Hmmm, so Minnie didn't say hi at Hipsters, or at Rebel Yell; very disappointed Mousey!:tears: Come grab me this week...

Hipsters on Friday was excellent, in my opinion, fab class, really enjoyed that, particularly the knee lean (although I think I nearly killed Stevie2Shoes a couple of times during the hour!)

Had some great dances and some great conversations. Was only planning on staying til 10.30 what with the early start the next day, but didn't get away til about 12.30! :sorry

Was great to meet Boomer; he looks nothing like a monkey (sorry, ape) so maybe that's why you missed him Minnie... He was very sweet actually and I hope he had a good time.

Sorry I didn't get to say hi Pammy - didn't realise who you were on Friday till just before I left - and Rebel Yell was so good, I was too busy dancing - and didn't get a chance during the workshops.

Unfortunately I am way for the next two/three weeks, so I will be dancing (if not too tired) around Yorkshire - this week and Wales next

What goes on in Newport (wales) or Rotherham on a Tuesday or Wednesday please (within 1 hours drive that is)

Hiya Minnie....

No idea about Rotherham. But from Newport, you can quite easily get to Mark and Jackie's class in Cardiff on a Tuesday night. See http://www.planetleroc.biz

Or, there's dances on every night of the week in Bristol, which is only a short trip over the Bridge. I think that the class in Kingswood is on a Wednesday (http://www.kingswoodleroc.com/)

I had a great night at Hipsters on Friday, great to have some space, and I didn't leave till we were thrown out well after 1 a.m. I did get some accusations from people I didn't dance with, but there were so many from far afield - Scotland, Yeovil, Bristol, Norwich, and others I haven't seen for ages that some of the regulars got "displaced" - sorry! And sorry to Minnie too, this also applies to Saturday night when we didn't manage a dance.

I did have one major problem on Friday, my dancing was mostly crap, but sometimes (?) it's like that.

I'll be interested in the final tally, but I reckon the numbers were about the same as on a Tuesday night, but with most of the tables out, there was much more space. Nigel and Nina's lesson was great, though they have made a couple of small changes since they last taught this routine about 3 years ago - my excuse for getting it wrong!

Re. Andy's "Hotshot" dancers, yes, some of them do come I'm sure, but I'm never really aware of them when I'm out on the floor (ie all the time). There is just a great cross section of dancers there, and it is great to see the success this has become, I think it is a long way from disappearing up it's own a**e. It isn't to everbody's taste (certainly not the inconsiderate smokers'!) but is anywhere.

But now that I know it's not too hard to get to, and that it also has beginners classes, it'll become my new reg plave to go....provided Nina doesn't scare me off (notthati'msayingNinaishorribleormeanornotniceoran ything!), but..well...my what a big hole I find myself in:sad:

Nina would be devastated if she thought she'd scared you off. And besides, if you said that she had scared you off you'd be risking a very dangerous event involving scary instruments of torture such as the death stare Nina gives Nigel when he gets it wrong:devil:

And "Pammywammy" are you sure that Tuesday Hipsters does have a beginners class? It didn't last time I went it only had quite a complicated intermediate class - but I haven't been for ages as I usually go on Wednesdays and that definitely does have a beginners lesson:D

It's a real shame for the rest of us, but Nina doesn't always go to Hipsters during the week.

If she does, don't let anything scare you off having a dance with her - especially not the hotshots queuing up. Despite her status as total goddess, she is exceptionally good at sensing the level of her partner, and dancing with you in a way that won't make you feel like a fool for not being up at her level.

She was responsible for me not giving up dancing completely about 18 months ago, so she can do no wrong in my eyes. Nigel literally takes his life in his hands when he takes the p*ss out of her on stage :D

It does not.

On Tuesdays, Amir teaches from 8 till shortly before 9, then Nigel teaches from 9 till about 9.40 (in theory :))

Amir takes relatively simple moves and teaches them with great emphasis on musicality and style - not easy but terrific to learn. Nigel doesn't focus quite so much on technique these days, but his classes are always really interesting, and quite hard enough.

On Wednesdays, Viktor teaches Ceroc-style beginners and intermediate classes.

Thanks mate, (opps, you too Andy:blush: ) I saw the ads on the door but forgot exactly when the classes were. As for Nina....yes, I've never knew 'you forgot to turn your phone off' could be said with such....chilling...I can't, I've gone cold:tears: Maybe Nigel will turn it off next time, me, I'm not even bringing mine.

P.S. When Nina berated me for my pitiful few dances, her brow may have beetled, but her eyes were smiling..I think...I hope.:what:

The phone went off, and Nina's exact words were (imagine the most ironic/sarcastic tone possible):

"That would be your mobile phone, then, wouldn't it, Nigel?"

After all the p*ss-taking of Nina that Nigel indulges in, I was punching the air, with an under-my-breath "yessss" :D

It's great entertainment...

Goodness me, only left this thread yesterday and already it's spawned out of control with all sorts of strange things. I'm going to Dorking tonight. David and Lily are teaching. So it should be a good night.

I'm hoping to go tomorrow, it depends on how the day goes and what time I finish my chores but mostly my wife's facial expression when I bring up the subject of a 2 hour 45 minute round trip to Ealing.

I've looked up 'grince' in my trusty dictionary (which I've found myself using a lot as the forum doesn't spell check). Grince wasn't there. Alphabetically it should come between 'grin' and 'grind'. So it must be grinning whilst grinding - Nigel is obviously the King of this - although I've noticed his grin is sometimes a bit strained looking with young, sexy partners in Lycra(tm)

If she got the best out of you, it was still you - set your aspirations no lower than that, and move on from there.

I just knew my shirt would get mentioned (mainly because Chris said it was going to be).

By a bizarre coincidence, The Tramp has already been in touch (at 1.15am!) to ask if I can get a gold shirt to him by Friday for him to wear in the Scottish Ceroc Champs:waycool:

But, as I knew I was going to get some stick I thought I should post a picture of tonight's shirt so everyone knows how bad it is.

What can I say... Andy walked into the room, and it brought Viktor's class to a halt. Those not present for the beginners class may not know that Viktor was wearing a very stylish dark pink shirt, specially for the first post-busk beginners lesson - but he changed out of it for the intermediates class. I was wondering why, but someone had obviously told him Andy was coming.

The photo, BTW, does it no justice at all. He's obviously mucked about with it in PhotoShop or summat - it was MUCH brighter than that. :really:

In the photo it looks positively sombre in comparison with the reality inflicted on us last night.

Chris

You're right about the photo not being accurate, all I did in Photoshop was lighten it a bit to optimise it for on-screen viewing. The shirt is like Baco Foil on acid. I think you probably need movement to show of its full sparklyness properly:wink: :waycool:

And talking of movement. The floor has been re-varnished at Ealing Town Hall and it's brilliant. Last night I could consistently do double spins in double time, on one foot without travelling and I pulled of my first double time quadruple spin on the spot :waycool: Then again it could have been the shirt effect:devil:

p.s. Also, the photo makes me look older and has given me a double-chin - which I was definitely temped to fix in Photoshop:tears:

Make sure you get at least three, Greg - you'll need to change that shirt during the evening.

