View Full Version : Help - going abroad to learn to dance

I'm considering buggering off on my own for a couple of months, to learn to dance abroad. Call it a (very) early mid life crisis, or just general boredom! I love dancing blues (been doing it a couple of years), and have been learning WCS on and off over the past year or so, and tango over the past 4 months.

Learning tango in BA was the first thought that cropped up. Has anyone done this before? I'm not sure about it as I do not know Spanish, and while I am looking at courses that teach Spanish and tango, I find the whole idea quite scary - especially as I will be tavelling on my own! Anyone got any suggestions/recomendations/advice? If I go I'd like to do this very soon - departing in the next month.

I did have a thought that I should go somewhere English speaking (good ol'd US of A) for WCS or blues instead but don't think I'll be able to find anything as intensive for that, in one place...again any thoughts on this? I think I would prefer to do this (over tango) purely because of the language issues (far less scary) but don't think I will be able to find anything similar to tango school there...and I don't drive so would need to be somehwere where everything is pretty much in one place.

Any thoughts/advice muchly appreciated,

I x

Unless you are completely carefree and prepared to take whatever life throws at you, I would suggest you do some internet research first. A quick Google search of "buenos aires, tango" will give you plenty of websites offering to take your money in exchange for lessons, here's one example (http://www.argentinatango.com/tango-overview.php) - no doubt most of them are ok, but you should try to get independent advice. Club Dance Holidays (http://www.clubdanceholidays.com/Tango.asp) also do tango holidays in BA.

One place to look for local/independent reports is the Buenos Aires Travellers Forum (search done for "tango lessons") (http://www.tripadvisor.com/SearchForums?ff=979&geo=312741&scope=2&q=tango+lessons&x=15&y=5&returnTo=%2FShowTopic-g312741-i979-k570140-Tango_lesson_recommendations-Buenos_Aires_Capital_Federal_District.html) on www.tripadvisor.com. No doubt there are others.

Good luck.

Thanks John. I have been googling and have found some packages that look good but still feel a a bit like it is going blind. I'd be interested if anyone has done anything similar? Currently this one looks very reasonable but would love to find out if anyone has actually done this: http://www.gicarg.org/PROGRAMS/OtherPrograms/TangoLessonsinBuenosAires/tabid/96/Default.aspx

If it's intensity you're after (in an English-speaking environment), spend a month in Herrang (http://www.herrang.com) (probably have to be next year though, as this year's mostly booked up)
Not quite the dance mix you state, but you'd have the choice of Lindy, Boogie Woogie, authentic Jazz, Tap and Balboa. With a little dash of Blues. About the most intense boot-camp style dance event I've ever come across.

I can't tell you how much I wish I had the time and money to do a whole month there...
