View Full Version : Rutherglen Classes on Thursdays moving to Jumpin' Jaks

Why is the Thursday night class in Rutherglen Town Hall being moved to Jumpin Jaks? I used to go to the Wed class in GUU until it closed. Tried Jumpin Jaks on the Tues night but didn't particularly like the venue as the floor is too small and the area around the floor is not great for socialising. Rutherglen TH is a lovely venue with a great floor and tables right beside the dance floor. I think it's a great shame. What does anyone else think?

:what: What a shame. I came to Rutherglen in ~Nov 2006 pre the BFG and I thought it was one of most lovely venues I've seen

While I liked Rutherglen a lot, I rarely got to go there. I'm looking forward to popping in to JJ's on a Thursday night for a dance now and then...

I totally agree with dinky. I don't like Jumpin Jaks at all. Everyone I know has been going on for ages about how great Rutherglen is. I went there for the first time last week (after finally managing to rearrange the childcare situation following closure of the GUU class. Am now going to have to rearrange it again!) and thought it was a perfect venue, so this is really disappointing. I know a lot of people also like Jumpin Jaks but it would be nice to have a bit of choice.

It could be worse – you could live in Edinburgh and have to put up with the choice of Marco's, Marco's or Marco's. ;)

I would have loved to go to the Rutherglen class after the GUU class closed (this was my first and nearest venue. Sad about Rutherglen closing, it was a beautiful venue. Unfortunately it was in the wrong location for a lot of folk.

Minor concerns about moving to Thursdays at JJ's. Firstly there's the prospect of more early (10pm) closures to make way for JJ's events. We get a fair few of these (about 6 a year I'd guess) on Tuesdays, what's the possibility of more on Thursdays? Also there's a loss of variety which has already been commented on - it would be good to get a different vibe going for the Thursday night.

Unlike Glasgow now where the choice is JJs or JJs?

I liked Rutherglen, but I find that I dance better at JJs as I like the atmosphere more. However, Ruggy was on my doorstep - and a cracking venue. What's the reason for the venue change?

I imagine having Thursday Ceroc at JJs will mean more people as it is more central.

dinky
26th-January-2007, 06:45 PM
Yes JJs is more central but us oldies dont like going into the city centre at night it's full of young whippersnappers. :innocent:

Do we have any idea who is going to be teaching and dj ing on a Thursday yet? I moved to Rutherglen classes cos I like Mhairi and Ceroc Jock.

Fairly sure this isn't changing – Franck's normally in Inverness on a Thursday and there aren't many other teachers or DJs to pick from...

No more Rock Me, Tango de Roxanne that nobody can tango to (it is a ceroc class, after all) and NO MORE 9+ minutes long Bat Out of Hell !

It may have escaped your notice that the majority of the R'glen class was well over 40 years old and many were into their 50's and some even into their 60's. You may well think of us as fuddy-duddies but at least we can smile and look like we're enjoying ourselves. Can't wait for Val Doonican or Patsy Cline, maybe we'll get her singing Crazy on Thursday at JJ's.

I've just experienced Deja Vu, for a moment I thought I was writing about Wednesday night's GUU, it was the same ol same ol there as well.

Yeah, but at least you're in Glasgow, not Edinburgh and JJ's, not Marco's! :D

6 or 7 of us who don't particularly like JJ's are going to alternate between JJ's and Marco's on Thursday's.
Another thing that hasn't been given any consideration is parking, I wonder if those who made the decision to change venues realised that Thursday is late night shopping in Glasgow City Centre, you'll be lucky to get parked in Woodlands and have a 10/15 minute walk to JJ's. I used to play snooker in the Cue Club on Thursday nights at Charing Cross and the parking was bad even that far down.

I don't think it will work out if the numbers aren't sufficient to make it financially viable, Ceroc is a business after all and I doubt if the dancers are a major priority, in a business sense. Time alone will tell and there are dance forms other than Ceroc if it doesn't work out.

Thank you for your reply, Brian.

Whilst I don't think that only under 50's can dance to the tracks above (or that Tango de Roxanne is a tango track), am not ageist. (In fact, I'm pretty sure the peoplr who request them are, indeed, over 40.)