And they'll need to be different colours, else, as with the McGregster, we'll all think he had the same shirt on for the whole night

I confess, I wore the same shirt for 2 hours. I had 2 spare, and very colourful, shirts in my bag. I usually change shirts when the one I'm wearing feels a bit moist. But, as I alluded to earlier, the glittery shirt was very cool and didn't seem to get wet - as ChrisA will witness as he felt my shirt at the end of the night. And more importantly, it kept me cool all night. I didn't even feel the need to roll the sleeves up. It's probably some space age fabric developed for the shuttle:waycool:

Perhaps I'll get some more for myself as I've only got two. I've already had orders from The Tramp, Boomer and Sheepman - maybe I'm overselling the pulling power of these shirts:devil:

For this reply Mr McGrester I forgive you your taste in shirts...sorry for routinely misspelling your name, the difference between ‘Mac’ and ‘Mc’ is beyond me:sorry . All I have to say regarding the number of posts I have created is ‘the biggest fool is the fool himself, or the fool who follows’ :nice: . I think it would be fair to say that being aware of how many posts a gentleman has created in a given period of time does, in itself, indicate a surplus of time, so there:yum: .

You’re the second person to say it looks like Salsa Angel, I think the lady herself was the other....could be mistaken, and it wouldn’t be the first time. Someone has also suggested Debster. I can safely say, she is neither – the avatar is actually a symbolic representation of the picture I have in my head at the beginning of every class/dance:sad: . Besides, while I know what Debster looks like, I wouldn’t know a Salsa Angel if she bit me on the ahhh never mind.

Hmmmm, ‘coming of age’ thing, the ‘crossing of a liminal boundary’...I quite like that. Mind you, I have to admit it seems more like a dog entering new territory ..you know, splashing its sent around:what: .

P.S. Its not actually too much time that causes me to bombard the forum, its Russian radio – I just can’t take more than 5 mins of Russian pop, it really is dire.

P.P.S Who's at Hipsters next wednesday, I think Tuesday is pretty much out, so will have to make the pilgrimage on Weds.

I've heard that the music is great at Gt Bookham. It would have been my first choice for Saturday but I'd need to buy a ticket and I'm still not sure about how easy it'll be to escape from the wedding reception:devil:

That's not to say there's anything second rate about Fleet it just that the drive home from Gt Bookham is shorter.

Too much, too much! My head is welling, but let me quantify.

It was only when I danced in Brighton for a year (1997) that the whole dance social scene for me opened up. (OK we had our regular little grouping in Ealing, and that still sticks together, but it was very different at the central London venues).
I was bowled over by the friendliness and hospitality of dancers in the Brighton area, and in that year made many friendships that I'm sure will last a lifetime, regardless of dancing.

Now hardly any of my dancing is in the centre of the city, the closest I get is going "out to the sticks" at Ealing. I never even go to the popular venue which is only about 15 minutes walk away.

Go on Wednesdays like I do. It's not as crowded, it's only modern jivers and Viktor teaches a great, stylish lesson which is nothing like you'll get at a regular Ceroc venue - by the end of it you'll look double jointed like Viktor:wink:

And some great dancers go too - although not as many as on Tuesdays. But far less 'Hotshots' who think they own the floor:devil:

Can I just say a big hello to all my friends at Hipsters. Last night was great; had some fabulours dances. Particularly a big hug to Chris, with whom I did a great dance to Bare Necessities; I don't know what stood out more, the dancing or the singing:wink: !! I also had two brilliant dances with DavidB which I really enjoyed .

Barry S. was there, on fine form too, Sheepy; lovely as ever, my good friends Mary and Tony and Mr anonomous who knows who he is even if nobody else does, who was also very good indeed . Hills was delighted with her personalised place mats too.

It was really good in there and I had a brilliant night; thank you all...

Just a quick thanks to everyone laura and I danced with last night at Hipsters. We had a great time and Laura had superb dances from Nigel, Viktor, Will, Tony and several others.

Tuesday may be reckoned to be the 'better' night but with Viktor teaching and Nigel 'taxi-ing' how can it be better :D sorry you werent there Pammy but maybe next time.

Just watching a Viktor beginners class provides so much inspiration. Great night.

Hi to Lory - danced with you before several times but now I know who you are...

Hi to Daisy, great to meet you, if only on the way out...

Mary, not scary, a terrific dance tonight. Thanks so much.

Minnie M, ditto, thanks to you too.

Bellissima, where were you? I was looking for you for ages... you just wait for Friday...

Sheepster (and Mrs Sheepster), excellent job on the bar, never much of a queue, and great that you weren't on the dance floor beating me to the pounce as you did with such annoying regularity over the weekend.

David, Lily, how come you guys seem so normal in real life??? Thanks for the help with the illusion spin, Lily. I have a horrible feeling that, slow learner that I am, I might need to ask you for yet another reminder. But I will get it, I promise.

See y'all soon...

Chris

PPS Boomster, you missed another goodun. Or did I miss you???
PPPS Shirtster, this is now the second time to my knowlege you've stopped the class and made the teacher comment. I'm hoping for something in an exceptionally luminous azure blue sometime soon. Please don't disappoint, I'm relying on you.

I had one my best nights last night even though I didn't have that many dances. One of the best atmospheres I've known down there for a while - is this due to the turnout from the provinces??

Wow, DavidB asked me to dance. I think I have just about managed to get over my nerves and shyness and now feel able to ask him more often (if he's willing to oblige that is!) . ChrisA - dancing with you is always dreamy. Love dancing with you Andy - it's always fun.

OK, gushing aside, really pleased to meet other forumites Lori and Daisy. And MinnieM, Tony hasn't been available to come out to play recently, so it's either Twyford on Friday or after our week hols.

Sorry Boomer, but it was. Was it the post RBs buzz, or the fact that I was working on the bar so only managed to interfere/"dance" :what: with about 6 women. There was "something in the air", a real special night, plus a tad more space than last week. Maybe it was just me, but Mrs. Sheepman was also raving, and most impressed after her first ever dance with the McGregster. I hope all those that travelled from afar enjoyed it as much (Lesley, Jill and co.). So I'm afraid you, Pammy and Helen missed out. Nigel's quickfire lesson was on the tough to "no chance" side for some people, but it is always good to have a challenge!

I wasn't going to... I've used up all my nerve for the next decade or two I reckon.

Oh god, I just hope I did the right thing. Three consecutive encounters, identical, er, aroma in each case, confirmation from a lady who'd obviously danced with him... and I'm still bricking it hoping I haven't made an awful mistake. :what: :what: :what:

Come on ChrisA. I didn't get the cryptic clue.

