View Full Version : Forum Major upgrade!
Franck
16th-June-2011, 05:09 PM
Hi guys,
I have been postponing this upgrade for weeks (months?) but finally decided to stop procrastinating and go ahead with it. I will be working overnight tonight (from Midnight onwards) to upgrade the forum and as a result will have to close the forum overnight.
If all goes to plan, the forum should be running tomorrow, but from past experience, a few things might break, and my plan is to fix them and get the forum back to normal during the course of Friday.
As this will be a major vbulletin upgrade, some of the existing features might either disappear or not quite work over the next few weeks.
On the other hand, there should be many exciting new features to discover and play with.
I'll be looking forward to your reports on the things I need to fix over the next few days...
Thanks for your patience, and I hope you enjoy the new improved Ceroc Scotland Forum!

Phew, It's now almost 7.00am, and after an all-nighter, I have upgraded the main part of the forum. I'm probably about 70% done, so you'll spot many missing things and broken areas.
I'm now going to get a few hours sleep, and will look forward to your error reports, feedback and areas still needing work when I get up later this morning!
Have fun all,
Franck.

OOh.. at first glance it looks so different and the moderation side of things looks scary too
But I do love playing with new stuff..... (and I love the new Mod zapping tool, that sends a real slap through the screen of the offender... such fun!:whistle::wink: )

Lory

Just heard from some people who aren't able to post..
They can view everything but when it comes to posting, they're being told they need a widget or something like that?
Now, I'm thinking that maybe EVERYONE is experiencing the same problem, as as far as I can see, I'm the only one who's posted since the upgrade
Can anyone reading this, try to post please... then we'll know

Hi guys,
I have just found another bug with the Facebook integration, so will have to recompile php on my server. As a result, I'll have to close the forum for a short while again.
Once things are back, it would be great if you could check the Facebook integration features by clicking on the 'f Connect' button at the top...
I'm aware of the missing features and links and will try to re-enable most of them over the next few days. Keep the reports coming (once the forum is open again).

How does one remove their vote from a poll, if they change their mind?Seems that will not be possible at the moment.
The ability to change vote in polls was a hack, which might not be compatible with the new forum version.
I will investigate alternatives, but haven't found one so far.

will be glad when can go from the uber bright orange to something gentler
You might want to explore:
1. Select 'Home' on the top left
2. Select 'Forum' next to the 'Home' link you just clicked
3. Look on the next row down and a little to the right, and select 'Forum Actions'
4. In the drop-down menu that appears, select 'General Settings'
5. Scroll to the bottom, and in the 'Miscellaneous Options' section is a drop-down selection box labelled 'Forum Skin'.
6. Try the 'Calm Blue' and 'Clear Green' options and see if you like them more than the 'Guantanamo Orange' default
7. Under no circumstances try the 'Mobile' option. I just selected this, and I'm going to have to hunt down the relevant cookie and bludgeon it to death with a heavily modified wooden club with rusty nails sticking out of it

I've moved a bunch of posts across from Lory's test thread into this thread - partly because I think that's where they belong, and partly to make sure the Mod stuff still works for me.

It works ok on my phone and is much lower bandwidth, but it has a few bugs, including the inability to revert to another style if you pick it on your computer.

As has been pointed out, you can now choose from 2 or 3 different colour schemes by selecting the drop down menu at the very bottom left of any page. We have Happy Orange, Calm Blue or Green Clear. I have just now added a new app for iPhone / iPad / Android OS phones. The app is called Forum Runner and allows you to browse the forum from your smartphone or iPad much faster than via a browser.
There are 2 versions of the iPhone app: Free (is limited but allows you to try the features) and for £1.19, you get the full version, which allows you to post, upload photos, get push notifications etc...
Here are the links for the itunes store:
FREE version: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/forum-runner-free-vbulletin/id363534651?mt=8

A few things have been moved, making the transition more stressful!.
You can edit your post by clicking on the 'edit post' at the bottom (next to the reply tabs) of the post you want to edit (instead of the drop down menu where it used to be). I haven't changed the permissions for editing posts, so you should be able to edit in the same way you used to.

You probably want to follow these instructions (http://www.todayinwindows.com/2011/02/remove-those-only-secure-content-is-displayed-popups-in-internet-explorer/) to stop the messages. (The exact windows/options/buttons will vary a bit depending on which version you're using - google 'only secure content is displayed internet explorer [insert version number here] to find some instructions for your version, if the page I linked to doesn't make sense to you'.)

What's the difference between the orange, blue and silver thread icons?
Sorry but it's not very obvious to me
and sorry if it's been asked before . .

