I have always wondered why I meet people at weekenders that claim to have danced with me at places that I know I have never been.

I have a Doppleganger!

How they could confuse us if we are of very different sizes is strange.

My size has led to some strange comments that all seem to end with "for a man of your size" For example

You have very flexible shoulders for a man of your size.
You have a very light lead for a man of your size.
You are quite intelligent for a man of your size. :what:

Who said that only women get judged by their looks.

In the days when I went to Notre Dame there was a guy there we called Thunderbirds - he just looked like them and danced as if he had strings and appeared to lurch around the dance floor, all the girls tried to avoid him

Last time I went to Ashtons he was there AND he still dances exactly the same and the girls are still running for cover  - however, he has a new nickname - forgotten what it was though

When I first started dancing, my friends and I referred to one of the regulars as "Serial Killer".

Some months later, we learnt that he already had other nicknames including
"Psycho" and "Mad Axe Murderer" Seems to be a theme here!

I've only found one woman mentioned on this thread so far. Why should this be? Do men not give nicknames to female dancers?

Men generally don't stand around gossiping to each other about others, its not in their makeup.

More a manly handshake and greet each other in deep voice, before dancing the night away.

This is a joint effort with my partner - Commis Chef

Vinegar tits
Army Boy (likes to stamp and march all the time)
Bony Tony
Scary Lady
Oaf (known by many other names around the country)
droopy shorts man
Mr Bendy Knees

We only know the real name of one of these people but when we chat these names quickly identify who we are talking about.

I'm a big believer in using people's actual names, out of courtesy. I do use nicknames to distinguish between two dancers with the same first name. Eg, locally, "Little Lynda", and "Trousers Dave".

I think we all are, once we know someone's proper name :) but the nicknames come about when we 'don't' know their name and we're trying to describe them to someone else and then sometimes, it just kind of sticks!

Hopefully if the name's bad, the person never gets to know! :innocent:

Just thought of another...

Wishbone (don't ask!) :what:

We have forgotten the most famous nickname of all

"Sophie No Nickers"

BTW she is aware of her nickname, and finds it amusing !

If you are wondering how she got that name, it is because she always wore thongs when dancing - and that was in the days when most of us wore skirts/dresses with those 'cyling' type shorts/panties to save our modesty

Is LURCH and THUNDERBIRDS (see my post above) the same person ?

He does Lurch around the floor seeking out victems, and he dances quite ridgedly (like a thunderbirds puppet) with starey eyes - if so it is interested how the years have changed his nickname

He is London based and is always at Ashtons
