View Full Version : What's your Storage Capacity?

I'm uploading ring tones etc from my old phone (SE K750i) to my new phone (SE K800i) and I was just plugging in the 2GB M2 micro card when I thought just now ridiculous 2GB on a phone would have been a few years back !! (Jings 2GB on a PC would have been unheard of a few years back)

So I decided to total up my various devices I have ON ME AT THE MOMENT (not counting my portable HDD or Laptop I have at home and not counting this works laptop I'm using just now) It kind of shocked me.

IPAQ H5550 - 4Gb SD card, Expansion Pack with 2 x 2GB Compact Flash = 8 GB
Iomega mini HDD usb - 40GB
Creative Labs Zen Touch - 20GB
Sony Ericsson K800i + 2GB M2 Micro card = 2GB
USB Pen Drive - 4 GB

totalling all that little lot up I would be capable (assuming I emptied my various cards out , deleted mp3's etc) to pinch up to 74GB of confidential works information and sneak out the front door with it.

Now I know there are bigger portable HDD's out there (the big brother to my Iomega one is 100GB) so I'm expecting other geeks to beat me easily.

What's your current storage capacity

(I'm beginning to thing Johnny mnemonic didn't need to risk his head after all ;) )

On me right now? Fairly measly, to be honest - a few meg on my phone, and 4gig on my PDA. If I had my iPod with me today, that would add an extra 80gig ... but I don't.

At home - well - that's a different matter. I totted up the storage capacity in and attached to my Mac, and it came to around 1.2 terabytes.

Why?

Didn't know that there was that much info available for a mac

Is it just me or does the word terabyte sound like some monster from a 70's space puppet show?

well if we're counting my PC(s) at home I have a 400gb Sata drive in my Main PC , 200gb in my server (I know I know, back to front! but it's only a cr*ppy little wifi mail/web server hidden away in my bedroom cupboard ;) )

I would like to upgrade (ie.. completely rebuild) my PC soon, but with my new flat, and flights up and down to London I've been unable to keep up with the bleeding edge and lagging behind a bit.

you're thinking of Terrahawks aren't you? I loved that show !!

Well - you learn something every day

Yeah - I think Terabyte was Megabyte's arch-nemesis.
Kilabyte was one of Terabyte's chief minions.

And then there was Yobibyte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yobibyte), who was thought to be a mere football hooligan, but who turned out to be Terabyte's Supreme Commander.

Or did I just totally ruin the whole plot?

You're right. Mac users tend to have data on that (pictures, video, music, etc) rather than just hordes of useless apps .

Anyway I've got my iPod Nano (2GB) and a phone with 2MB! in.

That's it... and I call myself a geek.

I think I have a 128Mb and a 256Mb CompactFlash card for my other camera
128Mb card in my phone

I think that's it

Hang on though..... do the 40-odd blank DVDs I have count?

Currently carrying about 86Gb, mostly the iPod, plus Cf cards for the Nikon. I also have a pocket sized HHD backup drive at home, with 120Gb of space on it.

Oh, and my brain as well. Current estimates of human brain capacity put it in the 10 Terabyte - 1 Petabyte range 1000 Terabytes is called a Petabyte

30Gb iPod (but that's out in the car so doesn't really count).... and the 128Mb card in my phone...

I have a 186GB file on one of my HDs at the moment. (It's a 200000 x 450000 pixel satellite image, if you're curious).

About 1.5TB external right now, plus 320GB internal, and another TB of hard drives with archived data but not plugged in.

I can handle about 6 pints of lager (4 if its WifeBeater) before considering an impromtue day off the next day, but I'll have a headache after 3.

And I can neck 2 and a half before needing a pee but after the first pee somehow my man sized bladder gets replaced with that of a gnat and I only need to think of a drink and I'll need to down load again!

Ah ha... the "first fatal" pee! you have to hold it as long as you can 'cos once you've gone once... you spend the rest of the night in the loo!

My mobile phone probably has a few kilobytes on it. Just enough to store 100 phone numbers and about 30 odd texts I think.

Oh hang on, my camera has a 1gb card and a 256mb one. Doh!!! And I wanted to win the lowest award too with my really old phone. :tears:

I forgot to mention..

Pad of A4 paper and pencil. Each character I write is one byte

depending on how small I write and if I use both sides.. that has to count for a few megabytes at least too ;)

You aren't writing some non-ASCII characters then?

What encoding are you using?

what if you write in all lower case ? :)

Beowulf
24th-April-2007, 03:21 PM
what if you write in all lower case ? :)

I could write in all 1's and 0's if you wanted.. but that would take up much more space on the paper.

I could use fullstops and dashes though. would be flaming hard to read though!
