and even if it worked it would just direct us to many discussions with a few good posts invaded by fluffy bunnies, chocolate, and less loveable things.

The beginnings of an idea for others to work into something actually practical.

The star rating system doesn't seem to get used much on the technical threads.

Is there a way of maybe having a sticky thread where people who have found something useful on the search engine could post the link and a sentence describing it.

Or a mirror collection of 5 star technical threads that the moderators had been through and editted out the fluff.

Something like that

Any ideas?

I think what you're looking for - and I've had similar thoughts - is effectively a knowledge base; an archive of useful material.

As the forum gets bigger and bigger (did I mention that we're over 300K posts now? :innocent), there is more and more useful legacy information. Of course, there's also more and more useless waste-of-space information to wade through to find it...

Bottom line is - there's no easy way to extract the useful stuff, you've got to wade through it still.

However, it might be nice to store the results of data-mining, so that the hard work doesn't have to be repeated. Sharing "bookmarks", for example.
