The ball at coventry i believe is the weekend before, so no reason why you can't do both! Daventry is definately not to be missed, with about 400 dancers you are going to get all levels of dancer there. Emma Petitt always makes it a fun evening with a dirty dancing comp and a couple of cabarets plus plenty of freestyle time as it doesn't finish until 2am.

Surely I can't be the only one who saw this thread and thought "Oh no, not another discussion about UCP dancing"? :innocent:

(I know, don't call me... etc.)

Was there a previous thread about this event last time, giving, you know, details? For those of us who don't actually know what this event is?

There was a previous thread under the same name for last years event, sorry didn't realise. The venue is still the same Daventry Sports Centre (holds about 400/500 people) 9th July 8pm till 2am there are workshops on during the day but i'm afraid i don't know the details. If you want to know more then you are best contacting Emma Petitt on 01327 311137 or 07734 910343 email emma@ceroccentral.com :flower:

Well, that's more information than I can see on the ceroccentral web site - once again, the Forum is The Only Source of Reliable Information About Upcoming Events.

(And, of course, also the Best Source Of Unsubstantiated Gossip About Past Events - what more could you want?)

Seriously though, why is there nothing about this on the site? Have all the tickets been sold or what? I mean, this is a Big Event, planned for months in advance, a little note somewhere prominent in the website may be useful...?

Yes this is a very popular event but you can still get tickets on the door for the sum of 10 pounds.

I am hoping to go, but haven't sorted it all out yet - but as you said Cruella, I can always get a ticket on the door if I don't get organised in time.

I'd quite like to do the workshops really, but I don't know if I'm too late for that, and also don't know if they're likely to be fairly even numbers or over-run with women!

Anyone any information about this?

I too am gutted it clashes with Twyford, this happened at the last big Daventry dance. (Must make note to get Emma and Bill & Bex to talk to each other in future about dates!!) But Twyford is on every month and i am going to the next one in august to see Ray and Jayne off :tears: There is only 2 or 3 big Daventry freestyles a year and the room is about 3 times as big so more floorspace and dancers.

I found a flyer picked up from Wellingborough.

Dirty dancing workshops 11am to 5 pm, including blues by Roy Asagaba Power, plus a Salsa "teaser". Guest teachers also include include Val Forsey and David Rockov.

Night is 8pm to 2am, theme "Dirty dancing", with "flirty" class & cabaret & DD competition. colors pink/white/black, DJ Roy Ambridge

OK, that's where they say "I could teach you salsa, but I'n not going to, nerr nerr", yes?

Howcum no-one ever invites known salsa teachers (I may be wrong here, feel free to shoot me down if so) to these events? I know dozens (well, a few) top-class salsa teachers in North London alone, but AFAIK none have been asked to teach at an MJ event...

I don't think MJ is the right place to learn salsa as IMO salsa dancing goes with salsa music and needs many hours for the salsa footwork, beat and different leads to sink in. That's not going to happen to hundreds of people in a one hour or so class. Learning salsa takes application and discipline. Plus I'm sure Phil Roberts doesn't want to lose his Ceroc customers to the local salsa bars either :what: .

I'm sure Roy Asagaba Power, do a grand job of teaching basic salsa or even 'teasing' if that's what is required.... :what: He is a fine salsa dancer . I had several real salsa dances with him at Southport and I felt his salsa was even better than his jive. :worthy:

Sadly mine wasn't  . But he was so nice he didn't seem to mind :flower: .

I agree salsa has a learning curve, but one could make exactly those arguments for, well, any non-MJ dance style. Certainly there's an even steeper learning curve for Ballroom / Latin, and nosequins is (I think) still doing OK on those fronts.

Although trying to teach Argentinian Tango to an MJ crowd would, I suspect, be a significant challenge... :)

Its on until 2! I will be there.
I really dont mind driving long distances to get to freestyles just so long as they go on long enough. Some venues advertise big summer balls or christmas parties etc. and they only go on until 12! Then they have cabarets in the middle of it. Ok, i guess thats good if you like cabarets
Its ashame for those that want to go but have to drive a long way.

This sounds good though. I went to the last one (emma's teaching anniversary) and thought it was well worth the effort. It certainly is a big venue

I'm sure it will be a great night but I am dismayed to see so many things breaking up the freestyle, each one highly likely to over-run. :tears:

Fortunately Emma is the most punctual ceroc teacher I have ever known. If anyone can keep to time she can :worthy:

I am very curious about the mystery blues DJ....do we get a clue?

Does he use a laptop or CDs?
Will he have a pre-prepared playlist?
Can he dance?
Will he dance?

