Okie. I've seen this on another thread. Tis kinda fun, so we'll see if it works here too.

Going to put up 10 lyrics. You get 1 point for the correct song title AND the correct artist. Bear in mind that many songs have been done by more than one person - so, if you know several groups that have done a song, put them all up.

The 10 songs have a theme. Whoever guesses the theme, gets an additional 5 points. You can guess the theme anytime. You don't have to wait until all 10 lyrics have been guessed.

Just post your answers in this thread. First person to get each lyric gets the points.

Here are your first 10.

1. I've had my share of sand kicked in my face, but I've come through

2. I'm worst at what I do best. And for this gift, I feel blessed.

3. Well since my baby left me. I've found a new place to dwell.

4. Don't know if I'm comin' up or down. Am I happy or in misery?

5. You're built like a car. You got a hubcap

6. Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter or Mars

7. Being good isn't always easy. No matter how hard I tried.

8. Passion, Instant, Sweat me, Feel me.

9. You know that it would be untrue. You know that I would be a liar

10. He said, 'Lets make love on a mountain top, under the stars on a big hard rock'.

Steve

PS. I'm away on business until Friday evening, so I'll come look see how many you got then.

3. Well since my baby left me. I've found a new place to dwell.
Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis

6. Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter or Mars
Fly me to the moon - Frank Sinatra

10. He said, 'Lets make love on a mountain top, under the stars on a big hard rock'.
In these shoes - Kirsty McColl

That's it for me, just picked the easy ones first...

Franck.

Being online when a new game goes up is a definite advantage. I'll try to ensure I post them at different times during the day to try to even it up a little.

(And Franck will still get to each one first! )

Steve

PS. Oh yeah, and that's 3 points to Franck. Taking an early lead!

Graham
5th-December-2002, 02:15 AM
3. Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley and Stan Freberg have both had hit singles, plus about 10,000,000 other artists have recorded it I expect
6. Fly me to the Moon - Julie London
9. Light my Fire - The Doors, Jose Feliciano, Amii Stewart and Gareth Gates

TheTramp

One point to Graham. The version I was looking for was The Doors (just to help you with the theme).

Well done Graham and Franck.

Yes, the theme is that all the artists/singers (if a group) are dead.

More than a woman - AyalahI'm giving you this one Franck, cos I'm assuming you meant Aaliyah!! I'm not sure I should be so forgiving on such bad spelling in future (comments please Heather!) :)

So, scores are:
Franck 6
Graham 6
CJ 1

There's still 2 points left available for title and band of lyrics 2 and 5. And I'll put up the next round Friday evening. It'll be harder next time!!

Okie. Apologies for the delay in putting up round 2. But here it is....

1. I'm goin' back in time and it's a sweet dream,
It was a quiet night and I would be alright if I could go on sleeping.

2. That this love I have inside is everything it seems.
But for now I find it's only in my dreams.

3. Soon we two are standing still in time
If you read my mind, you'll see

4. Since you've gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face

5. Circus life
Under the big top world

6. You keep me standing tall
You help me through it all

7. And if by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of

8. For the morning sun in all it's glory,
Meets the day with hope and comfort too,

9. I'll get to you somehow
'Cause I promise now

10. We saw the writing on the wall
As we felt this magical fantasy

Same rules. 1 point for getting the song name, along with the singer/group that I had in mind, and then 5 points for getting the theme.....

Take it away folks!

Steve

PS. Please do not start looking for the lyrics on the internet straight away. Anyone could do that, get all 10 songs easily, and ruin the game. The idea is to recognise the song lyrics yourself...

Steven
10th-December-2002, 05:43 PM

Just to keep in practice with throwing topics off-thread, what's the 80's song that goes...

"Lets dance... put on those red shoes and dance the blues...
Lets play..."

Just thought it perfect lyrics for Bill :D

Jayne, It's Christmas, so I'm gonna give you that one 'Time of my life', even though you didn't get the Medley bit. You got close enough. No extra points for the bit in brackets. Sorry CJ.

You do get one point though for 'The Greatest Love'. Well done Steven, 2 points for 'Crazy for you' and 'Every breath you take'.

I guess that it's not Lou's choice of music though!!

Latest scores:
Franck, 6
Graham, 6

Still another 6 to guess, and the link too....

Have to admit I cheated (google). Could give all the songs/artists but that would be boring. I'm not totally sure what theme you had in mind, but I found all of these on a particular site (66.181.161.226 - to make it non-obvious to anyone not wanting to cheat), so I have an idea...

