Limited range of options but who cares, that's what the 'Other - see below' option is for. Maybe one of the friendly Legion of Moderators could add things I have missed into the poll after the event?

Uh huh. Lot closer to home this weekend for me too.

Going to the Masked Ball in Brechin on Saturday night. Suppose that I should maybe look into getting a mask for that. Then no-one will recognise me! :innocent:

Thinking about possibly going through for the WCS on Sunday. If there's anyone from Dundee that wants to drive - I'm fed up of driving after last weekend! Or maybe I'll have a nice quiet day at home :D

11th-December-2006, 02:27 PM
There's also a Masked Ball at Route66 in Edinburgh this Friday, and a WCS Christmas party in Edinburgh on Sunday. And I'll miss both! :tears:

Oh well, at least I'm going to the Christmas party at Bookham this Saturday, and the Jango t-jive on Sunday. Hope to se LOTS of my favourite dancers this weekend!

There's no room for sentiment now you're a dancer Nicola.

Just pop your head round the door, wave to your mate, shout "See ya xxxxxx", blow her a kiss, leg it back to your car and get yourself off to dancing.....:D

It got very hot indeed, particularly in the little store room to the rear of the blues room (it was full of so many hundreds of stainless steel tea sets that there was no room to manoeuvre!).

Fletch. Awesome dances as always. Thanks babe. And only one dance with Rubyred :( I couldn't find her later for the rematch. She was probably hiding. :P

All we need to do now is get Roy to book the room opposite and put a blues room in there. Now that would be a great idea. :)

Need to thank Trampy for playing fab music for me, Jane for doing all the hall decorations and both sets of parents for all their help.

This was the first party that I have organised and I am very pleased but exhausted. :respect: to Franck for doing this several times a year.

I hope everybody had a good time and roll on the next one!!!

Thank you for all the dances I had, especially Dunk. Pleased to meet you at last and a pleasure to dance with you. :flower:

Lotsa love lorna x-x

Lost my Hammersmith Virginity. Was a great night.

Stayed upstairs most of it as music was more my thing but did venture in to the blues room to watch some of the forumites that converged there. Some (staying nameless) were brill .

Is it always that busy there? Great floor upstairs, Just ashame alot of it was taken by people standing around talking . Have taken to gently nudging people who do that..

Does it always go on till 2am?

Does it always go on till 2am?

No – normally 1am.

Didn’t get there till quite late though, unfortunately, I wasn’t impressed with Saturday, and I’ve taken to being a Hammersmith regular. It was like an overcrowded sauna upstairs. I expected it to be busier than normal, but I didn’t expect them to do away with that big fan they normally have drawing cold fresh air from outside to circulate near the stage. :really: Why?

Still, I had a reasonably good time – wasn’t dancing my best though. :( Still a bit off colour and haven’t been going as regularly as I used to because of being ill. And new shoes and blisters… :tears:

Had hoped to meet a few more forumites, but it was great to meet the few that I did – and thanks MissyD for being my one-woman introduction agency! I did venture down to the blues room, but didn’t dance and so went back upstairs. I didn’t see anyone I knew apart from Witty and PaulF and didn’t have the confidence to ask anyone to dance down there, having only been in a blues room once before at Camber.

I have a feeling we danced at one point, or at least I think I saw you upstairs. I spent most of the night in the back right of the hall near the main exit.

It was really hot upstairs and didn't really enjoy the floor downstairs. Will def be up for going again though.

I ended up going to Hammersmith on Saturday and found it to be, well, not too bad.

The upstairs floor was a nice speed for me. I didnt notice too many canyon-like holes which I noticed the last time.
It was busy but I expected that. Unfortunately the floorcraft was still lacking.
The music upstairs was ok. Pretty standard Ceroc fare but as expected. I quite enjoyed it really.

Downstairs was a decent room. Sound quality wasnt the best but the music was good. The floor was pretty diabolical early on. Its that certain amount of resistance when you try and lift you're foot off the floor that always concerns me. HOWEVER, this was dealt with after someone mentioned it to the organisers. Can't say fairer than that. It wasn't in any way fantastic to dance on but the effort was put in. In fact it reminded me of the time someone complained of a spillage at the Storm Ceroc Weekender. Within seconds the crew were out putting it right. Very respectable.

I didnt really notice the heat too much either which is unusual for me. Maybe its because I didnt dance every track or it might have been due to the icy wind outside :nice:

There was 1 big downside for me though. I paid £16 to get in. Thats £15 standard entry + £1 because I never carry one of my many Ceroc cards with me.
I had to ask myself was this event worth the considerable extra amount over other 2 room events. I have to say a resounding no - although I did not participate in the complimentary food and drink so this may have clouded my judgement.

Overall quite a good night but very expensive.

Is it normally that price? It's norm a tenner or so isn't it?

If thats the case then £10 for 6 odd hours of dancing isn't bad in the scheame of things. It was pretty hot upstairs and quite busy till after 1. Was cooler downstairs but that wasn't really my thing and was still crowded and was a poor floor.

The dancers seemed to be of a good mix in standard. The music seemed to be a good mix and the people seemed friendly enough. Can't really ask for more.

Yep, £10 (I thought it was going to be £12 as it was for the first two "parties" I went to there earlier this year, Valentine's and St Patrick's Day - £15 was a bit of a shock, though as we arrived at 11, it was £13 I think). £8 if you arrive at 10.15 or later normally, which is still OK if you're dancing till 1.

To paraphrase The Great Terry:

Everyone has a conditional clause in their life, some little unspoken addition to the rules like, "Except when I really need to," or "Unless no one is looking," or, indeed, "Unless the first one was a nougat." DavidJames had for years embraced a belief in the sanctity of all life and the ultimate uselessness of violence, but his personal conditional clause was, "But not the waistcoat. No one disses the waistcoat, okay?"

