Well, I'm hoping not all the team cabaret places are filled.

And that KatieR and myself can find some willing men soon. We're working out our choreography this weekend but we need some partners!

Any volunteers from the London Forumites? :flower: It's going to be a very fun cabaret. Silliness as well as technical excellence, we hope.

Might need someone with Double Trouble experience, too...

My grandparents should really have been more considerate in January 1945 - Dad's 60th that day, so I won't be exercising the judging panels' minds...or their laughing muscles more like

I would love to come and compete in Scotland, but the logistics seem insurmountable (Im from Brighton and my partner is from the Basque Country (N. Spain is the answer to your question) and we have given up comps (she tells me).
However I should come cos I was christened Ian.
Could we get a lift from the airport?

Who's thinking of doing the Lucky Dip?

I'm in two minds. On the one hand I reckon it could be fun. On the other, I'm concerned I'll ruin some poor girl's day as I don't think my standard of dancing is ... let's say ... competitive.

You sure it's not in your envelope? It's a small (credit card sized) blue ticket.

If not then you need to pm/phone/e-mail Scot as you need it to get into the Friday night party.

GO FOR IT DUCASI! The Lucky Dip is fun! Bigtime fun! I've done a few, and I've enjoyed every single one - favourite memory of the lucky dip at the moment is seeing SASSY 1 and her partner having such a great time at the London Ceroc Champs this May  :D

If so you could enter the categories you want and decide about Friday later.

I tend not to take them too seriously - just go in and have fun. You may end up with someone who's better than you, but that's the nature of the competition and I don't think anyone would mind too much.

And of course by paying to enter the competition, your entry fee helps to support a good cause.

I'm going in for the Lucky Dip, so watch out JoC and Piglet (and any other lady lucky dippers) – you never know your luck!

Haven't decided on the Friday yet... Really depends on how I'm going to get there and back, and whether I want to stay overnight Friday and Saturday. From a wee look at a map the venue is a bit of a walk from the nearest train station and the favoured hotel.

Who's going from Glasgow and wants some company in their car? :flower:

For those wanting to enter a Showcase we now have 3 possibly 4 entries.

Since this was not advertised it is free to enter and the prizes will be the same as for the open. If you are intrested PM, Email or Email me for my Phone No. and let me know.

Its for Charity what you got to lose

I have a question for you lovely Scottish peeps from the Wurzelrocks. He is thinking of coming up from Cornwall and would like to know:

a) How far from Edinburgh Airport to the Travel Lodge in Musselbrough

b) How far from the Travel Lodge to the venue?

c) Does anyone have an idea of how much a taxi will cost for a) and b).

Many thanks

Elaine (from Bristol - not quite as far as Cornwall! :D )

The answer to your question is that there is a good bus from the airport to Edinburgh train station where you can get a train from there to Musselburgh. Not quite sure of cost but think it would be alot cheaper than a taxi. (that's for sure)
The travel lodge is about five/ten mins drive but I am sure there will be lots of other peolpe around to share lifts etc.
I would like less than a fiver!
Hope that helps

Just to say we have some guest DJ's playing first up will be Dance Demon, second Tiggerbabe or the Mighty Tiggerbabe as I have seen her referred to.

Most people should have recieved their tickets if not please contact. If you have not sent your app in yet I would greatly appreciate if you could do so sooner rather than later. It makes my life easier. You can download an application from www.cerocscotland.com or if you happen to be in Edinburgh you can hand it into the Venue Manager either on a Mon, Tue, Thurs, or Saturday Party.

Question:
Any chance the forumites will be wearing badges ? It would be great for us first timers to Scotland to put a face the name.

Couldnt agree more. When Minnie made some for us all at MJC it worked really well.
At least if we were wearing a little something there would be no chance of escape  :nice:

I do not know if someone is organising this but if they are they can leave the badges at the desk to pick up.

BRILLIANT COMPETITION
- we all had a fabulous time.

Friday night party was great - brilliant pre-comp atmosphere - in fact, no-one wanted to go home and Scot had to let us have one last dance

Huge  to Scot, Angela and Fran - the hall looked FAB on Saturday!!!

