Heard May Camber was really good so I really want to go this time, but my boss wants to send me to our US office sometime in November :( - wish they'd hurry up and sort out the dates so I know whether I can book on this or not.

EDIT: Have voted very optimistically!

The trouble with the voting options is that people can't change from "planning to book" to "already booked." And some people's plans never materialise. :tears: Paul, you picked the wrong option by several hours!

Right, thats one weekend over and I want another one.

Anybody any idea where I can get details of classes and teachers - more specifically if they are having any specialist WCS teachers there?

Also, can anyone advise on what the blues room is like at Camber? I am assuming it wont have big open doors to cool it like Southport but I do remember someone once saying it was quite good nonetheless.

Spedcialist WCS? Previously they have had David and Lily Barker (last time I think Nigel and Nina had a go), they may have had Paul & Catriona - not sure.

The blues room is nothing like Southport. It's on the ground floor (the main venue is upstairs) and has rather a nightclub atmosphere - little natural light and cerrtainly no verandah. It's similar to the Latin quarter room at Southport, with pillars, and a smallish floor with a large additional area of temporary flooring. There is an adjacent bar - but no dance area immediately in front of it -and little passing traffic. All in all, nowhere near as good as Southport in my opinion. As a venue, irrespective of the music.

The blues room at Camber does however a better floor than the sticky one at Southport and on my previous two occassions have really enjoyed the kind of nightclub/jazz club feel to the blues room. However as Yogi Bear says the blues rooms are totally different at the two venues but both have there various merits. To be honest though when you're dancing the blues the venue isn't half as important as your partner.

Yeah, I like the dance floor immediately adjacent to the stage in the Camber blues room but that's about it. Otherwise Southport wins.
Interesting how the area in front of the bar at the Southport blues room has become the preferred spot for the 'elite' (and I use the word advisedly) dancers

Don't know about elite, to my eye there was a lot more slot dancing and WCS in this area though.

Think both floors are quite good though, the proper floor would also be possibly the preferred option, but I like teh temporary floor as well as it's good for slides, etc,

As you say, it's the music, the dance and the partner that are paramount :)

I found I did almost all my dancing there, but that was only because I kept bumping into people to dance with every time I tried to get to the bar. Poor Marc, he often had to wait over an hour for me to finally make it to the bar and get him a drink while he was dj'ing.

One of the greatest things with regard to the S'port blues room was the coolness of it with the doors open etc.

I am assuming the same cannot be said for Camber? Im hoping someone will say otherwise :o

hmm..... The Swing/Blues room is downstairs and in comparison doesn't get that hot, and there are a couple of those large industrial fans which really help.

Although you may prefer the dance halls in Southport, the accomodation and the grounds are far better at Camber (not that Camber is that wonderful) and the Southport grass area was full of cigarette stubbs and the staff in Camber could understand English  my opinion form the June event

I reckon they are as good as each other, both have good points and neg points - at the end of the day, it is the people and the music that make the event   and most of us go to both :worthy: :yeah:

BTW the only thing to that Southport has that Camber doesn't which would add major brownie points IMHO is DANCE DEMON :worthy:   !!!!! Can you hear that Franco and Colin Shaul :flower:

And thank you Angelique for your kind words, I really, really enjoyed our dances as well. It is pretty much decided that we'll be heading down to Camber, mailed Franco the other day to see that there was still places for me and 2 friends and just waiting for him to confirm before booking my flights, so hopefully they'll be plenty more yummy dances in November

I'll be coming to this weekender with a friend (can't wait  ) and we're hoping to spend some time in London afterwards before flying back to the U.S. (I'll be in London for one day and he'll be there a week). What do you think the chances are of meeting some fun people at the weekender who live in London and who'd like to hang out?

Don't forget to introdce yourself to me at Camber Lily, I'll be at the reception area most of the day time (booking private lesses to anyone who wants them with any one the Camber teachers) - will be happy to introduce you both to the London dancers (as well as the forumites)

Also remember a photo of your brother (sorry if I have this wrong) who is going to Rhythm Riot, so I can introduce myself to him

Going to be in Folkestone the weekend of Camber, anyone know if it's possible to get a pass just for the saturday night? I used to go every year to Camber but haven't been for the last 2. Then it was the whole weekend or nothing, but i always somehow managed to get a pass from someone to get my dad in for the evening (he's local). Usually someone that hadn't turned up or something. So has it changed or is it still all or nothing? I will email Franck, but just wondered if anyone on here knew the answer!

Would love some details but nevertheless, if they have a blues room it will do me.