Hiya All,

I'm happy to say I really enjoyed Hammersmith on Saturday!

IMHO Good value for money - £15 - for a London dance, 2am fini, 2 rooms - Mark F on the decks downstairs for chrissakes! Good quality nibbles, loads of friendly people with a good mix of abilities etc etc.....

2am came far too quickly - a sure sign of a good varied night.

But boy - What with Oxford the night before as well - did we pay for it on Sunday! Hanging at Jango unfortunatley - and didn't dance all that well at all. Had a nice time tho watch other enjoying themselves.

I went to hammersmith on Saturday and had a fabulous time !!

Spent most of my time in the blues room, which was fab once they got the floor sorted as the music Marc was playing was gorgeous...

I also spent time upstairs, and had some lovely dances to some lovely (but more up beat) tracks... Loved the floor upstairs although some were saying it was too slippery....

Enjoyed the champagne on arrival, a few nibbles, and some choccies later...
Didn't think it was bad value actually...

Had a dance with DJ, he didn't seem too grumpy at that point (I think he might even have smiled), but maybe I was blinded by the sparkly waistcoat...

Sorry to hear that Missy!

Never nice when get refused on the trot like that. I've only had that at small provincial dances - where the local female even look you up and down in a disparaging manner - I mean - Pleeeease - get over yourself!

In a large dance like hammersmith - I suppose the best thing is when refused - go to the other side of the floor - and ask someone else from a different crowd.

I was only refused a few times later on in the evening - when the ladies were clearly cream crackered - heels throbbing etc...

Best to ask your favorites early! It only takes one or 2 dances to make the night memorable!

Martin

PS:
I was at the front at one point, a nice elderly lady asked me to dance - But I really needed a drink/towel down.

Didn't want to be a front row "no go" - so I grabbed her hand, took her to my seat, sat her down and chatted while I sorted myself out - then had a dance with her! hehe

Saturday 16th - Bookham.
Had a fab night! Danced with lots of new people (well, had to , really, as I didn't know many people there!), no refusals, no bad dances. Thje swing and blues room was too swingy for my liking, but there was a big crowd of lindy-hoppers there, and the dj was trying to please everyone. He definitely made up for it by giving us 4 tango tracks at the end of the evening, though!

Also had so many compliments for my dancing that my head swelled up, and I had to go home and pop it at the end of the night. :D

Oh, and the food...... So much of it, and so much yummy stuff!!! Lots of CAKES. They had to put four big tables together to get space for all of it, and it was still completely packed full of goodies!

Sunday 17th - Jango t-jive.
Another fab dance! Great music, great dancers, good floor, scrummy CAKES. Again, danced with lots of lovely people, and lots of people I've never danced with before. Oh, and lovely to meet and dance with NZ Monkey!

Again - so many compliments for my dancing that head needed deflating when I got home.

Monday 18th - The Final MELTDOWN!
WOW! What a night! Fantastic music, and absolutely spoilt for choice with great dancers! My hightlight was a fabulous dance with Amir, followed directly by an equally fab dance with Paul F! Oh, and lots of kisses (due to some mistletoe that Amir supplied!)

We also had a guest slot by DJ Kenobe!

Oh, and did I mention the CAKES? I contributed a chocolate and cointreau cake, and someone else made a SCRUMMY cheesecake ('twas to die for!). And there were gooey chocolatey flapjacky things, and lots of other savoury and sweet nibbly things. Yummy!

And again I received so many compliments that my head needs severe deflating. Starting to get quite sore because of the need to puncture it every night! You're very kind, guys, but my poor head just ain't used to it!

Thanks to everyone who came along to make the evening such a great success, to everyone who brought food, and to everyone who kindly danced with me.

Well, it was a swing and blues room, but was quite heavy on the fast swing stuff. And I don't do lindy or anything like that, just wcs and jive... Although did dance to a few of the fast swing tracks, in a lindy/swing style jive (did my best, anyway!). Personally I'd have liked to hear more blues and more wcs music, but there was a big crowd of lindy-hoppers there, and the dj had a hard time trying to cater for all the different groups of dancers, all wanting different music!

Still, had a fab time, and will definitely go back! And if you've not been yet, you should definitely give it a try.

A "Swing and Blues" room? What's that all about then? :what:

Why not have a "Disco and Classical" room, that makes just as much sense musically.

I guess the answer is that it's a token effort to appeal to two other groups of non-standard-MJ dancers, without having to actually provide separate rooms.

I remember the so-called "swing and blues" room at MJC this year - no bl00dy Blues, that's for sure...

I can imagine it was a nightmare for the DJ!
To my mind music for lindy and music for WCS just don't belong together.
And Blues music tends to mean different things to lindy,MJ and WCS dancers.
...the post by DavidJames kind of proves my point!

I think that Franco probably started off the 'swing and blues' idea together, at the Camber weekends. Certainly, that was where I first came across the idea - about 7 years ago.

I don't agree that there's as much diversity between them as there would be between Disco and Classical. But I think that you already knew that really. A lot of people just play slow swing as blues music, as indeed so do I. But I think that blues is a lot more than just that.

And yes, some DJs will tend to play a lot more swing in a "swing and blues" room than others. There are a couple who will tend a lot more to the blues end though :flower:

And it's only fairly recently that WCS has started to have an impact. The number of people is still pretty low really though. But it should be sort of possible to satisfy all 3 groups with a bit of thought and savvy. Provided none wanted their music exclusively (fat chance?) - although, it doesn't sound like that happened for LM.