Loads of freestyle - loads of fantastic dances  - and I only bought one t-shirt and only ordered one new pair of shoes

Couple of fun competitions during the day too, which was a great idea - The Scottish Challenge - first one involved the ladies leading and the guys following and the second one had the ladies blindfolded :D

Many congrats to the Bristol Crew for winning the Showcase, the Advanced and the Intermediate comps.

Dundee managed to retain the Lucky Dip title though with Sam and Denise.

And then Denise and Phil won the Open.

The Abba Cabaret was brill!

Betty and his two minders, in the double trouble were awesome - how does he manage to dance in those heels
And well done Cruella and Little Em, we had a right laugh as an incredibly late entry into the Double Trouble Competition :D
Lindsay, Karen and Yvonne, from Aberdeen, won the title.

Everything kept well on time and Obi had all the results posted up quickly too.

Bill was a total star, giving massages during the day, and all for charity.

I think the total raised on the day was £6000 but Scot's going to post the final count later on.

Some incredible outfits on view but my fav had to be Piglet's dress - WOW!

Everyone danced their sox off after the presentations!

And not that I'm at all biased - but if you can only go to one competition next year - make it the Scottish one  :D

I had a really great time, despite feelings of inadequacy and indigestion which stopped me dancing as much as I otherwise would have. I enjoyed every dance I had, despite giving a bit of a "damp squib" performance, rather than the "on fire" one I'd liked to have given. Thanks for putting up with me. :flower:

I'll post some more thoughts up on my blog later once I've figured out what they are. (Got loads of pics too, but I'm very sure they'll all be blurred ... watch this space...)

Just like to say congratulations to all the winners, in fact, to all the competitors. They were all magnificent. (Well, apart from one guy in the Lucky Dip. :tears: )

I was really proud of some of our local talent who were competing for the first time and I thought were pretty damn good. I understand Blackpool isn't so far away...

Was good to meet some of the forumites there... Hope to see you again next year, if not sooner.

Big thanks to all the ladies who looked after me. Driving me, nursing me, comforting me, accommodating me, and just generally looking out for me.

Can only echo what's already been said. Well done to all those successful on the day, you all danced very well indeed.

Have to mention though some particular people who danced fantastically IMO that'll be worth a watch for the future....

Jamie & Danielle...(have a soft spot for these two as they've worked hard in preperation and it showed...watch out Blackpool)

Gail & Simon...Gail your dancing has gone from strength to strength recently and what with looking great aswell...you have my utmost respect.

John & Heather..great dancing, so musical and a pleasure to watch ...

and finally (and apologies for those I can't recall in my current cream crackered state)...

Melanie & Burge. Melanie's first competition and so why not enter the open! Thought you both did fantastically well. Was really impressed and fully expect to see you competing together in Blackpool...(that wasn't a request by the way  ). P.s. Great legs!...and No Burge, not yours

As I said can't remember every great moment as there is undoubtedly too many to think off.

I couldn't take my eyes off SimonR and Nicole, guys you were awesome. :worthy:
Agreed, especially that bit where Nicole walked right over the top of him :D - wonder if he teaches that move in class?
Keith and Victoria were amazing too - and Janey should have got a prize for managing to look so gorgeous

One of my fav moments was dancing with Tony (C2D) and the look on his face when he put me into a spin and my skirt knocked out about 6 couples in our immediate vicinity

Great to meet new forumites, especially Killingtime  - Melanie the badges were awesome!

Hi guys,
Just got home, absolutely shattered, but what a weekend! Well worth all the travel. As I say every year, you guys are an amazing crowd, so friendly, excellent dancers & an abundance of energy.
I'd like thank everyone for their support, it helps all dancers when you hear a cheer for something you've done & it felt like we were in front of a home crowd, and I'm sure all the other competitors felt the same way.
Great music, great organisation, with fantastic support staff.
From myself, Janey my wife & love of my life, and Victoria, my fantastic dance partner & seamstress (Making not only my shirt, but also her fab elf like dress), a huge thank you.
A quick apology to a couple of ladies I promised dances to & unfortunately didn't manage to get back to! Nothing deliberate, unfortunately the night was too short & or couldn't find you, sorry.
Looking forward to seeing you at Southport, much more time to cram those dances in. I'll be the one leaving the blues room around 7.30 am, see you there!
Finally a huge well done to all the dancers, for braving a competition, never easy on the nerves, whether it’s your 1st or 20th! Congratulations to all the finalists & especially all the winners.