1. The Best of my Love - The Eagles

2. Change the World - Eric Clapton

5. Faithfully - Journey

6. Glory of Love - Peter Cetera

9. If Ever You're In My Arms Again - Peabo Bryson

I thought I'd give you a chance to compete, too Steve, so here's one I've prepared!

1. I feel I'm a leaf in the November snow
2. Making all the music he can make
3. These vagabond shoes
4. People have died to set you free
5. The winds of change are always blowing
6. Now baby maybe, maybe she«s in need of a kiss
7. How did you know I'd give my heart gladly?
8. Lord knows I'm not a schoolgirl
9. They'll be laughing and singing, music swinging
10. It's obvious you hate me, though I've done nothing wrong

Usual rules apply.

TheTramp
30th-December-2002, 10:31 AM
Hmmmm......

Okie :D I'll have a go.

Number 3. New York, New York. Frank Sinatra (And many others)

Number 5. To all the girls I've loved before. Julio Inglesias

Number 6. All right now. Free

Number 8. Mad about the boy. The version I have is by Dinah Washington. Though I'm sure that many others have done that one too....

Number 9. Dancing in the Street. Mick Jagger & David Bowie recently, think it was maybe someone like Tammy Tyrell who did it originally, and Rod Stewart & Tina Turner also did a version I believe (and yet again, probably many others)

Don't see a theme yet though :) I'll keep working on it!

5 points to The Tramp for 3,6,7,8 and 9. 1 point to Lou. You're so close on 5, Steve, but the artist isn't quite correct. You might need one more track to get the theme.

Graham
31st-December-2002, 02:05 PM
Okay, you have another 24 hours on this one.

Here's where it stands:

1. I feel I'm a leaf in the November snow
2. Making all the music he can make
3. The Tramp
4. People have died to set you free
5. The winds of change are always blowing
6. The Tramp
7. The Tramp
8. The Tramp
9. The Tramp
10. Lou

Steve had the right song for 5 but the artist credit wasn't exactly right. Oh, and I forgot to mention that it was Bowie and Jagger who won him the point on 9. Of those remaining, 1 and 4 are quite hard, but I'm amazed nobody's got 2. As it may help you with the theme, here's the answers so far:

1.
2.
3. New York, New York (Frank Sinatra)
4.
5. To All the Girls I've Loved Before
6. All Right Now (Free)
7. You Sexy Thing (Hot Chocolate)
8. Mad About the Boy (Dinah Washington)
9. Dancing in the Streets (David Bowie and Mick Jagger)
10. People are People (Depeche Mode)

TheTramp
31st-December-2002, 02:10 PM
Okie. The guy sitting next to me at work reckons that someone called Willie Nelson also sang To All the Girls I've Loved Before.

If he's right, I'll share 1/2 of the point with him.

Honest! :D

Steve

Graham
31st-December-2002, 02:26 PM
Okay, I'll give you the point (to share as you see fit!). The version I had in mind was by Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson, which hit the UK top 20 in May 1984.

Incidentally, as another hint, the actual artists I chose don't really have a lot to do with the theme.

TheTramp
2nd-January-2003, 10:35 AM
Hmmm....

So. Can we use search engines yet then?? :D

Steve

Graham
2nd-January-2003, 02:44 PM
Okay, time for some more clues. 1 and 2 both hit UK number 1 in 1982. 4 was the first UK chart hit for a US female group in 1974.

Search engines can be used after 4pm.

2. You put your left leg in, your left leg out....

2 is a cover version by an ex-punk of a song from a well-known musical.

Can't believe I got the Scorpions track wrong though *duh*, and I am a big fan too

I did say that it was an easy theme.....

The next one should be a lot harder though!! (Course, I say that, and someone will get it really quickly :tears: ).

I've got the next one all ready. Just need someone to guess the last lyric on the current round!!!

Don't worry Sal - I think knowing the Kittens shows as much if not better taste than liking Hootie or the Scorpions! :na:

Steve

Graham
7th-January-2003, 07:03 PM
Are they all by bands which are no longer together?

TheTramp
7th-January-2003, 07:06 PM
Nope. Least, if they have all split up, I didn't know, and it's not what I had in mind :D

Although, that would have been a great idea for a theme. Wish I'd thought of that!! Don't suppose that I could use it now.

Steve

Graham
9th-January-2003, 11:01 AM
Okay, Steve, I'm really struggling with this. Here's the things I have checked and are not true:

Same record label
All first releases
All last releases
All most successful releases
All were first track on an album
All had an album of same name
Singers all had solo careers
Singers all had previous/subsequent careers
Bands changed name
Tracks were all unsuccessful on first release

Here's things I've checked and can't find a link (but I may just not have seen it):

Producer
Band names
Letters/words in track title /band name
Words in lyrics

Here's some stuff I can't check:

All featured a common session musician
All recorded in same studio

So far, here's the only link I can find:
I personally don't have any of these tracks on CD (or at least, I couldn't find any of them when I looked, but I suppose one could be lurking on a compilation album I forgot)

TheTramp
9th-January-2003, 11:07 AM

Ummm. I'm impressed. This is dedication of the highest order!!!

