View Full Version : Which way is the lady spinning?

Interesting one here (http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,22556281-661,00.html), is the figure spinning clockwise, anticlockwise or can you see both:whistle:

Meant to reveal if you're a left brain or right brain person. I was a left brain person but with a bit of concentration could think like a right brained person.

Connie

Clockwise, so I suppose that makes me a rightbrained person.
Though I can get it to spin both ways. Must be a women be, I can multitask or is that multi spinning?

I saw her spinning clockwise immediately, but after concentrating could make her spin anti-clockwise. Took me a moment or two to get her back clockwise...

Not sure about her spinning technique though... It looks weird, but it seems to be quite effective – she's still going strong and hasn't put her other foot down once! :respect:

Guess that means I'm nice and balanced!

I had her going Anti-CW/ CW / Anti-CW / CW again / Anti-CW .. it was as if she couldn't make her mind up !! a couple of seconds one way then a couple of second the other.. over and over and over !!!

If I sing "Because of You" I can get her to repeatedly do a half turn CW , half turn ACW etc

I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did
You fell so hard
I've learned the hard way, to never let it get that far

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
I'm forced to fake a smile, a laugh
Every day of my life
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid

I watched you die
I heard you cry
Every night in your sleep
I was so young
You should have known better than to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain
And now I cry
In the middle of the night
For the same damn thing

Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I tried my hardest just to forget everything
Because of you
I don't know how to let anyone else in
Because of you
I'm ashamed of my life because it's empty
Because of you
I am afraid

Because of you
Because of you

Scroll the page down so that you can only her foot - concentrate on it just moving back and forth rather than around. Slowly scroll up. Ahh, neat. Apparently I'm not left-brained or right-brained. Instead I'm "correct".

Edit: I suspect there's just as clear "evidence" that she's spinning anti-clockwise, that the left brain would pick up, and the point of the test is which evidence you instinctively trust.

How on earth can she be spinning anti-clockwise? I just can't see that at all.

She appears to be moving clockwise to me - so strongly that it takes a great deal of effort for me to see it in a counter-clockwise rotation.

I'm normally pretty good at being able to flick between perspectives on these things but not this one for some reason.....

Does being left-handed effect anything here?

don't think so, I'm right handed and like you I can usually 'switch' optical illusions fairly easily... but that one still needs me to concentrate an awful lot ! (on the foot moving back and forth, then I can make it spin the way I want - and even then sometimes I fail, I can actually get the supporting foot to spin one way while the rest of the body spins the other way )

Gettin better though ;)

not that it proves anything, btw :na:

Having managed to get her spinning anti-clockwise again, the reflection/shadow evidence works just as well for this direction – in fact, maybe better.

So maybe she really is spinning anti-clockwise.

I think the reason why most of us are seeing her spinning clockwise is that we are looking at her "from below" – i.e. her head is further from our eyes than her feet on the screen. If you deliberately position yourself to be looking down the screen, so her head is nearer, it's easier to see her spin the other way.

All to do with perspective, or something...

I'm pretty sure it's neither. It's easier to understand with a spinning hoop because of the symmetry. The way you'd normally tell which was the back and which was the front as it spun would be shadows. By blacking her out, there's no-way for your brain to tell. However your brain is remarkably good at filling in the gaps so it makes a decision and sticks with it (until you look away, or think about kissing.....)

What gets me is... She appears to be rendered using the Basic Poser Render model. I may be mistaken but I think that's Poser 4.0 - Victoria. (I do a lot of 3d computer graphics! Povray, Moray, Bryce, Blender, Terragen, Poser etc)

Now rendering a static figure is easy enough and then rotating it around the Y axis is simplicity itself.. I just can't figure out what the "artists" have done to make her float up and down slightly as she spins.. Sloppy animation if you ask me

I don't know Poser, but Simply 3D Max will let you add a bounce in the y axis easily enough.

Sloppy animation if you ask me
I'm guessing it doesn't work as well without it. Using the example of a hoop instead, a rotating hoop side on without shadows would most likely be interpretted by your brain as a vertical line that openned out sideways into a circle and then closed again. In order to get your brian to better fill in the gaps, she's rotating, off axis and bouncing (bad dancer!) So for example, you should still be able to "see" her bust even when she's directly facing you and there's nothing to see.

Oh Don't get me wrong.. I KNOW what they've done..I just can't figure out WHY

it would have been so simple to have a nice smooth rotating figure with no "wobble" and no "bounce" .. I suspect they did the animation manually.. and manually rotated each frame and at some point they've accidentally engineered in the bounce.

