Question from a technical ignoramus here..... :blush:

Do the DVDs "work" in the uk? I know there was always a problem with incompatablity of global video formats eg pal etc.

I've never tried importing foreign dvds - are they all the same thing?

Thanks!Australia uses the same PAL format that we use in the UK.

However they may be set up to be in a different region. UK is in Region 2, and Australia is in Region 4. Officially you can't play a Region 4 DVD in a Region 2 DVD player.

Fortunately it still might work:
- many DVD Players sold in the UK are now multi-region.
- dance DVDs are usually done as Region 0, which can play anywhere. (It only tends to be Hollywood and TV companies that use the Region Codes.)

(Confusing isn't it.)

I've never had a problem with any Australian DVDs.

Oh yes... let's not even talk about Evil RCE DVDs... :mad:

Almost all DVD players can be made multi-region - see here (http://www.dvdanswers.com/index.php?r=0&s=3) for a list of "hacks" (it's much less scary than it sounds) for DVD players.

I'd say it's very unlikely that you won't be able to play your DVD, so I think it's still worth ordering.

One other possible problem. A lot can depend on how old your DVD player is. I'm pretty sure the Aussie DVDs will be recorded on a PC, as opposed to pressed in a factory. Some older DVD players can't cope with these recorded DVDs.

Almost all DVD players made in the last 2-3 years work ok.

If your player can play other dance DVDs (eg Camber, Blackpool etc) then you should be ok.

You should also be able to borrow an Aussie DVD from someone. They always seem to sell a lot when they come over...

It's highly unlikely that the DVD will be region coded - it's generally only the major film studios who are interested in encoding. E.G. my learn Salsa DVDs from USA are region 0 - play in any machine as are several concert discs (of course your player need to be able to play NSTC in this case).

It sounds like one of the critical issues will be the age of my dvd player (an antiquated 3yrs+). I think I will try to borrow some friend's foreign dance dvds and see if they play...

...but do appreciate being provided with the info to start investigating!