Okie, for that, you deserve a clue.....

If I was the singer in a band, any of our songs would fit the theme!!

Steve

Graham
9th-January-2003, 11:20 AM
Thanks for the clue. In return I'll publically brainstorm:

They're all beginners? (nope - Rod Stewart wasn't)
They're all better than washing up? (hardly a unique theme)
None of them can dance? (too subjective)
None of them have a girlfriend? (Walk like an egyptian?)

Lou
9th-January-2003, 11:23 AM

AND....

(Thinking quickly)....

Just to give everyone else a chance....

I now want 10 more (different) Christmas Number 1's from any year. This has to have the song, and the group/singer. And it must be done without ANY external help (ie. search engines or encyclopedias)!!!

I think that this is pretty tough (There is NO WAY I could do this!!). So, I'll award a maximum 10 points, ie. I'll award a number of points equal to the number of correct guesses - and this will be to EVERYONE who has a go. In order to make it as fair as possible (ie. no looking at everyone else's lists and then copying), please PM me your guesses.

Closing date will be Monday, when I return from Bognor.

Get your thinking caps on everyone!!

The original bonus was going to be to name 8 (at least) of the tracks, without using any reference materials - same as the current extra bonus.

But, I'll give you 2 of the 5 points for initiative. Fair(ish)??

Steve

1 point (and a lot of personal embarrassment it appears, but at least he didn't have to kick himself) to Steven for Cher.

And 5 points to Lou. All artists who go by just one word in their names! Well done Lou. Ain't no stopping you now (no points for that slightly changed lyric).

5 more lyrics to get!!

And don't forget to get in your 10 Christmas Number 1's (see previous post for rules).

Graham
10th-January-2003, 02:38 PM
Having wracked my brains for single-name artists, I've eventually worked out that

2. No plastic money anymore

is from Rock me Amadeus by Falco

Graham
10th-January-2003, 03:04 PM
Okay, like the bed of nails one, I'm fairly sure this lyric must also occur in other songs, but since the other ones in this round are quite well known I'll go for

Round 2 - 10. I feel good - James Brown

This seems rather an obvious link, but the artists so far are all american.

Graham
10th-January-2003, 03:08 PM
I had a think about the missing Round 1 answers, and assumed Lou was correct.

Hey Presto !

Round 1 - 7. For those about to Rock (we salute you) - AC/DC

TheTramp
13th-January-2003, 02:51 PM
OKie. Back from Bognor. Here's some answers for you....

1. There's no talking to you Cher - Do you believe in love? (Steven)

2. No plastic money anymore Falco - Rock me Amadeus (Graham)

3. His eyes are like angels Sade - Smooth Operator (Lou)

4. But hearts are good for souvenirs Tiffany - All this time (Sal)

5. Stop driving me away, I just wanna stay Madonna - Borderline (Sal)

6. From the North to the South Enya - Orinoco Flow

7. Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society Sting - Englishman in New York (Steven)

8. I got a lion in my pocket Prince - 1999 (Lou)

9. Grabbin' his you-know-what Eminem - Slim Shady (Steven)

10. Look my hands jumpin' Lulu - Shout (Lou)

Lou was right with the theme - artists who have one word names.

I can't believe that no-one got Enya and Orinoco Flow. It's the one I'd have got first if I'd been playing. Just goes to show :)

Actually, it stands for Otara Millionnaires Club. Apparently they're "a New Zealand-based urban soul group which relies heavily on Polynesian and worldbeat rhythms", who had a one-hit-wonder with this track.

However - what's the link between this band and the forum? (2 points on offer)

ok - a WILD guess!!!!!!!!!

Have they all changed their names?

John S
23rd-January-2003, 02:59 AM
The surnames (assuming "Pink" is a surname) are all in alphabetical order. Is that the theme, or just a coincidence?

Also, I've just noticed that a lot of the titles followed by the name of the correct answerer make a sort of sense, eg "Crazy Franck", "Space Oddity Sheena", etc. And if I were Will I would be particularly worried - if he escapes from the threat to "Poison Will", he is faced with the even greater horror of "George Michael, I Need Your Sex, Will."

Sal

However, Sheena has the right answer, all the artists in the answer have changed their names. Well done.

