I went to see a Zydeco band ("Joe Le Taxi") at Swamprock, at the ubiquitous* All Saints in Finchley on Saturday night. It was great - friendly atmosphere, good music, and relaxed. My eyes were also opened to a whole new set of dance styles - Blues Zydeco, Waltz, Two-step and so on.

Zydeco seems a bit like "bouncy Bachata" to me, at least in terms of the timing; there were lots of different styles there, I even saw a couple doing AT :what:

Like I said, it was great fun - I'm glad I went.

So, has anyone else tried this style of dancing? What do you think of it?

* Salsa on Fridays, Ceroc Mon-Tue - it occurs to me that if they did milongas, all my dancing needs would be met in a single venue...

I LOVE ZYDECO both the music and the dancing - try listening to Keith Franks (http://www.keithfrank.com/)(he came to England a couple of years ago) :respect: and the master Boozoo Chavis (I am proud to say I met him in Lousianna in 2000 at a Mardi Gras ball)

The music's great isn't it? (a pox on yer chart stuff) though a little too energetic for me these days. I love that exuberant squeezebox. There's an annual Cajun and Zydeco festival here in Gloucester in January and also one in nearby Bristol in October. So there would appear to be quite a vibrant Zydeco 'scene' westcountrywise, if not nationally. We do, perhaps, tend to take an MJ blinkered view of the dance landscape.

Naughty lady; I hadn't noticed that musical corner. Now I find that the tempo is not always as frenetic as I had thought and at least one track would entice me onto the floor for a lazy smooch.

They are fantastic live :worthy: the UK bands just don't compare with the Louisianna ones

If they ever come to the UK again I will post it on the forum

I was probably doing it wrong, but I didn't find it that energetic? Not many spins or turns - yes, I saw some people doing what looked like lindy / jive, but most people weren't. Having said all that, I only danced less than half the time...

I Love Zydeco music, though have never tried the dance style. I suppose you could really describe it as black Cajun music, and it's the black R&B influences in it that I really like. Thanks for the link Minnie, I'll enjoy having a listen:hug:

:yeah: yes I would agree - the Zydeco clubs in Lousianna are 90% black, the white clubs are mainly Cajun with some Zydeco thrown in

This link (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AbclpzZ2RHw) is just like many Zydeco dances I went to in Lafayette (Lousianna) - it is really easy to learn, as it is mostly feeling the music (if that makes sense)

Local dancers do it like this (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9ApMB4wqkpE)(Keith Frank providing the music) :worthy: even the very young (under 10 years) and the very old (over 80 years) can be seen dancing it.

(BTW I left my heart in Lafayette back in 1996 and went back there every year for about 5 years - mostly Mardi Gras time)

Personally, I've always considered Zydeco to be the last word in music...

Love it. Back in the 90s my friends and I used to dance at all the cajun and zydeco events for miles around. Sadly, these live band events were killed off by the line dancing craze and never recovered.

Still, it was at a cajun night in Manchester in December 1996 that a fellow dancer gave me a flyer for Ceroc at Bowdon.

And the rest is history. At least I don't have to dance the man's part any more.
