View Full Version : Dancing: 3 categories?

Up until recently, I'd categorised partner dancing into "social" and "competitive".

Now, after watching the showcases on SCD, I'm wondering whether there should be 3 categories instead:

Social: dance with anyone, to any music, completely improvised, with lead-and-follow / connection being the most important thing.

Competition: dance with (probably) regular partner, to any music, employing specialist moves but generally to a fluid routine. Connection still important, but visual impact also a priority.

Showcase: dance with regular partner, to a specific track, to a fixed routine. Visual impact and choreography the most important things.

Given the increase in showcases, do people think it's sensible to split dancing into these categories? Or are there even more you can suggest?

Competition and Showcase are both fairly similar though. I'm not sure whether I might not prefer Showcase style dancing to be lumped into the Competition type because it's 'competitive' in nature. So really they're just different types of competition, like 'weekly classes' and 'freestyle evenings' are different types of social dances.

But not having been to any of these things (just seen the vid clips) I could be wrong :-)

My three categories would be:
Play - dance like no-one is watching, and hope nobody was.
Art - dance in the music, and hope, but not until afterwards, that it was worth watching.
Performance - dance for an audience.

I used to think that, but now I think they're different enough to be seen as distinct categories. Choreography being the main skill area for showcasing, which isn't so important for other forms.

So is DWAS competition or social ... or does it deserve a category of its own, since it's actually both?

Perhaps the two categories should be, choreographed and freestyle. Both of which can be done both socially and competitively.

I personally distinguish between SOCIAL and PERFORMANCE dancing.

What about the people who are doing choreographed stuff in freestyle competitions. How about a category for them? :flower:

Are they meant to do that?

Yeah, I've got just the category for them...
