I was fiddling about on the interwebs when I came across a reference to Discofox (yes it really is called that) which is apparently a Continental version/cousin/related species to MJ.

It's also known asDisco Hustle, Swing Fox, Disco Swing and Rock Fox, according to Wikipedia...

I saw some clips of it on YT - YouTube - Bodensee discofox cup 2007 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pKpE7VbN0M) - and wondered whether anyone here has ever heard of it?

Huh, interesting.

This clip looks just like MJ, although the footwork's a bit more like Ballroom Jive I think?

The footwork definitely has more of a look of Ballroom Jive, though that guy in black in the forefront seems to show this more than the other people on the dance floor...the bloke at the back chucks his partner about like a sack of spuds!

These are the current Discofox champs - just out of curiosity, how do they stack up (in forumites' opinion) against the best in the UK?

Well, no, but that mud wrestling image is all I can visualize now :) Memory not good, but think it came from a Westie, Westie forum or something.

It is very similar to New York Hustle, which was originally derived from mambo in the '70s when disco was very popular. Much of the dancing in Saturday Night Fever is hustle. Judging by that clip, discofox is danced to faster music than hustle, but the basic footwork is the same.

There are a few things unusual about it. The basic pattern takes 3 beats (rockstep-side-side on &1-2-3), so you are always drifting across the beat. As a result it favours music where there is little difference between the downbeat & upbeat, such as disco. The movement is very quick, and could cause injury if you led it like most other dances. Instead it is danced almost entirely in compression.

If done well, it is one of my favourite dances to watch. Unfortunately it is very easy to do badly.

I don't think anyone in the UK teaches it. If you want to learn it, then your best bet it to wait for Steve Neeren to come over again.

I thought they were quite impressive (he loves a ducking move doesn't he? :waycool:) though it all looked a bit manic.

I can vouch for that, got a quick glimpse when Steve was over here last with Lily doing a quick demo of the Hustle and it looked a lot nicer than those clips, sorry to all of you who liked it

It certainly did look a bit manic! No room for ladies sabotaging, crikey you'd have your arm ripped off! It was interesting to watch though.

A lot of their moves reminded me of Mark and Jackie from Wales. (They used to be well known on the competition circuit.) I thought the clip was great and would be a fab dance to learn (not sure I have that much energy though )

After checking out the video above I agree that the dance looks like ballroom jive (or more like east coast swing) just without the triple steps.

When we were in cyprus last year we met a german couple in the hotel who were pretty good dancers they danced it whenever a jive track came on they said its a really popular dance in germany which is taught in their ballroom and latin class

:yeah:
I lived in Germany many years (being married to one at the time) and 'Disco Fox' used to be taught in schools and local youth clubs. A lot of kids grew up knowing basic steps to partner dancing.
Something we should do in this country perhaps? ... but thats another thread

I spent my year out from Uni in Germany and did a short ballroom class. Disco fox was one of the dances taught and was my favourite. It always seemed to be taught to Lionel Richie 'You are my destiny' though! (this was some time ago!)
