What are the new icons on the bottom of posts? I can only see them in Discussion Lounge threads?

What do the following choices allow you to do?

Digg this post
Add post to del.icio.us
Vookmark post in Technorati
Furl this post

I'm not brave enough to just click one - it might be an ejector seat button or something

Looking forward to an answer on this one too - just noticed the wee icons on Chef's post. Too scared to click on anything though

Working on the basis of 'one way to find out is to push the button'*, I have clicked on a couple and they seem to require you to be logged into whatever...

*I know, not always advisable...

What are the new icons on the bottom of posts? Those icons are useful for people using the Digg (http://www.digg.com), Furl (http://www.furl.net), technorati (http://www.technorati.com) or del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us) websites.

Essentially, they are collections of bookmarks or web stories. Everytime someone 'diggs' a post or news item, it's importance is increased and when it reaches critical mass, the story is shared by thousands. In practise, if you register with any of the above, and think other people would benefit from reading the post / thread, you could digg it, but only if many people agreed with you would it have much of an impact. :nice:

All the above websites are well worth checking out and registering with if you're a news junky, or like to have interesting links brought to your attention.

Those links are a great way to bring the Ceroc Scotland Forum and our discussions to a greater audience.

I thought some sections of this forum were only open to registered users - does this mean those posts would be shared outside of the forum with non forum users?

No, the forum will continue to work on the same basis and posts in private areas will remain hidden to non-registered members.Having further tested it by 'digging' the 'Congratulations, you survived' thread (http://www.cerocscotland.com/forum/private-lounge/11641-congratulations-you-survived.html) which is in the Private Lounge, I was able to add the thread to digg.com with a short description of what the thread was about.
You can view the Digg page with the story here (http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/Congratulations_you_survived).

When I followed up the link form Digg, I was taken to the 'you are not registered or logged in' page.

As ever, though none of the threads are truly private as registration is free and automatic...

Yes please.

Btw - according to my dictionary, Furl is another name for heroin.

happy to hear your views.

Just a suggestion: Do you think it would be better to have them at the top of each page of thread rather than on each individual post?
This could be more useful in a couple of ways:
- more people are likely to click if they see something on the page they like, rather than everyone clicking on individual posts, so critical mass will be reached faster
- when critical mass is reached I'm sure that people reading these threads would rather have the full story in terms of reading the thread. As has been shown on several occasions the 'wrong' idea' can come from posts taken out of context.

A couple of questions:
- how many is 'critical mass'?
- can a user click on the same thread/post several times in order to 'bump' up numbers?

Thanks Franck :flower:

Just a suggestion: Do you think it would be better to have them at the top of each page of thread rather than on each individual post? Yes, having thought about it further, it's a better idea, and will hopefully be less intrusive in everyone's reading habit.

A couple of questions:
- how many is 'critical mass'?
- can a user click on the same thread/post several times in order to 'bump' up numbers?Critical mass is a very variable number. If you look at Digg for example, the 'hot' threads tend to have thousands of diggs, so we're unlikely to ever get to the front page, but it might help bring our best discussions on dance or other topics to some people's attention.
No, once you register as a Digg user, you can only digg a story once, and other digg users can bury it, if they feel it's spam or pointless.

Yes, having thought about it further, it's a better idea, and will hopefully be less intrusive in everyone's reading habit. I have now changed it, so that if you like a thread, and would like to add it to digg.com or del.icio.us you will have to use the 'link back' drop down menu next to the 'thread tools'.
