View Full Version : Signs of forum addiction

Morning all!

I think over the last few weeks a number of us have admitted that we tend to use the forum just a wee bit.....

Here are some of the things that made me realise that I was an addict... has anyone got any others???

- 70 posts in (effectively) eight days
- typing the codes for smilies in text messages and e-mails
- having longer conversations on the forum than with "real" people
- reading an on-line article in an e-journal, agreeing with it and trying to find the "quote" button so I could respond to it (no, honestly, I was...)
- staying up all night to do the work I should have done when I was blethering on the forum
- being unable to susutain an "ordinary" conversation without reference to the forum

....and that's just for starters...

But here's the real test - I dare you to take it....

1. go to the forum home page
2. log in
3. click on "view new posts"
4. wait untill the results come up
5. minimise your internet browser
6. get on with other work on the computer for at least an hour WITHOUT checking one of those threads

if you look at the forum before the hour's up you're an addict.

Anyone got any cures???

Ummm. 65 posts in 2.5 days. Oops. :sorry

typing the codes for smilies in text messages and e-mails
Well, I've been on the internet for over 10 years now, and I'm a member on at least 4 other forums that I post on regularly. So I've been doing that ever since I had email, and way before I had a mobile phone. :sorry

I'm not sure I should even bother going onto the rest....

So posting frequency is one way of knowing that you're addicted - anyone got any others??

And has anyone been brave enough to face the addiction test???

If you are all addicts, then I must be the dealer :really:
I suppose I could always turn it off for a few days... You know, just you get a few things done etc... :D :D

However, as a dealer of highly addictive drugs (Ceroc, the forum...), I have committed the cardinal sin of being a user myself...
Try and pry my RSI afflicted fingers off the keyboard if you dare! :reallymad

Seriously, though, I might have to switch off the Forum for a few days in the next few weeks, so that I can upgrade to a better host etc... Just giving you plenty of warning. I'll try and pick one of the statistically quieter few days to do it.

Franck.

:what: Graham, fancy chipping in to buy a big box of tranquilisers?

And these days would be which ones exactly?

Do you realise, that with many classes closing on some dates over the festive season, people will be suffering withdrawal symptoms anyway and will turn to the Forum as a methadone program?

More importantly, do you realise it's folks like me and Graham who'll be picking up the pieces, Franck...

PS Maybe someone should set up a Yahoo! group nearer the time to act as a substitute:)

Maybe you should do it Saturday night - I'm sure that there won't be many people logged onto the Forum then. You'll have it all to yourself!

Then we can look at, and even post, when we are out dancing. You could even ask for a dance by PM - it would save the walk across the floor (told you I was lazy!)

You must be addicted and selfish then - you've not added ceroc scotland forum to your 'other links' on your web site - wanna keep us all for yourself huh :)

Emma
21st-November-2002, 10:06 PM
Yeah, I've been humming and haaing about adding a dance section to the linkage on my website (http://www.emmaclarkprints.co.uk) ...I've avoided it thus far because that section is not intended as a reflection of my bookmarks - just a selection of interesting stuff. To add a lengthy dance section seems incongruous to me.

And yeah Scathe, I wanna keep you all to myself, bebe!

You know you are an addict when...

You are late for CEROC cos you can't drag yourself off the forum !!!! (even with the knowledge that you'll have to park miles away and get soaked )

You don't hang around and chat too long after CEROC cos you can't wait to get home to get on the forum..

You sit in the same room as your other half (both!) on the forum

Your don't even care if you make spelling mistakes cos you haven't got time to preview everything you say

You talk (out loud kind - remember that !!!) with smilies

You dream about people on the forum (might share with them at the party )

You don't (can't!!) take the time to do the test Jayne mentioned cos you just have too much to read and write on the forum !!!

You look forward to speaking to your cyber chums and stop phoning real people

You consider getting a t-shirt made up with your avatar on it
for THE PARTY so that forum people will recognise you straight away

You change your mind about the above cos you think maybe you could make a better "first" impression if they didn't know who were !!!! (I mean Gus could think I'm an opinionated feminist who wants to lead or ErickLondon could think - oh jeez, EVERYONE could see that stuff ?????!!!!)

I don't think I'M addicted though ... I don't have a problem ... It's like CEROC... never been addicted to that either ... and no way am a ever going to be addicted to blues !!! I just say "no" like the ad says.......

It's all about willpower. You people obviously have no self-control. Me, I can go minutes without checking for new posts.

Oh, and Franck - Stuart made a good point - make sure you give me plenty of warning so I can be prepared with a visit to the off-licence, the video store etc. Otherwise I might have to actually TALK!!

Obviously you're using the forum as a form of orientation while you travel about. Entirely understandable *nods knowingly*

...either that or you're hooked, mate!:what:

So come on, people - those of us coming from the Deep South need to know where/when/how to meet fellow saddos - sorry, I meant forum addicts - at the party. It is a long long way to come and we simply must meet FC, Sheena, Heather, Jayne, BTC, DS, DV, Gadget etc etc......... Otherwise David & I will have to dance with each other all night ('cos we are too shy to ask other people to dance with us - honest!!! )

LilyB

PS - Besides, Bill promised me a dance and I always collect on my promises, even if I have to hunt him down:devil:

:D I don't know that the number of posts a person makes is necessarily the only indication of serious Forum addiction.
Many people like to read the posts religiously, but in fact, do not post replies regularly themselves.
(And it's not because they can't spell and are scared of me either!!!!!!!!  )

It's not true. Maybe in my younger days.....

LilyB I would love to dance with you ....and Oh! an official complaint of the lack of dancing with me at Camber
Can I please second that complaint. I don't think I saw you or David in the Blues room at all. Where were you?? You owe me big time!!!

Not too keen on dancing with TheTramp or DaveB unless I lead
Hey. I asked you if you wanted to dance at Camber. And you turned me down!! You can lead :)

but more than keen to buy you both a beer
Ewwww. Nasty stuff. I'll have a lime and soda thanks (you know me, always on the hard stuff!!)

And it's not because they can't spell and are scared of me either!!!!!!!!
I haven't been here very long. But from what I've seen, I think that the truth is that they are all just scared of you!

I told you. It's not true. I can give up anytime!!
