ok guys I have a very basic question to ask  ... I'm trying to copy (unprotected) DVDs using my mac, but haven't really got a clue how to do it. Do I need a software ?

Grateful for any help... I'm becoming such a technophobe.... :( :tears:

I've not used it myself, but DVDRemaster (http://www.metakine.com/products/dvdremaster/) is reckoned to be pretty good...

See if it was a pc......

You will need a program to do it I assume as I doubt Apple will encourange DVD ripping. Try a prog Called MactheRipper which can be found here http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14414

MacTheRipper is a good program (with a wonderful name :D), but it's only a DVD ripper / protection remover - it's not a copying utility. DVDRemaster (or the equivalent) is what you'd need to copy an unprotected DVD.

Caro do mean copying as in converting the DVD to a video file of some sort? If so try Handbrake (http://www.freeapps.co.uk/apps/handbrake) it's free and it's worked well for me in the past.

Yeah but it's nice to have a whole handful of progs available to make your comp crash.

Nope lol. Nearly did. Was cheap enough and nearly got it to have a play. TBH I used to love using Macs when I was doing DTP work and graphic design.

Just resisted getting one as funds a bit tight at the mo and Claire would kill me if I put a thrid comp in the front room

Thanks all, it turns out I've since found out that no software is required, I just needed to go into the disk utility and make an image of the DVD and then burn it onto some blank disk.
It was easy... if you knew how. Apple has its own ways of working and terminology...

If it's just a simple disk copy you don't have to use disk utility to make an image. In finder click on the DVD and select the items in it, usually VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS, right click and copy (or use cmd + c). Paste them somewhere then once copied create a new burn folder and pop the folders in there to burn to a new DVD.
