I've just bought this new computer (well, actually refurbished, but it appears to be brand-new) and although I've always used the scroll pad on my other laptops with no difficulty this one is proving a bit of a problem. It changes the size of the display without warning, flicks about unexpectedly and will often refuse to drag the cursor across the screen. Often it works more or less normally but has been very irritating while working on it this evening. I've had the machine less than 3 weeks.

Is this problem likely to be something I'm doing wrong or could it be the machine that's dodgy? Is there a way of usting the scroll pad? I can't find any reference to it in the Control Panel. Should I march it back to PC World without delay?

I do get that problem with my current laptop. I never had this with my previous nightmare one. I just assumed that it was more sensitive. I have a HP Pavilion now.

I don’t know if the problem is linked to the latest version of Windows

That's strange, it's a HP Pavilion that I have just bought.

It could be anything from a dodgy driver to the way you are using it I'm afraid. This version comes with an inertial scrolling feature which is slightly different to what you may be used to. It is worth while taking it back to PC world and getting them to check it out for you.. If it is a usability issue, they will be able to show you the optimium way to use the new feature.

You will find the settings for the scroll pad under Control Panel -> Mouse -> Device Setting ....
