View Full Version : How often do you all dance?

Apologies if there has been a thread along these lines, but I'm curious to know how many times a week (on average) you all dance? I mean actually attending a Ceroc venue, rather than praticising with an imaginary partner when you have a spare moment - we've all done it!

You might find a poll would be a good idea on here - or if someone knows of another thread like this and can link it in?

Normally you do it when you start the thread - but since you've already done that you'll have to ask a nice friendly moderator to do it... DJ?

How much do you reckon is the minimum to see real progress? Do most people get by on once a week?

In my opinion, for real progress, you need the following sessions, at least once per week:

A class, to Learn Stuff
Practice with feedback, to see if you understand what you've learnt
Freestyle, with several different people, to put into effect the things you've learnt.

You also need a "learning plan", or structure, to follow, even if it's only a rough outline ("this week I'll be mostly working on...").

And I wish to God someone had told me that 10 years ago... :tears:

Depends how long you want to take over it really and what standards you use to judge your progression.
I did once a week, beginners only, for 3 months, then once a week beginners/intermediate for another 6 months and I think I reached a fair standard. Quite a high standard by local comparison, but at weekenders and London freestyles, still bottom of the pile.
Starting again with Blues now means that I'm at the bottom of the pile again!

Some people have gone flying past my standard with 3 - 6 months by dancing every night, but a year on, some of them are starting to lose their buzz for it and I'm still loving it!

So yes, you will get there doing it once a week, but don't expect it to be overnight.
You can speed it up by dancing more, but if you're doing it for fun, try not to lose sight of that.
Oh and try to be a bit more patient that me. A common conversation between me and others used to be:
Me: "look at him, how does he do that? I want to dance like that."
B: "Yes, but he's been dancing for 10 years Gav, you've been dancing for 1 year"
Me: "I don't care, I want to be like that NOW!".

Interesting, I never thought about having a proper learning plan, but I suppose it's like anything else - learning in a structured way is a much better technique for making progress. I would dance more often if I could, but one problem is expense - at £7 a pop, classes aren't that cheap. And there is a limit to the amount of times I can nag my other half to 'go over that move just one more time!'

Yes, I have a problem with being patient as well. I think it's a bit like learning a language - you get to a point where you know what you want to express, but can't get the words out in time. You also start berating yourself (at least I do) for not starting this years ago. It's good to have a reminder that after all, this is for FUN, not a gruelling test of endurance.

See Terpsithingy!

There comes a point where you become torn;
Do I go to not so good places and get worshipped, but not really learn anything?
Or, do I go to the really good places and feel like a total spastic compared to the ****-hot dancers, but learn a lot from dancing with great dancers?

I prefer to go for the latter option, but it doesn't do your ego any harm to go and show off from time to time.

I started dancing just over 4 months ago. It started off once a week. Then after about a month it went to twice a week. Then within another couple of weeks I had started doing the intermediate classes and then it went to 3 times, then 4 times a week.:nice: I would do the fifth day as well if it was completely down to me. :what:

Even these 4 classes a week with freestyles wasn't/isn't enough. I so want to go the weekend freestyles. I have been to a couple now and absolutely love them. They are so different, you get to dance with so many different and new people. Fabulous. I went to one on Saturday night and I'm still buzzing from it now.

Then of course there's the weekenders. Apparently three children can't take care of themselves and the cat and the house when their parents are dancing the weekend away. Kids these days eh!!!

Basically I would dance every single day if I could. I am seriously addicted. Everyone tells me that I should pace myself that I am going to burn out but I really can't imagine that happening. Dance is my drug. :awe:

Burning out is also fun. Dance lots, burn out, go do something else, come back, start again.
Personally, I found dancing every day was a little too much wear and tear on the joints and suchlike. Plus I ended up making some odd dancing decisions on days when nothing was happening.

I've ticked 1-2 times a week, as that's average. Sometimes it's more, sometimes it's less - was a bit worried about Hammersmith on Saturday as I hadn't danced for 2 weeks and thought I might be a bit rusty (but I had danced 3 times in the week leading up to the last time I'd danced). But I wasn't too bad.

If I do 3 times a week or more for any length of time I find that I get too knackered, plus other consequences (like can't find anything in my flat, friends start to say "who" when I call them up and I bore my colleagues rigid with tales of dancing...). Now if I was younger, and didn't have to get up and come to work in the morning it'd be a lot easier...

12th-March-2007, 06:24 PM
I've been dancing three years and it depends on what else is going on in life.... minimum twice, maximum 5 times a week, depending on sitters!!

Apparently three children can't take care of themselves and the cat and the house when their parents are dancing the weekend away.

You're right, kids don't look after themselves- but I'm a better Mum when I've had my fix- if I haven't danced for a few days I start spinning in the kitchen while cooking. Last time I did that I fell over the baby gate :D (not for a baby- for the dogs)

As a single lady too it's brilliant for just getting out on my own just on a whim and socialising with the many lovely people:love: I've met over the years.

My enthusiasm for dancing goes up and down too, post weekenders I'm addicted for a while- then it flattens out a bit, then I'll meet a fab/sexy (or both if I'm lucky) new dancer or learn a new move that I love and off I go again.....

....and finally, it's the best cure for the Blues  I know. I say to the other scrummy mummies- 'chuck those Prozac and come dancing!!!'

I went with the 4-5 option, but it does depend on what's happening that week (have done 13 days in a row before), and does two venues on the same day count as twice or is it how many days a week? (I've been known on quite a few occasions to do a busk during the day and then a freestyle in the evening, for instance)

When I first started it was once a week for about three months, doing the beginners class and then I stared going to freestyles which could take me up to three times a week, and after a year I went to my first weekender which was Southport three years ago, and I then was so addicted with going on dance holidays, also I did not get to see my non dancing friends much or even my daughters as often we live in different parts of the country, but in the last few months I don't have that big buzz as much plus my grandson was born new years eve, and it made me reacess what was more important and in the last few weeks I have been doing other non dancing things like meeting up with my friends even booked a holiday to Spain with my girlfriends, I still dance about once a week for the social aspect and I am enjoying it better like this and not beating myself up if I am not dancing well, because at the end of the day to me it is a nice hobby in ever way.:)

1-2 times a week. Because although I only go to a regular Ceroc night once a week, there are weekenders and freestyles that add another few nights per month, so once a week or less would be inaccurate.

Though this week, I'm planning on 3 evenings - Ceroc, cha cha and AT.

When I was young and childless, I used to dance (contemporary or occasionally ballet) or go to the gym nearly every day. Now - as a middle aged :tears: mother :awe: who works  - something had to give!

On a regular week (term time) I do one contemporary class and one ceroc class. I get to a party most alternate weekends when my girls are with their father. I substitute my contemporary class with yoga or body combat during holiday periods and on the six weeks a year when my girls are on holiday with their dad but I am working, I try to arrange to get to as many ceroc nights around Scotland as my work diary and cat sitters will allow (fortunately we have offices in most places  !!)

Did my first weekender at Southport in February and am looking forward to more

It's a hectic but balanced dance life
