Prompted by the TV show thread - anyone have any experience of dancing or spectating at (top level) Ballroom Comps (specifically the Latin for my taste, the other, while obviously taking just as much, if not more skill etc, just isn't as much to my taste).

Are there major comps (anything in Scotland even??) that Josephine Public could attend as a spectator?
Do they have London and Blackpool competing to be "the one" comp  ?

Interested :D

Hi Chicklet!

I went to the finals of the Elsa Wells competition two years ago - it is held in the Albert Hall and is a top-level international ballroom and latin competition. I really loved it and plan to go again this year. I understand that Blackpool is huge, although I have never had the opportunity to go along (not sure but I think Blackpool is the no.1 UK competition - I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong).

Not sure about large competitions in Scotland. The place to look for them is on the dancesport website (www.dancesport.uk.com) they have a comp calendar section. And usually open to the public to spectate, as far as I know.

Blackpool is the biggest comp. It runs over a whole week, and each category (eg Professional Modern, or Amateru Latin etc) takes a whole day. They also have team events, a cabaret division, rising star etc.

If you are really into Ballroom, then this is the competition to go to - however if you want to see a range of different dances on one day then others are better.

The International comp at the Royal Albert Hall is my favourite (this is also known as the Elsa Wells comp)

Have been to Blackpool several times and can honestly say that it's pretty amazing - the atmosphere is something out of this world (have even competed there myself - ooer!).
The Albert Hall is a completely different feeling but is spectacular and I would definitely advise you try and get there if you can (but not before I get my tickets, I don't want them to run out first  :flower: ).
If you're just wanting to be nosey, Universities do ballroom comps and they are usually of a whole range of standards, from complete beginners to top am's, so you can get a good idea of what can be achieved. They're also very laid back, so if you get bored you can just leave and it doesn't matter.
Oooh, and if you want to see dresses (as all girls seem to love the sparkly costumes - esp me  ) try www.chrisanne.com - they make some of the most beautiful outfits for dancing I've seen (and also sell practise-wear off the rack too).

Is anyone thinking of going to the Elsa Wells finals on Thu 14 Oct at the Royal Albert Hall but not yet bought tickets?

There is a newspapers available called "Dance News" which lists every competition - they hold probably 4 or more competitions every Sunday all over the Country all of which anyone can go and watch

Yep, but try to get there later in the day to see the finals rather than all the early stuff (and if you are lucky they will have stopped asking the admission fee by the time you get there. ;)   )