Last night as Hipsters was very good. Last night was packed with people who wanted to keep the Rockbottoms vibe going just a bit longer. There were far more women I wanted to dance with than there were tracks to dance to so I was quite happy at the end of the night:D

COMMENCE RANT

I hadn't been for many months on a Tuesday because they play Lindy music and I don't do Lindy. That was still the same:tears: But it was still a great night with plenty of good tracks between the time wasted waiting for the Lindy stuff to finish - one track in particular was much, much too fast for proper modern jive - you could dance to it but it was no fun - I don't want to travel 160 miles on a week night to listen to Lindy music or dance badly to it.

I think I'll stick to Wednesdays because I do Modern Jive. I don't do Lindy, I think the two don't mix, the music is different the phrasing is different and Lindy Hoppers take up too much space and kick you in the shins if you get too close. Why can't they have their own music in a different room or even their own night? The only problem with not going on Tuesdays is that I'll miss the brilliant lessons from Amir and Nigel.

Come on guys, the Lindy people would love their own night with their own music and so would modern jivers. You've got a top DJ a great venue with top dancers. If it was in two rooms people that do both styles would have a choice and people that don't wouldn't have their night interrupted by difficult to enjoy music. Of course, I could be in the minority as Tuesday is busier than Wednesday.

I am really stunned by this view. I'm not a Lindy dancer either, but there is very little music that is really undanceable as a jiver IMHO. And although it's harder, there's just as much interpretive stuff to do with the fast stuff (not that I have that aspect at all sorted yet). And, on the few occasions several are played in succession, by the time a couple of fast ones have been played, enough people have gone to have a rest for those that haven't gone into cardiac arrest to have a bit more room :D

I think the music on Tuesdays is the best out of all the venues I've been to, as much because there's a good sprinkling of swing as well as the rest - and for the few tracks where the jivers all depart to the sides cos it's too fast - or just too Lindyish - it's a real pleasure to watch the few really good Lindy dancers proving to me that I should wait till my next lifetime to give it a serious try.

I reckon the Lindy influence contributes a lot to the atmosphere, whether Lindy is being danced to a given track or not.

I'm pretty much with Chris on the music thing, though there are some of the swing tracks that I'm beginning to tire of due to overplaying. A few people have said to me that they love doing the Lindy lessons with Andy and Rena, but they're much happier doing jive freestyle, so if it was a separate venue for the Lindy, it could be too quiet?

So to Chris' act of heroism, there was a guy who Chris had noticed for the third time was polluting the area with his BO, (and that's without dancing with him!) Not someone Chris knew, but he took this guy to one side, and gave him the low down. That takes some nerve in my book, and I believe the reaction was favourable.

Have to say (without having been to Hipsters for a long time now (well, it is 500 miles away :tears: )), that I'd be with Chris and Sheepy on this one. I've been on a Tuesday plenty of times, and I've heard Jon B's sets far more often. And I always (mostly) liked the music that he plays. I'd reckon that there are probably only a few tracks on the night that are that fast. But it's the same as always, if you don't like just a couple of tracks on an evening, then you're doing pretty well.

I've heard this complaint before from a few people - but they are usually down the beginner intermediate end of the dance scale, or just have a marked preference for the more pop type stuff. Given that you are neither Andy, I'm a little surprised that you feel this way.

And as you said yourself, there is a marked difference in the numbers of people turning up for the freestyle on Tuesdays, to the numbers turning up on Wednesdays......

hear hear  I totally agree  Modern Jive is still my first love, but I like dancing to swing music. My Lindy only goes as far as a Lindy circle and and a swing-out - can't stand the choerographed bits, it has got to be lead and follow (the only time I will let a man have total control)

The 'GOOD' lindy dancers are considerate dancers, and anyway most of them are by the stage so they don't get in our way

Still don't feel all that heroic.. :(

I was as gentle as I possibly could, very apologetic for having to say something, said that there was no easy way to say it, but I'd want to be given the feedback if it had been me.

He was a bit stunned, I think, but didn't react unpleasantly in any way.

It was pretty scary, I have to admit.

I hope to god I got the right bloke tho... three consecutive, identical pongs when dancing next to him on different occasions(it was so bad I had to move myself & partner away, and even when he was dancing, the area around where he'd been sitting was ghastly as well ), and confirmation from a lady ("oh yes, he's awful") made me as confident as I could be... and I'd never have had the balls without the recent threads.

I hope he's not hanging out here...

Don't get me wrong, there are loads of swing tracks that I love too. But I still say Lindy and Modern Jive don't belong in the same room. And Lory has a pain in the next to prove it - case proven, I think. Let's play the Lindy in another room and they can kick and elbow each other to fast tracks all night. We can then enjoy JB looking after the modern jivers as only he knows how.

The alternative would be to do what they used to do at ice-skating when they cleared the floor for the speed skaters. JB could announce 'Modern Jivers without shin pads, crash helmets and flack jackets please clear the floor for 10 minutes of Lindy Hop'

BTW I met Lory for the first time last night. She's absolutely fantastic, double spins in double time and asks for sexy moves - what more could a man want:devil:

No. Considerate/careful and inconsiderate/careless dancers don't belong in the same room. I don't see Nigel crashing into anyone, for example, and he gets about a bit, even on a crowded dance floor.

I've been crunched by far more jivers than Lindiers at H on a Tuesday.

Re Lory: totally agree. One day hopefully I won't be too shy for the sexy moves...

And thanks for your support too.

JB could announce 'Modern Jivers without shin pads, crash helmets and flack jackets please clear the floor for 10 minutes of Lindy Hop':devil:Sorry Andy. But I don't agree with this either. There's plenty of people out there doing Modern Jive who have no idea of the space issues, and who blunder around a dance floor. It's not just the Lindy Hoppers who do this (although, I do agree that there are some very bad ones of them too). Didn't I read somewhere that even Lily managed to clock someone the other night?

There's also plenty of tracks that are Jive only that are very fast, and possibly dangerous in a room full of people with no consideration for other dancers....

Had some great dances in there last night with loads of my fave's; Tony of course (always top of the list ), Chris (that was a really good one I thought), the lovely Ed, David B who is always fantastic even if he did have an injured foot, Roger Chin to All That Jazz, which is one of my favourite songs, Tatties, the colour-coordinated Andy M. Peter who I hardly ever get to dance with; a last dance with Dave who won the aerials last year at B.B. who did some really great drops, plus many more; in short, a great evening...

Where was Minnie M though? I also want to know where Lily gets her fab trousers. I look at every one of her outfits and think wow! Those trousers last night were brilliant!

Me too - I've never felt actually worried on the Wed Hipsters floor before, actually feeling I need to keep an eye on what another couple is doing for my own and my partner's safety. And it was quite inhibiting for a junior like myself. And when I get inhibited, I just start dancing crappily, and have a rotten time. :tears: :tears: :tears:

Come on, Andy, mate - I know you're a miles better dancer than I'll ever be, I know you can do fab stuff at the drop of a hat, and I know how it's easy to get a bit carried away if you're having a nice dance with someone.

Just a thought, you may find the music too swingy and fast at Gt Bookham on Saturday too, as it tends to have a similar mix as Hipsters, (but a very different playlist). Probably more bluesy stuff too, so maybe that will compensate?

