View Full Version : Best Dancers

Who makes the best dancer?

Does a job affect dancing ..... either because you are in a boring job and dancing is your release or you are in a wild job and dancing enables you to wind down? Pick a career that in your experience seems to produce the best dancers (ive not included dance teachers, pick something else :) ) - only pick your own job if you can truthfully say that most of the best dancers you meet are also in that profession :).

This is of course 100% serious and Franck may in future charge people in the 'lesser' jobs to enable them to post to the forum ;). After all, your comments would be less important :).

(yes I meant to put in more jobs but i pressed RETURN by accident and you cant edit the poll once its up.....Franck, help! :) )

DS,

By the same token, would those in 'greater' jobs get paid to share their words of wisdom and thoughts??:)

Now don't be silly, DS said you couldn't vote for yourself and your own profession, although most of the accountants I've danced with are awfully good:kiss:

I must be one of those accountants who get underpaid:( as not many pennies, and even less after next Tuesday when I leave my job:sad:

I thought you were going to accept my offer and come and sit beside me and pick up all the things I accidentally drop under the desk. I can go to £45 grand and can offer "CIMA Executive Support, CA" on the business cards.

Lots of nice perks too.:innocent:

Oh, has to be the vampire slayer. All that sneaking about, staking folk through the heart calls for nimble footwork, accuracy and not being frigthened of getting up close:wink: The garlic could be a slight downside!

But what does best dancers means?

Technical perfection?
Surely the more you practice the better you became technically.

Are we talking about emotion?
That only depends from the kind of person you are, how expressive you are and the mood you are in during a particular night. Maybe people used to express their emotions (or even fake ones! ) like actors are better at it but even then that is very subjective.

Musical interpretation?
Don't think you can say there are a wrong and a right way of interpreting music. Everybody "feels" the music in a different way; even different musicians have different interpretations of the same song. (Extreme case: look at Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics and Marilyn Manson!!)

To cut the story short, I don't think there is any connection between your job and how you dance!

The accountant thing may be a bit tongue in cheek but I think there may be some truth behind it.

I was lucky enough to dance with Gus a few months ago (apparently he's an accountant) and he was brilliant.

Also I've just been to the Anzac Ball and I saw Nigel for the first time and he was incredible. I was told he is an accountant as well.

This may just be co-incidence. Does anyone else have any theories?

For all it's meant to be a non-manual profession I would have to also say that most of the ones I've danced with are pretty good with their hands too.....(and their knees I suppose).

Yeah, think you are right in that accountants are incredible dancers. Accoutants are actually tremendous at most things they put their minds to and the reputation they sometimes earn as being boring generally are only directed at them from those people who are jealous of them:wink:

Thank you for backing up the "not boring" thing. Some of us have amazingly fertile imaginations.

On the terminology thing some of you may have heard of 'window dressing '...and think it refers to manipulating the balance sheet - wrong - that's all about how to put one's sheer white shirt and little blue skirt suit and heels on to best effect while backlit.....

Have been accused of window dressing in my time, but have no re-collection of ever wearing such an attire!

Back to topic,

Am surprised that no-one has voted for teachers yet as can think of several with teaching background from the Dundee area that are very, very good. Perhaps the problem is that when at the dancing you don't know everybody's profession and thus you are unable to make such a correlation.

sorry, should have been more explicit ( as if ) I know it's a long time since you did your training and it will have slipped your mind by now -but you're getting confused - remember when they split the girlaccountants up from the boyaccountants and they taught us the windowdressing and taught YOU the windowUNdressing - at least they did in CIMA - did you go to the wrong class??or was it different in woosy CA world????

Does that mean you're into bacteria as well as Quantum Physics:D

But seriously people, In my limited experience I have found that modern jive seems to attract alot of what I would call professional career people, Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants, Medical people, I.T specialists, teachers etc. I find that there are very few people in manual jobs like little old me and most people I meet at work think I'm a very unlikely dancer.
Maybe it has something to do with patterns of stress in diferent jobs and the actual hours of work people keep.
The Vampire Slayers obviously have the hours of darkness in their favour.

Well Sarah, you're obviously very lucky as both Gus and Nigel are great dancers. Indeed, as has been said many times on this forum , Nigel is ( IMHO) one of the best dancers in the country and along with Viktor is one of my heroes.

The women around Manchester have the good fortune of having Gus around to dance with whenever they want although now he is in employment he has a little less time than he did to get round the clubs.

Does this make accountants the 'best' ????

Well, Matt (Head of Blitz) is an ex-accountant, Lilian (mother of PunkFish and an excellent demo and dancer in her own right) is another accountant.

However, I seem to remember that when I was still in the Ceroc Teacher Association seeing the emial list and a significant number of the teachers seemed to work for either Oracle or PWC consulting....... draw your own conclusions.

Just a few thoughts on why people from some professions may be good

Accountants - rich, can afford to go to any and all workshops
Lawyers - as per accountants
Teachers - so much free time that they can use to practice
Scientists - clever people, have no problem working out how to dance well

But the best dancers don't come from any particular profession - they are just the ones who learnt to dance at the age of 5 instead of waiting until they became adults.

Grant
PS. Expecting howls of outrage from the accountants and lawyers who think they are as clever as any scientist. :D
And from teachers who don't think they have plenty of free time.:D
