View Full Version : So how many MJ venues have you danced at in UK?

mick s
6th-December-2006, 08:05 PM
The three nights a week theme has got me wondering how many venues are there are to dance MJ in UK?

Across all the MJ dance organisations. (Best avoid WCS and Lindy & weekenders to make it manageable).

I think there are 158 for Ceroc

I was also wondering who has danced at the most amount?

Could be a good charity activity (for some dance crazed do gooder)!

Off the top of my head my dance list is. (inc Non ceroc *) = 43

How may letters of Alphabet have you covered?

I have done 19, need to do F,I,J,P,Q, X,Z may struggle with a couple of these.

Oh god. I'm not sure that I'm going to ever be able to remember everywhere.

Yours seem to include a lot of different places in London. Does that mean that we put all the different places we've danced in all the other different towns too? Or does 'Aberdeen' only count once, even if you've danced at 4 different class nights there?

Inverness – Waterside Hotel *
Aberdeen – Beach Ballroom **
Aberdeen – Northern Hotel **
Aberdeen – Douglas Hotel
Aberdeen – Station Hotel
Aberdeen – Jumpin' Jak's *
Kirriemuir – Thingmy Hotel
Dundee – Millennium Hall **
Dundee – Bonar Hall **

131. The ones marked * are non-Ceroc. The ones marked ^ I've taught and/or DJ'd at. I didn't bother breaking down the cities into different venues in most cases. But if I've been to Ceroc, and non-Ceroc events in both, then I've included them twice.

And I know I've missed lots. But I'm not going any further than that. Rep to anyone who can point out any place that I've missed...

Oh, and Funky Lush (Southall), Meltdown (Kent House), Jango (Philbeach Hall), Ashtons, Twyford, BFF (Ealing), Bookham, Greenwich, Daventry, Putney, two Ceroc venues in London that I've totally forgotten the names of (it was over 5 years ago, when I was a newbie), Walthamstow... I've probably forgotten some!

That's 41 so far....

Oh, and lots of places in Norway, of course. (Lots of venues in Oslo, plus Moss, Askim, Drammen, Skien, Spydeberg, Kristiansand, Sogne.... etc etc)

I'll be lying awake all night now, trying to remember all the other places I've been dancing!

And I'm hoping to add a few more places to my list in the next few weeks.:D

I've only been to 11 different venues; makes me feel quite inadequate... :worthy:

What are the two furthest apart MJ venues - I've done Inverness to Brisbane? Which is the most southerly venue in NZ?

(I have to say that Inverness was the friendliest venue I've ever been to - is it worth starting another thread nominating the venue with the best welcome to newcomers?)

Dunedin or Queenstown. Not quite sure which is the furthest south. Dunedin is probably the furthest from the UK though, as it's further east as well....

I also went to another one outside London with Trampy. Will gave me a lift but can't remember the name. Robert Cordoba taught a class with Lily.

One more, again can't remember the name. Eric was djing and Bobgadget, i think. The venue knew we were coming and a lot of people dressed up in tartan and they played some scottish music for us at the end. One of the best nights I have ever had!!! Must have been a Friday night.

So, about 31 venues. There may have been others but can't think of them.

I would like to add on this thread - that when I was travelling and stayed over night I was a little nervous going to an unknown place as a lone female, I would ring the venue manager (mostly ceroc venues) and let them know I was in the area and they welcomed me at the door and introduced me to the taxi dancers and made me feel very welcome. Uxbridge One place I have to go to some time as its a good friend's regular venue.

Some places i have been to more than one venue but i can't be bothered to work out that. I could add on a couple more NI 'venues' as in different places I have danced MJ - back when I was organising parties etc. But I'm not counting those as mostly one offs.

In the lands of the North, where the Black Rocks stand guard against the cold sea, in the dark night that is very long the Men of the Northlands sit by their great log fires and they tell a tale...

They tell the tale of Trousers who started dancing and who reached a point, as we all do, where the most important thing in his life was not the people he knew, nor the job he did, nor indeed the care of his children but, the venue of his next dance excursion.

Trousers at that time, a mere yearling, yearned for the dance, the interaction with the totty, yearned indeed for something more interesting to do so he could switch off the telivision set and be doing that fabled 'something more interesting' himself! So Trouser's overdosed in jive! Every works meeting was planned around a new venue, a new night. Every weekend that he was free was a hunt for the pearl in the jive freestyle oyster bed of life. Trouser's lived the life of the Modern Jive addict. He even bagged himself a venue list for the Uk and started diligently ticking off the entries like a train spotter bags bug units. Then tempted to support a mate in who was in the Ceroc Champs Trousers' first encountered Trampy. At that time a mere baldy git who could spin his lady well but the 15 spins from a corner to the centre of the floor sort of made a point. Then a few weeks later the same guy in Nantwich was seen, ok still folically challenged but only at the bar! Then a few weeks later I'm sure Nottingham fell prey to his appetite for jive. Trousers' realised then that his own minor world tour was a mere bagatelle compared to this hairsless jiving demon. So he stopped counting!

Over the past 12 years I have definitely been to a great deal of venues - many when I was travelling plus most on the South coast. I try to get to most of the venues on my list so I can give a personal view of them.

So it is a little different for me, sorry to be a party pooper, but I really don't have the time to try and think of them all - too much to do this time of year !!!

No more lonely nights in strange hotel rooms

Now that's being REALLY welcoming to visitors!

I have got to a mere 52 easily, and am now struggling with the one-offs. Like MM I have better things to do.

BTW Bognor Regis Modern Jive ?? The only class I know of there is run by a chap called Nigel - and it is very small, he only has about a dozen people - whereas in Chichester (just down the road) there are a couple of MJ classes

I've danced in most venues in Scotland, although not recently. Ive also danced in a good few in London , the Manchester area and Reading area. Ill guess at around 50 or so, but Id need to think hard to name them, and I cant do THAT on a Sunday. [or at all, some would say]