Let's not beat about the bush. I love BOTH Hipsters nights - and so must you Minnie M otherwise you wouldn't drive 180 miles for either of them. I have a preference for Wednesdays which makes the Tuesdays my second favourite class ahead of dozens of others I go to. Tuesdays are worth going to for the lessons alone, then when you add the fantastic dancers it's great. The modern jive selection from JB is great - and I'm sure the Lindy Hoppers like his Lindy music too. I prefer Wednesdays because the teaching is just as good, I like Roger Chin's music just as much but there's no Lindy:D (apart from what I do accidentally - oops!). Also, I think that having beginners on Wednesdays makes for a more balanced class. It gives me the chance to do my share of Taxi work which I think is good for the soul.

I'll do it. I've told this story to loads of beginners anyway. I first started dancing in March '97. I came along with my friend David. David clicked with the dancing straight away (and, at the age of 39 he also clicked with a lovely 25 year old dancer). I wasn't even aware of just how bad I was. I could remember more moves than David, but I danced all of them off the beat (in my defence, I'd been taught at ballroom to dance on the 't' of the 'b'ea't' rather than the 'b' like we do at modern jive). It took me ages to realise there was anything at all wrong with my dancing. I have a video of myself dancing in the October 97 LeJive Championships and I was total rubbish. The Brighton girls were so nice at the time nobody said a word to me. Years later Minnie M told me that all the girls thought David would be a great dancer (he's taller and much better looking than me too) and that I'd never ever get it:tears:

One embarrassing memory I have is of popping into a dance after a meal with David on his 40th birthday. We had a couple of muggles with us. David and I stayed for about 15 minutes and had a few dances. In the car on the way home our muggle friend, Ann, waxed long and lyrical about David's fantastic dancing. Then, after a long pause she said '...and, Andy, you've got a nice smile'.:tears:

It is a shame that some people dancing modern Jive complain about Hipsters on a Tuesday. The problem with Tuesdays is not that there are Lindy Hoppers there. (I think alot can be gained by learning what appeals to you and adding it to your modern Jive.)
The problem with Tuesdays is that it is so crowded.

Wednesdays are great for the extra floorspace which is not that common in modern Jive circles. The balance of Lindy to Ceroc has tipped towards Ceroc in the last few months which, if continues too much, would be so sad for Tuesdays.

And yes what was going on with the volume last night.

Please don't get me wrong. I'm complaining that some of the music that JB plays on a Tuesday is ONLY suitable for Lindy Hop. If you're having a mixed night I think the music should be suitable for both. And IMHO some of the music played this Tuesday wasn't. There was one track in particular. One of my regular partners asked me to dance to it. We started dancing and it was too fast so I stopped and said 'let's wait for the next track'. So she asked 2 other guys near me and they also said 'no' as it was too fast - so it wasn't just me. There's plenty of swing that's suitable for both styles of dance and I think that's what we should be hearing at Hipsters on a Tuesday.

Being struck by accident from an inconsiderate dancer isn't exclusive to Lindy or anything else. It is the dancer not the form of dancing.

That Greg is a cheap and obvious attempt at getting me to say "I'll grasp you if you're not careful"... Don't know if I could though, if we ever grince I fall asleep don't I?

Anyway, being that I couldn't grasp it, I'll say it anyway, shall I? Oh and don't you dare say ewe don't understand or I'll have your squins (ans sequins) as well!!!

(Oh sorry Pammy aren't you still? Have I let another secret out!) I got into it because of the music, the band "The Deep Sea Jivers", the leader Pete Thomas (of whom Billy Bragg wrote "Someone ought to erect a monument to Pete Thomas for services to rock music"). They played what we called "Jump Jive" following on from Joe Jackson, who resurrected stuff from Louis Jordan, Louis Prima (Just A Gigolo), Cab Calloway etc. I would consider very little of this stuff to be "typical" Lindy, even though Lindy developed along with these bands, I can't really say what is "typical" being fast isn't sufficient. So I think we need Andy to enlighten us?

So Lory, next time Jon plays something impossibly (?) fast, please come and grab me and let's see what happens. I promise it won't be Lindy, 'cos I've forgotten all that.

I've got time now to give this my full attention. As they say, I'm sorry my earlier letter was so long, I didn't have the time to write a short one. I've been distracted by Her Majestys Customs and Excise and VAT. I asked Pammy for the day off posting but she said it was out of the question.

Now that Minnie M has posted her recollection of events it's jogged my memory. When she had that talk with me I'd already been through the process once. I'd worked out I wasn't in the right place on the beat and thought (wrongly) that I'd fixed it. Once I'd been put straight by Minnie M (who had a real name at the time) I went to many, many more classes with different teachers, did workshops and spent ages watching competition videos. I wasn't obsessed, I still slept a few hours a night! And, a year or so later I'd finally found that place, the sweet spot in the beat where it all happens. And THAT is when Minnie M started using me as an example to other guys who were having problems getting started.

At every class I go to (with the possible exception of Hipsters on a Tuesday) I see guys who are either in the wrong place on the beat or can't hear it at all. What we need is an army of Minnie Ms to have a quiet word in their ears.

Well I probably will, but H is a dream compared with Fulham tonight.

It wasn't the music. Quite a bit of it was quite nice, if a little poppy at times. But the mad b**gers that were dancing there...

It was packed, like H is on Tues. There was some lunatic doing persistent travelling polka type things, charging about cutting a swathe, there was that bloke that used to do aerials all the time in the corner at Hammersmith doing them again in the middle of the space in front of the stage - bloody dangerous, and there were dippers and droppers all over the place.

Kin mayhem, I tell you.

I managed to find a little space and have about four or five nice dances without injury to myself or partners, but the rest was pants.

Quite good really, I shall revert to my former practice of establishing Thursday night as my personal sabbath.

:tears: Like ChrisA I tried Fulham last night. Sometimes being popular is not a good thing. I know this subject has been talked about for a long time but could the people of influence get the teachers on stage to either mention something or get the teachers to teach something of good practice. Mind you I think some of those who offend only come for the freestyle and not the lessons.

My definition of a good dance was leading my partners off at the end of a dance knowing they had been unharmed by some of the people around.

One last big gripe but I have noticed it more. Why do some people decide to have a chat with friends in the middle of a dancefloor. And I don't just mean on the edge. Actually in the place where they finished dancing their last track.

So stop the music, get the teacher or venue organiser on the stage with a mike - and put out a firm request for more considerate dancing and no bloody aerials.

Who knows - after the initial shock, they might even get a round of applause.

I despair, though. Does anyone remember the excellent class Nigel did at Hipsters ages ago, where he focused on dancing close, small and in a slot, when it's busy (as opposed to when it's fast)? He taught (one step at a time) the art of looking into the space you're intending to occupy before bunging yourself or partner into it. Then he got everyone in the (fairly busy) class to squash up into a third of the hall or less, and actually put into practice.

Did it make any difference later in freestyle? I'll leave you to guess.

Strange but as ones dancing progresses and you learn to take better care this topic becomes more important. I am finding it easier to use a small amount of space and must confess that yes I did take up too much room.