Im sure it will be a storming success as a night as plenty of people love cabarets, competitions etc.
The only reason I am annoyed is a purely personal one. I want to make the drive down there to dance with as many people as possible that I dont usually get to dance with.
With such a huge reduction in freestyling time it makes it less of an incentive.

Yes I agree there is much less time to dance with everyone. :tears: (please don't miss me out :flower: ). I add up hours freestyling against hours driving and there needs to be more hours freestyling.

Another drawback is this....I find I can hardly walk after sitting on the floor watching the cabaret etc  ... so I will need to re-warm up four times over the course of the evening! Not getting any younger you know  .

Excellent! Midnight it is then (if we don't end up meeting before) - mind you I hope there's something I can dance to with you all, I'm not very good at dirty dancing with girls! I do like the slow swing/blues stuff though so I hope they play some of that!

Rebecca - glad you got yourself sorted mate - are you going to be there all day or just to the evening? See you tonight if you're around (I will be, as I'm taxiing).

All day and all of the night!!!! Missed last night, sorry, being wined and dined

That's good, glad you go a ticket. I presumed the delights of Northampton had lured you away from Peterborough ;) . I might not go dancing on Thursday, as I had my shoulder yanked last night (as well as being elbowed in the temple and kicked on the shin by DJ!!! ), it'd be better to be fully recovered for Saturday. How many times have I said that though!

See you Saturday Becks, really looking forward to it!

The workshops in the day are ticket only. The evening event is pay-on-the-door, unless you have purchased an all-day ticket (£25). The classes look good so I've opted for the all-day option myself. Will be good to meet you (if I haven't already)

Check out the website :

http://www.ceroccentral.com

It says pay on the door on the home page, and there is good info for directions etc.

The venue is very large, 3 basketball courts big ISTR. I would recommend taking a choice of shoes, including your slippiest ones.

See you all there at the midnight rendezvous, I will be wearing black and white (stripes perhaps? ). I'm reserving judgement on the pink.

Managed to trip the light fantastic in Wellingborough tonight...(.got out at long last!! )
and had some fab spins round the floor...did a few bluesy numers as a likkle taster in the run up to Saturday night and it bought all memories flooding back of Southport.
A luverly gentleman there gave me some feedback on my dancing...bless!
He said he could tell I had danced before and asked if I had done some of "them intermediate classes". When I said I had done "a few" he told me he could tell and that they were working....
Anyway girls, huggle round. Might wear a frock. ..it's only a might!
Will go shopping for rummage proof big knickers that could also double up as a handbag and might get some new lippie!

Well I had a fantastic night, Best Dirty Dancing night so far for me :D Thank you to everyone who danced with me ...no names

Hight points:

- Marc Forster's set. :flower: AND discovering that the mystery blues DJ was Marc Forster. :worthy:  Everyone I spoke to loved the blues set. The fact that well over 100 people were still dancing at 1.30AM despite some of them having a 2 hour drive to get home says it all :really: . Well done Marc  MORE PLEASE!

- The music in general was varied , something for everyone. Plus I didn't hear any tracks from the film, hoorah.

- The mini bar in the forumite meeting area was a great idea, saving the massive hike to the main bar.

- Non cliqueyness. Everyone seemed to be dancing with everyone last night. The Forumites were so well dispersed in the crowd it was tricky to see people to make introductions. I was delighted to meet Lucy Locket at last, and introduce myself to the reality of Fletch. I did point Rebecca in the direction of Paul F.... eventually  .

- Dancing with our mystery Aussie guest....shhhh

Low points:

- I thought the Dirty Dancing competition was a waste of time this time, very undersubscribed , only 10 or so couples went in for it out of several hundred people in the room. I think that says something  . Choice of music for Dirty Dancing comp was a bit odd IMO.

- The Cabaret slot was too long IMO and behind schedule, it was on at midnight.

All in all a fab night. Big well done Emma Pettitt and Co. :worthy:

Nice to meet you ZW & some of the others.
Fletch we didn't meet & you wanted to ask me something PM me with your question!!
DavidJames you owe me a dance methinks. Didn't actually get to know names till the end of the evening, but it's nice to put some faces & names together now.
Northants Girly, I could have given you a lift home & Angelique need not have gone out of her way, but didn't think about it till i was halfway home, sorry  Brain was not working!

I can understand why Emma put some rules in place to keep it cleaner but it seemed excessively sanitised - not nearly raunchy enough now. I agree about the music, I loved the second track but I don't think it brought out the best in the dancers.

