Think this will be a fab event ... anyone else thinking of going?

Some more event details:

The first ever UK WCS Dance Championships will take place in Weston-super-Mare from Friday evening 20th April through to the early hours of Sunday 22nd at the Winter Gardens.

Two US professional couples: PARKER DEARBORN & JESSICA COX together with ROBERT & NICOLA ROYSTON.
Alongside WCS workshops for beginners, improvers and intermediates there will also be INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED JIVE WORKSHOPS.

Am going to try and book a holiday apartment in Weston this time (B&B experience for big bang wasn't great!) ... anyone else want a place in a nice apartment if I find one? Hoping to get something for about £40-50 per person for 20th-22nd April.

PM me if you are interested!

I'm very interested in this event, have no idea of what accomodation options there are so any tips on that would be good.

Must get my act together and look at flights, get booked etc.

I really want to try and learn a bit more WCS, this would be ideal!

YEY - someone else wants to come :)

The accomodation in Weston appears to vary a lot - make sure you see photographic evidence that it isn't a dive!

PM me if you fancy sharing a holiday apartment and I can send you details when I get them!

I want to go

Currently investigating travel options (looks like Eastern Airways have direct flights from Aberdeen to Bristol, and not that expensive, so that might just be ideal  ).

I understand there's no party on the sunday night, but I assume there are workshops? Anybody knows at what time this might finish on sunday, so that I can sort the flight tickets out? :flower:

I'm interested in sharing a flat too, Suzy, will PM you about that when back in Scotland (2 weeks).

I don't think anything happens on the Sunday at the Weston Jive Addiction events. Just Friday night, workshops on Sat and then dancing until the wee small hours on Saturday night!

However, if we are in a self catering place we can surface when we like, have a good long brekkie before going home! If I can find a wooden floor we can even practice in the apartment

I kind of wanted to go to that.

Caro, I'll also be flying to Bristol, I think then its fairly easy by bus to WSM (I travelled via WSM en route from Breeze in Oct).

Is this the same date as the big Ceroc weekend party in Wales?

I kind of wanted to go to that.Yep, seems to be. But I'm doing Ceroc weekenders in March (Storm) and May (Blaze) so a WCS mini weekender is perfect for April.

With more events, there will be more clashes - but more choice. :D

Apparently its the biggest weekender at the 'flagship' Pontins venue. It seems Ceroc are going all out for that one as it is an anniversary for something or other- or so I have been told.
I was kind of looking forward to it.

The WCS weekend would be great but I have yet to be that inspired by visiting teachers' group workshops. For privates, if available, then yes its a great idea but I have been to a few 'masterclass' workshops that have been anything but.

Decisions decisions!!

I really enjoyed my visit to Weston last summer for the Big Bang. (I stayed at the Queenswood Hotel in Weston, and recommend it.)

I quite fancy this weekend, though I haven't kept up my WCS and I think I want to go to Ceroc Chill (http://www.ceroc.com/chill/) which is on the same weekend, so don't think I'll be doing it this time.

Hope it goes well though, and all you Westies have a good time. :)

Hope it goes well though, and all you Westies have a good time. :)Its not pure WCS though, I don't think. Its WCS and MJ. For me, I'm hoping it will be a good 'base' for getting properly started with WCS, while being able to relax and unwind with some MJ freestyle too.

Yup gonna get somewhere nearby with parking ... the flats I have my eye on are just 3-5 min walk along the sea front and have parking spaces.

Actually, it's not their 'flagship venue', at least Pontins don't refer it to being such!

And, we're not talking about huge workshops at Weston and, if you like WCS particularly it will be a fabulous event. And for Jivers, there will be specialists classes in how to incorporate Tango in your Jive repertoire amongst others.

From the website:

This weekend will be ideal for you to progress your WCS, with both our couples teaching from beginners through to novice/intermediate classes. So, if you’ve always wanted to try WCS you’ll never have a better opportunity and, if you’re seeking to improve your WCS technique and style well, you’ll be learning from the very best.