Last night I found it easier to lead and contain what my partner and I were dancing. At one point though I opened up a space checked my blind spot for safety then looked back at my partner to smile. We then turned into the next more about a quarter of a second later someone was dancing backwards into the space with no care in the world. Fortunately our move was aborted and ended up styling it out with a blues move.

That repeated throughout the night. It sometimes amazes me that there is not a longer injury list at the end of an evening.

You weren't on my offenders list, Ed :nice:

It's not so much about how much space you take up, as when and where, and how you take it. There are always moments when some space opens up, and it's possible to make use of it - providing you can abort smoothly if necessary. I find this very hard sometimes.

DavidB's point a few days ago about being the only one who can know when the space occupied by one's partner will become available was also most illuminating, I thought.

Totally agree with everything said.

Especially the talking thing - double error 1. In the way 2. Why aren't they dancing?

I think it's up to the person taking the lesson to actively police this - but who's brave enough? Apart from 'nerves of steel' ChrisA?

Just a gigolo - For me it's a nice tempo jive with plenty of musical interest. Would the Lindy dancers dance Lindy to it? Not sure, almost think they might...

Wade in the water - jive. Absolutely luscious track. Jive but with a fast blues feel.

It does take alot out your dancing when your main aim is prevention and not how well you can dance with your partner.

Nigel does this all the time even if there's nobody within 100 yards. Watch him, half the time he's got his partners thigh held against his like a dog on heat - but they go back for more so maybe I'll try it:devil:

One teacher I know of does this so much with newbies the move was nicknamed 'the first-night blonde'.

p.s. Watch Nigel's facial expressions while doing this move they're always most entertaining:wink:

As far as I categorize, I call this, um, "Jazz". Almost too syncopated for Jive - I find it best to do most of the accents almost as (quasi-partnered) solo dancing. (Oh all right, what I mean is I just stand there and let the woman do her stuff :tears: ).

Just a gigolo - For me it's a nice tempo jive with plenty of musical interest. Would the Lindy dancers dance Lindy to it? Not sure, almost think they might... I'd say this has quite a Lindy feel, but it's very compatible with Jive - in the sweet spot for both dances.

Wade in the water - jive. Absolutely luscious track. Jive but with a fast blues feel.More blues than jive to me - I think that's more a terror of doing the "jive bounce" thing to it than anything else.

The boss (the braxtons)
Teardrops from my eyes (jules holland)
Ice Cream ManI don't know these either. Found snippets on the net for "The Boss" (Diana Ross) & "Ice Cream Man" and they don't sound at all Lindy to me.

I don't know the names of any of the faster swing tracks so I can't give _any_ Lindy examples.
I guess the one most people would know is "Zoot Suit Riot" (aka "Grapefruit Diet" when JB is DJ'ing...)

At the end of the day, I think it is more about speed than anything else. But I think the styles can also clash a bit. If you look at the fastest popular Jive songs, they usually have quite strong phrasing, which means that every 8 beats or so, you have a slightly larger window to catch breath (catch up!) and do the "pull-push" stepback. With a lot of Lindy tracks at the same speed I'm struggling to find "breathing spots".

I think most agreed the toughest track to jive to in the JiveMasters heats was "I'm so excited" - jive not Lindy. But 184bpm, and a very very unrelenting beat.

As a novice Lindy dancer, I prefer the 'jive/swing' music, and then follow my leader's style. That is why Hipsters is such a great night as the music (well most of it) follows both styles. If you notice the Lindy dancers very rarely dance Lindy to very fast music these days as it is BALBOA now - it is the 'IN' dance for most of the Lindy dancers, so they welcome fast music to practice

Man after my own heart. I've always made my freestyles an Airstep free zone. I used to have to put up flyers stating such ... but now an announcement form stage usual does the trick. Over the last year I've had to intercept 3 dancers doing airsteps and asked them very nicely if they wouldn't mind not doing them ... and all three have accepted my request in good grace:grin:

Its not always been that way though and as there are inconsistencies in the attitude to 'dangerous dancing' even within Blitz, its sometimes a bit hard to enforce. Of course its even worse when there are some non-Blitz teachers in the area actively teaching dangerous dancing moves:reallymad :reallymad

Am looking forward to that as well as the women I normally get to dance with.

I'm sure there are great dancers going to both - it's just that a couple of them have twisted my arm to get me out to Twyford this time round.

It didn't need much twisting, I have to say

I agree with all of the above but thought I'd point out that this is the Hipsters thread and I've not seen anyone doing dangerous air-steps there - although the way some of those Lindy Hoppers try to kick you in the shins on the crowded Tuesdays I sometimes wish people did selective decapitating air-steps:devil:

Fair point ... beeing heraing rumours anout a couple of 'Skippies' in the area ... i.e. people who seem to bounce up and down and around at vast speed .... due to the fcat that the beat of the music appears to pay no part in their dancing, its hard to predict where they will collide with you next.

Having said all that, I was watching the floor at the last few events I've been at, and on the whole I saw a lot of consideration. Saw a few coliisions but all partiea showed good grace. Maybe its is only a very small minorty of dancers who are a menace.

From what it says in the JumpnJive newsletter (what do you mean you don't get it?????   ):

Fri 7th is on

Tues 11th is off

Wed 12th is on

So only closed on Tue 11th.

So now I'm confused. Hipsters is obviously closed on Tuesday 11th.

Is it open on Wednesday 12th?

According to the website at www.hipstersjive.co.uk the 'Big Fat Friday Freestlye' the first Friday of the month. So what was last Friday - which was the LAST Friday of the month:confused:

Is the 'Big Fat Friday Freestyle' on this Friday 7th November - which is the first Friday of the month.

I ask for clarification purposes. I'm not certain which night I will be going - but I'd like to be sure it'll be open when I've driven 80 miles to get there.

p.s. ChrisA is obviously one minute ahead of me and was answering my questions as I was typing them. If I ask what next weeks lottery numbers are going to be could he repeat the feat - if we win we can open our own venue, choose our own music and have people carried of in straight-jackets for standing still chatting in the middle of a busy dance floor:devil:

I think you'll find that we've been pretty much on-topic (apart from a slight fantasy detour for 2 postings). We've had an enlightening debate about when Hipsters is and isn't on. And we've posted pictures of ourselves at various activities. We even met up on Saturday night at Great Bookham - which was great.

While you've had the whole weekend off, we've popped in to do a bit of overtime so we can all start the week knowing what's happening. Where were you? Probably out glittering glamourously somewhere while there's frivilous work to be done:wink:

Since the Phat Phreestyle is only monthly, I might have to make it 3 WCS out of 4.

A map would make it too complicated. Walk out of the station to the road, turn left (south), at the roundabout turn right, Dorking halls is about 2-300 yards along that road on the left - probably about a 10 to 15 minute walk.

I have a meeting that night so I might not be able to make it. On the other hand, I'm Chairing this meeting so matters will be resolved with dispatch (and aplomb)

Dorking Halls is VERY easy to get to by road - it is on the A25 where the A24 & the A25 cross (roundabout) and there is a sign post there pointing to Dorking Halls

It is about 100yds up on the left side and parking is just before it by behind the sports Centre which is next door.