So, onto the bonus for this round. Without using any reference materials, there is a bonus 5 points on offer for anyone who can name another 3 artists who have also changed their names - along with their real names.

Feel I should give it to you: Yardbirds is the big part of it, but in the London scene @ that time there was another big band of its day (though not in record sales) who was famous for it's gunslingers.

Thoroughly impressed but knew you were in with best chance of getting it. FYI: Page played guitar on Cocker's version of "With a ..." but then you knew that.

After reading Route 66 stuff, would be curious to hear you Jock. Away with band for the Vally bash but please keep me posted as to what else you do.

Sorry CJ. They can only have 1 point for each correct lyric. I'll happily give DD 2 points though, and Dr. Feelgood 8 points (3 lyrics and 5 for the theme!).

I'll summarise what's left to guess from mine and CJ's rounds tomorrow. When I'm awake....

No problemo dude!!!!

Next Route 66 after the Valentines bash is on Friday 21st March.
Both Dr. Feelgood an' me would be happy to see you there. I always think it's a good idea for Jocks to go to other folks events, (1) to maybe pick up on stuff you haven't considered playing yourself, or haven't heard before ,and(2) to give honest feedback to the Jocks who are playing.

For more details on Route 66, check out www.route66jive .com

I know it's from the album 'Flood' (which contained other classics as Istanbul (Not Constantinopole), Your Racist Friend and Lucky Ball and Chain.

I'm pretty sure that I was listening to that when I was working in London for the first time. Which would make it late 1989 or 1990. I'll go with 1990.

That's almost as many points in 2 posts as you've scored in all the other rounds put together!

Thanks, Steve - but unfortunately, from the point of view of the game, the Dr was out DJing tonight. Don't think I'd have got much though - only Clapton. Not really that familiar with the likes of 'Ronan'!

By the way, Sheena, did you know that your strappy trousers were at Route 66 tonight? (with someone else in them)

Not fair :tears: wish I'd been in them - I was stuck here.

They get about though, they were in Perth on Thursday with me in them. And I believe there's a Welsh beginner who dances in London that wears them too......................

Were they pink by any chance? I've a good idea who that was.

What happens when two people dancing together, both wearing these trousers get tangled up? Will they just have to dance with each other all night ?
Sheena....could you live with having to dance all night with Steve?
Maybe we should have an official trouser untangler:D

Now, an easy little bonus here. So just 2 points for it.

Without using any help, I'd like the names of the groups that each of the solo artists made their names in. In at least 3 cases, there are a couple of groups that they've belonged to, so I'll take either. I need all 10 for the 2 points...

TheTramp

So. Here we go again.....

These are the rules (for those people who didn't play before).

I'll put up 10 lyrics. You get 1 point for the correct song title AND the correct artist. Many songs have been done by more than one person - so, if you know several groups that have done a song, put them all up - as you have to get the right artist to win (because it might affect the 'theme' sometimes).

The 10 songs have a theme. Whoever guesses the theme, gets an additional 3 points. You can guess the theme anytime. You don't have to wait until all 10 lyrics have been guessed. The theme can be from the song title, or the artist name, or a mixture of both.

You can't use search engines to find the tracks until I say so (usually a couple of days after I post each round) - since otherwise, the first person to find each round will easily win.

Just post your answers in this thread. First person to get each lyric gets the points. Scores from before don't count. It all starts again now :D

Here are your first 10:

1. Practice what you preach
2. It can't be that bad
3. Sally can wait
4. You had suspicion on my trail
5. Put pepper in my coffee, I forgot to bark on command
6. I could be golden I could be glowing
7. He's a friend of mine born in the '79
8. That man whom with his fingers cheats
9. Something tells me you're a Devil's daughter

Actually. Looking at the answers you've posted, I see that you MUST have used search engines, since 'Jealousy', and 'Sorrow' you've even got the words 'lyrics' posted in your answer - so you didn't even type them out, you just cut and pasted them from the web sites.

Right, not wanting to be treading on Steve's toes (cos he might tread back and that would hurt me more than i would hurt him :what: ) but I'm putting this up because
1) I spent some time doing it, not thinking Trampy would be up with another one quite so quickly.
2) I've got it written on a scrappy bit of paper that I'm likely to lose if I don't use it quick
3) I'm not "at the screen" Thur and Fri so won't be able to see what happens if I wait till tomorrow to put it up.

So, Steve's is the serious one for PMs, mine is just a bit of fun so post away, but please, as Steve rightly says, leave the search engines out for a wee while, makes it more fun.

There is a fabby prize of one of my very best REALLY naughty dances (with the ear move!! ) for the first person to get the link!!!!