What about beginners? Would really like to try WCS but there are no classes up here that I can attend!Me too. I've done I don't know how many 'taster' classes at weekenders, also tried learning from a video at home - but I'm really a complete beginner. I'm hoping that I'll be able to do some sort of 'next step' type class, consolidate what I have learnt, and try some freestyle.

Actually no, we don't do things like that at Jive Addiction. Our dates at Weston-super-Mare were booked a long long time before 'Chill' came along and, indeed, correspond with the exact same weekend we were at the Winter Gardens in April 2006 for BIG BANG, as many forumites can evidence.

So, think again as to who might have orchestrated a clash.

Why not? (assuming it's true...) If you have booked the venue ages ago announcing it to your punters as soon as it's done gives them a 'heads up' and would enable them to reserve their judgment on booking an alternative weekender - surely that's just good business sense isn't it? Then when you have further details you flesh it out and start taking bookings.

But then as you have only announced it recently, from what I understand, it unfortunately points to the fact that it was all done last minute AND for a purpose.

Lets book an event and then keep it really quite until our competition announces their dates. Then we can annouce ours and if the dates clash we can blame them...errrr.....doesn't seem to make sense does it?!

SuzyQ

I appreciate knowing who the teachers are before I book.

I haven't booked a ceroc one cos they don't put any teacher info on their website. And I'm an avid supporter of Ceroc otherwise.

Certainly it might have been good business sense in hindsight for Jive Addiction to have announced it earlier (For example in light of Jamie's recent post).

It does however IMO seem rather wide of the mark to imply a deliberate clash by Jive Addiction; if you ask who a clash is likely most costly to.

I'd guess it isn't deliberate in either direction given the constraints of running such events.
I rather surprised though to see comments coming from the Ceroc side, given the balance of costs / benefits and it being Ceroc who have the totally new event.

Don't be surprised SuzyQ. Sadly, it's to be expected these days. The Forum aint what it once was!Indeed it isn't, it is a lot larger, has 10 times as many posts and events are discussed in an un-biased way with twice as many regular contributors...
All good events (including Southport events as well as other JiveAddiction holidays) are eventually discussed naturally on the Forum, but that is seemingly not good enough for some commercial operators who have tried to involve as many forumites as possible into posting adverts (including family members and crew pretending to be regular customers of their events to praise them). You might call it smart marketing, I call it the online equivalent of putting fliers on carparks outside local venues.

The Forum is a community of dancers and by definition we will discuss dance events (before and after they occur) but as advertising became more widespread last year, I could see it become un-manageable as an ever increasing number of promoters joined and realised the potential market exposure. Most promoters, after being politely told not to advertise have been contributing helpfully to the forum, others regretably decided they had a god-given right to push their events to everyone here and set out to break the rules and test the system for loop-holes.

SuzyQ, the thread title was changed to reflect the thread content. As everyone started discussing that they were going to Ceroc Bliss rather than the Weston WCS event, I updated the poll and thread title to reflect the situation, rather than deleting the thread which started as an advert.

SuzyQ, the thread title was changed to reflect the thread content. Lots of sense in that post about advertising etc, but I'm not sure about this point as changing thread titles to reflect content doesn't happen all the time - it normally tends to be that threads are split instead. Is this a new forum policy to change titles rather than split threads?

And, for the avoidance of any doubt whatsoever. I have absolutely no idea who SuzyQ [the original thread starter] is. The lady in question has no connection with Jive Addiction or my family whatsoever and it is grossly unfair for anyone to suggest otherwise.

This is going to sound strange considering I love WCS so much but I think I would like to go to Chill just as a way to say thankyou to the organisation that really got me into social partner dancing.
Before I started Ceroc I only danced with fixed partners in different styles. Ceroc opened up a whole new world for me so to be part of the 25th anniversary would be cool.