Does anyone know if they play music during the day so you can dance. I was thinking back to Southport you see. So lovely being able to have a few slow smoochy dances in the afternoon ;)

Southport had the facilities to have 3 classes on at once while still having the blues room area available in the afternoons. Which was lovely, though found it hard to drag myself away to go to a workshop (though glad I did).

Im a bit worried about the Blues room timetable. Along with the main hall it lists the Gala all-night style as "Mainly modern music" :what: :what:

:yeah: Am a touch wary of this, although there is a lunchtime blues and swing freestyle which could be good.

However, if the DJ's are similar to the previous Camber events then I'm pretty sure it'll just end up as a normal blues room anyway (crosses fingers).

ok you go sick on saturday (tell work on the monday you couldnt get to sleep till 6am on that saturday night and were sweating a lot, dont say it was due to dancing !)

and go to your friends birthday next yr unless there 97 or 30 /40 etc and its a special one.... then you tell them to hold off for a week:mad:

re wedding next year , bit more difficult , suggest you have time to fall out big time or sleep with groom before the date so you get to Southport :yeah:

Well, I tried

I have been in contact with Franco over the past couple of days to try and arrange some kind of chillout freestyle in the afternoons at Camber on the Saturday and Sunday. I wanted to make it like Southport were the people who didnt want to do the workshops could just go and have a relaxed dance and a chat to some 'inventive' tracks.

Originally I was just going to take my boombox thing and set up on a spare patch of floor. I wanted to post on here and just let the word spread in case anyone else fancied having a dance.
I emailed Franco to ask if I could do that and he informed me that there was a 3rd room if i wanted it. (and possibly a sound system).
I was going to beg the djs going there that they could have free reign for a no-holds-barred chilled afternoon.

Unfortunately Franco insisted that it would have to be advertised on the flyers.
I just didnt want to commit to having to ensure that there was someone present at the decks from 2 till 7 so I have said that i will leave it

I am gutted as I dont really want to do any workshops and dont know what else to do. The afternoons at Southport were the best part for me.
I am still going to take my portable system so if anyone notices a few odd people dancing in strange places feel free to join in

ps. I just want to say thankyou to Franco if he reads this. I cant see many organisers even considering such a request so late on. It was really good of him to take time out to email me
I understand his reasons for not wanting it kept low key.

Lynn

Good try. Maybe its something that Franco will consider for future weekenders? I notice there is dancing at lunchtime in both rooms which sounds good. I admit I loved the afternoon dancing at Southport too and found it hard to drag myself away for a workshop. But then again time spent not doing workshops can be 'resting time' in preparation for dancing all night!

Not long to go now!

Yep, Im still really looking forward to it

The only trouble with the freestyles in the afternoons is that its just over an hour long and its usually standard freestyle tracks according to those that have spoken to.
I just wanted a chillout session with some t-jive'esq music.

Some of the classes look interesting during the day - dunno what "Shim Sham" is, but it sounds, err, interesting (Sat, 2pm) and Tango Jive in Harlem (Sat 4pm).

There's also a Blues & Swing Freestyle in the afternoon in the lower venue, that may be more to your style?

You're maybe thinking of the "Southport essential items (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6149)" thread?

There's also the Lory's Lovely List (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/showpost.php?p=60408&postcount=79) post which I think is pretty useful. Assuming you've got an 18-wheeler truck to cart it in of course :innocent:

if you haven't got an electric blanket (or a woman:whistle: ) to keep you warm at night, try 'blo-drying' in the bed, on a hot setting, it takes some of the cold and dampness off your sheets before you get in! It makes it slightly more bareable ;)

Maybe we should arrange that long-forgotten forumetta shopping trip, for any local-ish girlies who aren't going. Or you could come over and cook me dinner (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/showpost.php?p=167133&postcount=12):flower: :worthy:

Hmmm, is there a plan to meet up at Camber -- ok let me rephrase that is there a *public* plan to meet up at Camber, e.g. all Forumites to congregate at midnight on Friday next to ZW's portrait (*) in the main ballroom -- or is just the usual informal bump into you in the blues room (or possibly the salsa room now).

SpinDr

(*) Yes, there is a cartoon lady zebra painted on the back wall in the main hall -- or at least there was.

OFFICIAL FORUMITE GATHERING
11pm - downstairs - to the right of stage (if on dance floor) by big fan, near to the bar
just after Viktor's class and the start of the evening for this dancehall
(23.00-06.00 Gala. Mainly Blues, Smooth & Swing music) - not sure who the DJ is ??