All in all a fab night. Big well done Emma Pettitt and Co. :worthy:

:yeah: I had a lovely time as well, especially the last hour, even though I was very tired.
I thought the atmosphere was strangely lacking during the cabaret/competition. The compere was desperately trying to get a response out of the crowd without much success. Is that because they really just wanted to get on with the freestyle, or because numbers seemed a bit lower than might have been expected? I was glad because there was space to dance properly all evening.

Well i ache all over, arrived at 8.30 and danced solidly till 2 excepting the breaks for comp/cabarets. Had such a good night. Lovely to meet Paul F, thanks Paul for the great dances it was a pleasure. I think that maybe the music for the competitions was a deliberate attempt to stop the raunchy/pornographic dancing of last year. But did seem extremely tame in comparison. Emma/Paul and Alex were so funny in the doubles routine, fantastic bit of entertainment.
Thanks ZW for the hugging lesson!!!

I enjoyed the night, glad I ventured Out Of The Old Smoke.

High points:
- Managing to get several dances with both Miss Conduct and ZW, who unaccountably weren't solidly booked up all evening. :what:
- Being outed to a few forumites and forumettas :flower:
- Half-mezze and chips in a restaurant on the way back, yum - at 3am...
- Good company there and back
- Lovely dance floor, and pretty good music I thought. Although, having said that: "In these shoes"? - Kirsty MacColl, she's the only real version, never ever plan that male version...

Lowlights:
- Having to rush to re-park my car after being told the filth were booking people...
- When dancing with DianaS, being gratuitously splashed by a drink from some clever woman who thought walking through the middle of a dance floor with a full glass (fortunately only water) was a Clever Move
- Managing, half-way through a lovely fast dance, to tap my arm with surgical, nay laser-like precision on the Nose Nerve of my partner, causing her to need to sit down for a rest

DavidJames you owe me a dance methinks.
Errr, possibly... ?

I had a fab night! When I eventually got there (I had a few 'how to put this?' 'tense moments' before I came out :what: ..note to self, NEVER EAT DRIED APRICOTS AGAIN  )

I thought the numbers were perfect, enough to make an atmosphere but not too many that we didn't have room for really great dances!

As ZW said, :worthy: to Marc for his superb set, I can't express how much I loved it! From what I heard of the other set, I thought that was pretty good too!

I can't comment on the Comp, as I wasn't there in time but as for the cabaret, Emma and Alex's routine was good but I could have lived without the other one

I had the most hysterical thing happen during a dance with JiVep, :D he span me out quite fast and we accidentally collided with another couple, nothing serious, we apologised and carried on.. :nice: then after the dance finished, I felt a tugging sensation on my hair  and thought, as it was hot, my hair might have got suck under my armpit (it's happened before  ) but when I felt it, I discovered a pair of glasses!

The poor, temporarily blinded man was searching for where they'd gone.

Imagine if I honed this new-found skill, I could make myself a fortune!

Although, at the end of the evening, Paul did suggest someone search my hair to see what else I may have inadvertently picked up!

Sorry I didn't meet any new forumites!

Oops, missed these...

- The mini bar in the forumite meeting area was a great idea, saving the massive hike to the main bar.
There was a forumite meeting area? no-one ever tells me anything... :tears:

- I thought the Dirty Dancing competition was a waste of time this time, very undersubscribed , only 10 or so couples went in for it out of several hundred people in the room. I think that says something  . Choice of music for Dirty Dancing comp was a bit odd IMO. :yeah: What was it with that competition then? Bodyrockers is a ... challenging... track, I think most would agree. Can't remember the other one.

So were there some special restrictions on how dirty the dancing could be or something? Surely "dirty dancing" is, well, kind of pointless if you put restrictions on it? Very  ...

The Cabaret slot was too long IMO and behind schedule, it was on at midnight.
Honestly, without trying to disrespect all the hard work and talent that goes into these things, I really would rather be dancing than sitting on a hard floor watching dancing... I just don't think a cabaret is needed.

Oh and:

Well I really enjoyed Daventry. Howver I think it's as Gus said about Southport:
The main correlation I've seen between those who had a good time and those who didnt was whether they were part of a posse or not.I know some people who didn't enjoy the previous Daventry night as they didn't know lots of people.

But for me, my regular venues are nearby so I know a lot of folk who were there, including people who came last night from places slightly further up the M6. So lots of good dances.
It was also lovely to see Lory & Lisa from further afield who I don't see so often :tears:.

I coud have done without the competition and some of the cabarets, although the "I'm the real Swayze" bit did make me smile.

