What was the first car you bought (or was bought for you) - and what do you drive now ?

Mine was a Ford Angler (just like the Police Car in Heartbeat :waycool: ) passed my test in it too

My current car is a Nissan Micra - very diddy but has lots of gismos (sp?) sad that I am, just lurf these extras - including parking sensors :worthy:

My first car was a Renault 5, which, I discovered subsequently (when somebody tailended me), was only held together by the paintwork!

Currently I have a Peugot 106, which is a good little car.

My current car is a Nissan Micra - NOT SO diddy :worthy:

My first car (shared with ex partner) was a run down Austin Allegro - don't think it lasted very long actually but it did the job.

My latest car - had it for 6 years now is the same as Minnie's but not so posh (my one). It's 10 years old and I love it to bits (so long as it keeps getting through the MOT at a reasonable price... and then I'll rethink).

(By the way it's not so diddy  if I ever meet you I will explain why  )

Great thread Minnie - brought back loads of happy memories *sigh*

First car was a Triumph Herald, (dad's pal was going to give it to the scrapyard) the one with the bonnet that opened "the other way" and the white rubber bumpers.......fantastic car, wish I still had it, but unfortunately I didn't have the money it needed to be spent on restoration :tears:

Now I've got a VW Polo Saloon - it's got a tardis for a boot, which is well handy :clap:

My first was a Triumph 2000 estate.....which I got for nowt, coz the owner thought it needed a new clutch.......but turned out to be just a slave cylinder that was knackered(much easier and cheaper to fix)....
Current car is a Vauxhall Astra 1.7 TDI estate.........estate is handy for lugging all the DJ gear about...like a van with windows really :)

oh memories!! my first car was a Austin 1100 that my dad bought. I remember the bonnet was white and the rest of it was a light grey and beige. Dad then tried to match up the bonnet by hand painting it the same as the rest of the car. Although he tried very hard to get the colour right, it just didnt work. And there were bits of brush stuck in the gloss paint which he had used - ah bless!!

My current car is a Fiesta which i really dont like that much. The only good thing about it is the fuel consumption on long journeys. Now if there are any "single" rich men out there that would love to buy me a new car just pm me (please!!).. :flower:

First car: Metro, red. It got rear-ended after 3 weeks, which introduced me to the joys of the writing-off insurance process.

(Second car: Golf, also red. It also got written-off; hmmm, there's a pattern there somewhere...)

Current car: Alfa 147, silver. I haven't managed to write it off yet.

I've always driven hatchbacks, mainly because they're so much more drivable in the city. And, at least until my current car (bit of a guzzler), they're more economical.

My first car was given to me by my Gran. It was her old Morris Marina. :D My friends all had similar cars at the time - an Austin Allegro, a Vauxhall Viva and a VW Beetle. We loved those old cars!

Currently I drive a Smart which I bought from eBay. (I did have a Micra last year, but that was a boring company car, which replaced my first Smart which I loved to bits & wished I'd never sold. Smarts are fun! ).

I was working for an independent garage when I passed my test, so my first car was an ancient Citroen Visa someone had given them in PX - I bought it for £150 (and got £100 on trade in two years later, bargain!).

My current car is a Ford Escort 1600 16v, which I loathe, because it's boring and won't "pull" up hills like my lovely lovely Citroen BX (deaded due to serious age and MOT failure).

But it's (touch wood) reliable and relatively cheap to maintain. It's 9 years old and I just intend to spend the bare minimum on it, run it until it becomes uneconomical, then throw it away and get something nicer.

My first car was a motorbike. A red Yamaha 100. I was single, didn't mind getting cold and wet and loved that bike even though I fell off it quite a few times. It got written off when someone pulled out of a side turning and I flew over his bonnet leaving a squashed motorbike impaled in the wing of a Cortina :tears:

My current car is a green Discovery. Very boring, but goes anywhere, carries anything, tows anything - but very expensive to fix if things go wrong.

My first car was a Morris Minor “split screen” convertible

That was followed by a Renault Dauphine

But my favourite car was a Renault 4

Which could carry a 17-foot zodiac a 25 hp out board and two complete sets of diving gear with a trailer or a roof rack

I now have a very boring bema

I've only been driving a few years so am only on my second car - both Fiestas. Not the new ones but the last of the old model with a nippy little 1.26 zetec engine. I really like it as its easy to drive (and easy to park!), very nippy and responsive, reliable and they are cheap to repair if anything does go wrong.

My first car was a Fiat 127 really lovely car to drive, had only one problem the handbreak didnt work to well so i had to carry bricks where ever i went, i also had to judge when the car in front was going to break to give mine chance to stop, amazing im still here to tell the tale id say  funny the garage could never understand why it was like that.

Had a few more cars since then but i have now inherited my dads pride and joy, a 1986 vauxhall cavalier CDi, he passed away nearly 5 years ago but i dont have the heart to get rid of it as its been in the family 18 years. Not much bodywork left, and when it rains it pours through the sunroof onto the drivers chair, so i dread the wet weather as half the time it looks like ive wet myself. not very good on petrol as its an 1800 but start first time every time and runs like a dream.

