Divi, where were you - I thought you and Toby had returned to the jive barI know, I know
Wednesday night is a real dilemma now. It is not possible for a girl to choose between Viktor and Billco - they are both fantastic teachers. And then there's always the hope of a quick dance with them later :yum:

IMHO the floor at JB is superior, but there is less space than at Hipsters. And so many wonderful dancers and friends at both venues.

Trying to alternate (but had to miss last week as I was working late). We'll be at the JB next Wednesday, Tessa. Look forward to seeing you :waycool:

Well don't go to Ashtons then, cos your dillema will be made worse. Lynda taught a fantastic Rumba routine last night. I was so inspired by it, that I'm thinking of trying to find somewhere that teaches it!

Any ideas anyone?

:nice:

Do you mean a jive routine based on rumba, or actual rumba???

If the latter, it sounds very cool - and amazing at a Ceroc venue, though it seems to be an example of the shape of things to come.

Linda's ballroom and latin background comes over beautifully in almost everything she does - an awesome dancer and a really nice person too.

She's right up there on my "scary to dance with" list - but as with Nina, she's very good at putting one at ease.

[fingers in ears]la la la la la [/fingers in ears]Arrgh! no! - more temptation and dilemma! Lory - the class sounds as though it was wonderful! I did some latin american classes, including rumba, at a place off Marylebone High Street last year. If the location is good for you, I can try to find the full details and PM them. From memory, it was a Thursday night (fell by the wayside because Fulham became too tempting).

Linda Ellard I assume - people are always (on paper only) mixing us up - she spells her name with an " i "

The amount of emails I get which should be for her, and she gets lots intended for me ( we do swopsies) - mind you i really don't mind people thinking I am her  she is rather beautiful :tears:

Swing especially just inspires me to take my beer outside and cool down for a few minutes.

I like some blues - especially when played live. But most of the standard tracks that get played sound like the blues equivalent of Sophie Ellis Bextor - ie completely devoid of any emotion. Some of the DJs that specialise in blues do play some good stuff, but I can't listen to it all night.

I just want a variety of music to dance to, and not an excess of any particular style. That's why I thought Roger's set last night at Hipsters was one of his best ever.

Looks as if I SHOULD have made the journey last night - if the Oracle said it was good I am sure it was ! I value his opinion

To be fair I haven't been for a while on a Wednesday so I was a little quick to judge and make comment - I have learnt my lesson now - PREVIEW REPLY and READ - AND don't mention names

NB: Swing to me is not Lindy type Jazzy stuff which is too fast to dance to - don't know what to call it now :sorry :

I know what you mean about wednesdays it is a long drive from the south coast on your own (with the drive back even harder)
I like Roger and JB, both are respected DJ's but MY preferance to music is with the JB choons so I would make the drive on my own on a Tuesday but only go on a Wednesday if I were with friends.

On a personal note anyone that knows Lynda will know she promotes Roger as a teacher dancer & DJ on numerous occasions.

She also has this amazing ability to type with her foot in her mouth at times.
BUT....WHAT IS UNFORGIVABLE MM
Is going to the 500 club and not the blues room at Chiswick.

There have been times when I may have agreed with some of Lynda's views on Roger's music, (I'm not keen on Country, though I know some are), but I have to say, last night Roger played one of the best sets I've heard him play, and he got a well deserved round of applause at the end. I would normally have said that this set contained too much pop, but last night it really worked, and I wasn't alone in thinking this.

The round of applause wasn't huge, because the numbers were affected by the bad weather, I wonder how many got as far as the car park, saw what an ice rink it was, and turned around and went home. Getting to and from the car was definitely the most lethal part of the evening. I was practicing my slides both on the dancefloor, and in the car. (But don't mention that to the passengers!) If the numbers were down, the quality certainly wasn't, a wealth of 'sters and stars, and fab dancing all night.

Chris A deserves a special mention, doing an impressive job standing in for Nigel on the night. (I presume Nigel was stuck in the Essex snowdrifts).

Just want to agree with Sheepy on Roger's set last night. A lot of it was "different" but great fun to play around to. Quite a bit of WCS-able stuff too.

Also had only one ( :( ) dance with ChrisA which pretty well blew me away. What HAS that Jayne been teaching you!!!:flower:

Lurch-watch report...

He was at a Ceroc venue on Monday (hey, unrelated I know, , but did you know I taxi at Twickenham on Mondays??)

I had previously had a long chat with the franchisee about him, and she was keeping a close watch on him during the evening, ready to pounce and do the yellow-card thing if necessary.

Apparently, he sat many dances out looking miserable  , and generally behaved himself otherwise.

Undoubtedly.

The thing that clinched it for me was discovering that his rationale for his repertoire of groin-rubbing moves was that "others are seen doing close moves on the dance floor, so why shouldn't it be acceptable?" (does that sum it up Greg?)

Extraordinary, really. Like, you see a couple kissing in the park and deduce from that, that it's Ok to go up and snog some random stranger.