Is that crazy?

Is that crazy?

Not in the slightest. You can feel gratitude and loyalty to anyone or any organisation that you choose to. It is about YOUR feelings on this matter.

For me my gratitude to any dance organiser is expressed in the money that I give them (particularly if I make repeated trips to their events) and I can assure you that I have exactly as much loyalty to Ceroc as they have to me.

For me the choice is made by opportunity. I have the opportunity to go on very many MJ weekends during the year (many more than only 2 years ago) but so far I only have one WCS weekend event in this country to go to.

I am sure that Cerocs event in north wales will be a well organised success even if I decide to go somewhere else on this occasion.

I totally have no idea what you are talking about - I have been to 1 jive addiction event so far. I do not know the people who run them – in fact when I returned from big bang last year I posted a 'thank you for such a great event' message on the forum and used the wrong names for the organisers! (my first forum post by the way).

I like WCS and so I was pleased to see there was an event in the UK.

In my enthusiasm I hoped to share accommodation with other forumites (ooo that inclusive community spirit thing).

Franck - I am a Ceroc bod through and through - part of the crew at Fleet and might even go through CTA training in the future - and I'd not heard about Chill until Paul F's reply on the thread!! I have such respect for Ceroc I was even willing to kiss the shoes of the head forumite upon meeting him (even if he didn't dance with me) on Saturday - remember ;)?!.

I totally believe SuzyQ and I think that Franck has misjudged her motives here. On the plus side, I do think that discussing the two weekenders on the same thread is a very good idea because at the end of the day a lot of us are feeling torn between two great events.

If everyday punters cannot discuss which dance events they are going to on here without being accused of being related to John and Wes  , or being 'under their influence' - then what hope is there for this Forum?

We just want to talk about where we are intending to dance....

Not too much to ask surely?

Mentioning no threads, I would have thought 'talking about where we are dancing' is preferable to some of the other topics raised on here recently.

I dont have anything work related to do with John and Wes or Ceroc (anymore) but I love to go to the events I do.

I wont deliberately advertise events, but I like to know where my friends are going. I will try and get my friends to go to the same event as me.

For example.......

I really wanted to go to WCS weekend but Fletch doesnt have an Interest in WCS and it's her birthday weekend so - we go to the Ceroc one, We booked it months ago.

No matter how much respect I have for John and Wes or Ceroc I booked this first.

Hi everyone,
Just to let you know I've had a quote for some really nice apartments just along from the Winter Gardens (looks like a 3 min walk to me).
If you want to join a group of us then please let me know asap so I can keep hold of them - £20 per person per night if you are willing to share ... £40 per person per night if you want your own room.

SuzyQThanks for arranging, great location, and excellent price. :D

:flower:

Not sure if anybody is interested, but there was a suggestion this past weekend about getting a coach to take people down to WSM from Scotland, which could potentially make a pick-up stop part way down the M6. If you are interested, please drop me a PM in the next week and if there are enough, we can look into this.

P.S. I'll be at WSM; can't wait!

Paul & Cat devoted the middle 45 min class at Bisley to improving WCS competition technique ... and intend to do the same in March. The class was almost full, with over 25 couples!

At this point in time, this is only a rumour due to Jessica's pregnancy. I am having Parker & Jessica staying over and doing a workshop when they return in April and I can confirm that at this point in time, the current arrangements with Jessica are still a go. Will keep you updated of any changes. Either way, both the workshop in Edinburgh and WSM will be by top notch WCS teachers!

Not sure I like the sound of that - there would be no opportunity for follow up classes.

I've noticed that despite the capacity increase at Chill, Storm was advertised as having 40 workshops, while Chill only has 32.

While if you want to see people higher numbers are good, I'm not sure of the benefit for classes.

Still at least a DVD should be very viable.

I wouldn't have thought there would be one at West Coast Swing Jive, though being a competition I suppose it is possible.