I used to own the mark 1 and mark 2 must say they were the best cars ive ever had, i miss my mark 2 which i owned for 7 years they were both very nippy and cheap to run, plus i had no trouble with leaky sunroofs

So what you on about missy D ?

My first car was an ancient Leyland Mini and I loved her to bits.............before she fell to bits. She was the smallest car I could find - as a new driver I figured that the smaller the car, the less likely I would be to prang it. She was very precious as I had to save up £450 all on my own and pay and maintain her myself...........unlike new drivers nowadays  who seem to have it handed to them on a plate.

I now drive my avatar and I love him to bits too. I bought him because he was such a nice colour and came with a boot light.

My first car was a burgendy Metro, which I loved to pieces and had for two years until spectacularly writing it off when it got a blow-out tyre in the fast lane of the M5. :tears: (Looooong story!!!!)

My current car is a Ford Escort which is really old and not quite as loved but gets me from A to B.

Ok this is going to sound very sad indeed.

My first car was a Fiat Panda, the square kind with the double soft top.
Since then I've had a few cars but I'm now back to a Fiat Panda, this time it's the new version and far speedier than the old.

Passed which test Minnie?

My first car was a Fiat 128 Estate - the original rustbucket.

My present car, is a crappy Vauxhall Astra 1.7 Diesel, which is now on it's 8th cambelt, and has had two complete engine rebuilds following cambelt snaps (so far)!

As an aside, I think I can claim uniqueness when it comes to car owning records. I believe I'm the only person ever to have traded in a Skoda......to buy a Lada! :really:

The most favourite car I've had was my second car...

I went from my 950cc Fiesta to a wopping 2.0 ltr 16v Astra GTE mk2...the one with the LED dash. To coin a phrase, it went like $hit off a shovel! Boy did I love thrashing the life out of that car. It absolutely terrified me!

And to this day I still see it now an again being driven round Dundee by some ned

p.s. Under Par..if you're reading this...at no time did I ever break the speed limit

very nippy and cheap to run... Forgot that too - very economical on the petrol too. My last one had a sun roof (which didn't leak) but this one has air con, CD player, sports dials and alloys. Only been driving a few years so I still get moments when I so appreciate having a car and being to just go where I want, when I want. :waycool:

Yep - mine has 5 doors! Even though there's usually only 2 of us in it - its been a blessing having the 5. And nope - I've never made anyone travel in the boot and never MADE anyone get into the boot either

My first car was a Ford Rangero - a huge American MONSTER! It was bought as a surprise for me by my dad, who owed me some money, and thought he'd give me a car instead of the cash. He also thought his ickle daughter would be 'safer' behind a huge bonnet, than in a wee fiat or similar ickle car. Needless to say, my dad had a 'thing' about American cars, and was a member of an American car club..... So obviously I had to have a big monster car, too.

It looked similar to the car below, but without the thingy sticking out of the bonnet.

Now I have.......... A pair of feet! :D They work very well, and require no MOT, insurance or road tax. I do go through a lot of shoes, though..... And blister plasters.....

:yeah: WOW! is all I can say - lucky Little Monkey!
Mind you, lots of respect to you for using your feet these days - I'm not quite ready to give up my wee car.

Also adding onto what Minnie said about her car's name. Mine's is called Coothy! except I spell it Cuthe. Don't ask, cos I ain't gonna tell you!

But what I want to know is... should there be a secret about what your car (or other vehicle is called)? I ask because my ex had a fantastic motorbike that was his pride and joy and he told me he couldn't tell me its name cos it was unlucky. Anyone agree?

Ummmm...... Well, Little Monkey would have preferred a slightly smaller car at the time - one that didn't cost a fortune in road tax, insurance and that didn't drink petrol like it was about to go out of fashion!!! But I quite enjoyed driving it, particularly long distance....... Put on the cruise control, shades on, music...... The boys hardly believed their eyes when they saw that the car was driven and owned by a little girl!!! :D

But no, DJ, I don't think you'd like my dad to be your dad when you hear the rest of the story: After about 1 1/2 years, I couldn't afford to keep the car (student), so my dad sold it for me again. And kept the money! :tears:

I survived until recently without a car (though I did have a Tomos moped when I was 16, think you used to get them from Grattans catalogue).

First proper car, Rover 214, blew all my savings on it, then the cylinder head went just a month after the warranty expired. Mechanic said the repairs couldn't be guaranteed so after a few weeks of constantly checking the temperature whilst driving traded it in for a brand new Toyota Yaris, had it nearly 2 years and I love it!!! Roomy inside for a wee car, space ship dash and only 10 miles or so over one tank of petrol from Twyford to Perth.

First car was a Fiat 124 sports - bizarre car - not like the boxy 124's at all - in fact I don;t actually know why they used the same model number. Had an outstanding engine and went like the clappers - Unfortunately the clutch was very heavy - in fact so heavy the cable went through the bulkheed with alarming regularity !

