I'm afraid that after they did their demo neither couple danced at all. They got changed and stood at the entry speaking and signing autographs. :tears:

Not sure why. I'm positive that the ballroom dancers would have loved to have had the opportunity to dance with them. I can't ballroom but I would have jumped at the chance. I expect that the protocol is completely different from ceroc.

Had a lovely evening none the less. Darren is gorgeous!!

Now Brendan Cole - he's my type of gorgeous !!

I was very diappointed when Kylie Jones from series 1 attended local venue. (althogh the lesson was brill :yeah: )

When I managed to persuade her to dance I found the experience very poor.

I was unable to lead her with my MJ moves.

Superb Ballroom dancer she maybe but she can't follow for toffee IMHO.

I'd love to say it was all down to me but I was very gentle with her.

So maybe they stood signing autographs at the door cos the thought of dancing with us petrifies them !!(Muggles eh!)

That has been my experience too. Some reasonably experienced ballroom dancers seem to have trouble at the start following with Salsa and Modern Jive.

- In a way similar to those who are very experienced in non-partner dancing, but have not done partner dancing ( though not to the same degree).

- or maybe Salsa / Modern Jive followers have learned deal with a non-lead.

That said the vast majority of ex Ballroom dancers (in my experience) follow beautifully. You just notice in particular when they don't.

So it wasn't just a 'theatre' event. Would love to know any particular differences / similarities noticed to a Modern Jive event.

That was at my venue and I did speak with Kylie afterwards, she was really enthusiastic about Modern Jive. Those few dances she had at our venue were her first times at MJ. She absolutely LOVED the fact that you could do it to any music. Kylie said she was going to try to get her muggle boyfriend to take up MJ so they could dance together - she's going to get him to go to Godalming Ceroc on Sunday nights and my guess is that he's a real hunk if he can pull a babe like Kylie (hands off girls  ).

She's back at our classes to teach on the 31st March and I expect she'll be a real expert at MJ by then :waycool:

One of my ballroom teachers really hates MJ, and puts it down at every oportunity, and will only play one jive track if we get up and do MJ.
UNTIL we have a party, and she has a little too much wine THEN she gets me up and wants to learn.

What ever we think, ballroom and Latin is readily adaptable to MJ, I do both, and my ballroom partner who doesnt go to MJ, but who attends a mixed Ballroom & MJ events very occasionally is brilliant. :D

In MJ I lead several short rumba or cha cha sequences and most jivers just follow and its great to be doing something completly diffrent. My MJ partner who is a better dancer than I, :flower: actually did some ballroom years ago readily follows these changes. We sometimes have to work at a better start and end point.

If you apply the MJ learning technique to ballroom, and break it up into moves its easy to learn too. So anyone out there who wants to have a go, go for it.

I do get into trouble for finishing a lunge with dip, sit or drop :D

 I booked Anton & Erin for our (Jive Magic) dance at Christmas.

Put a microphone in Anton's hands & he's very entertaining... He had his audience in stitches!

After their demos, they came out onto the dance floor & mingled with everyone, signing autographs etc. We played a few ballroom tracks & they took some of our dancers for a spin on the floor.

On the 25 March we have Darren & Lilia performing  They managed to squeeze us in, in-between engagements in Japan, America and Spain!

I agree - to get the cha-cha in on the right note without coming to a grinding halt first you have to start counting beats in the bar - which is totally alien to MJ. But it doesn't half feel good when you get it right.

Anton is just as entertaining when I go to the classes at Sevenoaks on a tuesday where he teaches at Carol Pickerings lessons (when not doing SCD).

My partner has even held his hips while doing Rumba. I even ended up dancing with one of his former partners at my other B&L class. She must have known him from way back when his name was still Anthony.

A very charming, gracious, cheeky and witty man.

Happy Dancing.

WOW I am really impressed! sounds like a good night!

Would have loved to have danced with them...

Lorna, do they not do lots of other dances that you could have tried?

That actually raises a point though. At ceroc you are encouraged to accept every dance...is this standard through all types or something unique to our wonderful style?

Dx

No,

in fact it was a charity do. 'Strictly for Charity' was the name of the event.
It was a ballroom dancing do where in the middle of the night the two couples did a 10 dance demo. Then they got changed and stood at the entrance to the ballroom and mingled but did not dance. They did have a heavy timetable over the next 2 days what with classes and private lessons. So, they left early, probably to get a good night's kip.

Differences - quite a lot actually. I felt embarrassed to get up and dance for a start. I don't ballroom but I do consider myself to be a good dancer but I
would have felt completely out of place.

No-one seemed as though they were enjoying their dances. Very rarely did I see a smile. It was all a little too serious for me. Perhaps that is the way they are taught. If so then I consider them all to be excellent students.

Very few people danced with different partners. I was dying to ask someone to dance but I reckon I would have got a funny stare. :what:

Mmm, the music was dreadful. I've never heard such uninspiring music in all my life ( and I've listened to and graded Standard Grade /GCSE Music compositions). The only good tracks were when the dj gave himself and his keyboard a break and played some cds.

Oh and I reckon that the average age of the dancers was at least 15yrs older than in mj. JUST AN OBSERVATION. NOT AN AGEISM COMMENT.

To be honest I can't think of many similarities.

Despite all of this I did have a good night. As I said earlier the 2 couples from the show were awesome and really made the evening for me.
I did have a couple of dances, I hid at the back and ceroced when they played a couple of jive numbers.

Lotsa love Lorna x-x

Thanks Lorna.

That's a real in-depth observation. You'd make a great reporter ! :nice:

I guess despite 'Strictly Come Dancing', more modern jive style ballroom events may not come around any time soon.

I hoped it would have been otherwise. :(

I never really noticed but now you mention it I havn't seen ballroom dancers smiling nearly so much, compared to the multitude of memorable smiles in MJ.

Seems quite sad to be serious at an evening event.

The last time I watched a ballroom dancing competition on Sky;I think it was a world championship;I have never seen so many sickly smiles. They had all had their teeth done, sparkling white and it was the men that looked the worst.
There was a cabaret by an ex world champ pair from England (I think his name was Donny and hers was Gaynor) and he looked dreadful. All teeth and plastic.
For all that the quality of the competitors was amazing.

My hairdresser used to be a competitive ballroom dancer and he keeps me entertained by pulling his competition faces for me in the mirror as he snips my tresses. One of these days, we're going to giggle so much that he's going to cut off something that matters.

Hi,

yeah, Donny was actually from Scotland I believe and mmm... loads of fake tan and smiles there. Loads o' cheese!

It wasn't the 2 couples that weren't smiling. Of couse they looked great regardless of the dance style. It was all the regular ballroom dancers who were out for the night. Just didn't seem that enjoyable to me. I also didn't see much room for expression or interpretation. Perhaps the standard wasn't that high, don't know. But, hey that's just my opinion and I don't know the first thing about ballroom dancing. :o
