Hello!

We (myself and a friend) are travelling to New Zealand (and/or possibly Australia) this January and have yet to plan where to go... I would love to find a couple of decent Ceroc/MJ venues on my travels - can anyone point us in the right direction?

I suggest you PM him unless he comes on line this evening to answer you

Biggest MJ area is no doubt Auckland.

The Ceroc NZ web page also has a listing of events, which you may want to have a look at.

http://www.ceroc.co.nz/events.html

The list currently ends in December but in due course will be populated with relevant info.

Auckland
----------
If it is on then check out Ceroc South and East Auckland. This may be the best compromise in Auckland for good level of dancers and nice atmosphere.

Lorne Street (central Auckland) is certainly worth a look, and if it is just to have seen it ;)

Should you also dance Salsa then check out Wildfire Restaurant at Princess Wharf. They have a live band every Saturday night and entry is free.

The bst NZ Salsa band is Kantuta and these guys really are great! Http://www.kantuta.co.nz

A lot of Jivers tend to go to Sky City, the casino. They have live bands every weekend and the drinks are cheap.

Tauranga
----------
Tauranga has a nice studio as well and beautiful surroundings. The level of dancing may be higher than on average in the other areas due to an ambitious franchise holder.

Hamilton
----------
Hamilton is worth a look for male dancers because they have the most promising two female dancers that NZ has to offer. No, they are not ready to be married yet, too young, right Anna? :na:

Hamilton's dancers meet at the RSA's (Workingmen's and Cosmopolitan Club), which have live music every Saturday.

The casino in Hamilton has good gigs on every now and again. Same website as Auckland casino.

Rotorua
--------
Very friendly franchise but perhaps a bit deprived of great dance venues. Though, there are a number of good clubs around.

Taupo
------
Young franchise that I know nothing about.

New Plymouth (Taranaki)
----------------------------
Dance-wise very influenced by Hamilton style, which means it's gonna be bouncy. They appear to have good parties, though.

Palmerston North
--------------------
Off-spring of Plymouth and I have no idea what it is like.

Wellington
------------
I am sure Adam will soon give us more info about it. My guess is that it is a very friendly, non-competitive environment with a city that has a great variety of venues. Even Salsa isn't too far away from the Ceroc venue, just a couple of hundred metres up the street.

Christchurch
--------------
This has also recently been taken over by somebody from the UK so it may have improved, which is very much desired.

Queenstown
--------------
I have heard they have good parties. But there will be only few places where you can dance.

Dunedin
---------
Don't know anything about it but can imagine it attracts a lot of students because there isn't a lot else :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know much about OZ. In Melbourne the scene as far as freestyling in clubs goes does not be developed all that well. We went to the casino a couple of times but the music is usually too monotonous and simple. There is a great Arg. Tango teacher there and also a fabulous Street Samba teacher.

My dance stay in Sydney is some 5 or so years ago so would not know any recent info. Back then the only time we met other dancers for freestyling was at an RSA.

I'd echo the advice to check out www.cerocforum.com Free to join, lots of Aussie/NZ members (but UK folks very welcome). You'll be able to get advice on where to dance in various cities, what else to do, and probably have some friends waiting for you when you get there.

A quick answer for your question, though, might be that the Australian scene is strongest in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with Perth and Adelaide catching up. I'd really advise you to check out the Great Barrier Reef while you're nearby (north Queensland), but there's not much (any) ceroc to be had around there.

An update on Andreas Account of NZ ceroc and other dance venues :

CEROC

Lorne St, Auckland - Ceroc HQ

floor been redone, lots of people, greater quantity of good dancers, best selection of music i've come across so far (courtesy of nick sissons  ), in my opinion, best in the upper north island

Counties Manukau - still kind of Auckland

cool dance parties, more nick sissons music and big venue, all the aucklanders come to it

Hamilton

i could be shot for saying this but the last party i went to there was brutal. I was very very disappointed. music was uninviting and people were bopping madly everyone.. not impressed

Tauranga

no one turned up to the last dance party i went to there and the venue owner stayed for even less time than we did.. myself i wouldnt bother. go ahead, discommunicate me Tga ceroc junkies but the truth must be known!

Rotorua

still lacking numbers, nice music and a beautiful floor but i dont know if its worth the trip anymore unless ur byo dance partner

Wellington

well its adam and mandy's so it should be great - will let u know further after the weekender down there thats in october

and the south island i know absolutely nothing about.

SALSA

Every wednesday night the salsa band 'Banda Latina' play at the kingslander on the main rd though kingsland (auckland) from about 11

Every thursdaynight Kantuta play a bar in newmarket (also auckland) which i cant remember the name of

Every Friday night theres a latin dj at the Mexican Cafe in central auckland (just down from the skytower)

and every Saturday night from 11:30, various bands play at wildfire. the floor at wildfire is well.. lacking.. but im still a fan

oh.. and on the first sunday of every month, Kantuta play at Skycity

No, they are not ready to be married yet, too young, right Anna? thats right ;) ..

Salsa Auckland
-----------------
There is still Guada worth mentioning on a Thursday night in Manukau. Floor is stone tiles but they du have Kantuta regularly. So that is Manukau, not Newmarket ;)

Well things are hot in Wellington. We now average 120 both wednesday and thursday nights, which I think are both the biggest classes now in NZ :waycool:

We have beginners, Intermediate and advanced both nights. Wednesday is advanced moves and thursday advanced style and technique.

We also run both beginners and intermediate review classes.

The music is very UK it was very stuck in the 80's here.

We have a great venue and really hope you can make it. If you can come a couple of weeks earlier, we may even be able to pay towards your flight, but there is a catch, bring my 9 year old daughter with you