I liked the Blues hour at the end  and although I hadn't looked forward to the hour-long drive home, the first light of dawn reaching across the sky at 3am did wake me up nicely. :)

You do wonder why, in the light of other distractions, the local Police felt the need to give out parking tickets on a Saturday night? It's hardy rush hour so parking couldn't have been causing congestion. Maybe they'd finished their game of car colour snooker

Only just getting round to posting. So so so exhausted. I managed to dance ALL night, got home at 4:15 and was up again at 10 this morning to go practising for my other dancing. I am well and truly exhausted !

All in all I thought it was a fab night. So happy to meet many forumites  but so gutted I didnt get to meet everyone. Lucy L - really sorry we didnt get to meet. The time just goes when your dancing. Hopefully next time. I did have some really brilliant dances - not going to list names and I also really enjoyed the blues set - thanks Marc.

Ok, the bad bit
Related to the points I was making earlier in the thread......
Why oh why did we have to have all the breaks. It was quite clear (at least to me) that people wanted to dance - as strange as that may seem.
I second the congrats to Emma and everyone who took part :worthy: but in reality the competition was a real waste of time. We could have just watched people dancing in freestyle and seen the same thing.

Tony really did try his hardest to get the crowd going but I think people were just waiting to dance. Its so hard to maintain momentum when you have to sit down for half an hour. In that way its similar to an athlete (i guess :) ) in that they cant just suddenly stop moving otherwise they need to go through their whole warmup routine again.

Also, I know its not anyones fault it just happens, but it was SO hot  I realise it was a hot day but I imagined a sports hall to have some kind of cooling system. I am going to prioritise in future where I go dancing. Places with air-con will win. When is the next freestyle in Luton (i remember it well) :)

All in all a good night though with just the right amount of people IMO.

Heck, OK {serious=ON}

Well, I apologise for the term, but not for the disrespect. It was 11.30pm, in non-residential area, Saturday night, and they're handing out tickets to people who parked out of the way, who weren't obstructing the non-existent traffic, and who couldn't find anywhere else to park.

It was just a straight revenue-generation exercise. I don't think Daventry leisure centre was the front line in the war against terror (war against Patrick Swayze, maybe...), so I'll treat them like I'll treat other traffic wardens - just above estate agents, just below insurance-company lawyers.

I certainly won't respect a group of people just for being wearing a uniform. Like anyone else, they have to earn my respect by their deeds, I'm just strange that way...
{serious=OFF}

Well I also had a great time! I tried my hardest to find all the forumites I could, and it may have been that I danced with a few of them without realising who they were.

Sorry I didn't find David James or Lucy Locket (who I promised a dance to!), as far as I know, and I don't think I found Paul F - hope I'll catch you guys some other time. I had lovely dances with all the forum people I did find though! I did at least get my promised dance with Cruella, and it was also great doing doubles with Diana S and Jivecat!

I was there all day, and the classes earlier were excellent! It was also lovely to have a big gang from Peterborough there all day - so hopefully the guys will remember to try some of the moves we learned on Tuesday. I was probably one of the few who actually appreciated the break when the cabaret was on, as apart from stopping for a couple of hours to have something to eat and a shower, I was dancing pretty much non-stop from 11 in the morning, to 2 the next day!

Loved the music - both the stuff Rob was playing earlier (lots of latin!) and the lovely bluesy stuff Marc played at the end - just right to fall asleep to.

The worst bit was the drive home. It should have taken about an hour, but took about an hour and a half - fog all the way back - not what you need when you just want to colapse!

"You do wonder why, in the light of other distractions, the local Police felt the need to give out parking tickets on a Saturday night? It's hardy rush hour so parking couldn't have been causing congestion. Maybe they'd finished their game of car colour snooker" !!!!

Being an officer of Northamptonshire Police myself and one of the punters who moved their car too, i did ask them why they were doing this on a Saturday night as it is something that we don't normally do on an evening of said anti-social behaviour. There reply is that the offices in front of Dav leisure centre had made a formal complaint and the area is a 24hr pedestrian zone and hence they had to make a Police presence visible.

All in all, bless them for following orders from the control room Inspector

On a cheerier note, I had a great night with so many awesome dances such as Lisa Stott, Yuko, Cruella, Val Forsey, Angie Murphy to name a few and obviouly Lory and the amazing SPECTACLE she performed :D

I'm not exactly sure what a "24hr pedestrian zone" is, what with all the cars and roads and all, but I'll assume that makes sense.

But, even so, would it not have been better to go in and get the DJ to make an announcement "Can you please move your cars" instead of "Quick! The police are booking cars, move them!"
