Any suggestions for a better email client that Outlook?

I used Outlook 97 for years (which was sort of OK, because it was so old it didn't automatically open HTML emails which is where many of the nasties live).

However my email provider is changing its SMTP (?) settings to something that Outlook 97 can't cope with.

I don't really want to shell out for Microsoft's latest Outlook version, so I'm looking for a cheap (?free?) alternative.

Any ideas?

So what are the alternatives?

Personally I use NetCaptor - open the "view today's new posts", r-click on each link and 'open in new window' - lots of tabs in the one program without cluttering up the desktop or status bar. (And you don't have to worry about the search results updating)

And another one (http://www.securityfocus.org/columnists/249)!

For emails try Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/) by the Mozilla Project (http://www.mozilla.org)

Any suggestions for a better email client that Outlook?

I use OPERA for my main browser AND my email client just because its so handy. As a browser the best thing about it is the tabbed windows and the fact that if you close the whole browser you can start again with exactly the same tabs open - not needing to remember what you were looking at. The mouse gestures are also cool, holding a button and moving mouse will take you back a page, reload page etc...The mail just shows up as another tab and you can have a many accounts as you like. Prior to using Opera I used Pegasus Mail for years which is still great, but its less hassle having it in one package. The latest version of Pegasus can look exactly like Outlook if you like that interface and Opera has a ridiculous amount of free skins to make it look the way you want it to. I sed to use talk21.com a lot which allowed you to check 3 pop3 accounts so i could check any mail from anywhere - but they bt joined with yahoo, buggered up the website and now charge money for pop3 collection..sigh!

In fact I should also point out that the famous loophole in opera that phishing scams utilise - that of displaying www.lloydstsb.co.uk or whatever in your address bar when you're actually redirected to some shifty server in russia - simply doesnt work in opera it ignores the phishing emails attempt to hijack the link and sends you to the REAL www.lloydstsb.co.uk