Rats Keith, you got there before me!!!

I can only echo what Keith has said, especially the crowd - you Guys were amazing and Simon and I really felt on Cloud 9 when you welcomed us for our Showcase!!!!

Would like to say to Ceroc Scotland that the event was absolutely brilliant! Well run, outstanding music for the competition rounds (and in between!) and to do it all for the Barnardos charity - you deserve medals!!!

Well done to all the competitors, as ever, the standard of dancing in the competition was amazing! :worthy:

PS - nearly forgot - the Judges!!!! How you manage to keep smiling all the way throught the rounds I just don't know, but it makes it much easier to perform!!

!!! AMAZING !!!

Thats the best way I can think of summing it up.

Its official, I now want to move to Scotland.

For me it was my first time to Scotland. I found the friendliness and warmth of all those I came into contact with, both within the event and outside, to be so welcoming. This is a common response from people visiting Scotland from what I can tell. I can see why

The event itself was absolutely brilliant in every way. The highlight for me, apart from the fantastic dancing (and I mean fantastic) was the music.

I have been to freestyles before and enjoyed a great night of music but, for those of you who didnt manage to make it, I can promise you that this weekend was a truly breathtaking weekend of music. The mixture of tracks that were played just enticed you onto the floor one after another. So for those that were responsible for choosing (i think it was Scot, DD and Sheena)......

:worthy: :worthy: :worthy:

You have set a benchmark in my eyes.

I mentioned to a girl I was dancing with that I thought the music was possibly the best mix I have ever heard and she responded with ..
"you dont dance much in Edinburgh do you"
I said no and asked why. She told me that they get this quality of music all the time there :tears: :tears: :tears:
I want to move to Scotland :tears:

The competition was fab. A huge congrats to all those winners and those taking part. And of course my hat goes off to the organisers for ensuring things went........wait for it.......

To the minute in accordance with the timetable

Something to be proud of.

All together - awesome dancers, quality competitions, brilliant venue with a floor to die for, plenty of freestyle, free water, cheap bar, welcoming atmosphere, heavenly music and great facilities for the competitors (from what I hear).

I was a bit hesitant about being able to make the BFG due to commitments elsewhere but after experiencing this weekend there is nothing that can stop me revisiting north of the border.

Thankyou all once again for a weekend to remember.

It was a great competition :). Congratulations to all the winners. Thanks to Scot and Angela for letting Niamh and Honor visit, they were no trobule, and enjoyed the music.

The showcases were great, I don't know why Elaine and Simon were so nervous with such a well structured and funny routine. Nice one :)
Lindsay and Brady were hilarious - will anyone else use Crazy Frog as music to dance to in a competition ?

As for me...er...I was so unsure about entering the Open, I felt it was way out of my league..which it is...but i have now recovered from falling over and the video footage doesnt look anywhere near as bad as i thought it would . Still, I'll watch Melanie dancing from the crowd in future ;)

Hello all! I dont really come on here much any more but I would just like to offer a few thanks to people! Also to say my honest opinion on the competition this weekend!

My biggest thank you goes to Melanie - my open dance partner! It was Melanies first shot at a Ceroc competition and to do so well at that level is a credit to herself! She looked so fabulous and im proud to say that i enjoyed our dances so much! Thank you for making my shirt as well that i wore on the day! Was all just brilliant! Thank you for putting in so much effort for me and i am proud of what you have achieved in such a short space of time...i look forward to more practice in the future with you.

Would just like to say a big thank you to all of the support that we received off everyone, especially Pauline (thank you for my trousers!), Melanie and James, Lisa, Denise, Lorna and Brian.

Denise and Phil, Keith and Victoria in the open were fab, John and Hazel looked brilliant in the advanced and so did Danielle and Jamie in the intermediate! Well done!

Great showcases, unfortunately there can only be one winner but you all did so so well!

Well done Scott and Angela for making such an event go so successful. Well done to all of the judges for giving up their time and making the event possible also.

