Ceroc HQ, can we please have a lapel badge which we can wear at and outside Ceroc, which has both a Ceroc logo so that it shows Cerocers at non-ceroc events that the wearer is a Cerocer, a very useful thing for those of us who han hardly bear to dance disco any more in any given function, such as at weddings; and which gives our first name after being or ordered up specially, at great pecuniary advantage to the business.
I put this to Lorna, the teacher in Aberdeen, who said, if I can recall her point, that ceroc was not a singles club, in the eyes of the powers that be. My point is that that's all very fine for those of us whose dignity might be offended by the notion that someone dancing next to them might be "on the pull". I would hope that my wearing of a name badge would do nothing to offend somebody more fixed up in life, but to me, having danced almost every available ceroc function here for over four years, this is my social life; if I don't meet a life partner here, it is not going to be accomplished "in any event", while playing golf or skydiving, because Ceroc is about all I do, socially. Not having a great memory for names, there are friendly people with whom I have avoided dancing, because they know my name, and I cannot recall theirs, which I find acutely awkward, and even distressing, as it ruins a dance for me if I'm sure they realise, and will be disappointed that I can't remember their name after too many dances to be able to ask again without being crass. Such situations are not conducive to making friends. Life is short, and we have to accomplish as many goals simultaneously, as we can. Which of us could subscribe to the notion that one should go to Ceroc purely to engage in some technically perfect aesthetic of art, and that socialising is somehow a pollution of the pure ethos of the occasion? Any of the teachers or organisers ? I would hope not.
I hope that a small metal lapel badge will be made available and that people be encouraged to wear it for all others' benefit. Then, if they want to get married after meeting someone for the second time on a return visit from a Dundee "away" function, for example, let them get married and say: "Ceroc changed my life". If they don't, they can say, "thank heaven I never married that funny woman, you know the one, about 150 lbs, dark, short hair, used to come on a Thursday, a friend of the guy with the waistcoat....

Aarrrghhhh.... :tears:

If I had a fiver for every time I've said to someone "sorry I'm terrible with names I've forgotten yours again", I would, er, have a lot more money than I have.

Most of the time I find they've forgotten mine again, too. Sometimes they remember mine immediately (how nice to be that memorable; it doesn't happen often :rolleyes: )

Life is short
Absolutely.

Much too short.

And certainly too damn short to avoid dancing with people just because you can't remember their names...

I like the idea.
A similar one was discussed before, but with colour codes for ability level and having them awarded for completing workshops. {going a bit OTT I think.}

It would be nice to go to any social function in the country and be able to pick out someone that you could dance with and they would know what they were doing. {well... possably a broad assumption, but you get my drift.}

As to remembering names - I have a memorable one: people remember mine so I don't have to remember theirs :innocent: I honestly cannot remember anyone's name. I've been dancing as long as Roland and only remember his, Bill, Lisa, Lorna... erm... Tramp... erm.... and that's about it :blush:. I still chat and recognise people, but I have learned to talk to people without including their names in the conversation.

I think little name badges are a lovely idea.
I am lucky to be blessed with a good memory for names. Just occasionaly I forget the name of a guy I dance with regularly, but, to be honest, I would rather NOT be asked my name than asked it week after week after week by the same person.
I have a new rule now, I happily tell a guy my name three times and after that, if he still asks me every week, I tell him a different name.
Recently I have been Julie, Laura, Rosemary and Samantha to a guy I dance with on Monday night called Matthew. Finally, this week, we both hit on a way of making him remember my name. I've called myself Matthew......surely he'll remember that!!!!!

Yes, I'd wear a badge :)

But on the subject of names....it doesn't bother me how often I say my name to someone, as long as they are nice people asking! There is a guy I dance with most weeks and he asks me *every* time....I just find it amusing and not insulting.

Not to dance with someone just 'cos you have forgotten their name??? Aaaaargh! Life is much too short for that. If you appear to avoid dancing with someone, that is far more likely to be interpreted as a snub, so just get asking!

You will deffo remain single if you carry on not asking for that reason:tears:

I would wear one too, but don't think I need one cos everyone knows Salsa Angel from the Ass length red hair (just like the avatar)

Checked the mirror the other day, its down past my ass now :D

I'd probably rather not wear a badge as I'm not overly fussed whether people know who I am or not. Also I tend to change tops several times on a night out dancing and wouldn't want to keep putting a badge on each new top and putting wee holes in them.

