Even though all of my work, and much of my leisure time involves playing – oops! – I mean working with computers and other random computery technology I can't be a geek.

I don't like all that Lord of the Ring fantasy nonsense, don't read or watch any Sci-Fi unless it's funny (e.g. Hitchhiker's or Futurama), and I have some fashion sense.

I don't even know why I'm posting on this thread...

Geek credentials?

Ok was Co-Sysop on a BBS Pre-WWW (well before the WWW was what it is today). Wrote my own door games.

Had a website called S*x-4-geeks a tongue in cheek mock-charity but was mainly a repository for geeky jokes, my computer programs etc.

Am a computer programmer / web designer for a living. I write applications for PC and PDA and am never far away from my IPAQ (my spare brain really)

I read math books for fun. I once calculated Pi to over 5000 decimal places over an annoyingly long time on my home PC because I felt like it.

Most of my books are either Sci-fi or fantasy or Computer/math books.

I (at last count) had 6 domains and associated websites on the go.

I have over 600 DVD's and a very nerdy habit of memorising most of the lines our of them. ( sorry)

I have 3 Slide rules, a 1940's AVO meter, an excessive number of very loud ugly shirts and far too many t-shirts imported from Think Geek in the USA.

I know my geek code. and I also know that the 8 numbers that make up my date of birth in ddmmyyyy format crops up at position 96,698,076 in Pi.

And I know allt he words (and sing along to) Three dead trolls in a baggie- "Every OS Sucks" and ''Weird Al'' Yankovic- "It's all about the Pentiums"

me a geek?

naw what gives you that idea? ;)

OK....

I have programed since the age of 7 (basic on Commodore +4 and Dragon 32)

Have a retro computer collection that includes Tandys, BBC's, Vax's and 'portable' computers (oh and a collection of green screens to go with them)

Do freelance IT work for a living. Mainly programming specialising in Sybase's Powerbuilder.

First games I wrote were based around the Ian Livinstone 'dice' books.

Was into Games Workshop figures.

Built a website on the Amiga 500 in 93 (though it was as a magazine distributed on floppy disk and advertised in the back of Micro Mart, if only we knew at the time what hyperlinks would lead to)

Have a collection of nearly 60 PC books.

Ran a bbs which my mum didn't know about (phone ringing all night everynight. lol)

First www experiance was through Compuserve.

Most played game Elite and Elite 2.

Heros include Geff Gammond, David Bremmer, Peter Molynoux and the Darling brothers (codemasters)

Once made a USB controller for the kitcken taps and toaster. Why I wanted to plug a laptop in to the kitchen taps I don't know. Seemed a good idea at the time. Annoyed then Girlfriend though.

Set up windows 2003 server at home as a domain controller, then connected one pc.

i wrote my first text adventure game on a spectrum 48k in Basic - it was set in my primary school.

i have connected at 300 baud and can REALLY appreciate broadband ;)

i made good use of Blue Boxing when it was still possible and frequented many a US based BBS, for free of course, in the early 90's -
the malaysian operator got very annoyed if you accidently missed the change over

i was co-sysop of a BBS in Swindon, of all places

i ran a public domain library and computer hardware business in 1994

i wrote my first commercial website in 1995 for a BBS company who were expanding onto the web for the first time.

i build all my PCs and have more spare bits than i know what to do with - i have about 6 or 7 pcs
and 4 laptops

i still have 2 Amiga 4000s - the graphics card for the 4000 cost me £450 - this was in 1997

i currently teach and consult on a variety of IT areas ranging from HTML through SQL , Business Intelligence and Oracle DBA.

i own a t-shirt with the slogan "404 shirt/tie - not found" on it :)

Ok.. I have a confession to make. I did that a while ago. Out of curiosity about how long it would take now, I had a plunder round in my source code archives (I have a 100 GB usb HDD that I carry with me with archives of my archives of my archives... I never know when I might need to reuse some source)

Found the source, couldn't compile (or more aptly.. couldn't be bothered to compile). Considered wasting more time at work re-writing it, but decided to have a look for source on-line first.

I've just beat my current "record" I just calculated 2 million digits of Pi in 2 minutes and 5 seconds  Makes me think 2 things...

I bow before Dreadful Scathe, Beowulf1970 and woodface's impressive curricula. My path may not quite match theirs, but hey, it's about joining in, isn't it?

- Geek test = 40.5%
- First computer: ITT 2020 in 1979 (7 yo), the only Apple II clone. Started programming at that time as well
- First major computer: Apple II, 16ko RAM extended to 64ko, with a yellow monitor and 4.5 inch soft floppies... Which I still have !
- Cowrote a winning scenario (Compatible Rolemaster-Cthulu-ADD2) competition for a national French RPG magazine
- Spent about a year with my mother (math / programming teacher) and uncle trying to find an algorithm for prime numbers (before it was proved that there was none). Spent some time on Fermat's theorem. Finished 2nd of a math competition with 3,000 participants
- First Internet experience: 1995 though Compuserve
- Have an online server under my staircase
- 3+ computer per person in my home
- Cofounded a 100% Linux and open source operated company in 1999
- Appeared in a national French Linux magazine as one of the promoters of open source (part of a 4-page article, with front photo of me. My mom was soooo proud)
- Passed the pre-Mensa test successfully
- Was hired as technical advisor for a bestselling book on cybercrime (for which I am mentioned in the Credits page) and a film series where Internet was involved
- Pride myself of owing rare IT tshirts, for example a limited edition released for the launch of Widows 2000 in Israel
- Work as IT consultant specialised in customer relationship management projects.

....And one or two other things that I wouldn't dare to confess here...

