So what was to be made of Funky Lush?

I had a good night but for me personally I prob wouldn't go again in a rush as the 2 hour drive each way is a bit much.

Was nice to hear a different style in music and see the non forumites that were in to their WCS.

The gender balance was way off though. I tried to get through as many ladies as I could (but thats another story )

Good to get a couple of dances with Gav (don't think we done anything to convince the DJ you were straight) and to Finally meet the very naughty DT..

Great to see some others too. Suzie Q (we will have to dance again sometime, was knackered by the time we danced) Minnie M, Jivelad, Dizzy and the brilliant Almost an Angel.

The venue is in a great location, just not big enough and no real bar. Ended too early too.

It was great, I really enjoyed it, can't rate it highly enough.

Roughly how many people were there, then? With smaller numbers, any gender gap can become pronounced. 10 extra women in a group of 50 people is 50% over - in a group of 200, it's only a 55-45 split.

Well my first FunkyLush too.

Negative
I'm told that most of the regulars weren't there, which was a shame because it certainly wasn't crowded. In fact when DT and I arrived, there was just the two of us and two other ladies for about 1/2 hour.
Apparently it was also their first time at the venue, so maybe we can forgive the lack of bar and dodgy lighting (too bright, I thought).
I was also told that the music wasn't really what DJ Kenobe usually plays

positive
The people that were there were freindly and enthusiastic. Lovely to meet Jivelad, Almost an Angel and SuzyQ, and great to see all the lovely forumites that I know already.
The floor was good and the hall was nice and big, I'm sure that the lighting and bar can be sorted out for next time?
Music. What can I say? I was very impressed. There was probably only one track that I didn't like and apparently the music is usually better! Congrats DJ Kenobe, I loved it.
Leading woodface was an experience?! It probably didn't help that it was moments after a certain comeone told the DJ that I'm gay

I'll definitely be back whether it's at Ashtead or another venue.

wow - that many forumites! didn't realise! Please say hello next time....

The music was a nice change - the venue brilliant for the number of people IMHO - so much space - a real gold mine compared to Hammersmith on a busy busy night. (Depends what kind of mood you are in mind - sometimes busy is good as well! :D )

Was the floor a bit sticky on saturday? All the guys and girls with good technique were fine - Me, bad spinner - trying to get better, was atrocious! I'm hoping it was the floor.... I'm really not getting on with these sodding cubans... ankles where killing me by the end of the night! Dunno how you girls swear by heels!

Early fini wasn't too much of a bind - for me, I just needed to juggle the weekend a bit - and was able to wake up early enought to have a full day with the folks for Chinese new year! :na:

Would have said Hello if I had known you were there.

The floor wasn't the greatest. Think I managed to pull off 4-5 spins which is below par.

The me , Gav and DT stealing game was a laugh though. Had a few people wondering what was going on. Esp as I ended up with gav.

Yeah, the list of forumites (apologies for missing off this list, or my blog entry - but that was who I was introduced to - or mentioned in the above posts)

Woodface (known hereafter in my gang as 'Woodchip')
Gav
Double Trouble
SeriouslyAddicted
SpikyBlonde
MinnieM
Dizzy (spin-supremo!)
AlmostAnAngel (did I meet/dance with her? - dunno)
John Sweeney (with Karen)
Chef (I guess with the trousers!)
MartyBabe (did not meet...?)
SuzyQ (don't think I met her - could be wrong)
JiveLad

As mentioned here and in my blog, the gender balance was way off. Two ladies left after a bit, and got their money back. My gang (non-forumites)of 3 ladies left after an hour and just went to the pub (a couple of them did have some good dances, including Gav and Woodchip) - but it was just too much of a challenge. I would guesstimate that at about 9:30 the gender balance was about 2:1 women to men.........maybe even more women (with 20-30 men?).

Overall, this was a good night - especially the music - and helped (along with Cheshunt the previous night) to move things along for me.

Now.........does anyone know where I can learn WCS in Hertfordshire?