My comment was a dig at myself playing "the same ol' same ol'" tunes and not at your age!!:flower: FWIW, every week I have played any of those three tunes, it has been because thay have been requested. (You'll also note I never play more than one of them, that they generally start with approx 3 minutes left of the evening ad the Meatloaf track is called "Paradise By The Dashboard Light".)

Lastly, there isn't much that happens in my room that escapes my notice.

Changes are afoot on a Thursday, and I am sure you won't be disappointed.:nice:

I like your mix of music Ceroc Jock. You play a good variety from 40s/50s up to modern day stuff with something to suit most folks taste . That's why I'm not so keen on Francks music which mostly has a "clubby" sound to it.

It was an older set that went to GU and also Rutherglen but then perhaps Franck should take note of that and alter his music slightly to include most of his customers.

I look forward to seeing the changes on a Thursday. :nice:

Never mind 'older' crowd, what about those of us (I'm 27) who want something from that selection! So much more atmosphere to be had from the older songs than electronic headache music. Which isn't to say that I don't enjoy plenty of upbeat cheesy pop too!

Please don't tell me you're handing over to someone else?:tears: I can't cope with all these changes!!! I leave for a mere five months and come home to my taxi venue closed and my favourite venue changed to the one I really dislike and my favourite dj promising different stuff to the stuff I've been craving for five months stuck in a place with funny foreign tastes in music and dance style! I feel like thingy in Back To The Future where he gets back to 1985 only to find it isn't!!!! :( :( :(

All I want is to come home to dance in the GUU to CJ's music, with PM and CJ and McJester and andystyle and the rest of the usual suspects...

I like a range of music - and I mean a range from Louis Armstrong and Abba to Yehudi Menuhin and Led Zepplin via Joni Mitchell and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Musicals!

Totally Eclectic describes my style - so both JJ nights will satisfy my craving for Dancing and Music :)

CJ - I am really sorry to hear we will wont be hearing your tunes on Thursdays any more. Does this mean you wont be along for a dance either? Does this mean, the lucky girlies wont be dancing with you either????

I didnt know Rutherglen was closing as a Ceroc venue. This is the first I have heard of it, and I have to say, it would have been nice to have received a wee 'PM' to the taxi's to say that this was happening. Nice to be kept informed of what is happening at your local venue . . . or is that just asking too much?

I liked Rutherglen a lot, not just as it is a beautiful venue, a great teacher and DJ, and a great vibe, but the taxis have the luxury of going to a seperate room to do the revision class, and not have to struggle to be heard over the PA system in Jacks whilst the Intermeds class is going on. What will happen to Nickys style class - will she also have to compete with the Beginners class? Hmmm. Ok.

Sorry to see the venue change. Jacks is good, always had good nights there.

CJ - Hope your last evening DJ-ing for Ceroc sees you off with a 'bang'

I am really sorry to hear Rutherglen is closing,it is where I started last year.I find myself wandering back there not only because its close but because you can chat with anyone, dance with everyone and be more of a family there.

I know its not to everyones taste but to me I will be sad because, there I found something that has changed my life for the better.

To everyone there adieu.

See you at J-j s for a more businesslike gathering.

And like Bee bee it would have been nice to been informed that as taxi or event manager of your local being closed.

i also cant believe all the changes that have been going on lately! i did think that despite being away id managed to keep up to date with ceroc in scotland but it seems not!

cj - i cant believe im going to come back and not hear you djing again!i loved your mix of music and think itl be a huge loss to ceroc if you're not playing cos of the stupid rule!

as for rutherglen -i loved the venue, and i also loved the older music! having come from a jive background, and loving the blues, i agree with lemioncake and the others who say that constant one beat dance tunes can get really boring - but try telling that to some of the people here! having said that its getting better - but the lack of djs at class nights is grating - no requests grrr!!!!

we'll miss you!!!

Even if you have to change the venue - for this [so far as I have read ] unspecified reason :what: - then at least keep the winning formula of DJ and Teacher :worthy: .

You realise CJ that if you appear at a class or are still DJing at the GUU parties, then you will not be able to sit out a single dance - you will be Mobbed :respect: Save me a dance will you?? :respect:

The new DJ's name will be something like Dell, Toshiba, Vaio, Compaq or even Acer, eventually operated by the teacher on the night. This will then be the same as Franck and all the other teachers who use a laptop and sound system instead of a DJ.
Makes me wonder if it was Ceroc's intention to get rid of all DJs by requiring them sign up to an onerous contract and saving 50 or 60 quid a class.