The quick reply thing is a bit weird - it gives me a "you have already posted, you must wait X seconds before you can post again" message every time. Firefox 3.6.17, Calm Blue theme.Thata is a very odd error message, there might some software preventing double posting and somehow Firefox sends the Post signal twice? I'm not familiar with Firefox 3.6, at least I can't remember, I am running Firefox 5.0... Maybe you're due an upgrade.
I don't have that problem but I miss the smileys being on show :(Do you mean in the Quick Reply? If you click on 'Go Advanced' you get the full display of smileys on the side of the reply box.
I keep getting a messsage up on my PC saying "only secure content is displayed" with an option to show all content - I press it, but it has to be done every single time I change threads
Is this something to do with the settings on my computer, and if so, can someone please tell me what I need to change? :flower:This sounds indeed like a Microsoft Explorer bug. Have you tried Meghann's suggestion?
Thanks Franck but don't you mean less stressful? :nice:
I can see the edit this post button but when I press it nowt happens
oh it does now! :)No, I meant more stressful, any significant change will increase stress levels, I just hope you'll all assimilate the changes and that the new features / functions will make the change worthwhile.
I did not just upgrade for the sake of it, in fact I postponed the upgrade for a year or so to make sure the new version was stable.
My aim is to make the Forum relevant again by increasing the ways you can share posts with your dancing friends and hopefully, everyone will realise that Facebook is not as good a discussion platform, and that by integrating the two, you get the best of both worlds.
My first post on this new upgrade - love the purple :awe:
Spell check addition ..........
ooooooooo.... using the edit function, tried to add a smilie and my screen froze ???????? (not gonna try smilie again)Not sure what browser you use, or if you have some features turned unavailable. If you click on the 'Forum Actions' drop down menu at the top of the page and select 'General Settings', you can then scroll down to the following and select 'Standard Editor of instead of Enhanced Interface, this might fix the freezes.
Message Editor Interface:
Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing
Basic Editor - A simple text box
Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls
When posting messages to the forums or other members, there are three interface types available to you. The simplest of these is a simple text box, while the last is a fully-fledged WYSIWYG editor, which allows you to format your text as you want it and see the results immediately.
Depending upon the capabilities of your web browser, you may not be able to use all of these options. If you experience problems when posting messages, try switching to a different interface type.
Tried all that but no, still not working. Still very orangeOk, I found a weird permission issue with Silver Members. I have now fixed it, so this might have sorted your issue. Let me know. You might have to clear cache restart browser again, just in case.

Firefox seem to have changed their numbering system recently - they had lots of 3.something versions for ages, and went to 4 only a few months ago and are now at 5. So 3.6 isn't that old.

As for the issue, David, could you describe how you use the 'quick reply' feature, do you click on "Reply", on "Reply with Quote" or do you just click in the quick reply box and type a reply?

This is reply with quote.... and that gets the problem; first a "are you sure you want to navigate away from this page" prompt from the browser, then I press OK, then it comes up with that "duplicate post" message...

Just curious as to how the upgrade links with Facebook and what happens if you link your Facebook account?

It will ask you to authorize the forum to access your basic info on Facebook and will give you the option to import a few details from your 'info' page on Facebook (interests, date of birth, that kind of things).
The main difference, is that from that point on, you will be able to publish to Facebook any reply or any thread you start. This will appear on your wall (only if you tick the box each time). You will also be able to 'like' a thread, and this will show on your wall. You will also see '5 of your friends' like this thread message next to the posts.
On your Facebook wall, people will see a short summary of the post you liked with a link to the Forum.
New members will also be able to register by using their Facebook account to fill out most of the info.
To give you an idea of how it looks, I have ticked the 'Publish to Facebook' box for this reply, and you should be able to see the post on my Wall on Facebook.

I can't seem to get the like button to work though, it just flashes that I like it and then goes back to 'be the first of your friends to like this'...

From another thread, but I think it's relevant here.
Who's Gloria ?????????? Cupid thingy ............. is that spam ??
It is displayed at the bottom of the pollI think it's adverts. For some reason they don't get blocked all the time, even for Silver members. For me it's OK in Firefox but I get the ads in Internet Explorer.

And the new twitter widget impacting my ability to use the forum at work...:sad:I get a problem with the Google Plus links.
Work blocks these, but the browser Back button then has a list of Google Plus links (one per unread post I think) that Ihave to work your way Back through to get to the actual previous page.

It's got to the point that I can no longer view the Forum at home.
Each page takes so long to finish downloading that I never actually get to see the latest posting - my patience isn't too bad but even I'm not going to wait THAT long!
Not sure how long it's going to be before work notices but if I suddenly stop posti

I have the same problem with my boyfriend's computer. Turning off JavaScript to stop the chat widget from loading helps, but it's still slow and you lose some of the other functionality as wel.

I tried it (from two different browsers) and it just hangs there without posting.

Yeah, for some reason, the Facebook connect widget stopped working. I have now updated to the latest version of bulletin, and all should work properly.