I always seem to get back from these things and find that there were forumites whom I've never met and didn't know were there!
Maybe there's just too many forumites to know you all?

Anyone know what the remix of Boogie Tonight was?

Though the music was great. Nice not to hear the usual kack.

The lighting was off. I was expecting a blues room esu atmosphear but insted was more like an afterclass freestyle.

The gender balance was way off but I guess it was one of them things. Nothing can be done about it.

AFAIK, most WCS classes and dances seem to be clumped around the Southwest London area - dunno why, historical I guess...

Funky Lush is not everyone's cup of tea... that's what makes it different. Some people love it, some people hate it.

Did you meet the likes of Div and Tweek? Sparkles? Was any of the ex Jango crowd there (may it live on in our hearts)?

If you haven't heard much Funky Lush stuff, it can certainly be a different experience, especially if you are used to fast, head bangy doof doof. Give it another go and I bet you will find yourself loving it more and more.

The music Toby plays gives you a chance to take your dancing in a whole different direction and shows a whole different side to Modern Jive.

Nope I don't think we did dance as I can remember all the men I danced with!! The reason for that is I was leading most of the time!! (no change there then!)

As for SuzyQ - you can't miss her - she's on the tall side!!!

OK Forumites you forgot that were there are:

Mary
MsFab
Wicked Blue
Just wiggle
Modchick
Keith J
Divissima
Mooncalf
Rachel (how could you miss out Rachel!)

Although the gender balance was a bit off (ok about double women) there were a fair few of us girlies leading to make up for it (SuzyQ, Ms Fab, Me etc). It was a good night - despite the slow start and me leading lots. Added bonus was I had 2 fab dances with Marc  thank you for loaning him Rachel:hug:

As for WCS in Hertfordshire - nope can't think of any. What about coming down for the next Bisley Sunday?

***, Considering it wasn't exactly packed, how can we have not realised who all these forumites were? By the looks of it there were more forumites than not.
Were there 2 groups of forumites who don't know any of each others groups?
I think it's time to start wearing those forum t-shirts everywhere! I may have to get a slightly less offensive one though

Nah, it's just that the Funky Lush Liberation Front split off from the Liberation Front of Funky Lush a while back, and they don't speak to each other nowdays.

Now.........does anyone know where I can learn WCS in Hertfordshire?

In total, at the Swish weekender just gone, I had 10 people come up to me to ask if there were any WCS classes in:
Cambridge
Lowestoft
Norwich
Newcastle (the NE one)
Northamptonshire

and the rest I cannot remember.

Each one got the same answer. I apologised and told them that there simply are not any regular classes in these areas.
The only thing I could recommend was to make the journey, where possible, to the workshops in Surrey and/or Manchester region. I also mentioned there might possibly be some classes run by Ceroc central but I wasn't sure.

Its such a shame (and mildly frustrating) not to be able to say "YES!, there is a class here, here and here".
Hopefully, in time, things may improve.

Fingers crossed !

Doesn't matter if you're a miserable, unsociable g1t I suppose :na:

It's just nice to know who people are, especially if you chat to them on here (or get dragged into blazing rows  ) and then find that you go to the same venues.
It's nice to meet someone in the flesh after reading their posts.

You have got to be joking!

That is really weird - possibly more formites there then - well.... non-forumites!

Perhaps it would be nice - next time this happens... if the music can stop for a second, and a roll call announced.... an inpromtu BFG of the south?

Both you and Gav graciously accepted my request for a dance. It would have been nice to be asked for a dance in return at another point in the evening, but given that there were so many ladies over I can understand that may not have been possible.

I rather enjoyed having the opportunity to chat with some of my fellow followers - it's not often one gets the chance it it's too busy. :flower:

I got there late (10pm) after our car broke down on the M25 and we had a cold 90 minutes in police provided silver blankets on the hard shoulder (the policeman looked too young to have reached 6th form btw - I am old now) before it was fixed.