You've got some serious explaining to do to Twirly

I don't see why? Poser is the best program on the market for rendering human mannequins for my 3D renders. I guess it's effectively replicating ballet turns, where the dancer goes "on pointe" for each turn and rests back on her foot between turns. Presumably, however, their model can't bend her foot.

Presumably, however, their model can't bend her foot.

if it's Poser (which I'm 99.99% sure it is) then yes .. yes it can !!

but rather than individually animating the figure they've left it static with a simple transform rotation around the Y-axis. I must get my copy of Poser out and recreate it.. either sans bounce or with flexing foot.

Sorry, but your "bounce" looks like a square wave, where Caro's elegant avatar is following something more akin to an upside-down bell curve.

For reference, here's a video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhB3sZnxsT4) demonstrating (IMHO) why the dancer is bouncing through each turn.

Oh, and here is why (http://www.abt.org/education/dictionary/terms/fouette.html) this wee animation is so appropriate for Caro. ;)

I still think the bounce is sloppy animation.
Sloppy animation is slap-dash, quick-and-dirty stuff. The creators of this animation spent time adding the bounce. Why would they add it if it didn't either add to the effect, or make it more interesting in some way?

Depends which state of mind, or hemisphere I'm in, I can see her spinning both ways if I concentrate on changing direction:na:

and yes.. i know.. her toe should be directly on the point of spin.. she's standing on a very small turntable ok? and invisible turntable

What have you done to the lady in my avatar!!!! :tears::tears::tears:

Now that she is so giant there is no way I can make her spin clockwise. Funny as with the small one I struggled to make her go anticlokwise.

Are you sure you just haven't messed up Beo and she is really going anticlockwise now

Ugh

When her right foot is facing you, its going from 9 O'clock, (8, 7, 6, 5, 4,) to 3 O'clock.. Definitely anti-clockwise, in my eyes!
I later changed my mind – she is spinning anti-clockwise. No doubt about it. However, most of the time I see her spinning clockwise.

ok.. which way is THIS lady spinning (sans bounce)...I can make her spin either way at will. (I have more MJ talent than I thought.) The lack of bounce was worrying, I thought I was losing it, but, merely by picking up the laptop and shaking it all was as normal.

She's not your avatar.. she's a completely new render..

I can make her spin either way. in fact when I was rendering her she took it upon her self to change direction between frames !!

The original was still going one way, I deliberately rendered this one to start as anti clockwise to prove it could work both ways.

I apologise for not making her a bouncy WCS hotshot though. :na:

Sorry, but your "bounce" looks like a square wave, where Caro's elegant avatar is following something more akin to an upside-down bell curve.

well Since I was using Povray and wasn't going to dedicate a huge amount of time on it I'm glad it looks like a square wave as that is EXACTLY what I used.

Sloppy animation is slap-dash, quick-and-dirty stuff. The creators of this animation spent time adding the bounce. Why would they add it if it didn't either add to the effect, or make it more interesting in some way?

probably not as much as you would have thought. they probably used Puppeteer. You render points (or key frames) in the animation and change the position of the arms , legs, rotation etc Then the animator sets up a custom interface where he/she draws a path around these set points and the software very cleverly interpolates between them. From someone who's used the package it looks like they've used several points each with a particular amount of rotation put on one or more frame they've accidentally nudged her up a smidge. By interpolating between a lower and a higher point Puppeteer would automatically produce a smooth curve.

See here - YouTube - Puppeteer Animation in DAZ Studio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AZRYJC9RV8)

Besides if she was deliberately bouncing up and down to produce spin.. her toe would stay on the ground and her ankle would flex up and down.. while what she's doing in the avatar is magically levitating up and down. Her foot doesn't even seem to touch the ground at all.

my claim of sloppy animation still stands.. :na:

Puppeteer is fine for some things but it lacks precision IMHO.. I like my key frames to fire at particular moments in time.. besides I use Poser and not Daz Studio and do my animation the hard way.

{Beo's Huge Lady}

Whilst she's generally a fine curvaceous figure of a lady, W.T.F is that lump at the top of her right thigh  shouldn't she get that seen to?

Lump ? Lump? it's her bum cheek :) (left thigh BTW .. or is she spinning the other way for you too)

one sec let me check... yup Bum cheek.. (It's the way her leg is sticking out.. the model isn't perfect. Lacks the morphs that allow you to customise things like bums and boobs!

This is the figure with the light on (Have spared her blushes with a little subtle obfuscation! )

it's generally quite realistic !

Ohh She heard you and she's none too pleased about you criticizing her bottom

I also scaled down the original spin animation.. it was a bit on the big side.. sorry.

Actually, I think I'll ask a friendly moderator to move the 3D image rendering discussion to a thread in the Geeks Forum. Sorry I've derailed this thread long enough !