It is a really great hall with a good dance floor AND water on tap !

Just for a change, had a terrible night tonight. :tears:

I wish I understood what happens - the classes were ok... I was mostly ok in Amir's (unusual), and Nigel's was easy for a change. I'd slept and eaten well, and had been looking forward to it all day.

But it just went to pieces during freestyle.

There were a couple of dances that were really just workouts - for a change it was a guy having to cope with yankers :(, and my injured shoulder - that's been recovering nicely over the last few months - got some nasty wrenches...

... and then I just _could_ not get back into the groove :(

La Bellissima and Lory were oases in the otherwise arid and barren desert, apologies to Pammy and Helen (though they were both lovely) for not doing them any justice at all... and when I finally got to dance with Lily I was so bad I should really have just found a hole to crawl into instead. Sorry, at least it doesn't get any worse than that :(

I'm now finishing off a bottle of wine while I wind down.

Dance with me tomorrow at your peril, girls.  :tears:

I couldn't even tell anyone if i actually danced with him or not! is this a game Boomer, how long you can stay inconito? AGGGGGGHHH

BUT I had some lovely dances with Greg, chris A, Roger, David and Mikey, so that made up for it!

It was nice this evening, room to move!

ChrisA, we all have off nights. It's how we appreciate the 'on' nights:D

Boomster, if you're going back to basics come to Dartford on Thursday night, I'll be there, Roger Chin will be DJ, plus loads of Dartford women who are easily pleased...

ChrisA, do what I do, brighten up your wardrobe. It doesn't matter if you're good or bad so long as you're looking good - and good means glittery.

And on the subject of glittery, was the Boomster wearing his new shirt?

Sorry I couldn't make it tonight, chaired a lovely debate on health, another on affordable housing and some other stuff - lost the will to live twice, thought about you guys having a great time frequently. Probably seemed quite distracted but survived the night:tears:

And now I have to tell you that I can't come on Wednesday because there's a firework party at my daughter's prep:tears: :tears:

I am currently working on a master plan to build a tunnel from Worthing to Ealing by Friday - see you there. Please don't comment about the soil I'm shaking down my trousers to fool the guards:confused:

The funny thing is, no matter how badly I dance, it is NEVER worse than not dancing.

Not dancing is the very worst. The worst, the worst, the worst.

It's bad. BAD BAAAAAAAAAAAAD.

b-----aaaaaaaaaa------ddddddd. Bad.

Did I say it was bad? Well it is. Bad.

If you say you can't do something a thousand times, does that make it any easier?

If you sit on a chair, in what sense do you suppose it benefits your dancing..?????

I learnt a few things tonight, despite being a crappier thing than the very crappiest thing on international "let's celebrate crapsters" day. Those things will help me in the future. For now, I feel baaaaaaaaaaaaad, but that will pass, and soon I will be better.

So much to write - so little time (have to head off to some early-morning training).

I had the best time last night. Started off the evening in a foul mood and, having got to Ealing, was on the verge of going home without dancing at all. But I reckoned, as ChrisA wisely says, not dancing would leave me feeling even worse. And it turned out to be a fantastic night - I had some wonderful dances with men I rarely see around (they were unaccountably, and luckily for me, all there last night by coincidence). ChrisA - you were just gorgeous as ever. Sorry to hear you were having an off night  Boomer - sorry I missed my dance with you. Those pesky tube timetables! :tears: And Punkfish (Anthony) - how great to see you and have a few dances. And the lovely Elliot - my white knight.

The classes were pretty good - Nigel's class had one particular tricky bit in it which I'd say around a third of the men I danced with were getting wrong - I tried to help out, but realised maybe it's better not to interfere. Sometimes the men don't take it very well

Oh well, training calls. No Hipsters tonight for me :tears: :tears: But next week for sure!

I had a fun evening; someone told me I looked sexy; this could be classed as either a good thing I looked sexy  or a bad thing normally I don't :tears:

Had some great dances; Anthony (PunkFish) was fab; thanks belle divissima for the tip-off, David B was as fab as ever and I really enjoyed the dances I had with him, Mystery Man was looking good in his t-shirt; wow with arms like that they need showing off, Chris (looking fine in black), Sheepy being as silly as ever and Boo who was feeling deflated by a rotten hot-shot.

I have left many an evening feeling deflated by hot-shots. There are some that I love dancing with who have NEVER asked me despite the fact I've actually danced with them probably dozens and dozens of times, which is a shame. Don't let it get to you; I see it as a reflection on them being very shallow people despite being good dancers.

Anyway, we all love you

In all seriousness, I would like to put this on the record for anybody who is unfamiliar with Hipsters and is considering going.

Hipsters does, without a doubt have some of the nicest, friendliest dancers I have met at any venue (I haven't been to many, but have been to enough). The atmosphere there is relaxed and easy going, with some truely Phat music  . Please do not be put off by the recent postings regarding 'Hotshots' (not having a moan guys! Blimey, I'm the guilty party today:sorry: ). They - 'Hotshots' - it would seem, are to be found at all venues. If you're thinking of going, then go, and look out for Mr Sparkle, Mr Black, Ms Glitter, Mr Beer, the Blond Giggla, Ms Divi (sorry  ) a mouse and a foxylady...who is telling off Mr Beer .

I win the 'lovey darling' award today :waycool:

And Dr Death! How could I miss him!?! Mind you, not sure if he goes Hippies, when he's not swaning around the world spreading mayhem and destruction.

I'd second that - it's my favourite London venue and in my limited experience (as a visitor) I thought it had more good dancers, nice people, and less poseurs than most London venues (though Fulham and Chiswick are pretty nice too).

Casbah gets a lot of posh 'serious dance' types who dance by the stage but I've found them ok if you are in the mood for that type of in-your-face evening and quite friendly (still my fave Ceroc venue).

I win the 'lovey darling' award today :waycool:

but remember those hotshots are just going through a phase - I'm sure you beautifully clever, resourceful and gorgeous London ladies can charm them into behaving eventually:wink:

- ditto - (well almost) I was feeling very average rather than terrible, despite dancing with some wonderful partners who insisted I wasn't that bad. My theory is that it's still the RBs hangover, it always takes me a while to settle down after such a good weekender. I'm also having trouble on that new floor, which has gone from super slippy and nice, to ultra sticky.

There again there were some highlights, remembering a move from Beach Boogie that I always struggle with, and Helen executed it perfectly, great dances with Lory and Foxylady, Lily stunning as ever, even though we must have picked the busiest spot on the floor, Pammy sending my heartrate rocketing (or was that the 200bpm music? )

Hmmm - maybe it wasn't so bad after all.

Actually, I had my reasons for naming H and D... and they are nothing to do with A-lists. It's just that they are better known at this present moment for their comp activity, so might be better placed to sucker the hotshots in.

For all I know, L, L and you might have been in recent comps - but as you know I tend to be pretty ignorant of what goes on on the comp circuit. I only know about H cos she was cited at Hipsters recently, and about D cos she was in Oz and reported back here.