Current car is a Passat turbo Sport (chipped) which also goes like stink - but with a cavern for a boot.

still miss my 944 though :tears:

First car was the same as Tiggerbabe's, a Triumph Herald, it was fabulous fun and turned on a sixpence. It was a very boring shade of grey but we had great plans for doing it up, that was before it got squished between two other cars

My worst car by FAR was a Fiat Tipo, I can't tell you how many things went wrong, I used to dread getting into it and I can't think of a single good thing to say on the subject! Oh how I hated that car!

My current car is a Mazda RX8, which I love but isn't very well at the moment, since it aquaplaned, span round twice and collided with the central reservation barrier on the M1 last week! :tears: (not a very nice experience, especially after the initial shock, realising I was stuck, horizontally to the oncoming traffic, on the FAST lane in a severe downpour! I don't know quite how I did it, but I managed to reverse across THREE lanes of motorway, onto the hard shoulder before collapsing into a heap of quivering jelly! )

Hopefully I should have it back again next week! :)

My fiest car was an old green Renault 4 which had 2 canary yellow wing panels.

My current car is a Vauxhall cavalier.

I've never really had a lot of time for cars especially the more sporty types.

Basically cos I cannot get in them.

My first car was a beaten up old mini (red) called 'Charlie' - it was a sweet car but it had an old-fashioned choke and wouldn't start unless the weather conditions were fine and dry .

My current car is a VW Polo (silver) with a slide-back roof :waycool: called 'Ellie'. She's great and just right for nipping about town - but people seem to have developed a habit of colliding with her and costing insurance companies a small fortune to fix (but I refused to write her off because she was a 21st Birthday present).

My parents bought me my first car which was an ancient Renault 5 which was eventually handed down to my sister.

My current car is a Corsa which I loath. I've never bonded with it - it was an emergency buy when the drive shaft fell off my Golf and took the gear box with it :tears: I loved that Golf.

I'm waiting for the day that the GIT that keeps breaking into my Corsa just nicks it and burns it out once and for all.

My first car was a Dyane 6, (that's the larger, "souped up" version of the 2CV). And should I be embarrassed by my current car, a Fiesta? Parking in town is sometimes tricky, and it can get in to very small spaces, here's one from a couple of weeks ago... (The trouble was, I had to ask the neighbour to move her car before I could get out again!)

The first car I drove, was a Morris Minor, when I was 11 (yes it was all legal!) I still have a soft spot for Moggies, and very nearly bought one a few years back. I don't think I've ever had a name for a car though, (except "you b*****d" if it breaks down!)

My first car was a Wolsely 1300, beige, the sporty twin carb version, bought it off an old retired couple, who had no idea I was going to fit air horns to it (dukes of hazzard style) do handbrake turns and learn to slide it round corners and round-abouts.

It could touch 98 mph (windows and doors shaking).
I bought it when I was 16, fitted a loud stereo (cost almost as much as the car  ) - drove it a few times before my 17th birthday [but only when my parents were not around]

Second gear was a challenge, had to "double de clutch" down from third gear, or a big crunch came out of the engine compartment.

After a few "posher cars", bought my current one from new in 2000, an Aussie version of the fiesta, called a festiva. This was because I needed a reliable car to get around the centre of Sydney, to get me from work, to dance classes to teach. At the time I did not know how long I would stay in Aussie, so bought the cheapest new car I could find, $11, 900 (about 4,500 pounds) with air con [a must have in Sydney] and a stereo!! woo hoo.

Still have it coz the thing will not lie down and die!!!
I get tempted to "upgrade" now and again, (mmm cruise control, auto and GPS  )
Thing is, I do not have to worry where I park it, or be concerned about what dents it gets in car parks, and it always starts...

My first car was a motorbike a Suzuki 100, I had bigger and bigger bikes for 8 years (falling off every year in the ice) before giving in and getting a car.

My first car was a Fiesta 1.1 , very boring.

My current car is a Ford Focus CMAX TDi 2.0 . It goes faster than the petrol equivalent. But while it's doing that - it does 25 mpg or worse  . So I don't drive it like that anymore.

You can watch DVDs in the back of it, but conversation to and from dance venues has always been far too riveting for any passenger to be tempted.

So far....

Your first car. You always buy something inexpensive, economical on petrol and cheap to insure.

No.

Peugeot 505 STi 2.5 litre. A fuel injected arm-chair with electric everything. Green metallic paint. Very "french" gear-stick movement - a kind of "semi-circle, pull-back" to get into reverse. Only problem - anything went wrong with it and you lifted the bonnet it made a coughing sound that sounded like "200 quid".

Sold it to a strange chap who paid me cash out of a Tesco bag that I guess contained 15 grand.

Then I bought a MG Metro which rusted while you looked at it.

I now drive a 10-year-old Astra that wants to be a Morris Minor when it grows up.

One of my aims in life is to live without a car (hate them, hate them - unreliable, polluting, oil-dependency). Tried living without a car for 6 months but ended up borrowing or hiring every couple of weeks.