I also went in my usual disguise of chefs trousers so that no one would know who I am.

I do know that Funky Lush is so very different from the majority of the other MJ events that it is going to be something you either love or hate. I have been to a few of the FL events when they were at Southhall and one at Burnham and a lot of the music I find very challenging (along the lines of - what the hell am I supposed to do with this). But being someone that spends the whole weekend in the blues/WCS/chill room of weekenders, slower, more expressive and interesting music is my spice in an otherwise dull MJ scene.

However

I found the music at FL dull, even to the point of boring me. It reached a point when I was dancing with a really fantastic follower and she suggest we dance the next track as well and I had to tell her that the music was not saying a thing to me. It was different to a normal MJ night but I found the music uninteresting within itself.

I returned to my partner, hoping she was having a better night than me to be met with the question "can we leave?" and me to reply "oh, yes please".

I don't know if the music that Toby plays has changed so much since my last visits to FL or if our tastes in music has changed since more involvement in WCS and cha cha. I do feel that our tastes and Tobys' have diverged but I think Toby should stay with his vision of the music he wants to present. Some will like it, some new people will come to like it, and some, like me will like it and then its' attraction will fade away.

It's really pity to have something like Funky Lush move closer to where you live only to find that I have moved away from it.

Maybe the other forumites were delib ignoring us hoping we didn't ask them for a dance :tears:.

I think, cos:

1. The men were extremely busy (Woodface, particularly, from what I saw), and it was often hard to find a man to dance with, let alone stand chatting to.

2. Given the amount of WCS music, I didn't feel very confident asking men to dance until it was music I was more comfortable with.

3. I did actually spend a lot of time catching up with people I already knew but hadn't seen in ages.

4. I've learnt from the past that it can get quite embarrassing starting conversations with random strangers along the lines: 'So, um, are you on the forum?' [Usual response: Huh, what? What forum??]

But you're right - it would have been nice to have made contact.

I guess it won't help to say that I was the one in the little black sparkly dress, as I think that's what all the women were wearing!

.......so there were nearly 30 forumites there.

As a proportion of the total number of people there, is that unusually large? (A record?).

If I go to my usual places (St. Albans, Stevenage, Luton, Watford, Berko, Hatfield, Chesham) - I don't meet any forumites (apart from seeing Rachel in the Blues Room at Berko, Icey, Lory at Chesham)..................and as Rachel says, you don't go up to someone and say "Are you in the forum..........".

Maybe there are forumites at those venues (most likely Berko....)...who knows.......? It's not a big thing, however, it can be nice to share a connection in that way.

Funky Lush / Jango events are usually very forum-heavy.

... Maybe there are forumites at those venues (most likely Berko....)...who knows.......? It's not a big thing, however, it can be nice to share a connection in that way.I'm sure my path must cross with loads of forumites, without me ever realising it! And I'm bad enough remembering people's real names, let alone their forum alias. In fact, we danced before we realised we were both on the forum, didn't we, Jivelad?

But I'm not overly worried. If a connection is made and you seem to be getting on well with someone, then it's likely to come out sooner or later if you're on the forum. If you don't get on with someone, then having the forum in common is not going to make you like them any better. So I'm happy to sit back and not push myself as a forumite - just let conversation take it's natural course.

However, people to ask if you ever want to know who anyone is, including forumites, are:

Minnie M
Lory
WittyBird
Fletch

Between them, they know everyone!

I was a little bit worried when I saw the women flocking into the venue ... but all in all I had a terrific night ... probably because there were some women that put up with my terrible lead and my even more terrible WCS lead!

btw thanks to those who helped me get another WCS move into my repertiore (Modchick will be particularly pleased as she is a little bored of my two and a half WCS moves)!

There were plenty of usual suspects missing :( ... not sure where they were!

Lovely dance with Gav ... what a smooth and gentle lead you have :D.

In fact lots of lovely dances (with one spectacular woosh moment while dancing with Simon Borland - oh I do like a good woosh!).