First there save the tables for us - we could also use this as a dumping place for our bags etc., so we can 'bump' into each other during the evening for some gossip etc.,

I did have some wrist bands, kindly donated to me by the lovely Annalisa, but there is not enough to go round, so might think of another way to identify us

- off out dancing now - will check forum on my return later

I couldn't get the wrist bands - but I could print labels with everyone's name on from the above list

As I will be at reception most of the time you could pick them up from me (I will wear my Minnie Mouse T-Shirt for those who don't know me) - we could stick them to our clothes ready for our 11pm gathering at the meeting place in order that we can introduce ourselves, they wont leave a mark and you can throw them away after should you wish to

Minnie, I love you - you're one of the nicest, sweetest and most generous people I know. And I'll bite your hand off if you try to pin something on me. And with my new avatar, I can do it you know.

I know, I know, I've got a real problem with authority, tell me about it...

David, dearest, where does it say that people want to limit their socialising to forumites?

I'm not going to Camber, but remembering Southport (if we can mention the two on the same thread without causing an excess of something, leading to creation of a black hole...) it's kinda nice to put faces to names.

If you don't like it, just don't turn up at the meeting place. It'll make it fun for everyone else spending the weekend playing "Find the DavidJames" and fun for you running away from them.

SeanHaven't been to Camber before but if they are like the chalets at Southport they probably don't hold the heat much better than a tent! That's fine in the summer months, I think its because its November its an issue. But I'm sure if everyone brings a warm coat for going over to the venue (I like the track trousers idea of Dawn's for the walk over, for those times I want to wear a skirt dancing), a warm jumper or fleece to wear when in the chalet, and a hot water bottle/person to keep you warm in bed (delete as appropriate), then it will be quite manageable!

Put it this way it's FREEZING and it may not be such a good idea putting up a tent as it's usually really windy too

Take electric fan heaters plus lots of money for the meter (or a calor gas heater if you can stand the additional moisture). I'd recommend your own bedding plus an additional duvet to lie on - it'll insulate you from the damp mattresses.

and a hot water bottle/person to keep you warm in bed (delete as appropriate)
Take both!

Its bloody fine , just whinging from southern jessies

Put the heaters on and its more then warm enough and if you really get cold just put the oven on or the rings on for a bit

I cant talk for the bigger apartments but the smaller ones can become like ovens

If you switch all the heating off ,keep all the windows open , it may get cold

electricity doesnt cost that much, lareger apartments it free any way ??

How far north is Hemel?

No matter what the tough northerners say, take the heaters, the hot water bottles and the extra duvet. It's a great weekend - shame to have it spoilt by freezing in the chalet. "Any fool can be uncomfortable".

Ok it doesnt get 'freezing' there, not in early November anyway. The latest forcast for Fri and Sat

------------------------------------------------
Friday

14°C 10°C 29 moderate 1023 82

Saturday

11°C 5°C 17 moderate 1016 81
-------------------------------------

If you feel the cold take water bottles and heaters and anything else . You probably do anyway if you think its 'cold'

If people think its freezing or feel its freezing go to pontins and be moved, clealry your heaters are not working.

Im taking everything besides the kitchen sink. I tend to go overboard no matter where im going  With a 20kg weight allowance on the flight, I can't have too many luxuries with me, but I am going to try and fit in a lightweight sleeping bag. Unfortunately I dont think I have any extra sleeping bags or duvets that aren't going to be used. Otherwise I would have brought some extra down with me incase you found it too cold :(
I left most of my stuff back at my Manchester home last time I went back.

All I could offer for assistance would be the bedding out of my chalet. Whether you would want it may be a different matter !

Have a safe journey down tomorrow everyone, and take particular care on that awful twisting road into Camber. Don't let those viscious bends get the better of you :(

Looking forward to meeting and dancing with you all

I was told my last message was a tad ambiguous. So here goes my attempt at clarity:

I need a lift to Camber either very late Friday (after 11pm) or anytime Saturday, from London!

If you know anyone driving down at that time, then let me know!

Cheers.
Have no fears.
Take time changing gears.

Excited too! but so much to do! Wish I didnt have work today. 8 hours work to do in town:sad: Need to buy some new smalls as mine have seen better days. Need to get the car cleaned as i have never bothered and its a struggle to see out the windows. And to top it all I feel so tired. The wind (not my wind) kept me awake most of the night with the trees banging on the roof.

11 hours to go and I will be on my way:clap:

Cant wait:clap:

Need my computer to crash so i can get off the forum!..