I don't see why not knowing someone's name would stop you dancing with someone, there are quite a few people whom I regularly dance with and even have a drink with on night's out whose names are totally unknown to me. As has been said before life's too short.

And what would happen if you forgot your badge???? If I were to be honest I'd have to say that there are some people I'd rather not know what my name was and am sure that there are plenty of women who feel this way especially about sleazy guys. (am not in anyway suggesting that anyone who has previously posted is sleazy - indeed both the Aberdeen posters are very genuine guys)

No guarantee, sadly.

I dance with someone most weeks, and forgot that her name is Chris. Fortunately I heard someone call her that, remembered, and now I think I've hit the repeat threshold (or is it embarrassment threshold) with her and it'll stick...

The thing is, girls, we guys are captivated by your dazzling beauty and fabulous dancing...

... and there's just no room in our feeble minds for factual data as well :tears:

I think the first part of this idea has some mileage - many, many clubs offer a lapel badge so that other members can be identified outside of a members-only event. I would possibly wear one at a disco - not to 'meet' people, just to recognise anyone that might want to dance. I personally would have no interest in a name badge. It would make ceroc events overly formal and simply be embarrassing outside (like people who come out of a work conference and forget to remove their ID tag).

This ancient thread (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63) contains a couple of interesting solutions to your problem, Roland!

Personally I wouldn't like name badges. Unless after each rotation of the class we introduce a 30-second speed-dating session. :whistle:

You mean you haven't been inducted into using the secret circling "C" handshake yet?

I think a discrete lapel badge might have some merit (maybe a tie) -- especially if you're meeting people in a non-dancing environment.

As for names -- I need to try harder -- I used to try and write them down, need to do that again, especially as people have got aliases now :)

SpinDr.

P.S. Does anyone else have the problem when chatting with friends about dancers, that the ladies know the men's names, and the men know the lady's names -- but not necessarily vice versa? :wink:

That's it for me, once I know someone by their alias, I can't make the mental leap to accepting they actually have a real name - it just won't write to memory.

It's even worse if I don't know they're name and they don't have an alias as I end up making one up :blush:

Many people don't know their real names! They are given the wrong name by well-meaning parents, believe it's their real name, and it goes on from there! I once met a lovely girl named Anne at Ceroc and she 'confided' years later that her 'real' name was Lucy. Obviously she had got it wrong. I even tried calling her Lucy for a while, just to be nice, but her real name had stuck by then so I thought, is it cruel to be kind?

Name badges?? :what: A step too far for normal "outside" wear: I think the idea was a small (about 5p size?), enamal tie pin or pin-badge, in orange, with the star-like dancers on it. Just to be worn any time that you may be going out to a social event or occasion that you would like to find similar minded peeps.

Name Badges I think should be confined to Workshops or Big Forum Gatherings :wink:

{BTW I have now been known for more years by my "alias" than by my 'real' name... although even that name is not my 'proper' name :rolleyes:}

Don't fancy a badge at all, i like it when someone actally remembers my name.
As for non-ceroc events, I think it would be helpful if the men wore a kind of Morris type outfit to let everyone know they are Cerocers.
Then the women could ask them.

Why not, instead of name badges, have a small loudspeaker attached to the top of the head, connected to a small (but discreet) cassette player, on which there would be a 'continuous loop' that would announce to anyone within range your name, your inside leg measurment and maybe even a small bit about your hobbies?

Maybe you could change the colour and size of the loudspeaker according to dance ability, age, mental condition, etc.

I think that would be a winner.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with such problems with names. I can usually remember everything else someone tells me, where they live, work and other bits of information - but not their name - which might make people think I don't remember who they are - I do - I just don't remember what they are called!

At class last week I realised I couldn't remember the name of guy I was with in the rotation - we were standing with our arms round each others shoulders and I thought it might be a good time to reintroduce myself! Fortunately at that point he said - 'what's your name again?' so I didn't feel too bad!

Brilliant idea.............. I'll pass this on the Franck, Lorna and Lisa for immediate adoption. I'm getting a little deaf ( well actually a lot deaf in one ear) so can often miss a name. This would give me all the really important info. What about a photo on our chest as well just to prove it's really who you say it is. :whistle: :D

Would Ceroc pay for the loudspeakers??????