However, It would be nice next year if the scottish teachers be allowed to dance in the open, it was such a shame that they were unable to dance in their own back yard and im sure would have made for an even greater spectacle and event this year. The way forward for Scotland is seeing their own teachers compete against each other, alongside their demos. That would make fantastic atmosphere and create a sense of pride and a healthy competition within the scottish ranks at having all of the people who teach a chance to show what they can do instead of waiting once a year at Blackpool. Just a thought but maybe if they wont be allowed next year in the open then make a special one off final for a teachers event against each other to give the occasion some extra punch! Just a thought but it would be great!

Well done to all of you who competed!

Steven

Also huge thank's to my amazing and lovely partner for your support and for putting up with me and my nerves :flower:
Lovely to watch the Double Trouble girls and thought all the showcases were superb too and the audience for creating a great athmosphere all day long.
Certainly a day to remember and all in aid of charity :worthy: :)

Hi guys,

what a great weekend. I had a great time. Well done to Scot and his team. Just gets better every year.

Had great dances with everyone. Thank you.
Just one that I'd like to mention in particular and that was my dance with Victor to 'Zoot Suit Riot'. (not sure of spelling and too tired to find out). Oh my god!!! Fast but amazing. Thank you. I believe that Gus managed to get it on video. Would love to see this if possible.

Bit disappointed I didn't get a dance with Simon R. I was looking for you at the party on Sat but couldn't find you. Hopefully next time.

Really enjoyed judging. Thought you all were fab and found it quite difficult this year. Standard was amazing. Well done everyone.

Just one more mention for 'my boys'. (Steve and Brian). You both did yourselves proud. Thank you for the lovely dances. :flower:

Can't wait for next year.

Firstly, I want to thank my partner for taking me through the day with such an amazing smile.

Secondly, to Scot and the team: so many things already said, but just to add my personal thanks and congratulations.

Honor would like to thank you for allowing her in to the foyer and for meeting Niamh and all you lovely people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (thanx Nik for pix!!)

Some truly amazing and inspirational dancing. Am looking forward to seeing pics...

Now i've got some time to myself, i'd like to add my tuppence worth.

Firstly i'd like to thank my partner Nik. aka, Dreadful Scathe. We had a great dance and i know he felt terrible afterwards, but it wasn't all bad. Although all the comotion (sp?) with the music didn't help. No warm up and a dodgy intro to our first track was a bit unerving  Anyhoo...... I had a great time and thank you for putting up with me and wearing pink

I thought the level was really high this year....the highest i've seen in Scotland, and i sure wouldn't want to be judging. All categories were tough and i think that it will be like this year after year. It has proved to be one of the most popular competitions and more and more people are heading north for it. Long may it continue.

List of big ups.....

Steve and Melanie...i didn't get a chance to see you in action, but i've seen a little footage and it looked fab. The outfits were stunning and of course.....the legs....

Jamie & Danielle....watch out for these guys in Blackpool. They are a great young couple and did really well. They will go from strength to strength in the run up to March. :worthy:

Brady & Lindsay...Frogs?.....I bet that was Lindsay's idea  Brilliant!!!

Keith & Victoria ...weren't they absolutely astounding!!?!?! I couldn't take my eyes off them

Denise & Phil... I thought you guys looked beautiful. It was great to see Denise back dancing and it was great to have Phil up to Scotland again. You were both stunning :flower:

I think DD & Heather were unfortunate not to get in the final, they danced lovely, and i thought David and Jamie were kicking a$$ to their fast track.

So many great things happening and it was all down to a very hard working team.....Many thanks to Scot, Angela, Fran, Obi, and everyone else who was mucking in. Party organiser extraodinaires

Well done to everyone who was competing , hope to see you all again next year!

Was really chuffed that our Aberden girls wone the DT - well done girls

Thought John and Heather weree dead certs for a place in the final - you looked absolutely terrific and thought you really deserved to be in the final

Would have loved to have had more dances - but isn't that always the case.Congratulations to everyone and huge thanks to so many folk coming up from down south. Hope you all make it back next year. :D

Hello Scotland.

It was a real privilege to judge you guys on Saturday. The standard was even higher than before and the in between dances I had were fabulous.

Thanks for having us - we are already looking forward to next year.