The only thing I would say is that I didn't get a WCS dance with a man all night which was a bit dissapointing (and yet the norm) - if you dance with those who aren't part of your tight knit group then you will have more good dancers to dance with ...

Finally, I still have no idea who Jivelad is OR David James ... please put me out of my misery and introduce yourselves!!

:yeah: That is the Funky Lush I know and love - but Saturday's FL was very different.

No Sparkles, Foxylady, Spicy or Foxy - not even Phil Web, Lory, Kev, PaulF, Amir, David & Lily or Kate & Will - and many of the other regulars were missing :tears:

Even the music was different :tears: :tears:

However, I realise that TWK had to cater for the different crowd, as as you can see by the majority of the posts above - the boy did well :flower:

I didnt think the music had changed that much. I managed quite a few WCS dances, Cha chas, Tangos and of couse some modern jive. There were some new tracks and some of the old favourites.
Like AAA, spent 70-80% leading - The gender balance wasnt great but as someones pointed out the lower the numbers the more obvious the difference in numbers between the genders. Quite a few of the regulars werent there too
It didnt get going till later which we thought was odd since it did have an early finish.
I think the next one at ashtead is booked for september - im sure we'll have a few to look forward to inbetween though:clap:

Maybe it was me ..... I haven't been to FL for quite a while now, and things do change as DT has said. There are certainly lots more WCS dancers and WCS dancing. (Had a lovely WCS dance with Msfab)

It was a very slow start, possibly because of the lack of men, I don't think I had a dance until about 10pm, however I had a fab dance with Marc and a couple fantastic dances with Simon Borland, and lovely dances with Chef, JiveLad & Woodface and the evening ended with a fab dance with Marty

I had a lovely evening, but I didn't dance all that much, a mixture of reasons - not just because of the lack of men.

Sometimes its nice to get to chat and catch-up, esp when you only see some people at dance venues :D (I didn't help myself sitting at the back chatting  ) so am not going to complain about my lack of dances.

Had some lovely dances with SuzyQ testing out some new moves on me :nice:

Simon Borland

I cant believe Simon Borland was there and he didn't ask me to dance....!

He obviously didn't realise that the notorious DT was in the room.

You missed your opportunity there Simon. :waycool:    :tears:

Actually she said 'I love a minger'.

You really must get your ears checked out Woodchip.:D

I was a little bit worried when I saw the women flocking into the venue ... but all in all I had a terrific night ... probably because there were some women that put up with my terrible lead and my even more terrible WCS lead!
SuzyQ

I don't think I've ever danced MJ with you but I find your WCS lead easy to follow and half the time I don't know what I'm doing in WCS anyway... I'll have to make sure we do it again soon - maybe without the extra "help" this time.

Oh, and you can add Dave H and myself to the list of forumites there (just very quiet ones!).

I'm not sure I agree. Funky Lush is what it is because it's difference. Otherwise it would just become another Ashtons or Hammersmith.. god forbid. I hope that Toby does keep his individuality when it comes to his playlists and doesn't bow to the pressure of playing more mainstream music.

:yeah: It was my first Funky Lush so I have nothing to compare it with. As I said before, I thought the music was brilliant. 100% improvement on your standard Hammersmith or Ashtons. :flower:

That is true ........ :respect:

Maybe it was me, I haven't been to FL for a very long time - the music was definitely great, but not as challenging as I remembered it to be - but there again most of the usual leads were not there, and that certainly wasn't FL's fault, and as a professional TWK did need to adapt to the floor:respect:

(maybe this should be a new thread)
TWK most definitely set the scene, and we love him for it - but as DT has said "things do move on" and there are now are a few new'ish talented DJ's (male AND female) on the scene who have slipped from the standard 'ceroc-mould' and play excellant and sometimes challenging music :worthy: :respect: :worthy:

Most events have a 'second room' now, so that these talented DJ's can strut their stuff - and of course we have those wonderful weekenders
