their car or gadgets etc.

Does any one else name their car or gadgets etc.I have named my (newly borrowed) piano "The Pope", because he's a fat bugger, and by the time the crew had finished manoevering him up the stairs I felt like releasing white smoke from the chimney and making a statement from an upstairs window (in lieu of a balcony.)

Oh, and my computers are called Lydia and Clytemnestra.

Does any one else name their car or gadgets etc. There's something about naming things like cars, computers or instruments - if they play an important part of our lives, anthropomorphising them makes the time spent driving, sitting at the desk or playing music feel less lonely. So my examples are:

I used to have a car called Clottie (because it was white and stodgy and came from Devon).

Also all my musical instruments have/have had names - my piano Janette, my old violin Joanna (given by the previous owner, but I kept it), my new violin Marta, my viola Bernard and my (Spanish) guitar Angelo. Haven't named my keyboard yet though - I think that might be because it obviously has no personality :(

And of course all my teddy bears have names, even though I got most of them when I was in my late teens...

Call me boring, but I don't name my things...

OK, so all the things on my computer network have names, but that's only because it's difficult to remember which one is 10.0.0.3 and which one is 10.0.0.5.

My laptop is called "Palm", my printer is called "Miami" and my Mac is called "Copacabana". Can you see the theme? :D

But I normally refer to them as "my laptop, my printer and my mac".

I did name my phone "Sexy Phone", mainly because it was sexy, but there was also an ulterior motive... Can you guess why?

Bluetooth device listing?

My iBook is called Yuna; my evil PC Lulu and my slightly less evil PC Tidus. Err... my iPod Shuffle is called Moogle. OK all devices on my network and such have silly names.

I changed cars last year, same make and model, just the latest version. When the new car arrived, there were a few little issues with getting things sorted the way I wanted them, which I had been used to on the previous one (Euge, or Eugenia - from the reg no, BTW). We had a little settling down period, whilst I got used to it. Subsequently not only did he become a he rather than a she, but just became known as "Car". Car definitely has a personality and seems to have preferred passengers. To this end, Car has an invisible "reserved" sign on the front passenger seat.

My motor bike was already named when I got it - "Carbo-Trump". This is from its special Carbon fibre bodywork and the fact that it's a Triumph, which are known colloquially as Trumpets

At my flying club there are two identical aeroplanes, yet I much prefer one to the other. They are just machines, but they do seem to have different personalities. Odd, isn't it?

My car usually gets called "a piece of ****" when it's messing me about because I haven't bonded with it and I don't like it. I know it gets me from AtoB and will probably go horribly wrong just to spite me so I have to say it under my breath whilst revving the crap out of it. My beautiful new laptop doesn't have a name but I do stroke it and tell it that it's lovely.

If you've ever done any NLP, that's referred to as perception is projection. You see one plane as being better, so it is.

Just thought i'd drop that into the conversation.

After pondering i did have a car once that the gf referred to as Hughey, more because the number plate ended HWY. Does that count. I still referred to it as the car.

Talking of which i did see a car with the number plate T000LD (T00 0LD) how cool is that?

Ummm....

My ex named my ceramic kiln for me, after I told him it was old, yet reliable: Old Faithful. But when he wrote the name on it, he forgot to cross the 't', so it read 'Old Failhful'. For some unknown reason every firing went wrong after that, until I spotted the spelling mistake, and crossed the 't'. After that it was working as it should again! Weird!!!

I have to agree with you! I have named my car's in the past but this one tends to be called all sorts when its playing me up! Hence i don't feel like i've gelled with it!! When its not playing me up, i just call it 'motor' it doesn't deserve any other name!!

Yup, I name things. Don't drive, so I don't have a car but we always named them when I was growing up- we had Rust Heap, followed by Genghis Khar, followed by Lerx (the last one was the number plate).

And all our pets- Bill and Ben the goldfish, Haji Baba the tabby cat (Dad's cat, Dad's name choice) who was followed by Omar and Ambrose the rescue cats. Haji Baba was a mischief maker in Persian mythology, and that suited Haji, who managed to get the Sunday roast off the side and onto the floor where he proceeded to lick it thoroughly, very well. Mum says of Omar and Ambrose that they seem to have taken on the personality of the namer- Ambrose was named by my brother, and is a very placid, really quite lazy cat. Gets up for dinner, then goes off and (we think) charms other families into giving him more food. He's quiet, but when he wants something you know where he is. Omar, who I named (when we first got him he looked like an Egyptian statue, and needed a suitably exotic name- it's Omar short for Omar Khayam), on the other hand, never shuts up. As Mum put it, "you ALWAYS know when Omar's around". He's enthusiastic and excited by everything, he wants to know what you're doing and whether he can join in.

All my dolls and toys had names.

The only thing I don't name is computer equipment- but now I'm thinking I might have to!

A friend of mine used to call me Popocatepetl, because of a dream I had once about a small hamster like creature that lived in the air-conditioning system and could only be captured with a bowl of chocolate sauce, called a pommefilitie (yes, I had eaten cheese before bedtime).

Years ago, the fire station at Aldergrove/Belfast International airport had a cat called Seefa (as in Seefa Cat) and a dog called "F*** Off". Every time there was an argument at the station and people started swearing at each other, the dog would run in with his tail wagging which caused much amusement to the onlookers.

I don't have a car or any pets to name .... but I've named just about everything else.

My computers are Fibonacci and Conway (not very famous mathematicians).

The squirrels in my parents back garden started with Rambo, then worked through Gybo, Lee-Ho,Kilimanjaro, Kato, Oregano. If I still lived there, next would be Asbo.

My pot plants are Chris (Chyrsanthemum), May(Japanese Maple), Amy(Amaryllis),Druscilla(Droscera).

A silly friend who hadn't named her fluffy toys soon had them tagged: Dub Choc Croc and Hiss the snake.

All this, then I come up with the lamest User name on this entire Forum :(

What!!??!! You have to name fluffy toys! It's practically abuse not to! :what:

I won't go into the myriad of fluffy toy names I have used (it would be as unique as naming family members)... but I have to admit my current car is Charlotte (the Toyota Starlet), who I much prefer over the Fiat Punto I had in London called Carrie (misnamed while trying to think of "Sybil" that movie about a woman with split personalities, my car would be quite unpredictable sometimes and use the radio to communicate changing stations randomly and unexpectedly, e.g. she once said "I don't like it" and then the station switched!).

We also have creatively named Big'Puter, Little'Puter, and Chuzzle (ironically named after a fab little game that I wanted to install on my new laptop but wouldn't work, darn it).

Do we name things to bond or do we name things because we're bored? Or is it just easier to talk about them? I think its fun. :D

Animals aren't things IMO, so my cats all have/have had names.

Lucy-fur was one of my better efforts (sadly she died young several years ago). None of the rest have been particularly interesting, but new vets are always surprised when they first meet Snowy (of course she's one of the blackest cats you ever saw...)

My VW Golf is called Dotty after her reg. number and also that she has dots down either side of the front doors. Although the rest of my family call her the tank as she a Mk 2 model and solid.

I named all my mums cars as well when I was on her insurance only seems right when most people spend a lot of their time in one.