We found with our team cabaret t-shirts (not the MEGA-SPARKLY outfits we actually wore for the performance but just plain black with enigmatic logo worn out social dancing) that loads of people asked about the logo and what it meant. A bit of mystery hooks 'em, then reels 'em in!:waycool:

Absolutely. People often ask about my Rock Bottoms shirt...

One girl asked me if I had a rock-hard bottom. :really: :really:

Unfortunately she said it so quietly (this was during the class) that I didn't quite hear it properly and had to ask her to say again. She then became a bit shy, and by the time I realised what she'd said I failed completely to have a cool answer ready :(

I had to make do with "naturally".

Doh...

Does anybody know if its possible to shower at Hipsters? I'm asking becasue I can't face the train/tube journey there again tonight, and would rather cycle (90mins by LT to go 10 miles is just pathetic). Have a good 'un there tonight, I'm off to the canteen

I'm rather afraid that even if it is possible to shower, the showers will be in an even worse state than the toilets! :what: I must admit I haven't seen any shower facilities (in my extensive recce of the building).

Had a great time tonight. Those who had to put up with me moaning about how awful I was yesterday, will hopefully be relieved that I'm back from the brink :). I'm starting to enjoy Wednesdays more than Tuesdays, in fact - mostly because of the space.

Thanks Lily, for putting up with me for two whole dances - really enjoyed them.

Missed Minnie, and in fact quite a few of the South Coast Crowd. Where were you all?

Enjoyed Roger's music, too. Not as swingy as JB's sets, but some unusual tracks - including a couple of techno numbers that I really enjoyed.

I also dragged along a fairly recent beginner from Twickenham Ceroc, and she had a good night too. She had a dance with Nigel towards the end, which was a bit more than she was expecting, I suspect... but she looked like she was doing fine, and he was very complimentary about her afterwards (and if you're reading this, M, it's time you registered here and introduced yourself :D :D)

Oh yes, and I think I have a plan for Friday... I'm going to go to David & Lily's WCS beginners class and then, if I'm too scared to stay, belt up the M3 to Ealing for the freestyle. I'm totally maxed out on classes, so I don't mind missing the cabaret thing Nigel and Nina are doing. Though I will miss the opportunity she'll no doubt take to give him the death stare... wasn't he awful to her yesterday....

Anyway, just winding down with a glass of red. See y'all tomorrow.

There are still fantastic dancers there, a brilliant teacher, fab music and the same awesome venue - with space

Its not fair, you hunt around for favourite teachers and venues then, when you find them, you discover that they’re on the same day  Wednesdays at Hippies sounds great - space, music, Victor etc...3 hour round trip. Then you have the canteen – Cliff, atmosphere, space to dance, lovely dancers, 70 minute round trip...on a Wednesday  . Sometimes, life just isn’t fair.

Had a great evening at the canteen, I'm back on the good foot  Thanks for a fab dance foxy, maybe next time I'll inquire about a second one :nice:

Now that is the best answer so far  I'm not joking. The travel time itself isn’t the problem, its the psychological aspect i.e. 90 minutes to travel 10 bloody miles! Dorking next Tuesday is far further than Ealing, but will actually take me, all-in-all 20 mins less to and from. That I’m afraid is the problem, I hate travelling in London

Hackney Downs, where the trains and buses go nowhere soon  Have to tube to Liverpool Street, then train home. Archway! I forgot to say that it is a joy to have room to move around on a Wednesday. Weird but if that was a Ceroc venue with that amount of people at a venue then the reaction I think would be alot different.

On a serious note please be careful with your belongings. Right at the end of the night a set of car keys were taken. Fortunately the car had not been taken yet. The were some out of place people hanging around the entrance to the hall and saw an opportunity to take advantage. I know that it is that time of year for certain crime to increase. We must remember to be that extra bit careful.

Last night was great - as Pammy says. Started off badly with Daisy going down after a nasty clash with a neighbouring dancer. Thank heaven you were OK, Daisy. Hope the bump isn't too bad this morning

Things improved from there - I admired (from afar - couldn't get close enough to grab a dance) the 'sters shirt modelled by the suave McGregster. I had two lovely dances with Boomer and other great dances with many others (including, of course, the sparkling TwK - my only hope!).

Lowlight was having to turn down the wonderful ChrisA for a dance 'cos we had to dash for our train. Sorry, Chris :tears: However, it may have been a lucky escape - I had committed one of the cardinal sins of partner dancing and eaten garlic (in my hummus) before coming out - sorry Boomer:what: :sorry

Back on the subject of space though. There seemed to be a disregard for fellow dancers out there despite Viktor stopping the music and making a safety announcement.

Not amused! Spent most of my night concentrating on everyone else and not the woman I was dancing with.

Thank you to everyone I danced with last night though.

Though it had some low points... one of my fave partners (I don't think she hangs out here.. ) accused me of ogling someone else while dancing with her :really: :what: as if I would, or even could (she's a terrific dancer), when all I was doing was trying to avoid a couple of dangerous dippers, and then to cap it all Divissima turned me down :tears: :tears: :tears: cos she and TwK were leaving. :what: :what: - it wasn't even nearly the end.

High points: Mary's back with us, ATJ with the Pamster, a beginner I encouraged to come a couple of weeks ago is still coming, another failure to disgrace myself with Lily, though it was a close call at the beginning, one of my dances with Helen, and managing to keep Sue McG injury free during our dance...

We had to leave because we had to get to Marylebone, in order to catch a train to Beaconsfield. Since Toby started working in London, we can't rely on his car (cos he'd need to rush home to Beako, then drive back in again in order to drive home again). It means we can't really stay to the end. Come on Lory, now you're seeing into the future how long will it take me to become Lily? I've nearly got the free arm thing and the back-step hip&arm out thing too. I danced to All that Jazz with Lily last night, which was fantastic. We looked almost like twins. Hmmm, let me think, hair grows on average 1/2inch a month = six inches a year.... I'd say Lily's hair is at least 3ft long so maybe in 6 years (if you havent gone bald in the mean time) you might be somewhere on the right track!

All Joking aside, I do spook my self sometimes! Cackle cackle!

I have a feeling that should the need arise, Lily (like most women), could go in for the chop herself without the need for a pair of sheers.

I'll let her have one of my jars shall I?

Hi everyone......this is 'Ooops a Daisy' here. Thankyou all for you concern. I'm fine I think!

Fancy getting K Od on the dance floor! I think I must be suffering a mild concussion but apart from that I still know my name and what day it is.

Ray claims to be disappointed he can't cash in my life insurance policy yet but from what I here he was all concern last night so I think he's just winding me up.

Thanks for all my lovely dances guys....especially Ed, Will, Viktor, Clay, John L, David andToby (despite the accident). Sorry to have missed a dance with you Chris....next time please. Having had so many fantastic men to dance with how could it possibly be anything other than a great night.....oh and it was free!