Don't know, but there will be classes AFAIK in MJ and WCS so there may be a DVD. Whether a DVD is available or not doesn't influence what classes I do, though I guess it may be different as a follower. I know if a lead goes to a class at a weekender, learns some new moves they really like, having a DVD can be a useful reminder.

There were more rooms used for teaching at Storm. It might be that at Chill, there are less rooms available that are suitable for teaching in. Which would limit the number of workshops that could be available...

Jack & Jill - open to anyone
Novice Strictly Swing

Dance with a Stranger MJ

Who is going to be entering which category.... I will only be doing DWAS MJ but I was wondering if people have started practising yet!

Are all the westies going to enter the comps or will there be a lot of onlookers watching just a few??? I do hope there is a good take up..

Does prize money mean more people will compete or would you compete for fun anyway??

Only 3.5 weeks now till WSM and getting excited about this new UK event. It really will be the closest thing to a US convention that the UK has ever seen. In the US the main thing about these events is the social dancing which goes on all night which is the fun part of the event and is how people improve their WCS so much. The comps are not for everybody, but are something fun to break up the day and early evening allowing others to watch.

Are all the westies going to enter the comps or will there be a lot of onlookers watching just a few??? I do hope there is a good take up.

From what I've heard there should be a fair few entering the various categories, especially those who are just back from Boston who may now have the Jack & Jill bug.

I shall be entering the Jack & Jill as it is one of the most exciting categories, more so than a typical MJ lucky dip because you get several partners and have to adjust to each of them on the spot.

Have heard of a few that will likely enter the Open Strictly making it well worth watching and giving inspiration to the UKs WCS community.

Hope to see loads of you there as this will be the last UK event that Susan & I make it to before we pack our bags and move across the pond the following week.

Cheers,

Brady

I am not one for competitions...but I am curious how the Jack and Jill competition works. I have only ever seen Jack and Jill video clips on You-Tube and never really understood how the competition pans out.

How many Jacks does a Jill get?

Does she get a full song with each Jack?

How many Jacks does a Jill get?

Does she get a full song with each Jack?

It depends...

On how many entrants, how many rounds, how speedy the judges are, the particular format.

So you would certainly expect to get a different partner for each round of the competition, in some cases, or maybe especially in the first round, you'd expect to have 2 dances, so you'd get 2 partners.

For the top level of dancers in the USA, the finalists would normally get 2 minutes dancing on their own on the floor, and once all the finalists have danced, there is an "all skate" where they are all up on the floor at once.

I've no "inside information" so I don't know what the WSM format will be.

We had a Jack and Jill Competition at our Christmas Ball in Stirling.
During the first few rounds the competitors danced the entire track with one partner, the partners then switched, so you had a new partner for the next round.
In the final, each of the Jacks danced one track (about 1 and a half mins) with each of the Jills.

But think my parents wouldn't be too impressed if I b*ggered off all day, as they're coming over from Norway on Saturday to stay for 2 weeks, and I'm already going away for 8 of those days, leaving them to look after my dog.

Yep, normally every time I've done a J&J in the US I've danced at least 3 tracks in the first heat as there are many more couples on the floor in the first round so it takes the judges a bit longer to make their decisions.

Finals typically end up fixed partners through the leads drawing a follows name from a hat. Just had a look at the WSM rules and the finals will be done in spotlight format. It can be a bit intimidating, but it is also quite a lot of fun, not knowing who you'll draw or what music you'll get. Just think, it's the same for everybody else in the final!!!!

No need to get nervous, it's all for fun in the end. I like to use the J&J comp to meet a few new dancers that I might not otherwise have come across for a dance during the freestyle. After the comp it's always fun to go find those people again and have a relaxed freestyle dance in the evening. I'm going for the social dancing (please save me a dance Little Monkey!) and if I have a good dance during the comp then all the better!

See you there on Friday,