And if you aren't committed to Franck's BFG on Sat 22 October how about a trip to Newcastle to help us celebrate 10 years of Ceroc here?! (Shameless plug - will I get away with it??)

we thought so too Bill....but the judges would have had to come round to our side of the hall to see what you saw.....and none of them did
however quite a few people shared your views, including a few well experienced competition dancers.....which helped temper our dissappointment.
Anyway, big thanks &   to Heather for being a fab partner. Also to JoC for a couple of nice dances in the DWAS......and....

Firstly, full marks to Scot and his team for putting together the event. As has been said, the facts that (a) it ran to time and (b) the results were posted so quickly, are tributes to the professionalism of those involved. And the fact that everyone involved gave of their time for free is praiseworthy.

I think that was true and it would be a pity if the trend were to develop where only those who fancy their chances of winning a competition (or at least reaching the final) actually enter. Personally I've no illusions about winning and my entry fee was a more-or-less straight donation to charity! I enter on the same basis as Brechin City compete in the Scottish Cup - no chance of eventual victory (apologies to my LD and Int partners Avril and Fee!) but it's good to take part for a good cause.

But many dancers have reached a plateau where we know we won't significantly improve and being consistently eliminated in the first round can be hard to take, particularly as the general standard at "intermediate" level is constantly improving (and the winners are inevitably younger!). Money can be short and maybe there could be an incentive for those who know they're likely to go out of a competition early, similar to the repechage in rowing or a Plate competition for 1st round exits (I think these ideas have been discussed before on the Forum, time available being the main drawback).

I suppose though that it is a COMPETITION, which means that the winners will always be outnumbered by the non-winners - and in our politically correct times no-one wants to be a loser!

For one, the venue was quite warm and could have benefited from some fans.
I agree the hall was very hot to begin with and would have benefited from some better air-conditioning and/or fans. That is definitely something to consider for next year.

........ probably the most controversial point is regarding judging.
So - nothing new there! At every competition where there is subjective judging, from a village fete cake stall to the Olympic gymnastics, there will be some judging decisions that are controversial, no matter how good the training. Even where decisions should be based on objective facts (did the ball cross the line, was the batsman run out, etc) technology can show that human beings sometimes get it wrong.

When you enter a dance competition you have a right to expect that the judges have a degree of competence in their task, that they will judge impartially and to the best of their ability, but not that they will always reach the same conclusions as each other or as the competitors or as the audience. And sometimes if the floor is full, a couple can just be lucky or unlucky depending if the judge sees their mistake or their stylish move.

I don't know the exact way the individual judges' scores were moderated to ensure the marking was as fair as possible, and I do think perhaps they could have moved around the floor and/or taken notes a bit more while judging. But if it hadn't been for those prepared to carry out the thankless and unpaid (on Saturday at least) task, there would have been no competition at all, so credit to those who did it.

I'm sure Scot and his team will listen to comments, criticisms etc and take them into account for future events.

But it would be unfortunate if they were to get the impression that lots of people went away from the event unhappy or dissatisfied. Every single person I have spoken to since the weekend said that they enjoyed the day and that the event was well run - I'm not claiming any statistical validity for my survey, but it convinces me that Scot & co are doing something right.

Personally I don't want the Scottish event to be just a pale imitation of the Blackpool or London Championships - it has developed a character of its own and a unique element of being run on an entirely voluntary basis as a fundraising event for charity. (No use saying we could all have just written cheques and not bothered holding the event - the fact is that we wouldn't have done so, and in 3 years about £20 000 has been raised that wouldnt otherwise have been - fantastic achievement! ) AND it's the best event I have attended for keeping strictly to the timetable, no minor achievement in itself!

And (again, personally) I don't want to see MJ go down the ballroom dancing route of being shoe-horned into a specific and regimented style which will win prizes, if it loses its accessibility to the majority of "non-championship-class" dancers. The strength of MJ is its ability and willingness to absorb other dance styles and still stay under the MJ umbrella: the weakness is that this makes judging between completely different styles more subjective (shown to its extreme on Saturday in the Showcase and Open Finals)

By all means get the best judges available, give them some training, publish the criteria they will work to, etc. But please don't think it will end controversy over decisions - it won't.

Huh! By the time I had composed and submitted the above reply, all the messages about judging had been hived off to another thread!

B***y moderators - worse than judges!

Mods - Could you please delete the previous message so that this thread is kept clear of "judging" comments - I've dragged it into the "judging" thread myself. Ta.