Hi, I have never seen the lurch and would never condone UCP moves if the lady did not want it
But an observation

A wee while back martin taught me some drops and seducers, I went to Eastbourne class and started dancing them :waycool:
Within a few weeks many guys were copying me and risking injury to themselves/their partner.
I started my workshops/teaching as a result to show the safety points

This is my own direct experience of dancers mimicking what they see others do.
Taking care of your partner’s safety is as important as not being rude.

The same principle applies to airsteps, blues or a double pretzel with a northern twist [made up name of move]

If this guy sees these moves he will copy thinking it is the done thing I KNOW IT IS WRONG but it happens

I started the thread 'the shape of things to come' cos I think this problem is going to increase, unless the ladies complain to the organiser and the organiser deals with the guy.
BUT
Imagine the scenario
A lady does these moves with four friends, lurch watches and waits for his turn
Lady complains
Organiser has a chat with lurch
Lurch states she does same moves with the other guys
The organiser replies...........
Yeah but your ugly they are not.

We know the rights and wrongs but the answers are sometimes hard to find

This is the key I think. We need to find a way of encouraging the ladies to be a lot less tolerant of anything unpleasant on the dance floor, whether it be perving, unsafe seducers or even standard yanking.

Another good one for Mr. Chin last night. Hadn't heard a lot of the stuff before but enjoyed a lot of it.

Annette will be pleased!

Anyway, I hope that means I'll get another dance with you at JB again soon. We haven't danced together nearly enough... ;)

Ok 3rd it is then!

I hope so too!! It was fab! will be back as a regular from next week!! Have not danced with you nearly enough, I keep getting stuck down the other end of the room. I think I will have to relocate to stage-side to ensure more dances!... see you next week.

You heard it here folks - JB is the place to be!

Funny how it can be hard to move around the room sometimes huh?! I was trying to get down the other end last week but only made it about half way (can't refuse a dance now can I?!!)

Can anyone help me with this one?

I'm staying in a hotel in WC1 (Russell Square) on Weds night next week (25 Feb) , and wondered if there are any dance venues you lovely forum folk would recommend?

I will be relying on public transport and am supposed to be awake bright and early next morning so don't want to travel too far.

Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help
David

Me for one.... Come and seek me out.... Usually showing lots of cleavage , wigging furiously, and hanging around at the front... ...

I'll be the shy one, probably dressed in untrendy (but made of practical Coolmax) dark top, watching all the good dancers with awe..

Surprised to find it's a Ceroc night rather than another MJ organisation - I did look on Ceroc.com for London classes on a Wednesday but it only shows one (Jongleurs) - this one doesn't show up for some reason.

BTW, I read somewhere that London Ceroc venues have a swipe card system - I still have an old-fashioned card where the information was stored by writing it on the card - will I need to get a new card? Will I have to pay to join again?

Thanks for your replies ,

Hi David!

As Iain said, it must be fate! Jive Bar is fantastic - Billco teaches a wonderful class (with the sparkling Debster), the floor is great and the music (by Annette) always fantastic. TwK and I may also be there next Weds - so can we have another dance or two (I think we danced at Blackpool last year)?

For some reason the new ceroc website is much harder to find venue information on than the old site - or at least, I find it harder to navigate. Perhaps the info is there... As for swipe cards, I think they might give you a new one (hope you wouldn't have to pay) but if you explain that you dance in the Ceroc Central franchise, they might not think it is worth issuing a new one. Not sure, but I think the swipe card system is to help them monitor frequency/spread of dancers in the London franchise. Would be interesting to know....

See you soon (if not Wednesday then at Blackpool??).
xx La Diva

Hi David - well done on choosing such a convenient location and on a Wednesday night!

As for the card - Ceroc were updating their membership info and may swap your card for a new one and ask you to fill out a new form, but it won't cost you anything. Then again it doesn't matter if they don't give you a swipe card either. This venue, unlike our last one, works on the sophisticated pen and paper type of technology.

Admittedly this is not official information, I'm only the demo, but just helpful observation (hopefully). See you there!

Cheers!

p.s. Fab to hear you and TwK will be there again too Div! It will be a great night!

Just in from another great night at the Old Jive Bar! It was great to see you, DavidY - so glad to get another couple of dances with you. Looking forward to more in Blackpool!

Plenty of Forum regulars - the magnificent Foxylady and Doc Iain, the lovely Debster and Billco - any others lurking undetected??

I have to say that I love the JB culture of heading off to the pub for a swift drink at last orders. And everyone seems to go to the same pub these days, which is great. I really miss having that at Hipsters....

The dilemma continues unabated :waycool: Spoilt for choice (not complaining).

And I must add the pub is very happy with it too. :) They were seriously trying to help find a nearby venue for us to dance at while we spent that yukky period at the yukky NJB venue. They wanted us back :) OK, it's business but it was also kinda sweet ;)

Very good fun last night. Can't believe I felt so energised at the end considering how tired and cold I was to start off with!
