These must have been taken early evening as the room looks quite empty and there appears to me repetition of dancers - especially chap with red braces.

I don't think ESG was taking much notice of the 'guy' with red braces

ESG took over 300 photos throughout the night between 7.45 and about 12.15. That was as busy as it got! They were the best of the ones he took. As they were being taken for promotional purposes he was given criteria to stick to. That is why there tends to be pics of the same people!

They're his photos (and for that matter, his site), he's free to do what he wants with them - and why should he post the ones he didn't think came out well?

Hell, I'm agreeing with Vince now :(

DJ.....It's a drag taking a camera out with you when dancing. It's really lovely to have a photographer there to take some pics, to buy if you like them.

It's just a little frustrating that you know there were some pics taken, but you cant see them as they are not on the site.

I do agree that he has to be careful which ones he puts on the site. Probably doesnt want to upset anyone by putting unflattering pics up, but it would be nice to view all the pics & see if there are any worth buying.

Perhaps the lovely Tessalicious might wish to chip in and tell us just how long Alec spends downloading, tweaking, sizing and posting the pictures that we do get to see and then we might get some idea of how unrealistic it is to expect him to do the same for all 300 or whatever he takes on a night without any guarantee of anyone actually ordering any of the pics. On top of which he's paying for the bandwidth when we look at the ones he has posted anyway.

I was going to say, he would only need to sell a few pics to cover the cost but then i remembered what a tight@rsed bunch of forumites we all are and he has probably already learnt his lesson the hard way.

I, for one, am very glad ESG doesn't put up *every* picture he takes. When one is dancing (ooh, get me sounding all posh  ) there can be all sorts of split-second ugly faces and embarrassing poses you get into. I think ESG's judgement has been pretty good so far on what he has chosen to post, and I thank him for trashing all the unsightly photos :worthy: (or at least for keeping them to himself!)

You don't have to hear my comments, lovely or not - here's what the man himself has to say:

It takes roughly as long to edit the photos as to take them (4 hours in this case) and if I don't put any particular picture up for display it's most likely because: they're out of focus (exceptionally dim light and moving subjects are a really bad combination), people's arms are covering their faces, they've got an unattractive look on their faces, their eyes are shut or they look plain silly, they're essentially repeats of other ones that are shown (in which case I choose the better - although I note the complaints about too many of "red braces" so clearly should have cut down there) or there's just nothing of interest to see in them. Part of the role of a photographer is to choose the best pictures so that nobody has to waste time trawling through 400 unedited shots to find the best. I'm afraid if you're interested just to see the ones with you in them regardless of merit - that is just conceit. (Although I am available for commissions, naturally....)

Seeing as the pictures I took on Friday were going to be taken and edited for a specific purpose and to a specific look-and-feel I was in two minds about whether to make the gallery open to view. However I knew I'd get lots of questions and I have no problem with sharing them. I'm all ears for any kind of critique about the pictures themselves but it's difficult to know what to make of bone-headed comments announcing, wrongly, when during the evening the pictures were taken. I can be sure, because I've got the time-stamped files!

As for how busy it was... although I wasn't dancing for most of the evening, it looked borderline comfortable/busy (i.e. just about right) to me. You can compare the wide shots of the dance floor with this one of the main dance floor at the Black and White Ball at Ashtons in December:

http://www.cerocphotos.com/main.php/v/blackandwhite2006/20061228_0283.jpg.html

That was taken at one minute past ten pm, the absolute peak time of what most people agreed was an exceptionally full dance floor - too busy for some, I gather. Yet it looks merely "comfortable", I would say. It's actually hard to appreciate how much more room a dancing couple takes up relative to a stationary couple which is what you see in a picture.

I know that pointing a camera at people can be intrusive.I hope that you will see that *not* being shown all the "duff" pictures is part of the process of taking good, flattering, attractive (or at least interesting) pictures of people - what every photographer strives for - by discarding the poor, unflattering, boring pictures of the same people. That applies tenfold to such a dynamic activity as dance where the camera captures fleeting grimaces, awkward leans, and unattractive poses for ever. The very least I can do to reassure people who are put out by having a lens in their face (and why shouldn't they be?) is to be seen to give very careful thought to which pictures to display.

Finally, don't worry about the bandwidth costs. It's not a lot, and the money from print sales covers it. So I shall look forward to taking many more pictures at dance events in the future.

So there you go...

bit harsh ESG ...... I was on the door for most of the evening, I only joined the dancing about 10:45 and it was crowded then ..... Your photos did make the room appear reasonbly empty, I am not a photographer I only said it looked quite empty

I have great respect for your talent and the photos displayed are excellant, it was not a critisism it was a comment :yeah:

Or this one...