I've already taken remedial action. To distract Lily with caring for her sick husband I've spiked DavidB's drinks with a secret drug used by South American head shrinkers. The symptoms are quite flu-like and should last just long enough for Lily to forget my plans - then I will POUNCE and.. ...SNIP, it's all over! I'll have a wig made from the 2 foot 11 3/4 inches of hair I've acquired and fully become Lily. I just need a few essential pieces of information like how David takes his Horlicks...

Certifiable. I did actually use the phrase ‘real-life’ on this thread once :what: Oh the sweet pangs of lost innocence. Anyway, youcan’t have her hair, and she can’t cut it, the hair-lashing she gives me during a dance is equal to the tongue-lashing she give me at the end of a dance...just wouldn’t be Lily without either.

When I'm Lily I'll provide all of the above services plus free beer.

How's that for an election pledge.

Vote McGregster for the New Lily, you know it makes (non) sense.

Tight pony tails can be a bit deadly, but I think loose long hair is fantastic (swooshes the floor during laybacks and swaybacks as the lady cascades back then dramatically swoosh against a man's face as the lady comes up and flicks her head)

This is no joke - I did once step on someone's hair at a Ceroc night. Fortunately for the lady I managed to move my feet really quickly. But I don't think the man who dropped her even noticed.

Also I know how much care most ladies put into their hair. I'm not sure how much they appreciate it being dragged across a dirty floor.

It can look dramatic, but is the sort of move I'd reserve for a cabaret.

On the subject of hair, I would love to wear mine loose more often (as I am aware that I sometimes smack the guy in face with my ponytail!) but it very quickly hangs around my face in soggy wet rats tails, which probably gives the guys an even more painful smack across the chops!!! :tears:

Back to Wednesday - Boomer, thanks for your - er - comments. I am normally a quiet, shy person in real life, but am a complete and utter tart on the dance floor - thank you for indulging me my 'hammy' dancing.

Re Daisy. Shocking!! Within minutes of Viktor making his announcement I noticed some pillock (or maybe d***head would be more appropriate) dancing near the door doing an aerial with his partner, swing her in a circle so her feet and legs were swinging out in a larger circle - I had to make a very wide berth to walk past without suffering the same fate as Daisy. Are these people deaf, stupid or what???

This rant will never be over!

Apart from this I had a great time, and it was lovely to see everone I have missed being away. Must catch a dance with Ray next time. Geordieed - I haven't had a dance with you in ages!

Cheers everone.

Guess what... I was dancing right next to the Pongster from a few weeks ago last night, and though I couldn't bring myself to meet his eye :tears: , I detected not a trace of the foul stench from the previous few occasions.

And as luck would have it, on the very next track I happened to dance with his previous partner, and there was no trace of anything unpleasant on her, which I would have expected given that even the space he vacated had been pretty bad for minutes afterwards on those previous occasions.

So, maybe, just maybe, all's well that ends well. It may be too soon to claim a result, but the early indications are good.

Maybe some of the more dangerous dippers can be my next targets. There was another guy showing off ridiculously to his partner last night, and crashed into me twice... the second time I fixed him with what must have been a pretty withering glare   , since he immediately apologised and looked very sheepish.

Rubbish.

In any case, anyone that still looks perfectly coiffed by even half way through a dance night is either not dancing much or is an alien.

Dance is a physical activity. Some evidence of same is perfectly acceptable, in fact, I would even go as far as desirable :innocent: .

You do know how to make a girl feel better - thanks :)

I was rather offended on Wednesday night when: - finally near the end of the evening I finished a dance in the vicinity of Viktor and thought I might actually get the chance to dance with him (now - I'm not complaining that I can rarely walk 2 metres before someone asks me to dance, but it does make choosing partners a geographical exercise...) but another lady approached him at the same time I did (actually I could have sworn it was slightly after me but I couldn't really tell) and Viktor, being the nice guy he is, started to look uncomfortable at having to choose. So the other lady offered a solution by saying to me "Look at how sweaty you are compared to me - I haven't danced for half an hour". And her manner made me feel about 2 inches tall and repulsive as all hell, so I ran away.

(...and having managed to choke back a tear, I went and found someone else sweaty and having a good time to dance with.)

Now thinking back - if I was dancing all night, and she stood still for half an hour - I can't be too gross. But she really crushed me at the time. I know I get rather damp and unruly, and many apologies for that, but if someone is exercising for three hours, surely you have to expect it!

Ah, there. I really do feel better about that now. Thanks for 'listening'. And it was so much cheaper than professional therapy!

Well. "Bitchy" is the only appropriate description of that kind of comment that comes to mind, unless all she meant was that she felt it was somehow fairer for her to get another dance before you did, since she hadn't been dancing for a while.

I know I get rather damp and unruly, and many apologies for that, Debs, the day you have to apologise for being damp and unruly on the dance floor, is the day I go and find something else to do than dance.

I loved the dance with you on Wed, and the fact that you felt Ok to throw yourself into it as you did (without, I might add, at any time making me feel like an appendage, or failing to follow even some of my crasser leads) I took as a great compliment. So there

but if someone is exercising for three hours, surely you have to expect it!

Exactly. Not only that, but if I've been dancing for hours, then no matter how recent my last shirt-change, there will be evidence of the fact. I'd much rather dance with someone in the same state, than some of the "dance one track out of 10 cos I'm too good for the music and I don't like to sweat and anyway I've got all these hotshots to chat to so don't bother asking me to dance" types.

Excellent points - thanks for mentioning them.

But the 'head flick' would still work shoorly? A little latin-esque add-on . . .

Totally up to the lady though . . . and I normally test the water (ie ask) before doing laybacks and swaybacks

Is it going to be the first 10,000 view thread? Have there been any others?

Can Franck head it off at the pass by splitting it or will it make it anyway???

Is this the most pointless post ever????

It's a shame because as a result it has become very dull, and many interesting topics that would have thrived solo are now buried
Nobody wants to read a 50+ pages thread!

The number of views is only connected to the high number of posts / pages... splitting the thread would not affect it in any way :nice:

Well, I dunno... people are posting to it, and are clearly reading it. You read it :D

And mostly it's reasonably on topic... either about the place, or about stuff happening there, or about the people that go there.

I think it's ok... some areas of a diverse place like this are bound to be different from others. It'll pass into the mists of oblivion eventually if it has no current relevance. Though I think it has the depth to continue provoking the debate about the content and style of different dance orgs for a while longer - to the benefit of all of them.

Like life, it ain't possible to conveniently compartmentalise each separate thing that happens.

Thanks for being so tolerant, anyway :nice:

Hmmm. Maybe Franck shouldn't have said 'Nobody'. He should have probably said 'Most People'.

Trouble is, that it's not relevant to most people on the forum. And I know that most people (that I've talked to), don't actually read it. Franck has to read it, because he's the moderator. I usually just skim though it, and don't really read it.

If you took out all the posts by 4 or 5 people, it'd probably only be 2 pages long. If that.

Now, I'm not saying that it shouldn't have existed. But I do agree that it's probably getting a little long and boring now. And maybe it's time to put it to rest??

Steve