Which turned out to be a cable fault:what:.

Of course, the algorithm makes a difference as well.

I don't know what algorithm you used in the past, but I would guess it was based on one of the arctangent formulae (e.g. PI = 16 * arctan(1/5) - 4 * arctan(1/239)). To calculate pi to n digits, these require O(n) terms, and calculating each term takes time O(n), so the total calculation takes O(n^2). That is not going to allow you to calculate 2 million digits in 2 minutes on a current day computer.

There are modern methods that can calculate PI to millions of digits using only tens of terms (O(log n)). The only problem is that you have to be able to do "proper" n-digit multiplication, division, and square roots. Which is quite a lot more programming work, but can be done in O(n log^k n)).

Invented the x-bit hack in apache.
Own an Enterprise 64 (with serial number 42! :D)
Extended the ZX Spectrum's command library with a few of my own for manipulating microdrive cartridges in interesting ways.
Wrote my first program at school and "saved" it onto paper tape.
Wrote a complete Manic Minor clone for the ZX Spectrum.
Have a credit in a few Unix books, including "Unix Power Tools".
Wrote the first "MacEyes" application (complete with shaped window) for the Mac, back in the '80s.
Can still remember some Z80 op-codes – 205 is CALL, for example.
Was on usenet before "the great renaming".
Have had games I co-wrote for the Spectrum and Enterprise published. (Nothing you'd have heard of though. ;))
Was on the internet in '89, and created my first web site in '94.

I have vague memories of many other geek-related activities in my youth that I will not confess to here. (Oh, and some I remember well, but still do not wish to publicise. :D)

Thank you... Alright then... time to flash some geek cred.

After I got attacked, I was allowed to borrow a netcam from work for a while. I wrote a quite quick script that grabbed stills from the webcam (every 10 seconds so not exactly a cron task). Every 2 hours it turned the stills into an mpeg and cleared them down. That was done on heavy medication.

I got sick of having to authenticate on the linux boxes at work and the escala's as well as the 'doze stuff so I mucked around with stuff until I manages to hack up a unified authentication system that works on everything.

First computer a ZX80 in 1980. The ZX-81 followed and included the 16Kb RAM pack sellotaped hard on to the back to prevent random crashes. Then a Spectrum that got the conversion to the better casing. Onwards.. I headed down the Atari route ending up on an ST. My first PC was quite a bit later entering with a 486DX33.

Currently the LAN at home has just the 5 machines on it. 2 Linux boxes and 3 Windows.

At work, when I started 3.5 years ago, we had 2 Bull Escalas and a Novell 4.11 Pentium Pro thing that had been built by an idiot and abended when you thought about it too hard.

We currently run a small Citrix farm, a large integrated financial system that hooks in to everything throughout the factory and back-ends on to Oracle. Exchange for internal mail and that includes push technology running to the smartphones for the sales force. Heavy spam filtering at the borders to keep the internet safe from being exposed to Exchange servers. 'Doze 2003 for most of the other stuff. Firewall-1 at the very border hanging off a bonded DSL connection (prior to my starting it was a 64K leased line costing £££££££). The Citrix stuff can be accessed anywhere in the world over secure connections. Any server suffers a big problem and it emails us. I have an intranet in place that the users can't see that gives me all kinds of stats about stuff like mailbox sizes and home area sizes.

BOFH

My boss likes subtle style. Our standard password scheme is to require some complexity and a change every 60 days with a minimum of 8 characters. There's a dictionary plugged into it and some cleverness. It'll reject 'password1' out of hand. Our current most annoying user needs an 11 character password and gets to change it every 25 days.

Oh.. and I finished Half Life 2 in 4 days.

How do you suggest the selection should be made?
- Using the Geek test (http://www.innergeek.us/geek.html) or something?

I thought I'd add that I don't think that test is very good though. It's not even weighted (well unless you consider everything being a weight of 1 weighted). So watching The Matrix scores you as much as, say, collecting dirt.

Ah well.

I voted for myself on the geek test because I didn't want 0%. In retrospect I should have voted for Princess Fi who represents the true geek in all of us.

I have not got a problem with admitting to being a geek. Not only do I like science fiction and computers, I readily admit to having a well-above-average spec machine 60% of the time (the other 40% spent researching, saving and building the next machine).

I also have been known to spend way more time than is good for me playing World of Warcraft, in addition to researching the class I am playing in order to get the best out of it/own at PvP.

Believe it or not, I also have a very understanding girlfriend.

Anyone who wants a pop online, give me a shout.

Dear Caro/Claire/Twirly* Delete as appropriate

A day without your smile is like a year with out seeing the sun. My heart a frozen tundra devoid of warmth. Although others may smile at me, theirs provide no warmth.. only your smile is the promise of Spring,

A day without hearing your voice is like a year without sound. My ears devoid of bird song, and music , the gentle babbling of a brook and the contented gurgles of a baby. Although others speak to me their words are empty and lacking meaning, dessicated and dry.. only your voice is the angelic choir that lifts my spirits and sends my soul soaring.

A day without your touch is a day without comfort ,my heart knows no rest, and my nights give no peace. Although others may touch me their touch is like hot coals or ragged sharp metal pressing into my flesh. Only your touch can soothe my aches and pains.

A day without your smell is like.. erm. is like  .. can I pass on this one?

A day without the taste of your sweet lips is like a year without food. An all consuming hunger ravages my body, and I know no satisfaction, A hunger that cannot be satiated and a thirst that cannot be quenched. Only your lips and relive me from this torment. only your lips provide me with the nectar and ambrosia I crave (no.. NOT rice pudding!! )

A day without you in my life is no life at all. :awe:
