Anybody else play this fantastic game? Took me a while to actually start playing it, but I do now.

Currently got a level 35 night elf hunter on the Darkspear Server. Also a level 17 Human Paladin on Eonar server.

Who's with me? :waycool:

'Tis an evil game.

It's the only game I now where hard-core players advice is not to start, because it's too good. I have actually seen this game destroy real relationships.... because my mates girlfriend was playing it too much!:what:

I've been on the wagon for 8 months now and I still get withdrawl symptoms :tears:

Good thing my PC's too underpowered to run it. Especially considering that I'm off work for two weeks shortly.

[EDIT] Just found out it'll run just fine on my Mac.

Yeah, I've heard that too. But I'm not that sad to play it all the time - I meant most nights I'm out with my mates and dancing and stuff. But its a nice game for when I do have a free evening and I can't be bothered to go out.

Fortunately, its helpful in some cases. For example my sister and her bloke. They are quite busy and due to them travelling for work every day they find it too much hassle to go out in the evenings. So they actually play WoW together as a team (and thus my second character of a Paladin on the Eonar server where they play).

I once met a guy who played it non stop. His character even had a girlfriend within the game. More scary than that was that he wasn't even faithful to her and cheated on her with other women within the game!

I escaped from Championship Manager a couple of years ago and its a constant battle not to just go and buy the latest version of that!

If I played Warcraft I wouldn;t be able to stop until I'd achieved complete world domination which given the scale of the game would take me a million years so I think I'll stay away....

I did play GuildWars with Tessalicious on a few occasions before I went to Oz. But it seems that she's transferred her loyalties....'Fraid so - GW gets very lonely to play when you don't know anyone, cos the design of the game means you can't just bump into people hunting the same things.
I might just have to bite the bullet, and get WoW too..... :waycool:So you should - but play on Lightbringer so I can help you get started. You don't even have to pay monthly - you can get play cards which give you two months at a time and don't do any harm if you miss a few days or weeks (or even months it is rumoured, though somehow I doubt you will need to find out).
Next you'll be trying to get her on EverCrackNope, been there, done that, couldn't afford the expansions, and it's way too complicated these days to get into from scratch so I wouldn't encourage it - but World of WarCrack is a much more beautiful game anyway.

I don't know that particular game but I used to be in a serious relationship with somebody who started playing that sort of games on the internet...
He became very quickly addicted, prefering spending his student money on internet connections (there wasn't broadband in his city at the time) rather than food  . (not to mention other stuffs he could have done with me  ).
He had 2 'players' in the game, one was 'him' this other was his 'sister' (he didn't have a sister in real life) with both different behaviours and different friends. To the point where the game became more important to him than his real life.... I realised he started to become completely schizophrenic ...
That's when I ended the 5 years relationship, and this played a big part in it (I did try to help him first, but you can't help somebody quitting something if they don't want to).
Anyway that game cost him a lot in his real life (not talking just money here: friends and job opportunities).

I guess I just want to point out that people with a tendency to become 'addicts' at something should may be think twice before getting enrolled in such games.... of course they never do but whatever  .

Those games have certain consequences on people with a 'weaker' or more influencable mind...

of course dancing can be an addiction (ain't I and my craving symptoms a good example  ), but last time I checked it was still real life...
I guess it could become dangerous too if that started to hinder your work (oops) and the rest of your life like family and friends etc ; but that's just like everything else.
What really concerns and I guess scares me is when a your irreal life in a game takes over you real life in this world...

(ok I heard the 'but the game is in real life'   )

PS: It's my second post in the geek corner, if I don't get out of here very soon I'll become another 'geek in the making'

I was thinking about this last night and while some of us may spend a fair amount of time on here, I don't think anyone's got to the point where they'd stay at home on the Forum and give up dancing. I have however seen people give up real-world roleplaying so they could stay home playing EverQuest and watched as gradually the rest of their life vanished. It's quite scary, hence EverQuest's nickname of EverCrack.

OK. Quandry.

Item: On Thursday I have this long-awaited operation I've been moaning about for ages.
Item: I'm off work for two weeks, and off dancing for at least two months.
Item: I have a shedload of domestic stuff to catch up on.
Item: They are selling WoW for £14.99 in the local Game.
Item: Just about everyone who's tried it seems to love WoW.
Item: This lunchtime might be my last chance to buy it before Thursday.

Hmmm. Should I risk getting it? If I get it, will my subsequent addiction destroy my life? Would getting it be a really good way of passing the time, or a really really stupid idea? Help! :what:

Ya, I'd go with that.

I was thinking about it, though, and I reckon that WoW isn't addictive per se. Rather, it is the Sunk Cost Fallacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunk_costs) hooked up on steroids and turned into a game.
Of course, if you are a scientific and rational thinker, then you'll be completely immune.

You think you're clever being logical and correct, but you're not :)

Tessalicious, ESG and myself are currently on Lightbringer. Seems to work fine. Could do it there. Or somewhere else if anyone has a different preference...

Am i going to have to buy this game then....i think someones needs to start a poll on will you play WoW with other forumites yes/no type thingy....

Out of curiosity, is Lightbringer PvE? If so, I might very well transfer my main character across - I also fancy starting an Alliance Shaman, cos they rock.

Tessalicious

Lightbringer is indeed PvE - question is, Horde or Alliance? I've got both but am enjoying my Horde more at the moment (probably because ESG only plays Horde) but Trampy is already there on Alliance.

Lol!

It being a PvE server, it doesn't matter too much if we go Horde or Alliance. Unless we want to get a twink and go on the Battlegrounds, in which case Horde is better as the queues are a lot smaller.

I don't really mind which that much (although I already have an Alliance guild and I'd prefer to continue with my Horde uber-rogue).

Ooops. Showing my geek credentials there....

Battlegrounds (the PvP arena you can go on if you fancy a wee scuffle) is tiered by level so you don't have Lvl 5's being ganked by Lvl 55's. I think it goes something like Lvl 10-19, 20-29, 30-39 etc. A twink is a character 'sponsored' by your main character - basically, you level your twink to 19, 29, 39 etc and then tool them out with the best kit going by using your main to trawl the lower levels for the correct gear. This kit is usually better than your average player can get as it doesn't go out-of-date due to the levelling process. The upshot is that the twinks own anyone in Battlegrounds due to high stats and are very, very annoying.

What do others think? I'm not fussed (although I'd leave my Alliance main on Terenas if we went Horde). Would anyone like to try PvP? I find it's more fun on those servers as the world can seem a lot more dangerous!

I'd rather not do pvp. It gets to be a pain when you're trying to quest and some bored kid is running around ganking you.

Horde or alliance - i don't mind. I've done a lot of alliance stuff, so maybe a change to horde would be good. But either way. I'm easy.

And it doesn't really matter about the expansion until you get to 60, unless you want to play one of the new races blood elves or draeni. But we can live without it i'm sure. there's plenty to do in the original game

I'll join a ceroc guild. that'll be cool. though i'm not sure if i could do all those quests again. what server are you thinking about?

Nooooooooo...

I play too many computer games as it is. I've always avoided MMOs as I worry that I can't just "put it aside" because I'll always know that other people are probably going on quests etc. Having a Ceroc guild maybe is that temptation I don't need.

I did play World of Warcrack briefly on my brother's account and it was alright. Maybe if I knew some of the people on the server it would have been better (or worse for me depending on how you look at it). I still play some multiplayer games online: Civ IV and Enemy Territory mostly at the moment.

Actually, I could open a 2nd account, have 2 computers, and join you in the hunt! :na:

Yeah. I tend to agree. If it wasn't for the idiots you get on PvP, it'd probably be fun. But I'm sure that you get plenty of small people there, who would do that, just to be annoying....

Horde or alliance - i don't mind. I've done a lot of alliance stuff, so maybe a change to horde would be good. But either way. I'm easy.

Ummm. I don't mind. I guess Tess wants to use her new rogue, so I'm happy to go horde on Lightbringer as well. Is everyone else cool with that??

I quite like "The Licious" as it sounds like a band

or the Clerks 2 stylee and indicative of messing up the game for ESG name of "Donky ****ers"

"The Tramps" is ok , multiple meanings are good :). I did once ask the Tramp years ago if he was named after the Sinatra number "The Lady is a tramp"(or whatever its called) but he replied, perhaps thinking i was serious,"no from Lady and the Tramp the Disney Film" ;)

Cool - horde on Lightbringer works for me. Will go have a look myself.

Now what race. Are we all aiming to start in the same area? or doesn't it matter to much for the first few levels - they happen very quickly. If we start making blood elves, we will all need TBC to be able to play together.

The only possible reason i could see for not using Ceroc is that it's a trademarked name. Big Mike might not like it and as you said, Blizz might complain about the use of commercial names. OK - the two possible reasons....

And of course we need 10 people to sign the charter and get the guild up and running, but that'll be easy enough to do.

So are we going to do it?

I bought a trial copy from a shop at Christmas time for 2 euros which gives 14 days but have not seen that in the UK. To be honest though, its better you just buy the full version as its only 9.99 with free postage from gameplay (http://www.gameplay.com) and you get the first full month of play free. The alternative is of course someone sends you their "introduce a friend" trial and you download it - that gives you 10 days play and its completely free - if you wait until im back in the country (this Thursday) ..Ill send you all the info ;)

*edit: auto URL build with adverts from the site in question , is rather disturbing - but an interesting feature :)

trial accounts are fine - as I said (pay attention Tessa ;)) I had one. I managed to get to lvl 13 with my rogue in 14 days of occasional play and i doubt beo will manage much more (i.e. if theres a level limit - he wont see it) - you can do everything bar trading and joining guilds but that doesnt stop Beo joining a party. Once the trial is over you simply buy the full version and type the new key from the box into your account page on the web and continue where you left off. So if Beo creates a character on Lightbringer it will still be there when he upgrades.

The download is BIG though - if he is going to create a trial account and download it.

Beo, all things considered - £9.99 for full version ? :)

I'm currently saving up to have 1 gold - so i wont be a lot of help yet.

Anyone got any advice about methods of travel between continents ? portals, airships, flying beasties...whatever ?

So is there a name for the guild yet ?

Tessalicious
15th-March-2007, 12:46 PM
The guild is 'The Licious' and you will get an invite when I'm on next, which might be about midnight tonight or might be tomorrow or even Saturday.

As Horde, you get between continents by zeppelin. You won't need it yet but the boat goes between Ratchet and Booty Bay, otherwise use the zeppelin to get between Undercity, Orgrimmar and Grom'Gol (also somewhere you won't need to go for a while). Unlike flight masters, the zeppelin towers are outside the cities - out of Orgrimmar and turn left, or out of Undercity and straight ahead.

There's also a flight master (wind rider or bat) in pretty much every town big enough to have an inn, and some that aren't too. Sometimes they're quite hard to find, so just ask if you get lost. They go more places than the zeps, and stop you having to run places (after you've run there the first time of course), but cost money, so you have to decide what's important to you.

Sorry, yes Ventrilo is the same as Roger Wilco (I used that as well before they made you pay for it).

Ventrilo isn't a broadband thing really, I just said that as I wouldn't want to use any chat software over a Dial-up. But yeah, as you say same as Skype, Roger Wilco etc etc. Just made by a different company.

Well some codecs can be bandwidth hogs. Often because they go for the best voice quality they can. I use TeamSpeak for my gaming comms which is free but you'll need to find a TeamSpeak server. I'll often host when it is just a few of my friends but for larger groups you'll need a fatter pipe on the server.

So Skype does n-way calls? Cool.

You can see that my unarmed skill is 0/50 ... how do I fight without a weapon (if I don't select anything and something comes attacking me it seems I just stand there and get killed rather than fighting unarmed :what: )? Also what is the best way to build up unarmed skill without just getting beaten to a pulp?

Lots of my quests seem to need me to go find someone or something in Eversong woods. these are EMENSE and I have spent ages just running around trying to work out where I need to be! I know that a little gold dot will show up when I am close, but it would appear I haven't even been close . How do I know where to go? The main map is pretty useless for finding specific things unless you're in the city.

I'm learning tailoring, so if anyone needs anything made from cloth (at the moment I can only make things from linen) please let me know. Also, if anyone has spare linen or wool that they don't need please can you post it to me (and I will, of course return the favour if I get things you might need :flower: )?

Some of my armour needs to be repaired. I thought that I could repair it at any goods seller, but it seems this is not the case. Are there only specific places/people I can see to repair armour?

Thanks in advance for help with these questions, sorry if some of the questions are silly, but I'm new to all this!

IIRC my unarmed skill increased when my opponent disarmed me and I was forced to fight bare-handed, just during the normal course of an attack - your character's hands will glow red when this happens.

Also what is the best way to build up unarmed skill without just getting beaten to a pulp?If you open your character window and your backpack and drag-and-drop your weapon from your hand to your backpack, you will put it away. Until you equip it again, you will be unarmed. Don't fight anything that's higher level than you - stick with several levels lower and don't use offensive spells unless you have to (healing ones are fine), then you'll skill up as you do damage.

Aleks is also right that some mobs disarm you - this is why having some skill in unarmed combat can be useful, but it shouldn't really be the only time you practise it.
Lots of my quests seem to need me to go find someone or something in Eversong woods. these are EMENSE and I have spent ages just running around trying to work out where I need to be! I know that a little gold dot will show up when I am close, but it would appear I haven't even been close . How do I know where to go? The main map is pretty useless for finding specific things unless you're in the city.To be honest, I use Allakhazam, as do most people (or Thottbot). You might find add-ons with map coordinates make things easier too - I'll send you one when I get home. Otherwise, if you don't want to use these "cheats" then you can always ask another player. Sometimes the quest log is helpful enough to give you enough direction to find the place if you wander far enough.

I'm learning tailoring, so if anyone needs anything made from cloth (at the moment I can only make things from linen) please let me know. Also, if anyone has spare linen or wool that they don't need please can you post it to me (and I will, of course return the favour if I get things you might need :flower: )?Of course! Part of having a guild is about sharing stuff between members if it's more useful to someone else.
Some of my armour needs to be repaired. I thought that I could repair it at any goods seller, but it seems this is not the case. Are there only specific places/people I can see to repair armour?Only armor merchants, bowyers, and blacksmithing suppliers can repair armor. For example, in the town you're about to visit (Tranquillien) the only repairer is the blacksmith supplier behind the inn.
Also, why doesn't the picture on my profile look like my character? Tessalicious' looks like her's... :what:Mine doesn't either - on the profile, the picture is the generic blood-elf female, unfortunately.

No need to worry about money donations - it's all paid for. You'll need to buy your own tabards anyway, but we have a guild and a design!

Trampy is an officer (as is Alec), so even if I'm not online he can invite any forumites that happen to log on at any abnormal time of day or night . That goes for alts too.

I'll also set up one of my other characters as a guild bank, so if anyone has drops they think will be useful for someone else (ie for a lower level guildy) they can post it to Haeli. Anything you need, ingredients for tradeskills or equipment, just post it in here or add a note to your character in the guild book online.

And yes, we do have a few non-forumites in the guild at the moment (mostly Alec's relatives!) but they'll either be completely inactive, or they'll be really useful to have around, so we'll see.

After my machine spent the last couple of days downloading the trial version, i installed it. In fact, there are another 3 members who aren't visible on here because they're only lvl 1 - and they're all Tauren. So we're quite multi-cultural really.

Oh, and ESG has Alchemy and Herbalism (so unlike him, but never mind!) as his tradeskills. We could do with an enchanter, but maybe it's best we don't have one since they eat money like cows eat grass.

i left it up to ESG to add any character details to the list, he can be secret if he wants :)

why do enchanters eat money ? and what comes out the other end ?They eat money because they get their reagents (ingredients) from disenchanting enchanted items - these are the green, blue and purple drops that everyone else makes lots of money from selling. So, in order to fund an enchanter, you either have to have big raids on dungeons and give them all the nice loot (which is really depressing) or buy them stuff from the AH (which is very expensive). The other alternative, of course, is to have them disenchant everything that the other crafters in the guild make, but then the other crafters don't make any money either.

I know I know.. but I look at WoW and then I look at EvE and I think to myself "But I've got a lovely Level II Mining barge and a fully augmented Battleship for low sector work, and I make and sell my own ships and.. ..." but then I look at WoW and think.. "Cool I get to gut people.."

I WILL get the software and I WILL install it (HMV had the 15 day trial for £1.50 but it said you needed to buy the full version afterwards and your character would be deleted at the end of the 15 day trial)

And do I need the other disk as well? the one that gives you the other characters to play? I will be online soon.. but perhaps not JUST yet

ok ok keep your fur on.. scales.. whatever it is that blood elves have ;)

I've just installed the game (5 disks?!!! and had a look at the manual (HOW BIG?!!) and I'll play the game later and roll up a character.

I'm entertaining friends at the moment, and just finished a 3 course meal but if I have time tonight after they've gone I'll go through the character creation process.

now to think of a suitably Orcish Name ;)

(I was thinking of Fingal... as in.. "oi watchit or dat Fingal get ya !" ..(he'd need to live in a cave.. obviously ;) ) but probably a name like Náshnak or Brack or Nýrag or (am using the orcish name generator program here (http://wow.stratics.com/content/features/name/) btw ;) ) would be more fitting for a Orc :)

ok ok keep your fur on.. scales.. whatever it is that blood elves have ;)

I dont know either, Ive yet to see one. I did try and head up to the NE where Sparkles was, thinking if i kept to the paths I'd be fine. After entering the Western Plaguelands I met a large diseased bear who took one swipe at me and, luckily for me, then ran off. I lost 3 quarters of my health to that one swipe. Just as I wavered in my decision to carry on, a vicious spider spotted me; like the bear this too had a skull symbol for its level. I ran. I'm not going back to the Western Plaguelands for a while :)

I've just installed the game (5 disks?!!! and had a look at the manual (HOW BIG?!!) and I'll play the game later and roll up a character.

Don't even bother reading the manual. It really is intuitive and little boxes pop-up anytime you do anything new. Ask people on here for any help you need.

now to think of a suitably Orcish Name ;).

You can't beat "Shirley" for an appropriate name. I'd suggest "Lick Lick" as something that goes well with "The Licious" :) Although why you don't just use the excellent "Beowulf" i don't know ;)

Windows® System 2000/XP OS:

* Intel Pentium® III 800 MHz or AMD Athlon 800 MHz
* 512 MB or more of RAM
* 32 MB 3D graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting, such as NVIDIA® GeForce™ 2 class card or above

Mac® OS X 10.3.9:

* 512 MB RAM or higher; DDR RAM recommended
* ATI or NVIDIA® video hardware with 32 MB VRAM or more
* 6.0 GB available HD space
* 4x CD-Rom drive

What are the rest of you running? how is your game play? I seemed to get good latency last night but is there a significant lag on the server? or is that one usually lag free?

What sort of plug-ins are available for this software package? I've looked at the plugin writers API and can't really make much head nor tail out of it yet but then I don't know the ins and outs of the package yet. And of course, there's no point in programming a plug in if one already exists.. reinventing the wheel etc.

I did get a message when downloading the patch that I was behind a firewall but it didn't seem to worry the installation too much. are there any particular ports I need to open up to allow the package to run ok? As I said I managed to run it last night, so obviously no problems as such yet.

Also I was looking at my old teamspeak account (used for Eve) for live voice chat over TCP while playing. Would this be easy to use while in WoW? or are their better/easier/more integrated systems available?

oh yeah, one last question

I created my account last night, played and everything then exited. However, when I go to the WOW site and look at account management it says

now I KNOW the username and password. is there some delay in replicating the user details from the server to the website?

Lag isn't usually too bad, but sometimes it can be dreadful. Warriors can usually cope with that, as can hunters, but most other classes who actually have to do things to be able to fight ( :na: ) don't deal so well with it. I make it a general rule that once I've died once because of lag, I give up.
What sort of plug-ins are available for this software package? And of course, there's no point in programming a plug in if one already exists.. reinventing the wheel etc. There are some really nice, useful Add-ons - I'll look them up and post links to them tonight. For example, there are add-ons that give map coordinates, allow you to tailor your bar interface more, store info on the maps about where you gather herbs/ore, and tell you how much an item last sold for at the AH and sells for to vendors.

The spec needed is very low, any delay you get is generally down to the server. That server was very laggy for about an hour one time i connected but its been very fast otherwise.

Well - you're doing better than me. I still can't get past the 'Handshaking' stage when trying to fire up WoW. It's clearly talking to the server, as it manages to get past the authentication stage. Port forwarding is correctly set up on my router, so I know that's not the issue. After a quick e-mail to the guy who upgraded my puter for me I found out the spec is as follows:
Power supply unit: Akasa PaxPower 400 watt
Processor: Socket AM2 AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (2.4 GHz)
Memory: 1 GB of reasonably cheap PC6400 DDR2 SDRAM
Motherboard chipset: Nvidia nForce 4 Ultra

Hi..my name's Beo and I do WoW.. not a lot, just recreationally y'know. *sniffs* when I first started it was just an occasional boar.. but now I'm needing 20 or 30 raptors at night.

.. I can quit any time I want to.. .. I just have to find the right spell components for the "rune of quitting" :na:

You're a better man than I. I realised that I had but the one chance to quit, and one only... so I had one of my rare moments of common sense and took it. And now I'm free!!!!!

Seriously though - if I had more leisure time, I'd almost certainly have kept going - I can see how much fun it is. Realistically though, I haven't enough time to do half the things I want to do, without throwing this into the mix.

This is why I didn't start in the first place. In case I don't get a rare moment of common sense. I love computer games and I'd love to play more of them for longer but I don't really have the time and MMOs are, IMHO, the most addictive of them all.

I don't really see what benefits this dungeon hack game gets from being a MMO, sure you get to giggle at some bull headed guy break-dancing in the street but the gameplay is so "hack 'n' slash" it's really no different from a stand alone game.

Ah. It's more fun when you start to team. Not to mention, being able to tell other people on the game how many boars you've killed.

But, if you play mostly on your own, then yes, it's not really any different from a stand alone game. But how is that different to any MMORPG?

I think there is that. Eve certainly appeals to me more than WoW but I posted on my blog why I'd be tempted to join that (http://gary-stewart.blogspot.com/2007/03/wittering-about-games.html) (my blog isn't humorous at all, not unless you are on some mind altering substance that makes everything seem funny). I've played hack 'n' slash online with things like Dungeon Siege which is equally soulless but worked alright for me a few friends.

Homeworld was ok , i was really pointing out how good Eve/Elite are in comparison - total freedom in space. Homeworld is an RTS, and one that uses 2D thinking in a 3D environment (i always seemed to get attacked from the same direction). All the projectile things I saw were red as I couldn't use them.

where'd you get your axe though ? :)

Ah .. My Axe of bloody rampage.. Ah that would be telling (psst the Auction House!) it's claimed a few lives in the Battleground.. Cast blood rage (I think that's the one that gives you damage points but limits your healing) , charge, and then while they're stunned Rend (level 2 now I think) them and then hamstring them, and if you're still alive (and while clobbering them with the axe) cast that stomp thing that cuts their attacks by 10% ... then I leg it and let my team mates finish them off.

not a great tactic I know.. and combined with the rubbish armour explains my average 15 second life expectancy in Warsong Gulch :)

Yes, you start with some racial skills, Orcs get axes :) but if you go to the weapons masters in Ogrimmar (ask any wandering guard where they are) they can train you in several things. One thing that puzzles me.. I have cooking as a skill.. I hunt , boar say  , if I start a fire i can cook aforementioned boar into Boar burgers or something like that.

But I need "simple wood" as a reagant. (I have flint and tinder already) now as far as I can see I can't see any skill that allows you to get wood from the trees etc.. and the only mobile I see that drops wood is "Terry Palin" the Lumberjack ( again) who's in Alliance-ville-land!

wait.. you're telling me there's nowhere in the horde continent that supplies wood? simple plain garden variety fit for burning/cooking on wood?

so when I have the components for my recipes etc Ihave to travel to Ogrimmar , buy some wood, nip outside for a quick BBQ and cook all my steaks etc! how very odd.

I mean, woods not expensive, only 30 coppers or so.. but you would think it would be easy to find out there. if all the wood in the game is coming from one Lumberjack.. then he's a wealthy mobile :) Mind you I suppose the song does go "I'm a lumberjack and I'm ok... ... "

Re. weapons: Absolutely - ask a guard in any city to point you to the weapon master and you'll find out what you can learn. Casting classes are more restricted with weapons than warriors though, so I'm not sure what you can learn.

It's also never a good idea to try to keep up with too many weapon skills - you end up having to devote a whole bag just to different weapons, and never being able to keep the weapon skills high enough to be doing a lot of damage (since your weapon skill depends on the amount of damage you have done with it, and vice versa).

And if anyone needs nice weapons or armor, let me know what types and level and I will keep an eye out.

Beo - rather than wasting your money buying wood and tinder, you should use existing campfires, stoves, and warm fires. These are in most inns (except some undead ones), many humanoid mob camps, and all cities somewhere. You just have to stand next to it, you don't have to have made it.

Ummm. Not quite sure what you mean. You can't hit things with your mace while casting spells or vice versa either. If you want to stop using your wand, and cast a spell mid-fight, just click on the shoot button again - or move slightly - and you'll stop using the wand, and can cast a spell.

OK so my first dungeon last night and what a lot to take in!

I have to confess I was struggling and getting rather fustrated at some points. I wish I had known before hand that we were starting at 10pm, I thought we were starting at 8:30pm and would have had a nap earlier in the evening if I knew we would be up so late!

Trying to do everything at once was definitely a challenge, getting the pecking order right and knowing what to do and when is something that I guess comes with practice.
It was no-one's fault, but there was a lot of waiting around for everyone to be in the same place at the same time, but then I felt like when I needed some time to sort out my bags or re-charge my mana I was holding everyone up . I guess it's just difficult to get the balance right.

I really appreciated the help from the more experienced players :flower: and all the advice. There were a few other things I wish I had known before hand though so at least I have learnt some lessons for the future:

- go to the bank before starting a dungeon and drop off all your quest items and things you don't need (I nearly did this but wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do or not, and no-one had mentioned it so I didn't and suffered for it)
- don't bother to carry more food and drink than you personally need, it takes up too much room
- discard grey items so you have space for valuable things
- look after your own health and mana before you sort out other people's (having both healers die was a pain - though maybe it would be better next time if we both ressurected and then travelled back together, poor Trampy died again trying to get back to us  )
- install skype (or similar) because when you're being attacked it's hard to concentrate on everything and type 'Help' at the same time!
- check exact details of where and when we're doing a dungeon so that I'm better prepared

Thank you to people who are posting my things back to me, and to everyone that helped out. It was fun, but I think will be more fun next time now I know more of what to expect.

If you know what you are doing with network set up (or you have a network setup that doesn't care) setting up a Teamspeak server is pretty easy and since other people are going off your download (and your upload is multiplex; I think) then a 22kb/s per user on a channel for a 176kb/s download for you (and only if everyone is talking at the same time) so shouldn't mess up your game. We've done it with Civ IV but then it is a reflex game.

I think voice com is the only way to play games but then that's also because I find it increases the social aspect.

Why am I still subscribed to this thread. Am I just leading myself into temptation?

killingtime

(and your upload is multiplex; I think)

Multicast even but it doesn't. The server doesn't combine signals and sends to all on the server. So the calculation is (from their website)
DOWN: people_speaking_atm * selected_codec
UP: people_speaking_atm * (people_in_channel - 1) * selected_codec

Ouch! At 22kb/s then on an 8 person channel with 3 people talking at the same time we've got 3 * 7 * 22 = 462kb/s; given my upload (like most broadband) is at 384kb/s then I max out quickly. Of course you get the option of using smaller codecs and having multiple channels. Also three people talking at the same time is confusing as it is but during the heat of battle it's quite common.

The client obviously requires less. With most of it being download and, in this example, the max upload being 22kb/s.

beo: how come your weapons and armour are so much better than mine now :(

Easy..

1. Skin.

2. Install Auctioneer

3. Go to AH

4. Sell skin

5. Skin more..

6. sell more..

7. sell any green items that are not usable (and grey items like Linen)

Repeat steps 5 to 7. (remembering to train skinning / leather working skills as you progress)

8. Get lots of Money ( I get about 50 silver per 20 light leather, am now selling medium leathers, and light hides/ cured hides) and I skin anything that moves in the badlands.

9. Use gold to buy nice armour and weapons from AH.

The thing that annoys me is once an item is soul bound it can't be Auctioned later.. It hurts, but you can get a pittance from a trader for old gear.

of course, dungeoning helps as well.. if you ever want to dungeon.. give me a shout, I'm very good at dying.. hoping that my blood rusts their swords etc ;)

oh .. and quest , quest , quest like there's no tomorrow

And this is why MMORPG don't appeal to me (along with worrying that they will appeal and become terribly addictive). It sounds tedious; tedious I tell you. But then again I played some Gears of War recently which boiled down to:

1, Shoot People Who Are On The Other Team Until All Are Dead Or You Die
2, Restart Level

OK so my first dungeon last night and what a lot to take in!

I have to confess I was struggling and getting rather fustrated at some points. I wish I had known before hand that we were starting at 10pm, I thought we were starting at 8:30pm and would have had a nap earlier in the evening if I knew we would be up so late! You'd gone offline the night before, before I had a chance to let you know that we wouldn't be back for it til 10. I was going to text you but forgot - my bad

I guess it's just difficult to get the balance right.Dungeons aren't easy, especially the first time, but the best thing is having a group who dungeon together regularly and get to know each others' styles, and how to keep each other alive. We'll get uber at this, I have no doubts

- check exact details of where and when we're doing a dungeon so that I'm better preparedAll good plans - I'm sorry I didn't send round something to help you all be more prepared.

In a few levels I'll take you all to Blackfathom Deeps, but that would have to be at a weekend or starting early, cos it's massive. I'll also do all the checking up in advance to make sure that everyone knows where to go for quests etc. If I get really organised I can even circulate maps and stuff, if it would help anyone.
Thank you to people who are posting my things back to me, and to everyone that helped out. It was fun, but I think will be more fun next time now I know more of what to expect.

:cheers:It was fun having you along - grouping with friends is the whole point of WoW. Sorry if I got bossy  but I wanted to minimise dying!
Does everyone have skype? we could use it next time - however, i dont know if you can have a MIC ON button with Skype? (meaning it would always be on even when you're not talking)Skype would be good - it makes it a lot easier. I'd get a Vent server if I thought it was worth it, but I can't really afford it. I think a few people still need mics and stuff - anyone who needs advice on setting this up is welcome to ask.
My Undercity is a maze!! I actually died on the way in!! the lifts killed me.. roflHehe - to be honest I've died in the lifts in Undercity, as has Alec - so it's not that much to be ashamed of.
And this is why MMORPG don't appeal to me (along with worrying that they will appeal and become terribly addictive). It sounds tedious; tedious I tell you. The point of an MMORPG is that you don't have to do that stuff - because someone will, and you can always earn money doing other stuff and then buy things you want a different way. It's so different from the FPS games because there are so many different paths to take, and so many ways to interact with people. It's almost like real-life, but with magic and full leather armor :waycool:

Skype would be good - it makes it a lot easier. I'd get a Vent server if I thought it was worth it, but I can't really afford it.

Well you can just host one yourself for private VoIP solutions (I use Teamspeak because it is what I'm use to but they are both free, well for the use you are proposing anyway... the only problem is bandwidth). Then again Skype is heavier with 3-16KB/s (or 24 - 128kbp/s) though I couldn't find details on how a multi-user chat works and it if sends packets to each user or sends it to a central service for distribution. Given the claim of 100 user conferences you'd expect the latter (so it might be better after all).

I think a few people still need mics and stuff - anyone who needs advice on setting this up is welcome to ask.

I've played a couple of games where one person has just listened to the banter due to not having a working mic. It's not ideal for tactics or anything (as they can't really acknowledge a request, other than by typing or doing it) but it can be alright.

I know, but there is always an element of level grind and if you are level 6 and your friends are level 45 it's unlikely you can join them in the same dungeon etc. I mean the only reason I'm tempted to join is the social during gaming aspect and that's the bit that is hard to resist :really:.

The left mouse button controls your camera, so if you click and drag it, it will change your camera angle so you can see your char in profile or from the front - as soon as you let go it defaults back to behind you though, so you need to take the screen shot while holding the camera in place.

I haven't put one of me up, cos everytime I try to make Toireasa stand still for a picture, she poses for a second and then starts yawning just as I get to being ready to press the right button

I was doing a little programming last night and am making a "little" progress.

I've been fiddling around with an add-on that will allow me to export the Recipes/patterns etc my characters can produce and export that to a MySQL database for browsing over the web. The idea being that other members of the guild and/or other non-guild players can see what I produce, what materials they require and can contact me in game to either supply me with the materials to make them or send me the G.S & C to buy the materials and make the items.

I'm currently using an Add on called trade Export. but I'm not 100% satisfied with the output so am looking at the add on development kit with a view to writing one of my own.

And I'm now an Artisan Skinner, and have maxed out my current level of Leatherworking (150) and need to find someone to teach me Expert leatherworking.

You need to go to Thunder Bluff to learn Expert Leatherworking. As I said to Trampy the other day - turn west at Camp Taurajo and follow the signs to the big city. For the trainer, ask a guard when you get there.

If you're planning on keeping the LW going til the top, I might not bother (I'm not patient enough for all the farming). In which case I'll be auctioning all my leather, but guildies get first dibbs obviously.

PS. can someone explain the whole 'Twink' thing to me again, please Thanks :)

A twink is a player character that is disproportionately powerful for its level, possessing potent items and high-end enchants that are generally way beyond the means of other players at that level. Twink items are acquired through rare drops, drops off of bosses in instances, as rewards from very difficult to complete quests, as gifts, or from the Auction House. Twink items on the Auction House are usually very expensive. The enchantments twinks typically have on their equipment can be performed only by higher level characters at the top of the enchanting profession and are usually very expensive. Therefore, twinking usually requires significant assistance from high-level alts, friends, and / or guild members. However, there are examples of self-made twinks that generate the necessary gold from Auction House trading or other legitimate in-game methods. Twinks are mainly used in PVP fighting or in Battlegrounds.

Copied verbatim from the WoWWiki site :)

Tessalicious

I like WoW much better, for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, the PvE world in Guild Wars felt really limited (probably just my preception at my level, but I found it hard to navigate the game beyond the main starting area and the first PvP areas). I'm not particularly into PvP - I like it as a diversion, as something different to do, not as my main game play - so this wasn't ideal for me.

Secondly, in that area, GW was much less pretty after the first 5 levels (the storyline event called 'the Searing' makes the landscape grey and ugly at a certain point. Call me superficial, but I like something nice to look at.

Thirdly, I found GW quite lonely, because you could only 'meet' other players in towns - outside of the towns, the world had no-one in it but you and your team. On the other hand, WoW has classic social gameplay in most parts of the world but group-only instances in the dungeons, which IMHO is the best of both worlds. But then, I like to be able to just decide to group up with someone who happens to be fighting the same mobs as me if it looks like it will make it easier for both of us, rather than having to make that decision 10 minutes in advance.

But, I'll agree, the character movement graphics are nicer in GW. Especially the dancing (although you still can't beat a naked gnome, even if you wanted to  ).

No No No.. must ... resist..

Anyway, isn't that only really needed if you want to progress up to level 70? I'm only 20 something so a LOOOOONG time before I need that one yet.

I'll have some catching up to do when i get back to Aberdeen, Lots of questing and grinding to get back up to the rest of the guilds level :)

Already defeated you twice, so :na: (four times if you count replays)
Ta for the autograph tho.
I've also defeated myself more times than that as well (fab games).

No worries on the autograph, any true geek should have the fear of being chased by my SEC-1 and SEC-2.

aargh!

Am having headaches trying to code a LUA Addon to WoW that allows me to export the list of my available leatherworking patterns to my out-of-game website :(

I have the PHP code written to load info from a MySQL db and link in pages from thottbot etc but it's looking like the interface to the trade skills dialogs has changed so I'll have to manually (ie. pen and paper) export them.

on a side note.. any leatherworker want a pattern for a [Heavy Leather Ball] (http://www.thottbot.com/i18662) ? I have one going spare

I made a batch , gave some to guild members and threw the rest to noobs in/around "the den" south of Oggrimmar :)

do with them as you wish

Could you use it as a way to stop people looting? 20 of you having one each and all throwing them at the same player at the same time so their inventory is just full of balls?

D'oh !!

hehe.. I'll easily make you another one.. heck I'll easily make you 10 if you're needing !!

I "wasted" about 30 heavy leather making these and thowing them to noobs down by the Orc starting area. Hehe.. the air was flying with balls at one point, must have been about 7 balls in the air at once.. It was like watching Shaolin Soccer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286112/) all over again :)

Apparently (according to thottbot and my Auctioneer plugin) they sell for about 1g each!! I was feeling benevolent and bought some leather to add to what I already had (wasn't until i looked at the auction goods in my mailbox I realised I'd bought it from ESG's char hehe) made a batch.

Some of the YELLS and SAYS well quite funny..

"Hey! I've found a ball in my rucksack!" , "Argh! someone's attacking me something big just hit me" etc hehehe

me and 2 other guys played ball for a bit... very clever that ball, it flies round corners too..

I bought some mageweave cloth from him last night at the AH - he and Tess and Trampy are very kind to us noobs, giving materials when we need them - there's even a shopping list on guild message of the day (so if you need something Beo let Tess know and she'll stick it on there for you) but sometimes it's nice to pay your way and not feel like such a burden :flower:

It was funny.. poor n00bs running for cover while the big nasty orc threw leather balls at them hehe

What I wish though that it was possible to occasionally PvP my own side!

I was in the barrens skinning stormsnouts and this $%£%! of a troll kept spamming me with the "$%£%! has requested a group, Accept Decline" message not only that every time I killed something he'd start skinning it (or at least he'd try to)

a few /No and /Rude emotes were used but he took no heed.

I moved to the stonetalon mountains after that !!

think I might set one of these up for my tailoring :nice:

Can someone who is "in the know" post up details of Dungeons - eg what level(ish) the mobs are in them, where they are and so on?

I keep getting quests for dungeons at the moment but don't know when I should be attempting to complete them... I dumped my other Wailing Caverns quest on Sparklette last night because it was grey and just taking up quest log space .

I have those maps on my IPAQ, and consult them in game when I'm flying around. Nash became a tourist for a bit and tried to see how many flight paths he could collect.

Got a fair few, but some areas you can't run through as lvl 25.. even if you stick to the roads.

really useful mapsThose maps are really useful - I use them to figure out where I could be playing that I haven't specifically been sent when I'm bored of the area I've been questing in, and to work out how to get places, among other things. Print them, if you can (on someone else's colour printer preferably  ).

The book you've got, Sarah, has loads of useful info in it, but it may be a bit difficult to navigate unless you know what you're looking for, so I'd suggest using it in conjunction with those maps and Allazhazam (http://wow.allakhazam.com/)/Thottbot (http://www.thottbot.com/) for the odd specific question.

On the other hand, I like being asked questions, it makes me feel needed and intelligent (god knows, very little can make me feel intelligent these days).

I like being asked questions,

ok then. How do you fight ?

tips n stuff I mean. I've found the biggest issue when theres lots of mobs is tragetting and hitting - I always use the keyboard now. I use F after targeting a friend to fight what theyre fighting and TAB to pick next target. I think thats about it though.

hey - whats Trampy talking about ...real life...in a WoW thread ? for shame :)

Beowulf

ok then. How do you fight ?

:yeah:

I have this ongoing problem.. I select the target and rush in to battle.. then hit my attack icon again.. which of course, puts my weapon away! Usually my totems keep me covered until I get my weapons out again.

Of course, I was killed by lag last night. we were fighting some Searing Blade cultists and I was getting low on heath. So I clicked on my healing icon.. only I was so laggy I didn't know if it had fired or not.. answer was "Not" Screen froze with me at about 1/5 health, screen unfroze with it asking me if I wanted to release my spirit now?

I'm getting better in PvP but not much.. I now last 6 seconds and not just 5 !! (Tassi doesn't do PvP just yet)

I've never had that problem. Being an FPS player, I'm used to attacking with the mouse - so whilst I press a button to charge, I attack targets by right clicking. (in the beginning I right clicked for every hit :) ).....Or at least I did, I'm getting out of that habit now and using the keyboard, as its far better to TAB and attack rather than vainly try and click on a monster next to another monster you don't want to attack (as its got full health) next to 3 party members you cannot attack. e.g. CLICK BY ACCIDENT OF TEAM MATE. HEROIC STRIKE. "You cant attack that". "D'oh"

Sparkles
2nd-May-2007, 02:14 PM
My chars are spell casters so I don't have that problem, for me it's all about getting my spells in the right order:
Protection spell (for me, as cloth armour affords little protection) first
Biggest damage spell swiftly followed by
Curses and DOT spells as enemy rushes towards you
Then any other damage spells I have enough mana for and weapon attacks until the mob/mobs is/are dead.
It usually works well enough :).

Of course priorities change in a group scenario, then it's mostly about trying to keep everyone alive, and only using spells to pull if no-one else has pulling tactics (sorry about last night Tess and Beo, I got a bit confused at one point).

I haven't done any PvP yet, I'm too much of a whimp .

Ooh, just thought, I also have two lines of spells open bottom left of the screen, so I don't have to keep swapping lines - go to interface options and click one of the boxes in there. Makes life a bit easier :).

Don't get low on health  Do the risk assessment thing - what's the worst lag, how fast does your healing work, how much damage are you likely to take in that time, how much does it heal of your total, etc. I'd probably try and stay above 50% though.

There's also the time honoured group strategy of a healer hiding behind you so you can fully focus on carnage while they keep you alive.

Ok so who was bodyguarding him?

Edit - ok if you're the healer, don't let your health drop below 80% and preferably keep it at 100%. This changes near the end of the fight when it's more useful to keep the fighters going, but up till that point you need to be "off-limits" (unless you're going the healing/tank route) as they are probably going to be in so much trouble without you.

Tessalicious
2nd-May-2007, 02:37 PM
Ok, I can't resist any longer. Work is overrated.

DS, try pressing 'V' which causes health bars to appear over all enemies - I find this really helps me to know which mob would be most useful for me to hit, and gives me something to click on for the attack that I know isn't a player (players show in blue, mobs in red or yellow).

Beo, stop yourself from pressing '1' for attack by pressing a different button for an ability (spell, special attack, whatever). Alternatively, try keeping on hand on the mouse and the other hand just for moving yourself around (preferably on the arrow keys, they're further away from the '1' key than WAS&D).

General advice - you may have worked this out anyway, but I might as well mention it - always work out which are your best attacks for different kinds of mobs. For example, on my rogue I can obliterate a spellcaster without taking a single point of damage because they spend every second of the fight stunned or silenced (so they can't cast any nasty mean spells at me). Beasts and people get bleed and movement slowing attacks, while elementals and giants get armor reducing attacks and the odd stun too. Keep an eye out for when a mob resists spells of a certain type, and try to use something different (elementals and casters often have high specific magic resistance, so use a different spell tree).

I loe the offensive disenchant idea, but only if it's temporary (only lasts until you die, or at most until the bg is over). Otherwise stuff would be a waste of money, and us crafters would go out of business very quickly.
Ok so who was bodyguarding him?Uh, that would have been me, if he'd bloody stayed still!

Alternatively, try keeping on hand on the mouse and the other hand just for moving yourself around (preferably on the arrow keys, they're further away from the '1' key than WAS&D).

Stop yourself from pressing 1 or whatever other icon you've got, by removing it from your bar. I don't have a basic attack on there at all anymore. If I want to do that, then right mouse button works fine. But mostly, I want to start off attacks with a special of some sort. So, it's just wasting a good icon space.

Of course, then you have to stop yourself right-clicking. Maybe chop off your middle finger?

Nash's technique is to charge (Stuns them for a second) and immediately hit REND (they bleed for X damage over Y seconds) Depending on the creature I'll throw in a number of Cleave armours (I can stack up to 5 of those)

if I get swamped I stomp (whatever the orc equivalent of stomp is) and if I tab through them all rending each of them at least once (not a great idea perhaps but I like to know they're all taking damage over time) If I'm getting overwhelmed I use my intimidating shout, which stuns my main target and scares the others away. get them down to 1/5th health then I execute (unless my weapon damage can take them down in one more hit.. which it usually can)

A quick glug of health potion and i'm ready for the rest.

Usually works for me. Nash is getting to the stage now where he rarely dies. Unless he's being stupid.. and lets face it.. he's an orc warrior.

"No don't charge into that group of 8 mobs... oh too late!"

Just out of curiousity how close is the group to the "model" 50% warriors, 33% healers, 17% other specialists?

Tessalicious
2nd-May-2007, 03:01 PM
Generally I don't hear it divided like that. There are up to 5 members, so 17% of anything would be tricky. Usually you need 1 tank (taking damage), 1 healer, 1 dps (mage, rogue) minimum, plus 1 multiclass (shaman, warlock, hunter, druid), plus 1 any of the above makes a great party.

Yeah it's more the way I remember it  (Half, third, remainder - still tricky with 5 though multiclasses let you do fractions eg 2 tanks, a healer, a multiclass healer/tank, mage, rogue - but it's not meant to be taken that seriously)

I have a couple of "get me out of this mess" spells

One is a fabulous scream -which makes mobs run away (great if you've got too many to handle).
Another is silencing which protects from spell casters - but has the disadvantage that once I've cast it it takes A-G-E-S to re-set.

Thing is, I'm not experienced enough yet to always know when's a good time to use these (and other, specialised) spells. So I'm afraid people will have to put up with me blundering around till I figure it out properly :flower:

Mage or Rogue dps? Try hunter!

Was teamed with 2 warriors yesteday. They were level 53 and 56, I'm level 54. In about an hours worth of killing, my hunter did 56% of the damage that the group did - more than them put together. And it was usually my pet that did the tanking as well!! :na:

Not that I think that hunters are over-powerful or anything! :flower:

Tessalicious
2nd-May-2007, 05:53 PM
I agree that hunters do a lot of damage, but I would hold with my assertion that they are multiclass characters. The pet acts as tank/damage, the hunter as range damage as well as healer (only of pet of course).

Anyone, everyone knows that hunters are due a serious nerf sometime soon - then we'll see who's :na:...

TheTramp

They are multiclass characters. But, if you wanted a dps, then right now, you'd want a hunter. I'll group with anybody of a similar level, and see if they can do more dps.

And yeah. Nerf soon. Hopefully after I get to level 70!

Of course, If I have the mats already then it's free to Guild members. If I need to buy something then either you buy it / farm it / make it and mail it to me or I buy it and make it.

I wouldn't dream of charging Guild mates.. well not TOO much at least

actually Nash is pretty solvent these days.. he farms Wool off humanoids. It's ridiculous but Wool is really expensive just now. Anyway now that Tassi doesn't need wool he just sells it (or does the donation of wool quests for reputation)

When Tassi gets to 20 she's going to go back to Undercity to lvl up her enchanting.

Can you have more than one enchant one a piece of armour?

Beowulf

Can you have more than one enchant one a piece of armour?

Alas no.. one overwrites the other.

However if I had a piece of armour that gave me say

+10 Strength
+5 Agility
+1 Spirit

and I applied +1 agility to that you would have

+10 Strength
+6 Agility
+1 Spirit

However, if you then added an armour patch for +24 armour it would cancel out the +1 Agility. I guess it's to stop people making Twink items by layering on hundreds of enchants :)

Take a look at Nash and Tassi on the armoury and you'll see the way they are equipped :)

I have to go think about something (or someone :awe:) else now.. lest I get into trouble for thinking about WoW too much

OK, so I spent most of my evening yesterday running around trying to empty my quest log, only to find that I had no idea where I was going (even though I had a book to help me) and that every time I finished a quest they gave me another one - then I levelled up and got even more quests to do. I think I finished with more quests than I started with! Ugh.

Oh, and for anyone wondering about the faire, Beo and I decided it was a waste of time, so don't bother.

Oh, and for anyone wondering about the faire, Beo and I decided it was a waste of time, so don't bother.

I'm sure if you spend the time collecting all the myriad items they ask you for so you can get 50 tickets then you might get something of worth.. As it happens I got an uncommon Green Chest plate that was poorer than the one I already had and sent it to Tassi for Disenchanting. had to make several batches of armour to allow Sparkles to get a few tokens. If you have the stuff already then I guess it's fine, but I couldn't be bothered finding the mats or hunting for the collectables.

Oh .. and DON'T activate the Tonks. I don't know how they work.. but they'll freeze your character to the spot for about 5 mins.

On the subject of Disenchanting / enchanting this weeks "D'OH!" award does to Tassi !! it was going to go to Nash but Tassi pipped him to the dubious Honor.

Nash wanted his new axe enchanted.. but he equipped it first by accident rendering it soulbound and there for unable to be posted to Tassi for enchanting. hehe.

Just as well mind you as Tassi was disenchanting some goodies, then went to enchant her lovely boots.. erm.. (embarrassed cough) It didn't exactly go as planned. Rather than ENCHANTING my nice boots (reward from a quest).. .. .. I DISENCHANTED them  .. so now I'm running around in my bare feet ,sorry I mean , hooves

Get the two characters together in the game and do a "Trade". Then place the Soulbound item to be Enchanted in the "Trade slot at the bottom" which is used for Enchanting and so forth items from another player.

This'll allow the enchanting to occur. Bit of a pain I know as it means both characters must be next to each other. Still better than no enchant. :nice:

Also, when you get those honour medals a) where do you cash them in and b) roughly how many do you need before you start getting "uber-stuff"?

I've played Warsong Gulch with Nash.. is great fun, but expect a life expectancy measured in seconds.

I've also played in AB .. it's a "king of the hill" game.. you have to control 5 resource spots .. again.. life expectancy is measured in seconds

oooh.. off the top of my head.. I dunno, not many. about 20-25 Warsong gulch and about 8 or so AB ones.

To trade them in you need to go to Oggrimmar (at least that's one place I know) and its in the Horde embassy (I think) it's got a swirly portal in the front door .. presumably to stop Alliance getting in there I guess :) .. it's up top, head to the sky tower and along the rope bridge. Then (if memory serves me well) to the left somewhere.

but apparently there are specialist vendors "out there" in the entrance to various Battlefields for example.

Apparently there are links out there for translations but "cross alliance communication is against blizzards T.O.C."

basically what you see when an alliance speaks to you is gobbledygook and vice versa. but there is a rudimentary way of getting something back.

personally I just use emotes.. /fart being my fave one when alliance are concerned ;)

on other subjects.. this is my new axe (I know DS was so impressed with my last one)

Bloodspiller
Binds when equipped
Two-Hand Axe
57 - 87 Damage Speed 2.70
(26.7 damage per second)
Durability 100 / 100
Requires Level 27
Chance on hit: Wounds the target causing them to bleed for 130 damage over 30 sec.
Item Level 32

Thanks to a random enchanter it also has a permanent +5 weapon damage

I also have a sharpening stone which adds Sharpened (+6 Damage) to it for 30 mins at a time.

I am looking for some advice on talents though.. at the moment I'm fairly balanced, but am thinking that a change to mostly Arms and some fury with only a little (if any) protection talents would be best? Since I seem to be specialising in two handed (slow but massive dmg) weapons and am forgoing the fast 2 handed weapon path (and the oh so cool Flurry talent) would this be a wise choice? if I change now it'll cost me a few G but if I wait until I'm lvl 60 say it'll cost me a bomb !!

discuss?

Most people choose to specialise in one tree. Less overall balanced, but you get those better high-end talents, which are worth it in most cases.

My warrior is totally specced in arms and uses a 2 handed sword, but when he gets up 1 more level and has the top talent available, I'm going to pay to change him to totally be specced in fury, get him a couple of decent one handed weapons, and see how that goes.

Incidentally, re-speccing isn't cost dependent on your level, just on the number of times you do it. If you don't ever re-spec until level 70, that first time will still only cost you 1g.

discuss?Firstly, cost of respeccing doesn't change with level, it changes exponentially with the number of times you've done it.

I'd generally advise you not to change for the sake of it, but to change when you get to a stage where there's a talent point you want but can't have because it's too high up a tree, but you could reach it if you took out all the talents from the other trees.

Having said that, I did that recently (in order to get the top level talent in the Assassination tree) and regretted it because I had other more powerful attacks and didn't really need it, but had lost improved stealth and other things as a result. So I went from 90% Assassination to 100% Assassination down to 80% Assassination (getting rid of the points that I'd only spent to have enough points in that tree) in the space of two days.

I guess the lesson I learnt from that was, if what you have seems to be serving you well, and you know how to use it, stick with it.

First off Just want to say Hi and introduce myself to the Forum. After an Awesome Weekender in Ayr thought it best to register and get involved. Everyone was so friendly and the quality of dancing really was fantastic. So thank you all involved.

Ok back to WoW!!

I have been playing the game on and off since it was released and love it, yes at times it can be overly addictive but if you are aware of that then you can get stuck into other addictive hobbies like dancing!! The view I use is that it is no more of a waste of time than sat around watching TV and films for hours on end... and it's more sociable.

I currently have a Lvl 51 Shaman on Lightbringer. Called "Committed" feel free to whisper me in game if any of you use that server. (Alliance Side)

Just want to shed my pennies worth on a couple of things. The cost for retraining maxes out at a certain level and does not keep increasing so at higher levels it gives you and ability to play with different specs.

For a rogue Tessalicious I have found that for PVE stuff a combat rogue with Swords and poison works best  whereas if you intend to do a lot of PVP then daggers and stealth work best.

Well short on time and high on knowledge so will stop myself now before I get too excited and spout too much about various build advice etc. Look forward to seeing you around.

Just browsing back on the thread and see you are all Horde... Guess I will track you down!! I may even create a Horde Alt for the crack!

Next time you're online, I'm sure Trampy would want you to add him to your friends in the Alliance side, as well as my Alliance character - both with our forum names! And if you want to come over to the dark side, you'd be more than welcome to join the guild if you just send a message to me (Toireasa) in game.

Thanks for the rogue advice btw - I really enjoy the assassination side, since my alliance toon was a paladin and I'm bored of just attacking straight and hitting things, but I have quite a few points in subtlety too. It's stronger in pvp than pve definitely, but I'm stronger in PvE than I was and I enjoy the rogue-style play so I think I'll stick with it for now. I might try out combat when I'm in outlands just to see how it compares.

Firstly, cost of respeccing doesn't change with level, it changes exponentially with the number of times you've done it.

IIRC, this has been altered slightly with a recent patch or BC. If you wait long enough without respeccing the cost lowers again. So for example if it cost me 5g to respec, and then did it again 3 months later it might only cost 5g again. If I waited a a year it'd be back to 1g.

Those figures are a total guess by the way - I don't know what the time frames involved actually are, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works now.

But goodness knows what i'll find when I get back online.. probably everything in my and Tassi's bags sold off for some gold farming company.. worst case scenario is that they also unlearn my skills (oh please no!!!!!!) out of spite..

Worst case is I speak to a GM and they SHOULD be able to remedy any illegal changes to my character. (in an ideal world at least!) theoretically if my char has been deleted etc they should be able to roll back the database.. of course, I have no idea if they would do such a thing or not.

They can, and do, apparently (http://kotaku.com/gaming/wow/wow-+-alls-well-that-ends-well-248352.php). There was also a story about using the cursor hack to steal WOW accounts (http://kotaku.com/gaming/security/cursor-hackers-hit-wow-249911.php) but apparently some of the third party customizations are also flawed.

Steal WOW accounts is big business apparently. I'm sorry to hear about your account loss; nothing like something like that to ruin your game.

My Password wasn't easy. 12 characters Mixed upper lower case and numerics. it COULD have been stronger but then passwords can ALWAYS be stronger. but I've noticed with WoW that there seems to be no "maximum attempts at log in" you try and try and try and try and.. .. I know this as I was trying to log on.

I thought I was going MAD !! (is it uppercase? have I got caps lock on? are my keys sticking? have I had a stroke? hehe)

in the end it's JUST A GAME. they can't get my bank details from logging in online and my online banking has a multitude of questions.

A year or so ago my ebay account got hacked too. Ebay refunded all my charges etc but apparently I was selling 50 Radley and Louis Vuitton handbags for £30 each!! .. again I had a fairly secure password. Ebay support told me that the far eats have gangs of criminals stealing computers and using them to brute force attack passwords on any site where they can make money.

I guess the pseudo-economy of WoW is just another target.

I have some add-ons yes, but I didn't install any weird ones. I also looked at the add-on developer guide /API to see that there wasn't any way for an addon to pilfer info.

The logon screen is blocked to the addon API (in fact addons only start up ONCE you've logged in) the WoW Client watches running programs to stop bots and exploits. I had considered that.

I mean, I've got a daily updated AV / Firewall package. I check for spyware if not daily certainly at least once a week. I have Windows set to auto update all security patches and my router is also enabled as a physical firewall.

Well from what i've read there is no way for an addon (written in LUA code) to access the account login data. The only way would be for some "installer" to install an executable keylogger.

Why can't Blizzard restore your gold ? Its simply a case of seeing who the gold was sent to when you had no control of your account, removing it, and giving it back to you! I would say its VERY worth it to get the GMs involved or someone is profiting from the theft!

I can give you some gold of course, but i only have about 14 at the mo. I could send you mats for a while if you like.

I raised a GM ticket last night but got an email saying that they needed to talk to me in person. I Can't play this weekend as my Parents are up to Aberdeen to visit but Sunday night, Monday night I'll re-raise a ticket to speak to a GM and I should be able to get all my G back..

"How much did I lose? Oh about 50.. <thinks>.. cough thousand! ahem.. yeah about 50,000 gold!"
"but sire our records clearly show you only had 50 G?"
"OMG you've been hacked too???"

well it's worth a try ;)

I was puzzling over this from Beowulf's posts. If there's a money trail isn't it fairly easy to crack down on people doing this sort of thing, including legal measures? Or is it just that storing the data for everything every character does is too much and so not done?

I spoke to the GM's and they say ,sadly, that I cannot get my gold back. There are so many ways to pass gold around .. send it by mail, trades, buying up cheap objects placed on the auction house for SILLY prices etc they also use alts, disposable accounts, pass money to many different people some of which aren't even aware it was stolen. It's nigh on impossible for them to track where the money went.

It's not so bad. I still have my chars. Even though I found out how "fun" it is getting around when you've only got a handful of coppers.

Even more fun was when i was playing my much ignored Ally char. He's only lvl 6 so didn't have much money in the first place. but I trained him in Skinning and mining. Only to realise I didn't have enough copper to buy either a skinning knife nor a pickaxe !! haha.

So I went out killing mobs, got killed, my weapons and armour got damaged.. and the money I had got from killing them had to be used to repair my armour ! Aaaaarrgh !!

I wish I remember how I did this the first time round !! hehe

Thats just an excuse, its not your problem how the thief distributes the money. Why mention some people "aren't even aware it's stolen" - so you feel pity for them? it's against the rules, and people buying gold in the real world should have ALL their gold removed if discovered.

It's nigh on impossible for them to track where the money went.

Nonsense. The money is coming from your characters and you can say when. They should not need any more information. There is no grey area here at all. Blizzard aren't doing themselves any favours by allowing this sort of hacking to continue and allowing people to profit from it.

I was quite pleased :)

Very good.. I did a few rounds as well. I still get killed a lot but I managed to capture the flag a few times (which was nice)

I developed an "interesting" technique. But one I can't repeat due to it being WAY too expensive.

leg it normally towards the ally base, when you're half way up the ramp to their flag room, quaff an invisibility potion. Players expect night elves and rogues to sneak around in the gloom.. not battle axe wielding Orc warriors!! , Charge at person nearest the flag, hamstring and rend, this gets me enough rage to do intimidating shout, Which stuns target and fears 5 others. Grab flag, then leg it again.. if they get close (which when you have they flag they all do) quaff a swiftness potion.

The only problem with this is the cool down between potions, but I usually fight toe to toe for a few mins taking a few of them out.

I've also been playing my Ally char recently again (am so NOT looking forward to getting Násh and Tassi up to lvl 35 :( ) so I'm playing my very noob Dwarf Hunter (8) char as at least he levels up relatively quickly :)

Thanks to two ally chars.. one nice lvl 70 guy gave me a +4 enchanted green axe and some assorted armour (all because I admired his most cool bow!) and some other ally .. goes by the name of Trampee. Now I wonder who that could have been

Will post Tassi some stuff to get her back on the road again - and maybe she might be able to put an armour enchant on my new cloak when we're on together again?

It's bad about your gold, and I agree Blizzard need to find a better way of tracking these things, but I have faith in the fact that people are generally very nice and will help you out to get you back on the path again :flower:

I'll gladly encloak any chants.. erm.. enchant any clocks .. <thumps head off desk> enchant any cloaks etc you need.

As I was saying to Trampy and Tessa in game, Tassi actually has 86 g worth of mats sitting in the bank. I counted them all up using Auctioneer :)

She's actually got more G (albeit tied up) than Nash does at the moment. But MANY thanks to Tessa who helped them both out. And Trampy who assisted my Ally Dwarf Hunter.

Hope my stolen gold only buys the gold buyers nothing but bad luck !!

I laughed the last day when I typed in /silly to get the joke voice emote.

Tassi said "You know in my native tongue my name means dances with tassels"

hehe, purely coincidental that my name is Tassi I suppose.

My first (alt) character I rolled was going to be called Cassandra.. but it was taken so she got called Cassi (and she was night elf) , She got deleted as I was bored with her so I then rolled a Tauren version of her. Changed the C to a T (for Tauren I guess)

Nash (or more correctly Náshnarak) was named from some online orc name generation program !! in hindsight the á was a mistake !

And Beo .. Don't know why I called him Beo (because Beowulf was taken probably ;) )

Yes, and not DEVIANT fish .. I made the mistake of asking general in Oggrimmar about DEVIANT scale armour. Got quite a lot of funny responses !!

it's Lightbringer as well.. well at least for Trampee. I'm in a guild.. but don't ask me to tell you what it's called. Some one invited me to their guild as soon as I went to the other city at the end of the tram. It's quite a big guild, about 56 members but I don't know how many of those are alts/active etc.

It's a quest chain that you get exclusively for warriors when you hit level 30. My level 50 warrior is still using the sword equivalent that I got for completing the quest (whirlwind sword).

It was great at level 35 or so. Now I need to upgrade though...