Business is business, so it's said.

We will have a DJ on the night, Nicola will be taking over the music every Thursday (using an Apple laptop) and with help, support and training from myself and Tiggerbabe, I expect the music on a Thursday to remain of a very high standard, individual and different in mood to the Tuesdays.

Guys, play nice!!!

Nicola is well clue-ed up and should be able to give you all some great nights.

Ceroc and I are heading seperate ways, so it made sense to seperate. Franck and I discussed it (almost like mature, sensible adults) and feel that this is the best for both Ceroc, as a whole, and myself.

I will continue to DJ and teach independently, doing various workshops around the country, etc... (available for 21st, barmitsvars, funerals, etc )

14 years is a long time with any organisation, and we've served each other well.

Re DJ's comments... true, I can no longer be listed as a Ceroc DJ, but I'll leave Franck to decide what my subtitle should be!!

That said, it was a shame to lose Rutherglen Town Hall, especially to go to JJ's, but there we have it. We don't have the facts behind the decision.

As for Nix... get behind her. She's a great dancer, and a good teacher in her own right. I'm sure she'll be a great DJ. She'll be different from me, but that's what makes each nght special.:nice:

I will be dancing periodically, so shall see you there..

Meantime, would be good to see you on Thursday.

With respect Franck, that's not a great deal different from what I said, you told Jacqui last Tuesday night at JJ's that you were going to train Nicola to operate the laptop and sound system, I didn't mention Nicola in my original post as I didn't want to be seen as letting any cats out of the proverbial bag.
I've known Nicola for about 8 years and already knew her as a fabulous line dancer before I started Ceroc, she's a determined lassie and I'm sure she'll do her utmost to succeed as a DJ, I hope she's given enough time to prove herself in what appears to be very turbulent Ceroc times.

It isn't a problem at all Steve, it simply refers to a previous post where I suggested Ceroc was ridding itself of "live" DJs such as Robert and John and not using DJ's at all, at some venues.
By the 100% positive posts regarding the demise of R'glen as a venue and Robert's decision to quit, I think Ceroc, as a business, just may regret this.

In case you think otherwise, I'm definitely NOT criticising Nicola in any way whatsoever and as I've clearly said in previous posts, I wish her every success at JJs.
I've also wished Robert good luck and success in his new ventures.

I'm sure that CJ will be missed by many.

Regarding Rutherglen (and I think I've managed to get there twice since it opened), it is a lovely venue as people have said.

However, I believe that the weekly numbers are around the 40-50 mark. That's how many were there when I got there last week. Compared with over 100 at JJ's most weeks as I understand it.

Hence, it will be interesting to see if Ceroc do indeed regret moving to JJs, or whether the night, being in the middle of the city and thus more accessible for a greater number of people, will also grow. However, I do understand that some people will miss the Rutherglen venue. Especially those that live on that side of Glasgow.

And I also wish Nicola all the best

Jacqui's working next Thursday night but me & Moira and all the other "old fogies" in our gang will be there to lend you as much support as we can.

Good luck and by the way, do you have any Patsy Cline tracks on your laptop, if you don't, ask if you can nick some of CJ's, I believe Crazy's great to dance to :D

However, I believe that the weekly numbers are around the 40-50 mark. That's how many were there when I got there last week. Compared with over 100 at JJ's most weeks as I understand it.

There were 78 there last Thursday and what a great night it was!
I wonder if that was a fluke or had the regulars and friends got past the financial hardships of Christmas and New Year and were starting to come back.

We'll never know

:yeah:

- and Tango de Roxanne, and Paradise By The Dashboard Light, and loads of others!

Sorry to see you go CJ - will miss your tunes - and your heckling anytime I'm on stage! (Especially the bootlaces! )

Will come along to Jax for your last night tonight. Although when I say 'last night', hopefully you won't be a stranger.

Best of luck in your post-Ceroc endeavours - hope everything works out well.

You'll be sorely missed.

All The Best,

PretzelMeister
